1341  Other / Meta / Re: my collection of Bitcointalk factoids. on: February 23, 2024, 08:37:49 AM
FACTOID TEN:
If you want to be a moderator, report many posts with accuracy. You will be noticed.
My Question or Input:
As far as I know, this hasn't happened in a long time. It's probably something left from Bitcointalk's early days.
By now, I've reported over 10k posts. Theymos only asked me once to be a Mod, and it was by mistake. I'd love to have a delete button though Cheesy

Quote
Theymos, is this the only criterion for being a moderator? I'll start my reporting job tomorrow  Cool
You'd be reporting posts for the wrong reasons. The right reason is a cleaner forum Wink
1342  Other / Meta / Re: Icopress ' Merit Source Application 🚩 on: February 23, 2024, 08:30:00 AM
One more example, LoyceV managed the campaign a long time ago, and as far as I know he is still open to such offers. Do you doubt that he would abuse his merit source status by running a campaign?
I'd argue the opposite: a campaign manager is supposed to read many of the posts made in his campaigns. That's a great opportunity to Merit the good ones (and remove the users with bad posts from the campaign). That's not Merit abuse, it's doing a good job.
It may mean the campaign manager sends more Merit to users in his campaigns, because he reads more of their posts. But that shouldn't matter much, as there are 100+ other Merit sources too.

To call it Merit abuse, there should be something in it for the campaign manager. Unless you're going to the extremes of Meriting his own alts to join his own campaigns, I don't see that happening. Most campaign managers have earned enough sMerit to be able to do that without being a source anyway.
1343  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Justin Bons Said Ethereum is More Decentralized Than Bitcoin on: February 23, 2024, 07:07:41 AM
Ethereum is the shitcoin that abandoned it's one USP "Code is law" the moment is was convenient for the rich creator and his friends. The guy in charge created a hard fork to protect their money instead of being a reliable block chain. The fact that it's centrally controlled is really all you need to know.
1344  Economy / Exchanges / Re: FixedFloat has been hacked (26M $) on: February 22, 2024, 04:41:27 PM
In an ideal scenario, an instant exchange only holds the user's funds until it has enough confirmations to complete the transaction and send back the other coin.
I don't get it. If I send Bitcoins and want monero, the moment I sent a coin it's not mine anymore, it's the property of the exchange and they release my monero coins, why would there be a limit on how long they can hold that?
The question was if they really don't store user funds. My answer was related to the short time between depositing and receiving your exchanged coins. It could be up to about an hour to get enough confirmations. What they do with the coins after that is indeed not your concern.
1345  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BPIP] Bitcointalk Public Information Project [Back in Action] on: February 22, 2024, 06:58:21 AM
I've been getting that error today when I click on the BPIP link in LoyceV's first half dozen weeks of his user pages. e.g. week 1
It looks like this link:
Code:
https://bpip.org/profile.aspx?p=
Was replaced by this link:
Code:
https://bpip.org/Profile?p=
I must have millions of links to the old location, and the forum must have them too. So a redirect would be nice Smiley
1346  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to have reasonable privacy safely when paying? on: February 22, 2024, 06:54:23 AM
Zero taint doesn't exist, unless you are willing to pay a premium in exchange for freshly minted coins.
You mean coins freshly minted by those evil miners who destroy the climate and emit more CO2 than my country? Wink See what I did there? There's always another reason if a government wants to call something "bad".
1347  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 22, 2024, 06:51:31 AM
I sincerely hope theymos will read this and consider it.
There's a much better chance of that if this would be posted in Moving to Cloudflare.
1348  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 21, 2024, 06:37:45 PM
Remember we were below 40K just 4 weeks ago, lol.
I've long forgotten that Smiley
1349  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 21, 2024, 06:27:02 PM
Monero  price might be a big opportunity? Or it is just doomed because bureaucrats don't like we to have it?
My take: Monero, like Bitcoin, is here to stay. If all centralized exchanges delist it, it only becomes closer to how it's supposed to be: private. Who are those people buying and holding privacy coins on a KYC exchange anyway?
1350  Economy / Services / Re: LoyceV's Avatar for Rent [first 🦊🦊🦊🦊4 YEARS🦊🦊🦊🦊 (257 weeks) rented out] on: February 21, 2024, 06:20:00 PM
Thanks again for your flawless timing! I had to rush dishes to make it (the old fashioned way, without involving time travel).
1351  Economy / Exchanges / Re: eXch - instant exchange BTC / LN / XMR / LTC / ETH / ERC20 on: February 21, 2024, 05:45:29 PM
A question remains if it would be more convenient for Exch to simply increase their XMR price 4,5% and charge 0,5% fees again
That makes arbitrage trading in the other direction possible. Say: buy XMR at Kraken, sell at eXch. I'm not sure what repercussions that would have.
1352  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Feb 2024] Fees are lower, wait for opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs on: February 21, 2024, 05:42:45 PM
I am waiting for less than 2 sat vB for my big consolidations.
Me too Smiley And more importantly: large Bitcoin companies (exchanges/casinos) are no doubt waiting too. In the past, we've seen large dumps of low-fee transactions in mempool once fees are low. It'll take a few days to confirm them all, after which they'll dump the next batch.
1353  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-qt 26.0 keeps crashing on Ubuntu 22.04.3 lts - Help please on: February 21, 2024, 05:38:56 PM
try to run bitcoin-qt as a root using sudo command.
Don't do this!

