It has happened so you never know. I'm still new to all this I'm only running an old S3+. Where are you renting from if you don't mind me asking?

same here, 2Xs3+ independently and 6sticks+4,5U3 in a group.

When I see the hashing power of those having found a block I wonder if I should just put my miners in a normal pool and rent hash with the BTC ;p

What I did... I've earned 3.6 BTC on kano.is in a few weeks, as the pool has been doing great. I used 3 BTC to rent and try my luck with -ck's solo pool.

Edit: though from now on, I'll probably try and hop in the group runs, so as to not risk all my earnings.

I rent from nicehash.com. They seem to have the best prices, sometimes it gets high, but still generally better than others unless you rent from EU.  I run x4 Avalon 6's on kano.is though and am pretty new myself.

I tried it out for the heck of it with a little I had mined awhile back I got 2 hours worth of run time and this was the result...{"hashrate1m": "125T", "hashrate5m": "124.6T", "hashrate1hr": "108.2T", "hashrate1d": "8.25T", "hashrate7d": "1.23T", "lastupdate": 1454185099, "shares": 173938452, "bestshare": 772000072.57305372, "bestever": 772000072,

It's not worth running running for only 2 hrs and at ~100th in my opinion. I ran mine for a 24hr period almost at 800th. Reason for this is bc of the way nicehash.com works. It send miners to the pointer address. So instead of having only a few machines I have a few hundred machines working on the same block which = more lotto tickets in a sense. next time if your going to invest 0.* whatever BTC do it with a group to increase your odds. If you read on the forums, the EU ran 500th-1ph of power for a 24hr period, 5 or 6 of their runs were unsuccessful. 2 of their runs were highly successful. You lose less but have better odds. I was just stupid lucky to hit a block, my gamble paid off but I also put in 3 BTC.

Your last sentence is correct.  It was a lucky gamble.  800TH/s expects to take about 7.5 days to find a block at current difficulty.  Congrats on the hit, though!

Grin thanks, that being said though i was ~1/3 the pools power so combing pool hash power plus the time since the last block solved by the pool, the odds were a little more to my favor. but still lucky as hell..

No, sorry that's wrong. The total pool's hashrate and the duration since the last block have precisely zero effect on your chance of finding a block. Only your hashrate matters. I will keep saying this over and over. If you have a "system" in your head for how to gamble based on current pool hashrate, time since last block, predicting when and where the next block will be etc., that's your business, but please don't try to tell people that it's fact or scientific.

I was just checking it out and 15 bucks was enough to spare just to see how it goes. I would have put in more if I could have afforded it, but until I find employment again I'm kinda at a stand still lol. I gotta be smart on my spending right now. Wink

My apologies everyone. -ck knows better, and I am still new to it all. I'm not here trying to convince anyone of anything, I guess it was just my thought process and nothing more. So sorry again, this probably isn't the right place to discuss this anyway, it should be for -ck solo pool.

If you want to find out why this is a common problem, i suggest you research the following terms:

  • Gambler's fallacy
  • Stochastic process
  • Poisson distribution (this is the probabilistic distribution that describes the time you will probably take to hit a block)

Where can i find a group i can mine with?
I'll shamelessly plug myself:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1345538.0

But there are others,

A German group that has hit 4 blocks:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1318387.0

And smaller ones that are trying to get up and running.

I must warn you though, invest at your own risk. Because this is pretty much gambling, but gambling on if you will mine a block or not.
