101  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 14, 2022, 01:09:20 PM

I think shaming businesses (or individuals) for using energy is a bad approach in general, instead support rules/regulations to make sure the energy produced is clean. If your area produces all energy from coal or gas, that's the problem right there, don't blame the consumer of electricity. Perhaps this is stating the obvious, and the real agenda is to smear Bitcoin mining due to politics so basic logic doesn't apply, but just in case someone actually believes the claims from mainstream media.

I think shaming businesses or individuals is a detestable way of trying to influence and is rife in our modern social environment.
Instead of shaming I believe bad behaviour should be ignored and opponents to the said bad behaviour should be looking to promote a better alternative and highlight areas where things are going well.
Maybe I am an idealist and naive.
Just saying that I would like to see more positive behaviour from my fellow human rather than a shouting down everyone from our soapboxes.
Luckily for us most here at WO are a little more gentlemanly!

There is a thread for this

Keep the WO vaxx-talk  free

We are here to Bitcoin and to be watching when MOON.

I can't, for not being a WO regular/not having a hat bob deleted my posts in that thread so.. Sometimes I want to talk, too.

You could start your own thread.
If you get any replies then at least they will be from people interested in the subject.
I know we talk about a great number of things in this thread but let’s try and keep it OT.
Thanks.

How to open a door - Finnish instructional video from 1979

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wof0xPUmW38

How he actually goes through the door in the end seems really weird or is it just me?
I've never entered a door with the smallest gap possible and turned around in one movement like that, as far as I remember.

Maybe I've been doing it wrong?  Grin

That's why videos like this one are so important, like it says in the video, most people do it wrong.
After finding this video I have significantly improved my door opening skills, I will never be as good as that man though, he is obviously a professional.

Love the comments.

Does he have one showing how to open a door for others?
I seam to be slamming them behind me.
Clearly very skilled and I would like to impress on my other half by becoming more proficient myself. /s

This is the great bete noir of our time.

We have known for a long time that the way Bitcoin REALLY gains value is at the cost of social stability.  And we are seeing it play out in real time today.

And it is like a race.  We are becoming paper millionaires, and even higher, but at the same time the unit of account we use today is melting down.

$10,000,000 BTC is a bad thing if a loaf of bread is $100k.

I think there are SOME people whose plan (or hope) is the financial system melts down completely so we can bring forth (pick your story here) socialism, and CDBCs, or freedom and BTC.

And of course WE are all rooting for the latter.  But we will also be affected by the absolutely and dire misery that this road leads to.

But a slow orderly march to a sound monetary system???  Chances of that?  Seeming to get smaller by the day to me.

The longer the Bitcoin network is able to grow while the legacy financial system is still working (such as it is), the smoother the transition may be. It is essential for the alternative to be more or less ready when the old system collapses, otherwise the ensuing chaos will scare us into appointing strongmen promising to rebuild what was before.

Atheism doesn't arise after you burn down all the churches. In the same way, monetary freedom doesn't arise after the legacy financial system is destroyed. In both cases, we first have to change peoples' minds by showing them that alternatives not only exist, but are far more preferable to what is now. For that, the alternatives have to cross a threshold of accessibility and in Bitcoin's case also scalability.

Sometimes I think back to times before Bitcoin and how difficult it was to be in a position of criticising the status quo. Inevitably the question would come, delivered by a smug normie driven to use their last best fool-proof "gotcha": "if you are so smart then what is your proposed system? What is your solution?" *cricket noises*

Today I can point them to the white paper and depending on how charitable I'm feeling that day, either help them get on their way to understanding, or simply wish them the best of luck within the old system & HFSP.

EDIT: This made me think...how does everyone feel about explaining crypto to newcomers nowadays? Or participating in crypto discussions in general?

I am quite burned out on this. Back when I got into BTC I gave literal lectures to audiences about it. I would talk with anyone interested, sometimes for hours. But today? I feel like I've heard it all before one too many times. Replying to the media-driven FUD du jour. Hearing the same tired objections for the 1000x. Seeing the gargantuan chasm in understanding that even well-educated and smart people have to cross to get from normie-brain to Bitcoin understanding. I rarely engage with any of this anymore. Thinking there are enough resources to help you understand. In the end, everyone buys BTC at the price they deserve to.

I know how you feel about explaining to noobs.
For me I still have a go. If they seem genuinely interested then I give them a quick overview and then point them to some YouTube sources explaining the basics.
I also refer them to “the Bitcoin standard” by A. saifdean.
I also tell them that it will take quite a while to get to grips with even the basics and will engage with them further once they have done some basic homework.
As for parting with my precious as an incentive? Never!

Wasn't that long ago that we were celebrating BTC hitting WO post parity.

I wish.

Thanks for pointing out my obvious mistake.
Of course I meant page parity.
Still, something to look forward to hey.

Look at where we are now!
HODL on my fellow WOers.
109  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 13, 2021, 09:10:29 AM
Thanks. Do you have any experience with any of them?

I've used all 3 of them for several months. I'd rank them generally Nexo > Celsius > BlockFi. Those rankings could change depending on your situation or use case.

I have used Celsius as well as Blockfi. Another one to consider is ledn.io as it has/had better rates than the other two with higher deposit limits.
I never used them for a loan but only as a "savings" account to accrue more BTC.
I used all 3 simultaneously for around 6 months and they all performed as stated.
However, I was constantly paranoid that they were going to do a rug pull and in the end I felt that the 4 to 6 % return per annum was just not worth the risk of losing the capital.
They may well be legitimate businesses but history has shown us that there is a reason why we say "Not your keys, Not your coins".
I think I will stick with my lousy 200% by HODLing.

