...
I've read through this thread several times now...and I really want to join Kano. Unfortunately, I need to pay bills regularly  Sad

I do have some ideas for the pool's growth though:

1. Focus on the smaller guys! (specifically S9 owners)
Not sure what you mean by 'focus'?
Quote
2. Explain PPLNS payout & Ramps using 1x S9's hashrate as an example - show graphs/time needed etc.
Well there are quite a few explanations, including on the web site.
But the 5Nd is also shown on the graph and the time needed depends on the pool hash rate, which is also stated on the web site, but changes regularly since it depends on the pool hash rate
Quote
3. Maybe half the ramp to 2.5Nd? Waiting +-3months for full payout is brutal)
Changing the 5Nd will affect the long term miners and allow people to take advantage of that change ...
Quote
4. Cancel the large miner's BTC reward (not really working + the big fish seem to leave after getting the reward anyway)
Well, no they don't leave 'after getting the reward'
The majority has gone to large miners who 'did' spend a lot of time on the pool.
Quote
5. Use the saved coins to payout all dust bunnies asap & in future (see point 1)
Still working on it ...
Quote
6. Use the saved coins to also hire a website designer (Kano.is seriously needs some love)
This wont happen, since it involves doing useless things to the web site and, basically, is a security risk.
I guess you just need to actually mine on the pool, look at the pages available and ask questions about them.
The data available here is actually more detailed and more accurate than I think any other pool.
Quote
7. Lower fees to 0.5% (can be raised again when the pool is larger & regularly finding blocks)...people obviously aren't willing to jump ship for 1.1% saving vs Slush

Kind regards,
Cjs
Well I don't really want to run the pool at a loss ...
You see, one thing you probably don't realise, is that we are the best connected pool of ALL pools.
I've got nodes all over the planet, connected to every Fibre relay and even in China to ensure our blocks get out to the other pools, and to also ensure that when the Fibre relay isn't working (which happens on occasion) we still get our blocks out as fast as possible.
But I have already stated clearly to many that if we do get over 400PH for 5Nd (i.e. for the reward) then I'll drop it to 0.6%

5. Use the saved coins to payout all dust bunnies asap & in future (see point 1)
Still working on it ...

No offense Kano, but you have been saying that ever since I’ve joined the pool, which was probably more than 2 years ago.  Will you really make it happen?

... as I said, still working on it.

Though in that time many other things have been coded/changed and interrupted the accounting system.
It has not been top priority of course - it only makes top priority when there are no other more important things needing to be done.

Though it has nothing to do with S9 miners, since e.g. at the moment less than 350GHs gets a payout every block
- so the "see point 1" wasn't relevant.
The coins for the dust are just sitting there awaiting ...

Hello, i just wanted to share some information with you guys.
i've been reading this site for well over a month.  Also I've been trying to find out on Internet searches how much money can i make out of mining bitcoin as an individual.
I've found absolutely nothing.  I'm a database programmer by trade in the UK and crazy about stats!  So, i decided to go out and buy an Antminer and find out for myself.

I got one brand new Antminer V9 including BitMain power supply off ebay for 130 pounds. $158.

Out of the box and up and running and connected to Kano Pool in less than 5 minutes including making a cup of Tea.  Dead easy.

I've had it running for 10 days.

It's very noisy.  Noise monitor said 83 decibels at 3 foot away.  75 decibels at 10 foot away.   That's ear protection stuff if being by it for long times.

I got it plugged into a power monitor and it's pulling 1100 Watts.

In the UK, my energy provider charges 16 pence a kilowatt ($0.2).  1100 x 24 Hours = 26.4KW.  That's £4.22p a day.  ($5.15).

So we just mined first block by schmokeandapancake.

I've just gone to my rewards page and after 10 days i've earned 0.00015919BTC.

Bitcoin today has just passed £10,000 a coin.  So i've just earned £1.59p ($1.94).  For £42.20p of electricity ($51.48).  OUCH!!!

Basically, in the UK, you need to get a Wind Turbine installed in your back garden.  I don't think Solar panels will cut it with our poor weather.

I just though somebody might be interested in this sort of info.

Thanks
Andy.

There's a catch to that though - it's the N in PPLNS.

What it means is that each share you submit will be rewarded for N difficulty of shares submitted to the pool.

As it explains on the Help->Payouts page, the N here is 5Nd, so your shares will continue to be rewarded for 5Nd after you submit them.

The relevant part from Help->Payouts
Quote
The 5Nd means it takes that long to reward your shares.
The ramp isn't missing rewards, it's delaying them to reduce variance.
Each share is rewarded in all the blocks found in the 5Nd after the share.
That's simply how it reduces variance. Each share's reward is averaged out over the 5Nd after it.

So e.g. if you stop mining today, you'll keep getting (diminishing) rewards for the next 5Nd

Well, first your not ramped up so your not getting your full reward yet.  Your ramp up, full reward and ramp down will equal full reward for the whole time you mine.

