Will Ordinals and NFTs Destroy Bitcoin?
www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJr8yUf3dYk

Energy usage of bitcoin is high enough as it is and should be reserved for more worthwhile applications. Transferring around monkey jpegs and/or porn images on the network is a pointless waste of energy. The congestion and bloat this would create will lead to higher fees for users, clog and slow the network with useless traffic that can potentially compromise security with overcomplexity and bloat. Bitcoin should remain true to its core mission and principles-- the most sound money ever created and greatest store of value.

Once you try to be too many things and try to please everyone, you just become another stupid altcoin.
Leave the idiots to play around with their ethereum and solana, monkey pics, etc.

NFT is a scam and just plain stupid and it doesn't matter which network it's being run on. Running it on any shitcoin blockchain doesn't affect me as a Bitcoin maxi (haha) as long as it stays away from Bitcoin network. Ethereum is notorious for letting various scammers use their network so nothing new here. Perhaps it will help some peeps to see the light and steer clear from shitcoins. Cool
1262  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase closing my account for no reason on: February 02, 2023, 10:23:04 PM
Try contacting them, but there's a decent chance that they won't provide you with a specific reason and will simply answer with a script reply and refer you to their Terms of Service, which is likely to mention that they have every right to close your account at any time. Was your account completely verified? Have you received anything prior to that? You've at least been offered to withdraw your balance; some other exchange or service could have probably seized your money and blamed you for an unreasonable reason.

Unfortunately, this is subject to happen at any time since most centralized services claim in their TOS that they have every right to close your account without having to provide you with a valid reason.

They're not replying to my tickets. Yes, my account was completely verified. No, I haven't received any notice/warning before this happened.

I suspect that perhaps my account received some of the "tainted" coins. That's the only possibility I can think of.
1263  Economy / Economics / Re: There is deflation in countries where Russians have been fleeing on: February 01, 2023, 05:49:55 PM
Since the war between Russia and Ukraine has begun, hundreds of thousands of Russians are leaving Russia and moving in another countries. I hope it's clear that majority of these people who leave Russia are educated and/or rich, i.e. the people who are the brain and drive Russia.

One of the most popular destinations for them are Kazakhstan, Georgia and Armenia.

Kazakhstani Tenge has gained 15% against the dollar since the start of Russia - Ukraine war.
Georgian Lari has gained 38% against the dollar since the start of Russia - Ukraine war.
Armenian Dram has gained 35% against the dollar since the start of Russia - Ukraine war.

Food prices in Armenia are partially decreased compared to last year
I can't find legit information about what's happening in Kazakhstani and Georgia but from my quick investigation, it seems that prices are dramatically increasing in these countries despite the fact that Kazakhstani gained 15% and Georgia gained 38% dominance against the dollar.

Is anyone here from these three countries? What's going on there? Did the wave of mostly rich Russian immigrants positively affected your country?

Can't comment much on Armenia and Georgia, but I've heard mostly naturalized Russian citizens from eastern CIS (ex USSR) states were fleeing to Kazakhstan. They are neither rich nor ethnically Russian.
1264  Economy / Gambling / Re: Arbitrage betting tips on: February 01, 2023, 04:37:13 PM
You should have stated how risky arbitrage/matched betting is and warned gamblers properly as I mentioned earlier op. Some people clearly don't know much about it and could end up getting limited in some markets or losing their accounts.

Pinny/Betfair won't limit accounts, but crypto books will 100% do it once they find out that you are arbing. Tip: Do your research people!

How will they be able to find it out? Could you elaborate please? I thought that bookies don't share information about their users (is it even legit?). How exactly it happens?
1265  Economy / Gambling / Re: Arbitrage betting tips on: January 31, 2023, 09:34:32 PM
As I see very negative attitude in this thread, I am not sure should I even continue this thread.
Is there any interest in this ?

Please continue, great arbitrage tips, keep em coming. Especially interested in tennis betting tips. AO is over, but there's big WTA tournament in Abu Dhabi coming soon (next week?). Would love to receive some arbitrage betting tips!  Cool

IS IT POSSIBLE TO MINE BITCOIN IN LOPTOP PLZ TELL ME THE PROCESS?PLEASE TELL ME THE PROCESS.

