1302  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] BitSafe Hardware Wallet Now Shipping on: March 14, 2013, 05:43:04 AM

Can you explain how it works?  How do you use it?

Advantages over a mass market encrypted USB stick?

Here is an entirely fictitious depiction of what is possible:
  • You open multibit and plug the BitSafe into your computer. One of your greyed-out wallets becomes highlighted.
  • You navigate to bitmit.com, and purchase something for 1.815 BTC. Multibit handles the Bitcoin URI and gives you a payment prompt.
  • After approving multibit's payment prompt, a light flashes on the BitSafe and "Send 1.815 BTC to www.bitmit.net?" appears on the OLED display.
  • You press the "approve" button on the BitSafe and the relevant Bitcoin transaction propagates to the rest of the Bitcoin network.

During this story, there is no opportunity for malware to intercept your private keys. Private key storage and transaction signing is done entirely on the BitSafe. Malware does not even have the opportunity to redirect funds to another address; using a proposed payment protocol (see https://gist.github.com/gavinandresen/4120476), addresses and amounts are signed by the merchant (in this case www.bitmit.net), authenticated by the BitSafe and displayed on its OLED display.

Thanks!  This is what I wanted to know, and this sounds very good.
1303  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Downloading the bitcoin blockchain on AT&T’s mobile plan would cost $360 on: March 14, 2013, 02:32:06 AM
The article is also untrue for the vast majority of people.  The blockchain is maybe 6 gig?

The most common plan at 3gb is $30/month plus $10 for each GB.  That turns into a $30 overage or if the entire usage was overage $60.  The only plan that would cause that is the 250mb plan which is a VERY dangerous plan to be on.

Allten, could you answer these questions?

Sure. Sorry for the slow response.

Currently, there is no client support so it doesn't work, yet. Someone42 was the first pioneer in open
source Hardware wallet and helped with a lot with the bitsafe.
Here is one of his first posts:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=78614.0

Hopefully, you can get an idea of how it will work and how to use it from that thread.

What's an encrypted USB stick? Is it just a wallet file that is encrypted?

Something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0SF0CK3099

It has a keypad and is hardware encrypted and needs no drivers.  It does on the other hand not offer anything bitcoin specific.

Since when was this bug in software? So how long did the testnet have time to discover it?

While a bug is easy to spot in hindsight, this but looks like it would have not easily emerged even in testnet unless testnet was being used quite hard.  Yes, I know complex scripts to can do that and if a series of complex to simulate transactions are not out there, maybe they should be.

Good luck finding someone willing to sell his/her preorder for less than they paid for it. (In Btc, we breath Btc, eat Btc etc so F fiat)

Probably better to close this thread since you are so focussed on USD!

Agreed, will only accept BTC as payment... looking for over 200 BTC... PM me with serious offers only...
Same.  I am probably willing to sell mine a little under 200 btc here.

I wrote this bytecode while I was taking a dump just now. I believe it solves the max block size problem with a brilliant solution that requires an IQ of at least 140 to understand. If you deny the validity of my solution then you simply do not have the mental acuteness people like Blinken and myself are blessed with. I would develop it further but I have already done enough for you people.

Thats text, not code.

Where do we begin?  Most code is text.  Being text therefore does not make it not code.  Most people would not refer to the mentioned block as text anyhow,  they would refer to it as hexidecimal code.

Is it valid code that executes on something?  That is above my IQ.  Smiley
1311  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Amateur hour on: March 12, 2013, 04:27:57 PM
I could sit down and write a software component that could easily generate billions of transactions without breaking a sweat once it is deployed to a few thousand boxes, if I so chose, and yet you are concerned about Satoishi Dice generating a few million transactions. The problem of high-volume transaction handling needs to be answered at a new level which is, unfortunately, way above the paygrade of the current development team.

It is hard to understand what you are even saying here.  Are you saying you are so good at software development that you could write a better client for handling high volume transactions or are you saying you could easily flood the network with transactions?

Hint: Both is not an answer because you would be wrong on both points.
1312  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTS Two Non Working Laptops on: March 12, 2013, 03:16:25 PM
Expect to find and replace motherboards on both of them. HP DV series are notorious for over 50% graphic chips failure rate and the crappy cooling solution coupled with low quality solder only accelerates the death of notebook.

Which creates a huge surplus of screens killing the value of those for resale as well.

1314  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Alert: chain fork caused by pre-0.8 clients dealing badly with large blocks on: March 12, 2013, 03:06:49 PM
I'm not sure if solutions have already been proposed for this issue, however surely a software update (v0.8.1?) could incorporate the following rule:

Limit block size or volume of transactions per block until < 10% of clients are running 0.7

The potential problem then is safeguarded against until a solid majority of users have upgraded to "fixed" software. Is neat, clean, quick, simple, future proof.

Eventually the same code could be removed from a client when < 1% of the network is running 0.7

No harm, no foul, no problems.

Since this is a mining problem, not a client problem, it does not even need a new release.  Miners can run .8 right now with a parameter change and everything is fine.  When the network has enough nodes not running .7 they can change the parameter.  The big problem is e-commerce sites as there are a lot more of them and the change may break things (though it should not).  Those are the people that need to upgrade.

1315  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Alert: chain fork caused by pre-0.8 clients dealing badly with large blocks on: March 12, 2013, 03:00:08 PM
So, can we all agree that rushing things to take care of the volume of transactions that are mostly comprised of satoshidice spam isn't a good idea and it's SD who needs to change and not bitcoin?

Not at all.  Heavy network traffic found a true BUG the hard way.  While SD traffic exasperated the problem, the problem was there.  Better now to find the bug and fix it then when the increased traffic is coming from something like newegg taking bitcoin.

It went down.  Lucky people with cash on the sidelines bought cheap coins, price went back up.

does this
need a wifi-adapter (usb)?
handle USB devices such as external 2.5" HDD to increas space?

how does this handle for the typical windows user? network drive? some sort of server-hotline?

It comes with a USB memory stick and the wifi is from the router so those are included.

It works through a webpage, once you connect to the box via wifi, all access leads to the page for sharing.  You can use an external hard drive in place of the usb memory stick as long as it is self powered.

so the pirate box has its own wifi, i connect to that wifi and see a website and have full read/write, is that correct?

Yes.  Full read/write on the web page but not delete!  The owner of the box can SSH in and delete stuff if needed.
1318  Economy / Goods / Re: [Wts] PirateBox and PirateBox t-shirts on: March 12, 2013, 03:12:30 AM
Just heard about this, it seems really interesting. Would you say it could make for an easy-to-use file server for around the house?

Does the router come with a SSID hiding option?

You could manually configure that or wireless security but there are better projects then piratebox for that application.  I am not sure what combo is best but it used to be done with but here is one place to look:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/USB_storage#Network_Option_C_-_Use_Samba_and_Windows_Network_Neighbourhood

You could use the same hardware I sell most probably but it might not be the best match either.  Piratebox is on the tplink units due to size and low power use, there also may be better choices there for a private home file server.
1319  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] BitcoinStore launching with 0% margin on: March 11, 2013, 09:39:59 PM
Hmm,

this has probably been asked before.

The shipping cost to Europe nearly eat up all savings compared to ordering something locally.

Do you have planned to add cheaper/local support for Europe if you expand further?

With the latest USPS price increases in February international shipping is usually not worth it.  The small flat rate box a few years ago was $13 and tracked.  Then it was $17 and poor tracking until February.  Now it is $24 and basically not tracked.

Even on a $200 item that is a 10% penalty.  They would need (and hopefully will) expand into a Euro warehouse and products to get the cost down.
