I hope that BCX does nothing because the first thing you will do after the attack is to report to the FBI the situation because remember that the coin on its wallett are money so it's a robbery
You mean, something like this: Dear FBI:
We are a community who is developing Monero, a cryptocoin that will (a) make it impossible for someone to steal someone else's money, and (b) make it impossible for you or anyone else to identify the source or destination af any payment, even if it is not connected to criminal or terrorist activity.
The coin is not yet fully developed and tested, but some of us are already using it as currency and investment, even though it is not registered or regulated in any way by the US government.
Recently, an anonymous user known by the aliases "BitcoinExpress" or "BCX" claimed to have found a flaw in our design. Someone, who could be him or not, perhaps exploiting that flaw or not, apparently caused somehow some of the coins to be moved from some addresses that we claim to be ours to some addresses that we cannot identify. He or them also exposed the identities of some monero users.
We ask you to track down the person(s) responsible and prosecute him or them fro theft and other applicable cybercrimes. We count on your help to ensure that we can continue the development and use of Monero without fear that he or them may find another flaw in the future.
That was a good one!! Did Moneroman write this un-ironically?

I think it is impressive how monero is holding up.
I know some people wish no one would believe BCX, but people in crypto get easily spooked
So overall, if it doesn't go down too much more, I think as a whole the community did as good as you could ask
BCX HAS killed numerous coins, and AM saying it is real is a rather scary thing, but most are holding so far, congrats
"I think it is impressive how monero is holding up." Its holding up because some of the whales have been pouring btc into it to prop the price up. Last night one of those whales more or less confirmed that nearly half the 'buy support' was just him and under typical XMR markets he controls 1/3 of the buys and sells on the Polo market. XMR hit a 1000 btc volume the other day and overall price barely moved with all that dumping. Shows they have a lot of faith in it but they have to. Pre-BCX, these whales have had hundreds upon hundreds of BTC invested in XMR so they cannot afford to let it go. It will be interesting to see how many more weaker hands get shaken out as we get closer to the potential attack. Will the price move much more than it is? I do not think they'll let it go too far unless BCX is successful.

I should have added also (c) allow the hiding of revenue from the IRS, (c) provide an unlicensed service for money transmittal across state boundaries, (d) allow the unreported transmittal of arbitrary amounts of money across national borders, (e) provide banking services unencumbered by KYC/AML procedures, ...
You really expect the FBI to help and protect the development of Monero?

Can you elaborate a bit more?
Sure, I could elaborate a lot more, but am not inclined to do so here and now for reasons that should be obvious. I can only speak for myself, but with what I have seen so far, I am very pleased with what BCX's game may ultimately produce, win or lose. Personally, I see the threat as a serious one, and treat it like an unexpected red-team exercise. Been there done that, from both sides of the keyboard. All new coins with this modern design are vulnerable in the early days in this same way. The game has encouraged me to look deeper at some old ideas and to learn things some things that I didn't know previously. And so I've given what I learned to the XMR devs because I am grateful to the work they have done so far in this effort. I am hopeful that they will have the opportunity to make use if it in the time they have, but I know they are very busy. What I won't do is publish anything more broadly. At least not until this game has fully concluded. The devs however may do what they please. I'm old and slow and my coding skilz are as well. I was kicked upstairs into design and management years ago but I was not content to remain completely idle during this game. If these devs are able to do something amazing, they should get all the credit along with all the rest that are helping them (more folks than you might think). Other than this little contribution I don't have a lot to give, I'm just here along with the rest of you in the peanut gallery with a couple months salary at stake, but from where I stand, my little bit of XMR looks to be in very good hands.

Thanks for elaborating and I am understanding your view. I am very satisfied how the devteam and others who are working on monero handled this situation. BCX's game also gave insight in the capabilities (which I personally have no doubts about, but maybe interesting to observe for newcomers and investers which are thinking about investing in monero) and how they are handling such situations. In addition, the code have been reviewed a bit more thoroughly after his statement, which also strengthens this coin. Quoting this for info: MEW - Monero Economy Workgroup communication
This has been a busy day. The taskforce of crypto_zoidberg, AnonyMint, jl777 and some Monero developers and MEW members has diligently worked on the code and is implementing fixes to possible exploits that might give the attacker the upper hand. The code is evaluated so that we can say with certainty that no coinkiller exploit can be used against us, and this makes me thankful for the original coders of CryptoNote. It is too often forgotten that without this unique technology there would be no Monero that has taken the torch, determined to carry it beyond the current limits of cryptoworld.
Although I cannot personally evaluate all the work that has been done, I would like to thank everybody who have been working on the issue. There are many unique contributions that together make sure that we are able to withstand the attack. I feel that the situation is similar to the attack that we had to thwart only two weeks ago, as we now again stand united.
The MEW will be officially inaugurated tomorrow with 18 members. We will open the membership as soon as possible for everyone who is interested in contributing to Monero's success. The minimum membership fee will be set to 10 XMR to ensure that everybody has an opportunity to join. Our organization is minimal because the activities will be carried out by members themselves, in groups of their choosing. David Latapie serves as Members Executive, I have been selected to be the Operational Executive, and NewLiberty will be our Judge. For practical matters, you will have to contact David, and he will tell when we are ready to take new members.
The attack has served in tightening our ranks and we are now in front of several fundamental decisions. These will be discussed and voted upon by the community in MEW. In a way I even feel grateful that this opportunity to make things straight has fallen upon us. We now have more confidence on the code, and on the developers. The community is unified and I have been inundated with PM's offering help and support. From the quantity of troll posts one would believe that there is some general animosity towards Monero, but the PM's alone speak volumes about the support.
In the end, a coin's value is upheld by people who trust it and decide to own it. The people who do not trust it and do now own it, also do not have a say concerning the value. Monero will be developed for its users, not for the ones who do not use it. I believe the strengthening of the code and the community is very positive for Monero's future.

The exploit makes the anonymity redundant. Yet it suddenly can kill the coin, by forking I assume. Apparently with 20% hashrate too.
Somehow I have a feeling they are just trying a plain old 51% attack, with a good amount of DDoS involved.

This is my assumption. BCX has only a few tricks up his sleeve when to comes to things of this nature. Either outcome will be beneficial to XMR.

The biggest issue with this whole thing is I want to warm up my wallet and sell the 100 coins I mined fucking forever ago, and its going to be sometime tomorrow before the friggin thing syncs. How do you people deal with this its quicker to sync the entire years of bitcoin chain.

Ongoin attack on Poloniex...
Someone claiming to bcx said it was dropping in 3 minutes and it did. Impressive to say the least because I would assume Poloniex would have kickass ddos mitigation. It does not seems to be DDoS, chat is working fine... Something is fishy here...

On the first page of the Monero thread there is a link to download the blockchain. It will still take some time to sync but will be alot quicker than syncing from forever ago.

Good point as I'm sure lots of people that might not have been trading have moved their coins there. Until this happened, I really didn't know that Poloniex was like the main exchange for XMR.