In short: no. But I believe you can still mine some shitcoins on your laptop (CPU or GPU) and sell/convert them to Bitcoin. I can't comment if it's profitable or not, because I don't have any info on where you are located, what is the electricity price in your country etc.
1267  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My greatest fear about Bitcoin Halving. on: January 31, 2023, 08:22:01 PM
Bitcoin halving is characterised by price boom and this is a general believe of some bitcoiners and members of this forum.
My greatest fear is; what if 2024 halving comes and go without any kind of bull run? Don't you think that there will be a serious problem and panic in the industry?
This is because 2024 halving is the greatest available hype that can move the market. Besides that, I don't see any possible wave that can move Bitcoin to a new ATH. Unless US government will have to make BTC a legal tender.

Fear not, Bitcoin cycle always ends with a bullrun. It may be double-top or premature top, a bit earlier or a tad later but it's going to happen. I'm not sure what kind of ATH you are expecting, but anything above $100k is ok with me (I guess for many peeps here). Yeah, $100k+ is not exactly x20 or x30 we got used to during the early cycles but it's way better than $16k! I'm an optimist, glass half full type of personality, so my guess is something between $200k and $450k. Btw what exactly you mean by "without any kind of bull run"? Does reaching the previous cycle's ATH count as "no bull run"?  Cool

Does anyone have any horror stories about airports were they were threated like criminals and terrorists?
Last time, there was a big guy feeling me up before departure, but that's about it.
And when I come back they like to see if they can tax me on something, but my laptop is old.

This! I'm also trying to use my old laptop for travel. When the guys at the airport security see it, they're probably like: ok, let's give this guy some money so he could buy a new laptop, this one is ancient. And for sure, nobody would ever try to steal it!   Grin
1269  Economy / Gambling / Re: 🔮 Futuur - Predict the Future! 🔮 on: January 31, 2023, 07:11:26 PM
🔮 Howdy, Forecasters! 🔮

We’re delighted to announce that Futuur, the world’s leading play-money prediction market, is now offering real-money markets in Bitcoin BTC!

Futuur is a prediction market, a people-powered forecasting engine where you can bet on real-world events, from sports to politics to science and everything in between. Our mission is to help improve decision-making by generating more accurate predictions about the greatest possible range of future events.  We do this by aggregating the “wisdom of the crowd” into a single, easy to understand percentage estimate for the likelihood of that event to occur.

It’s totally free to join and bet as much as you want using Ooms, our play-money currency! We’ve done our best to make the interface fast, fun, and social. Comment on markets, follow your friends to find out what they’re forecasting, and make your way up our leaderboards!

We have been operating play-money markets since 2017, and to date have resolved more than 35,000 markets with bets from over 15,000 forecasters. And we’ve seen a lot of success! Our average Brier score (the measurement statisticians use to evaluate the accuracy of probabilistic predictions) of 0.163 is a strong confirmation that our crowd-powered predictions actually work!

And now, you can bet with Bitcoin!  Bitcoin markets will operate in parallel to our Ooms markets, and will generate separate forecasts.  We think that this additional financial incentive -- more “skin in the game” -- will bring even more accurate forecasts as a result!

1270  Economy / Economics / Re: How to thrive with low income in a humble area on: January 31, 2023, 09:36:05 AM
One of the biggest difficults in life is to manage growing your patrimony and income, when earning minimum wage and living in poor areas where opportunities are scarce, as is the money circulating in the local economy. Some hints that could be useful:

Get rid of addictions/habits: addictions or habits (in mild cases) are harmful not only for your health, but also for your finances. Cigarettes and alcohol are responsible for consuming a large portion of the income from individuals living on minimum wage. It's not that unsual to find people spending at least 1$ on cigarettes daily, what after 1 month will result in 30$ expenses, which could be going into bitcoin investment, for an example.

Choose carefully where you go shopping: some supermarkets are more expensive than others. Shopping on physical stores is more expensive than shopping online. Don't go for the first price you see on the labels. Search for promotions, try to adequate your demand for products to your currently financial budget in a way you don't spend all your money in the end of the month.