And you're absolutely right Richy, they seem to very standard and still available, such as https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/non-latching-relays/2452087. So, I'm off to get three of them.....

I wish I knew more about electrical stuff. And lots of other things....

Good call in also replacing any wiring you see, even if it doesn't look fried (or too fried). With wiring, looks can be deceiving...

This is good advice - wiring that gets hot tends to break down, increasing resistance, increasing electrical load until something breaks - like your relays.

Totally different situation but my Lotus used to eat alternators like they were going out of fashion, until we realised that the wiring was running too close to the manifold (mid-engine, packed engine bay, little space) the wiring was getting hot from the exhaust, starting to break down internally, increasing the load on the alternator until the alternator burnt out.  The solution was to splice in a new longer section to the loom and re-route the cabling to the alternator so it didn't get so hot.

Perhaps something similar happens in your furnace?

(Note: I am not an electrician and my comments needed to be treated as such!)

Had an Elise myself and it had its fair share of problems too.

Hello fellow WO's.
Greetings from motherland China!

We have to be open and honest and have a conversation about how we go forward.
I say conversation, but of course I mean: you do what I say.
What, you thought this was a democracy? You thought wrong! Ask my pal Joe Biden what he thinks about fair elections! Ha ha ha!

The time has come to really, really, really ban Bitcoin now.
It is simply too harmful for the environment to mine Bitcoin.

You want to buy 100 million plastic dildos? Is no problem.
You want to move Tesla manufacturing to our country? Is no problem.
You want us to make lots of nonsense you don't need? Is no problem.
You want to mine a rare digital asset? Ho ho ho! Not so fast.
Is too dangerous!

Speak to Proudhon for more information.
His Maths and Sciences are what we base our environmental plans on.
We plan to be carbon neutral by tomorrow evening.

Thank you for your attention.

I cant believe that China has influence left. They have already "banned" bitcoin a thousand times and driven all the miners out. What else have they got left to fling at BTC?
There is only so many times one can cry Wolf before people stop taking notice.

Feels like we’re back in consolidation mode after clearing some leverage out of the system. Im hoping for some sideways trading throughout the weekend and the start of another leg up next week. The big concern at the moment is the action on Tether and what that could mean. USDT was blamed for the rejection of the spot ETF and has had trading halted on Coinbase. Could have a market effect.

The old Tether chestnut. I feel for them, always having to drag up that topic to manipulate the price. Thing is they can't really do anything about it, because if they do they will no longer have it as an attack vector. They lost China bans Bitcoin, I'm sure they do not want to lose Tether. If they lose that all they'll have left is Bitcoin is destroying the planet.

I am sure that the powers that be will dream up some other attack vector on Bitcoin should they lose the Tether FUD angle.
After all, it is human nature to be fearful and takes years of experience before being able to see it for what it is, an emotion. An emotion that with a little time and experience one realizes does not have a hold on you unless you let it have one.

So as long as young noobs keep joining the Bitcoin movement then there will always be an attack vector. Only when Bitcoin has become so widely adopted to be at around 90% saturation, will those attack vectors no longer be relevant.

In the meantime, those of us who have been in the game long enough to know that Bitcoin is the ultimate NGU coin can use the opportunity to continue to scoop up cheaps coins everytime the noobs give in to their fear.

I am supremely confident that this train cant be stopped now.

https://www.newsbtc.com/news/bitcoin/bitcoin-whale-wallet-with-150-million-activated-after-8-years/

And you guys scared one of these whales to move their coins.. Keep talking about "abandoned" coins and we might see some movement from old addresses.

This is just another reason the idea of "lost coins" is el stupido.  The ONLY person with the rights to move bitcoin is the holder of that (those) private key(s).

Period.

And it is their right to move them as they please.  Even if it frightens people, or means they are rich, or crashes the price.  Or proves they are Satoshi, or ANYTHING.  PERIOD.

I am not scared.  I still have the keys to my coins.

I suspect the vast majority of the “frozen” coins are not lost or abandon

pretend that the number is 4 million coins 2.4 million would be by long term holders not lost and movable. much as the ones above were just done.

It all an exercise in imagination when we are trying to guess 2049-2059 btc rules and decisions.

realistically I have 20 years left to live. based on family male history 77-86 years old is a common death age for men.

I don't see why there is a need to "recover" "lost or abandoned" coins.
Since BTC is divisible by so many digits it just means that the eco system will run on whatever coins are in circulation.
Hell we could have only 1 BTC actively being moved around and the system would still work.
There is absolutely no need to "recover" anything since the system functions just fine no matter how few coins are actively transacted.
Just use smaller pieces.

At this stage I don't understand why every Tom, Dick, Harry and their dogs aren't buying Bitcoin.

What the fuck are people waiting for?

The news is literally reporting in the UK that inflation will hit 5.4% next year.
I'm of the opinion they always under report this. So real figures will be higher surely.

People are fine with getting 5-6% minimum poorer every year yeah?

Are people under the illusion that the precious money they are shoving into their private pensions somehow won't be affected by this?

What the fuck are people doing?

Gold sucks as has been pointed out.
Property most people can't afford or becomes a fucking headache with renters etc.

Why exactly are people waiting and watching themselves getting poorer?

Still hoping on that "inevitable" lottery win as long as they keep playing?

As much as I hate to say it I think the reason is that most people still don’t understand what is going on. Others still dont know how to HODL bitcoin or how to get a hold of it or think it is still a “risky” investment due to the MSM scare mongering.
We need another cycle or even two before the masses really start to understand what is going on.
On a good note that means that it is still early for the rest of us.

Let me guess.
This recent price dump is another attempt at squeezing a bunch of noobs out of their retarded longs?