Running anything with rood privileges when it's not needed is very bad practice. It's an unnecessary security risks, and doesn't fix the actual problem. If permissions are a problem, check all file permissions. Or create a new user and start fresh. But don't give root-access to anything that doesn't require it.
1354  Economy / Reputation / Re: Plagiarist DiMarxist is back. No signature ban? on: February 21, 2024, 10:56:05 AM
I dont have data to back this but whenever I have prioritize Full Member and Sr Member account based on earned merits, I was deceived lol.
As a campaign manager, you mean? That supports my theory that some local boards have different standards than global boards. That's not necessarily a bad thing, until they move their posts to global boards.
1355  Other / Meta / Re: Why suddenly Cloudflare Human Verification is Coming Up? on: February 21, 2024, 09:19:48 AM
If this issue is considered annoying by most users - then admins need to solve it immediately.
I don't think there's anything theymos can do:
The Internet is seriously flawed if everyone needs to huddle behind these huge centralized anti-DDoS companies in order to survive...
I assume Cloudflare does this to mitigate a DDOS. That leaves 2 options: no forum access at all, or an annoying Cloudflare page before accessing the site.

And I fear it only gets worse. See Smart appliances were a mistake on Reddit: a washing machine that uploads 3.57 GB of data per day. IOT devices are supporting DDOS botnets now even without computers.
1356  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to have reasonable privacy safely when paying? on: February 21, 2024, 09:13:07 AM
That being said, I'm not sure what happens in a hypothetical scenario where you're accused of receiving bitcoin from drug lords. Does anyone know if there's a group of lawyers which have provided some insights regarding this matter, in the Bitcoin community?
I've seen many real life examples with banks: they just block the account. Here (in the Netherlands), coffee shops are allowed to sell marijuana. Government "tolerates" it, although technically it's still illegal. But they let it be. So the coffee shops buy marijuana from illegal producers. It's a typical Dutch thing: a half-arse solution that doesn't do justice to either side of the equation. The end result is that banks see legal companies that do business with criminals, so banks just stay away from them. Prostitution is legal in the Netherlands, but again banks reject them as customers. The small number of customers is simply not worth the hassle and risk to them.
With Bitcoin, I think it's a different story now. There are far more Bitcoin users than coffee shops and prostitutes, so rejecting them all would be a serious cost to the bank.
I don't know how a crypto exchange would handle this. I've seen reports of funds being frozen, but it's never clear if that's a legit case and what happens. My guess is they'll just report it to authorities so they're compliant.
Back to banks: In the Netherlands, almost 2 million "unusual transactions" per year get reported to government. The money laundering fines lead to a huge increase of reports. I think banks now report just about anything, so at least they did their part.