The impression which matters is the one you have about yourself: forget about boasting yourself to friends and suitors around. Live a realistic life and don't pretend to have a superior lifestyle in order to make people's eyes shine in front of you. There is nothing wrong in displaying some style, it's actually pretty good and satisfactory, but only when we can really afford it.

Doesn't matter how depressing is your day, never give up: everyone has their depressing days, but these days can't become a rule in someone's life. Don't feel pitty of yourself, don't blame your life and your currently conditions. Think it's just temporary and that an exit from this situation is reachable with good will, effort, hard work and a positive attitude with people around you. Sometimes opportunities come from where you least expected, so be receptive to the society in general, while being careful with potential abusers of every kinds.

Step by step you are going to improve your financial status, be patient and determined. Good luck!

You forgot to mention the first and main hint to improve your financial situation - buy Bitcoin! The more money you keep in FIAT the poorer you become. Inflation is eating up your FIAT. Buy as much ass you can afford - just a couple of sats now and then. Don't buy that extra pack of cigarettes or extra bottle of beer.  Cool
1271  Economy / Gambling / Re: I accidentally deposited to self-excluded stake.com account. on: January 31, 2023, 08:07:04 AM
Like all the others I'll also advise you to ask for support about your issue because so far none of the members have experienced what you've experienced, update us so we'll also know if they will send the fund back or if you will have to wait for the self-exclusion to expire, I hope you did not self exclude yourself for a year.
This is a good topic it seldom happens but it really happens and this will become a reference for those who deposited then forgot they self-excluded themselves.

My account was self excluded for a year, 48 weeks left. Support told me that I have to wait for 48 weeks to be able to withdraw my funds. I guess I will wait Smiley

Great news! You can still have your funds when the self-exclusion expires, they're not lost. Additionally, you now have a year to try to get rid of your gambling addiction! Let's just hope you won't get addicted again, once the funds get unblocked. 3ETH sounds like a lot of money.  Grin
1272  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Approximately 384 Days until the next Bitcoin halving on: January 30, 2023, 11:06:58 PM
Lets not be so gloomy, I know my previous comment was and some other posts too.
But this could all be a good thing that previous bull run was cut short abruptly and we entered a bear market with multiple crashes. There could be an accumulated demand specially with the way economy has failed we could see more people thinking about hedging against their failing unlimited supply fiats and cause a much bigger rise than the cycle before last.  Cool

Yes and besides it's also possible that a 4 year bitcoin cycle is history and we're going to witness something completely different and yet unseen (I hope in a positive way haha). Previous cycle was ~a month shorter as we reached ATH in November 21. I hope this trend will be kept intact and this cycle will be even shorter but at the same time I don't think ATH is possible as early as 2024.  Cool
1273  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-ready linux distro on: January 30, 2023, 09:33:18 PM
Is there such a thing being developed and kept updated? What I mean is a distro that comes with preinstalled software that you would need for any Bitcoin related business (full node software like Core, another lightweight software like Electrum, all libraries pre-installed, Tor, some other useful tools and everything else declutted)

I ask this because if you were to for instance land in another country, and you needed to install everything from scratch, it would take a ton of time. If you could have everything in an .iso more or less ready to run, you would just get your laptop (which you wiped before crossing any borders) and install your linux Bitcoin distro, and leave it there installing everything while you chill on your hotel's swimming pool or something. After a while everything is ready so you just enter your passphrase or recover your wallet.dat which you temporarily left somewhere in the cloud encrypted and get your coins ready.

I know Tails has Electrum but it doesn't have Bitcoin Core. It also has a ton of stuff I don't need and Electrum is always outdated.

The idea would be a minimalist setup, with some sort of system that automatically downloads, verifies and compiles the required software and libraries during the installation process.

