1061  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do you supply the power to their multiple rigs and not blow breakers? on: April 16, 2013, 10:09:48 PM
A 220v 40amp line would increase the number of rigs you could run drastically.  Lots of people have had their homes or offices or warehouses wired up to provide such power.
1062  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I just bought a machine on: April 16, 2013, 10:07:36 PM
If BFL ever gets their production going smoothly then you will never see ROI (IMO, based on what I have read) - and the fact that ASICMINER will start producing units as well....but hey dont do it for the profit.
Litecoins *could* still provide an ROI, it just depends on how many people switch over to it (and switch over successfully... I tried 4 litecoin miners and they all crashed for me!)
1063  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Geico: You dun goofed. on: April 16, 2013, 10:06:07 PM
LOL.... When I first saw that, I knew what I was going to do next time I had to fly anywhere...
Have you ever considered carrying a hidden squeaky toy and squeaking it every time they touch you?
I have now...  Cheesy
Please have someone videotape it. I must see this.
If I do this, I promise to have it taped. The quality may suffer, though, since to avoid ruining the surprise, the videotaping must be surreptitious.
It would be awesome if a group of people flying together would all stand in line with each other, and do it one after the other.
1064  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL - Is this saga finally going to go away on: April 16, 2013, 10:04:06 PM
Far be it for me to defend BFL, but the best board assembly person I ever worked with was a 58 year-old lady. Don't underestimate what those ladies can do!  Cool

+1.  Who do you always see sewing patterns onto stocking for the grandkids or stitching together quilts?  Those things require precision too!
1065  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Geico: You dun goofed. on: April 16, 2013, 09:58:57 PM
I dunno, I thought it was funny.  Not as funny as most of the other ones they've done, but still funny.
1066  Economy / Speculation / Re: So, everyone knows about Bitcoin now... why isn't the price going up? on: April 16, 2013, 09:56:20 PM
I actually feel a lot better at todays price than  200+ days , more  solid , down to the earth feelings .

Yeah I know what you mean, it was so frantic in those days. It definitely feels like the hysteria is gone, and what do you know? the volume is back up, no one wanted to sell at 200, who knows how high it could have gone, but of course we know that answer now. Who the hell was jacking up the price? there was barely any volume during that time.
Volume has skyrocketed.  It just awes me that so many people are willing to sell right now than they were at 200.  If you were so confident in Bitcoin as to not sell at $200, why are you following herd mentality and selling at the low point?  Boggles my mind...
1067  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Has anyone proposed a coin that adjusts its supply to stabilize prices? on: April 16, 2013, 07:18:18 PM
I don't see how it could be done with a minor change specifically on the technical side??
Elaborate.

For that matter, you are assuming that supply is what is causing the variance, which is, imho, quite erroneous.
The main reason I have seen from watching it, is its current status as a commodity rather than a currency.
By virtue of it merely slowly spreading in usage, it will gradually become a currency.

It is important to note that SC is a "was" and not something that ended up functioning at all.
The method of doing it is quite simple - you only need to increase or decrease the supply of all current holders of Bitcoin by a certain percentage.  The difficulty is in determining how much it should be increased or decreased and when!  How could you possibly have a decentralized method of valuation determination?  Perhaps with a decentralized exchange, this would be possible.  I don't see it as feasible until then though, without a central entity involved.

Interestingly, this could be done entirely on the front-end of Bitcoin itself without modifying any of the inner-workings of Bitcoin.  Instead of displaying to the user how many Bitcoins they have, you display to the user how many "Credits" they have, or whatever you want to call the stable unit.  Then, have the client make regular calls to a central entity's server, who gives out an exchange rate of credits to Bitcoins.  The user would always pay X number of credits on the client side for, say, an apple, but the backend number of actual Bitcoins being traded would change.  The user would, however, see the number of credits in their account change depending on the most recent Bitcoin exchange rate.