Also, cash in general, is used by regular people, grandmas etc. It doesn't have a bad rep (increasingly lately.. but in general, it is seen as normal).
That's an interesting way of putting it. Cash is used by more criminals than anything else. The only reason it's seen as "normal", is because government approves of it. And they approve because they can control (and print) it.
I would argue fiat cash is a terrible system, and the more you understand how it really works, the worse it gets.
One of the main reasons I like Bitcoin is because fiat is so terrible, and continuously loses value. But ending the enternal inflation isn't in the interest of the ones in power. That may change if Bitcoin ever becomes big enough. I imagine a future in which fiat money has to compete against a currency that doesn't have inflation, so they can no longer print unlimited amounts.
1357  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Feb 2024] Fees are lower, wait for opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs on: February 21, 2024, 08:11:07 AM
I have over 100 Segwit UTXOs under .001 BTC.

I am trying to figure out the most efficient strategy to consolidate my UTXOs. I realize that no one has a crystal ball regarding fees, so let's assume the fees stay where they are now.
That's a terrible assumption Tongue It's much more likely fees will either go up or down. And, looking at this graph, I assume it will go both directions once in a while.
If you're not in a hurry to spend those 100 small amounts, I would just wait. If fees drop low enough, I would consolidate them. Depending on how patient you are you could pay 2.1 sat/vbyte or 1.1 sat/vbyte in a few months. Or it may not happen for a very long time. But in that case, if you also have 0.02 BTC inputs, you can use those first.

Quote
1. In the first post off this thread it says this "If you have many different inputs, I suggest to consolidate them in multiple steps. Don't create a 100,000 bytes transaction with 500 inputs, but instead create many transactions with 20-ish inputs." Is this still a recommended plan?
It doesn't need to be 20, I'd probably go up to 50 now. It's not a hard limit.

Quote
It seems that each individual consolidation has a bit of overhead which could be saved by having only 1 consolidation, and then also that the multiple resulting UTXOs will also be smaller perhaps ending up as dust themselves.
Correct.

Quote
2. Is there a way in Trezor to see the size of each UTXO? Without that info, I have no idea whether a UTXO is dust at this price.
I don't know Trezor's own software, but you can connect your hardware wallet to Electrum. In Electrum, you can enable the Coins tab, where you can manually select (use CTRL) and spend (right mouse) the UTXOs you want. Note that you should never enter your Trezor seed in Electrum, just connect it and still sign your transactions on the Trezor.

Quote
3. If I do a consolidation with a very low fee hoping it happens to get picked up, and it doesn't complete, what will happen to it? How long until I can try again?
That depends on your wallet. I don't know whether or not Trezor keeps broadcasting your transaction. Currently, the mempool limit is 4.95 sat/vbyte, anything lower than that won't even broadcast. But the same link dropped from 1.8 GB to 918 MB this year, so I have high hopes we'll get a good opportunity to consolidate inputs at low fee.
1358  Economy / Exchanges / Re: FixedFloat has been hacked (26M $) on: February 21, 2024, 07:38:08 AM
Their description of the hack indicates that the security structure allowed hackers to access the basic functions of the service. It is a complete failure and appears to be access to cold storage
That is by definition impossible. If hackers can access it without physically breaking into the building, it wasn't cold storage.
Unless it was in cold storage and an employee manually approved a withdrawal from cold storage that was made without an deposit. That would be a new level of stupidity.

Is this true, does FixedFloat really “do not store user funds”? As far as I know, all centralized exchanges use user funds and do not isolate exchange assets from user assets, especially those that are not subject to regulatory laws.
In an ideal scenario, an instant exchange only holds the user's funds until it has enough confirmations to complete the transaction and send back the other coin.
1359  Economy / Exchanges / Re: FixedFloat has been hacked (26M $) on: February 20, 2024, 04:16:56 PM
Thanks, I didn't find it at archive.org.
This means they had more than 50% in their hot wallet. Needless to say: that's incredibly dumb.
1360  Economy / Reputation / Re: [Discussion] Bitcointalk Community Awards 🏆 on: February 20, 2024, 04:07:01 PM
We're going to need a new rule next year:
➥ No merit sending showing tits is allowed from nominees to users which nominated them
Then again, someone would be very disappointed Tongue