Oh no, sounds like a terrible idea and heaven for cybercriminals. There are just so many things that could go wrong potentially: phished distro's website, hacked distro's website, phished repo, hacked repo, malicious developers, backdoor/trojan in OS, backdoor in wallet software etc etc etc... I mean such a distro, once launched will become a bullseye and a magnet for all sorts of crypto criminals. Easy way to lose your hard earned coins...  Sad
1274  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Doxxed team can help a new gambling platform? on: January 30, 2023, 09:37:53 AM
I can speak for myself, I'm not sure if my pov is common or not. I feel more safe when a gambling website is registered with a gambling authority (no matter where in the world). Just gives me that extra feeling of security. I'm not really interested who runs/maintains the casino and their identity. But that's just me of course.
we all have our own decision about when and how we conduct or gambling activities , while you are looking for registered sites , I am for those who had been running for long time even if they are or not registered because that way I am more sure of their activities and their behavior as people will tell you who they are and not just because they have license that sometimes caring about nothing as they can still manage to scam players.

You know, even well-known popular casinos sometimes refuse to pay the winners (not all of them obviously). At least you can see online reviews here and there claiming they didn't pay this and that. I know, sometimes these are false accusations, but still, certain negative reviews can be verified and are credible.  Roll Eyes
1275  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Guidance for accepting lighting BTC on website on: January 29, 2023, 10:45:55 PM
Hello
I want some guidance to accept L. Bitcoin on my website preferably in PHP.
If it is not available then help me understand how can we generate invoices and how can we confirm if they have been paid.
Thanks

You could use any ready-made solution/plugin which will work out of the box for you (like Bitpay). The downside is that these services are paid you need to pay a certain fee or %.

Second option is a free service for example from blockchain.com. In this case you'll need some custom code, so to hire a developer etc.
1276  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: If There could be A Time where A Man itself will be like wallet? on: January 29, 2023, 09:36:53 PM
Sounds like something so overengineered that it'll go unused by most and will probably be vulnerable to other attacks. Most biometric systems are either insecure or unfeasible (a lot can use pattern matching and have multiple successes with different people).

It might become an additional layer of authentication but will face other issues (what if you're ill or in a space where you don't want to talk). Also what stops someone from recording you saying something (unless it gets you to say a random work that's "easy" to pronounce).

True that, but a lot nicer idea is to use human brain as a storage for your wallet.dat. The only issue then would be an interface to use it as computers and terminals can't read mind. Voice/facial/iris recognition is unsafe and prone to forgery (photos, 3d models etc) so we need something else. I guess only fingerprints are truly unique.  Huh
1277  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it safe to acquire Bitcoin without having the basic knowledge? on: January 29, 2023, 05:22:11 PM
I was talking to a neighbour within the weekend and suddenly he grew so much passion in wanting to invest but now the problem is that his wanting me do this for him with excuses of not having the basic knowledge and I've told him to Google and do his own research about it.
I want to know if it's safe to buy Bitcoin without having the basic knowledge of it ?

Well, you could just spare him a minute of your time and a) create a wallet or an account at a crypto exchange b) help him to transfer funds and buy Bitcoin c) help him secure his password/keys and explain some security basics. I believe that eventually he will learn Bitcoin. You don't require any special IT knowledge or something, but you do need to be careful - treat Bitcoin like cash money. I've seen total noobs successfully hodling for years and crypto pros losing it all to hacks and scams within days.  Grin
1278  Economy / Economics / Re: When your passive income equals or slightly above your salary, what would you do on: January 29, 2023, 12:36:50 PM

I have been in a job I detested and although I somehow managed to stay at it for up to 4 years, I didn't even for once let go of my passionate hobby and other passive streams of income I was interested in at the time.
Today, one of my passive interests pays more than my salary. My mind has been yearning for a resignation, but opinions of others and family bears the message of patience with the job I so much detest for reasons ranging from inflation to fear of the unknown.

If you were in my shoes, what would be the best advice you would give yourself and adhere to in this instance?

I don't think you should take any advice received here seriously, simply because people are different and there are many opinions and points of view. How tired you are, how desperate you are to keep your job, what are your goals in life etc... if you hate the job really bad, just let go, quit and go on with your profitable hobbies. If it's bearable, keep it and again, spend time on your hobbies. Also, how much you earn: $60k salary + $60k passive a year or $600k salary + $600k passive income does make a difference, doesn't it?  Cool

1279  Economy / Economics / Re: Russian Gas ban - A problem for Europe or suicide for Russia? on: January 28, 2023, 11:34:36 PM
great news Smiley

Russia is preparing to shut down refineries due to European sanctions.
Russian oil refineries are preparing for a forced stoppage of production due to the European embargo, under which oil products will fall after oil from February 5.
The downtime plan for oil refining, the largest manufacturing industry, which accounts for 15% of industrial production in Russia, will be a record in the history of available statistics in 2023, Reuters reports, citing data from Refinitiv Eikon.
In total, 7.9% of refinery capacity, or 26.55 million tons in terms of crude oil, will go to downtime and preventive repairs - 5.9 million tons more than in 2022. Actual downtime, as a rule, is twice the plan, recalls Reuters: at the end of last year, it amounted to almost 39.2 million tons.