Also if your mainly interested in the stats part, we need more stat's focused folks since Organofcorti disappeared, and since your electricity is outrageously high cost, maybe you should look at a lower end miner to collect your stat's with.

The Terminus R606 would fit that bill beautifully.  1Ths for around 100 Watts and quite compared to anything else.  Check out this link.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5131245.msg50578412#msg50578412

For the S9 you have, maybe you can find an economical hosting for it somewhere.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
A: Top-posting.
Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet and in e-mail?

Yeah.

I've also got a GekkoScience NewPac USB miner.  It says on the net that you can push it up to 135GH/s but i don't want to harm it so I pushed the frequency up to 425 and it's mining a 100GH/s.  I put a cpu cooling fan in front of it and it's nice and cool and mining faultless.

It's pulling 5V 2Watts but after a couple of days the power pack falied so i bought a 4 amp rack PSU and it's now perfect.

You're right about the power.
This little thing is only pulling 10 Watts. That's working out at 3.9 pence a day ($3.04).  Painless !!!
So i'm leaving this one running on an old very battered laptop using ubuntu and cgminer and see what figures i get from it.

I'm only doing it out of interest.  All good stuff.  I'll have a look at the one you've just mentioned as well
:-)

Yes thanks.
Just had a look at the GekkoScience R606 Pod Miner  Terminus R606 on Amazon.  There aren't many around but it looks interesting. 300 ish dollars.  About 270 quid.
I might go for one next month if i can locate one.
I'll see how far i want to go.
I'm not going to shut the little Gekko down either.  I love the thing.
:-)

I can tell you  that with the upcoming ½ ing it pays to be fully ramped on a 5n payout pool.
If ramp up time scares you  migrate some in

Aug
Sept
Oct
Nov
Dec
Jan  So that you are fully ramped up by Jan 31 to Feb 28

anyone fully ramped up in this pool by March 1st will have an advantage for  the May ½ ing
Alas, this isn't correct.

The halving means each pool will be rewarding half what they did before the halving.
There's no sudden gain on your old shares, they're remaining value is suddenly half what it was before.
So the longer back N is, the more you actually lose.
I mentioned this before, just before the last halving.

Going from the current block, 588888, the next halving will be at block 630000, 41112 blocks from now.

Assuming 10mins per block, that's 285 days from now ... so 138 days into next year = around 17 May
Of course diff will probably rise, so we can go with maybe 5% less days (each diff change)? = 14 days earlier or around 3 May
10% each diff change would be 19-Apr

So with VERY high certainly between 19-Apr and 17-May if diff rises any amount between now and then.
My guess would be after 3-May

I think what he was getting at was that the guy could leave all miners on PPS to ensure he's bringing in enough revenue to pay the bills and slowly bring over a percentage of his miners each month that way he is still pulling in PPS while the first set is ramping up - by the time he adds the third set, the first set should be fully ramped up - by the final set the first two sets should be ramped up fully - of course, if ramping stays the same - it does tend to fluctuate based on pool hash rate.

...

But it does not change the fact  that  a 5n pool like kanos is very advantageous  to be fully ramped up a month or two before the ½ ing

I am try to convince my partners to migrate here from viabtc  in order to be prepped for the ½ ing
Based on what?

The pool tx fees will effectively be double % of what they were, the day before the halving - so you gain from that change only.
But it's also only a % double, not a BTC value double, whereas of course the base reward halves.

However, any shares you have that are still unpaid, lose half their unpaid value on the day of the halving, so the longer time the N in PPLNS, around 3 May, the more you lose.

I'd expect most PPS/FPPS pools will increase their % also the same day.

The BTC advantage of mining here vs any PPS/FPPS pool is the lower fee - which has nothing to do with halving.

The other advantages are for this pool only:
1) Best support
2) Best Bitcoin network connected pool on the planet
3) Most accurate pool data
4) Most detailed pool data statistical analysis and the best miner data statistical analysis of any pool for issues

And of course vs any of the smaller pools:
1) Full 24/7/365.25 pool management that doesn't exist in any of them

There are a ton of ways to make this quieter - and there's no issues with modifying the fans unlike the S9. The V9 (perhaps it is a re-badged s7?) is very happy using quiet 120mm fans and will usually plug right in without issue. If there are issues, the V9 is also usually tuneable to adjust power usage. There are many sources online for more details on this and -once I get around to- I'll show how I use to set mine up on a different thread. At least for the noise you do have some options out there.

What does the "workers": mean? I noticed it before its value is 1, but now I checked that value is "workers": 0 even though the "shares" is going up each window refresh.

If you mean the address.php page, it's the number of workers you have connected - not sure why you see a 0 though.
PM me your details or tell me in Discord and I'll check what you mean.

Edit: OK found your details.
Found the problem.
Hacked in a fix.
Should be ok now.