I'm not sure that either of the two above solutions would solve any problems, other than psychological problems of people with less-than-average intelligence.

I agree with kokjo that a better "solution" would be forever keeping the 50 coin reward, because it would eventually level out to the point where 50 coins are, on average, getting lost while 50 coins are created.  People would be prone to speculating less, since they know that supply is unlimited (time-limited, but theoretically unlimited).  But then you have no way to reward early adopters, so getting such a Bitcoin-alt off the ground might be incredibly difficult or even infeasible.
1068  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2012-09-04 cnet.com - Bitcoin exchange BitFloor shuttered after virtual heist on: April 16, 2013, 06:24:35 PM
You guys gave me a heart attack until I realized that it's back in 2012.  Wink
LOL - same.  I thought, wtf, again??
1069  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many people never plan to repatriate BTC to FIAT on: April 16, 2013, 06:12:17 PM
I may, but only to pay off debt.

I hate debt.

My plan is to set aside certain reserves of BTC for various events or timelines.  For example:
- 100 BTC for when it can buy me a house (or possibly, just pay off the one I already have)
- 50 BTC for when it can pay off my school loans
- 50 BTC to not be used for 10 years
- 25 BTC to not be used for 25 years

Something along those lines.  Then whatever else I have, I'll use whenever I feel like it for whatever I feel like.
1070  Economy / Gambling / Re: 80 BTC bet between Micon and mrb (are BFL ASICs real?) on: April 16, 2013, 06:04:47 PM
mrb: I can provide an escrow code if you're happy for me to escrow the bet.  PM me your email address and (optionally) your GPG public key.

I've sent escrow codes to Micon and mrb.

I'll quote the terms of the recent bets here as a hedge against future shenanigans:

...
BFL will ship out at least 3 ASIC mining devices capable of at least 150MH/s per watt to at least 3 customers (at least 1 device per customer) who post pix & verify hashrate by 12:01am EST 7/1.  No BFL-employee or anyone that has been to BFL labs personally to settle the 3 customers pix & hashrate.  If BFL ships a device that does not meet the power specification, but then does ship out at least 3 ASIC mining devices meeting the above criteria before the deadline, then SgtSpike wins the bet.
...

I would like to move forward on our measly 5 BTC bet with the same terms written above. Are we using Escrow?

I'm assuming we replace 'SgtSpike' with 'CrazyBlane' or 'mrb' in the quoted paragraph.  Having SgtSpike win those 2 bets on a technicality would suck.  Smiley
Lol, I would never try to collect on something like that.  It's obvious that the intention is for a bet between CrazyBlane and Micon, and doesn't involve me at all.  But sure, it's probably better to get all ducks in a row.
1071  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What could cause a single digit crash...and could bitcoin recover? on: April 16, 2013, 05:28:05 PM
An anti-Bitcoin government ruling could certainly cause the price to plummet to the single digits.
1072  Bitcoin / Project Development / Web-wide Bitcointip Bot on: April 16, 2013, 05:02:56 PM
I think a web wide bitcoin tipping bot would be amazing.  And I think I have some ideas on how it could be accomplished...

Basic Requirements:
1) Has to know what pages people have tipped on.
2) Has to be able to create posts on said pages.
3) Has to be able to authenticate individuals (so one person cannot withdraw another person's Bitcoins).

How can we do this?
1) User submits URL of page to tipping bot after writing up a tip.  The tipping bot forever stores that page and checks it in the future for more tips at regular intervals.
2) This is the biggest problem, and might require a lot of manual work for each new page submitted.  I am thinking that the bot could store credentials for each domain managed, then attempt to use said credentials to log in whenever a new URL is submitted under that domain.  If it fails, then whoever is managing the bot would be notified.
3) Authentication is another big challenge.  Many login systems are unique in how they will act, and whether they will let users send private messages to each other.  So, different rules will have to be created with each system.  Disqus, for example, allows users to "leave a message" on another user's profile, but those are likely public.  Still, allowing users to withdraw money publicly would still be better than nothing.

