With a new cable, not the one included, it seemed to work again for a while. There's two connected, to two different USB buses, but i'll look into the the powered usb advise too.

After a while however, i got this:

[2015-01-11 20:59:14] AMU0: invalid nonce - HW error
[2015-01-11 21:15:01] AMU0: invalid nonce - HW error
[2015-01-11 22:12:15] AMU 7 SendWork usb write err:(-1) LIBUSB_ERROR_IO
[2015-01-11 22:12:15] AMU 7 attempted reset got err:(0) LIBUSB_SUCCESS

Then the now troublesome unit zombied. Got it up again briefly after some reset/un/re-plugs. Then it just zombied again.

AMU ? It doesnt seem to be detecting the U3 properly. It should be saying AU3.  Are you using cgminer 4.9.0 with out any settings to test. Also the USB should be as short as possible, long ones seem to have issues.

I have 2 running with 2 short USB cables that I bought seperatly. I had the same errors as yours with the stock cable and then some other longer cable. I suspect its voltage related.

Well unfortunately something went wrong with my test and both miners stopped mining. When I went to inspect the issue the PSU was off.. Nothing on the PSU was running. Not sure what happened, maybe the PSU is faulty.

I will try another power supply if I can but I can confirm it was running at least 36 hours.

@irobb how is your looking? Still going? Smiley

Still running with no zombies. If I can find one cheaper than I got off Amazon I will get another since I'll be returning this unit this week.

Bitmain continues to distribute its own binaries ignoring any development I put into mainline cgminer so their driver still uses a different driver name, trashes other icarus drivers, needs lots of weird command line options to get working etc. So people using their binary get devices as AMU.

Yes please, see how it is on a powered USB hub. Those LIBUSB errors nearly always disappear when you add in a hub.

Has anyone experienced problems with the Antminer U3 starting to "scream" all the sudden? Every once and a while (sometimes a few hours after plugging it in, sometimes a day or two) it starts making a repeated high pitched alarm type noise and stops mining entirely.  The only way to reset it seem to be to unplug it from both power and USB.

I'm really considering trying a return through Amazon.

Yes, has happened to me a number of times.  It stopped happening once the adapter melted and I started to use better supply of voltage (i.e, my PSU).

these things come with an underpowered PSU out of the box and horribly written drivers as mentioned above. Advice to all first step is toss the brick and connect it to a real PSU, i haven't cracked mine open yet but I would also get the thermal paste is poorly applied, finally id make sure your running the latest version of cgminer or the latest version posted on bitmain's website (I haven't tested that one yet myself)

Why are you returning if you got it to work without going ZOMBIE?

I am happy with 62

I read that going more than that starts to dramaticlly increase the wattage at the wall. currently it works out  slightly less than 1watt per 1gh/s (about 0.95watt @ 800mV). i have a watt-o-meter and my PC and the 2 U3 are draining 162watts 24/7 from which 40watts is the PC then 60watts x 2 from the other PSU

I had a duff one form the same guy I bought these two. I was lucky to find them cheap on amazon because I know if something went bad returns would be a simple.. and my hunch was correct. The second one was running 45ghs and there was nothing I could do to increase it. Returned and the 3rd one runs like the 1st. No problem at all.

24hour mark now broken and niether the fixer upper nor the stock one ZOMBIED... Interesting.

Please upgrade the latest firmware if it still can start to work..RMA is accepted if it is still working on 45G at below codes:
Code:
cgminer.exe  --bmsc-options 115200:0.54 -o stratum.antpool.com:3336 -u antminer_1 -o p2p.antpool.com:25 -u antminer_2 --bmsc-voltage 0830  --bmsc-freq 0982

cannot seem to find any firmware updates on the supportpages?

Its not on there yet (bumped for it to be uploaded), in the meantime I've mirrored it here because I already had a copy.

How do you update the firmware on these U3's?

Dogie, why did Bitmain send CK a unit to develop CGMiner support (for which it appears he did a fine job!) for this device and then not use it?

You don't, you change the cgminer.

You can use his work on non fork cgminer. As for why, maybe their experience is still using the icarus protocol.

no firmware update on these they are not running any linux embedded controller like the S1, S2, S3, S4 etc these are essentially a U1, U2 style USB device only with 4 chips in it instead of 1. Best bet is to use the latest version of cgminer this proved the most stable for me. Bitmain did release a new version a few days ago on his site but i run all mine on a raspberry pi so i haven't tested it myself

I get the same result when stopping cgminer that shows only 3 of the 4 chips being used. Does anyone one know if this is just a limitation of the current software or is the information displayed just misleading?

I'm still hashing between 63GH and 66GH right now so I guess it's not performing around expectations....

If most of the units are going zombie because of thermal load is it possible yours isn't because it's only running 3/4?  I would think yours would only draw 3/4 the power and generate 3/4 the heat.

Its a myth / coincidence that zombie and thermal paste have a connection.

Forgive me if this has already been asked, but this thread is 26 pages long and the forum's search function is... well, crap.

I've successfully tested my new U3 on a Windows 7 computer.  Now I'm trying to set it up to run on a Eee PC that I have lying around, running XP.  After some fussing with Zadig, it appears to have installed the driver, but when I run CGminer it doesn't find the USB device.  I've tried CGminer 4.9.0 and 4.6.1

In the Device Manager I notice that the USB to UART bridge controller is running OK, but there is an unknown device listed under Other Devices.  However this does not disappear when I unplug the U3, whereas the bridge controller does.

And that's everything my little brain knows.  Hopefully someone knows what the issue is and can tell me what to kick.  TIA.