The largest amount of idle capacity - 12.3% - is planned for Rosneft, Russia's largest mining company, which accounts for every second barrel extracted from the subsoil. At Lukoil and Gazprom Neft, the figures are several times lower - 5 and 4%, respectively.
In total, refineries that employ 120,000 Russians are preparing to cut production by 15% this year, a source familiar with the government's plans told Reuters earlier.
Sanctions on oil products, which Russia has traditionally exported to Europe, will have a much greater impact than an oil embargo, he explained: it is unlikely that it will be possible to collect a “shadow fleet” for diesel and gasoline, since the parties are usually smaller in volume, and in order to smuggling them into Asia would require many more ships.

According to the IEA, Russia exported on average about 1.2 million barrels of oil products per day in 2022. The closed European market will bring down volumes by 5 times - by the end of the first quarter, about a million barrels of daily exports will be left without buyers, BCS analyst Ronald Smith estimates.
Russia will not be able to produce oil products “for storage”: there are simply no storage facilities in the country where it would be possible to fill in the unsold. One option is to export more unrefined oil, writes Reuters. But how to do this remains a mystery: even the current volumes - 3-4 million barrels per day - are kept by oilmen at the price of huge discounts, offering barrels at half price. And such a policy “runs counter to the interests of the budget” and “cannot continue indefinitely,” says Marcel Salikhov, head of the Institute of Energy and Finance.

The mission of Stichting Potamos is to support independent journalism in Russia and the CIS countries. Freedom of the press and freedom of information are vital for gathering and distributing reliable, fact-based news.

Project: Funding English- and Russian-language The Moscow Times - EUR 20,000 (15 November 2021)

Potamos Foundation owns The Moscow Times, an independent English- and Russian-language online newspaper. The English-language newspaper was published on paper in Russia from 1992 to 2017 and was both distributed for free and sold as a subscription. The newspaper was popular among foreign citizens living in Moscow and English-speaking Russians. The newspaper became online-only in July 2017 and launched its Russian-language service in 2020.

Journalistically, The Moscow Times is back and perhaps more impactful than ever before. The Russian edition offers an opportunity to give an extra boost to the brand. The Boomgaard Foundation contributes financially to this independent newspaper and to the future of a generation of young Russian journalists.

After further googling our little Stichting Potamos investigation leads us to Eliot Higgins and Bellingcat. I'm sure you know Bellingcat is a MI6/CIA sockpuppet, just to make sure here's Eliot Higgins' twitter feed: https://twitter.com/eliothiggins/

In other words - this website has nothing to do with Russian state media (or Russian media at all?) apart from the .ru domain apparently. I'm actually a bit shocked this website hasn't been taken down in putinist Russia for so long.  Grin
1280  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Issues with Proof-of-Work on: January 28, 2023, 10:06:07 PM
after doing dev work with ethereum and bitcoin it seems that both consensus options are blatantly fairly flawed. POW has obvious scaling issues and POS seems like a bandaid solution with wealthy people automatically being allocated more currency through an infinitely compounding cycle. Is the crypto/blockchain community not open to new type of consensus? It seems like POW and POS just keep getting updated rather than addressing the real issue and switching base mechanisms. Do others just not see issues with POW or POS?

Not sure how POW is connected with scaling issues? What exactly do you mean? Please elaborate.

With POS it's sort of clear - selling/giving control of the blockchain to billionaires/corporations. Never gonna happen to Bitcoin (hopefully). With the transition to POS, ETH was a shitcoin since day 1 but after POS it turned into a complete shitshow.  Grin