Bottom line is, it could most definitely work, but would require a lot of setup for each comments system that is used.  It is good that news sites are trending towards using already-standardized platforms (like Disqus and OpenID), and may be incredibly easy to implement because of that.  But there are more websites than just news site that people might want to tip on.  Forums, for example, would be a big one.  The user could certainly sign the bot up for numerous forums as needed, but the forum admin could always ban the bot and cause tipping to come to a standstill there.

Thoughts?
1073  Economy / Speculation / Re: There is no price discovery... on: April 16, 2013, 04:29:06 PM
They will run the price up to 80-85 and then it will collapse again. Like clockwork.
Looks like one tinfoil hat wasn't enough - here, better double up!
1074  Economy / Speculation / Re: There is no price discovery... on: April 16, 2013, 04:19:03 PM
The price dropped 80% over the course of five days and you're surprised it's bouncing back again?

MtGox ran the price up in the first place.
Here's a tinfoil hat for ya.   Cheesy
1075  Economy / Goods / Re: Foodler.com Feeding Bitcoiners across the US on: April 16, 2013, 03:53:36 PM
It wouldn't be too difficult for them to make this work for people actually sitting and eating in these restaurants - since the restaurants are already integrated into foodler, they wouldn't have to set up any special POS system.
*sits down at table*
*opens up foodler on smartphone*
*sets delivery address to restaurant*
*submits order*
*waitress arrives*
"Would you like to start out with something to drink?"
"No ma'am.  I've already ordered."
*Huh*

* sits down at table
* waitress: "we are foodler enabled, but I can process the order the old fashioned way if you prefer"
* "foodler is perfect - we would not have come otherwise"
* opens up foodler on smartphone
* ticks 'eating in restaurant' box - table 6 from dropdown menu
* "what would your recommend?" - "chicken"
* submits order
* drinks arrive
* "cheers everyone"
* food arrives
* a little bland - salt added. Chicken undercooked, but not dangerous
* food is eaten
* "how is the food sir?" - "very nice thank you"
* waitress's QR scanned from her T-shirt - tip sent
Alright alright, I didn't know that there was an eating in restaurant option!
1076  Economy / Goods / Re: I'm selling a first-day 9/7/11 Casascius coin... on: April 16, 2013, 03:37:50 PM
Yes I am aware of the typo on the holograms.  Didn't see it until it was too late.  Another batch of holograms is in production with this fixed (and other improvements).
Waaaat? You mean all coins purchased before now are the "rare 2011 casascius with typo" and sell for a much higher price at some point in the future? Nice! Wink
Now he looks like a psychic.
He called it..!  I actually bought one of his last two of the 2011 coins a while back.
1077  Economy / Goods / Re: I'm selling a first-day 9/7/11 Casascius coin... on: April 16, 2013, 03:37:20 PM
I was hoping for more initially (because of how much previous coins had sold for), but with the recent BTC price drop, I am happy with where it ended up!

Will be shipping it out this evening...
1078  Economy / Goods / Re: I'm selling a first-day 9/7/11 Casascius coin... on: April 16, 2013, 03:03:23 PM
The current bidder is 1 feedback with 0% positive. Items bid on - 26. They are bidding on 20 other items in coins and money. Note that sellers cannot leave a negative feedback on crap buyers, they can only leave a positive because eBay is so f**ked.

They dumped a bid on Apr-13-13 00:24:26 that is still the top bid, don't expect this to turn out well if that guy wins. I would cancel this kind of bidder immediately, but you've let it go on too long that it may have discouraged other bidders.
Damn... I just did, and it dropped the price down to $709, but probably worth it.  I didn't realize I could check how many items he had bid on, but I was certainly suspicious of his low feedback score.  Thank you very much for the heads up on that!

StarenseN - I replied to your PM.  Good luck!
