How can I determine the speed of the network in specific practical algorithms?
If I understand correctly, in sha about 60 Th/s

From the 'getmininginfo' command I get:

Quote
  "difficulty_sha256d": 7183376.892611442,
  "difficulty_scrypt": 1927.887615271912,

which you can translate to hash per second I think as:
networkhashps = diff*14436620

So I get for network hashrates:
Sha = 104 Th/s
Scrypt = 27 Gh/s

For frame of reference, these values are about 3% of the bitcoin network and 1% of the litecoin network, respectively. It's kind of weird, Myriadcoin, which also merge mines both sha and scrypt (in addition to three other non merge-mined algos) has about 10x higher hashrate on sha and 15 or 20x higher on scrypt. Not sure why it would get so much more merged hash...

Monero does hide amounts now, actually, with the recent hardfork to allow ring confidential transactions (CT) transactions on mainnet. Also, as you point out ring signatures only obfuscate, but In conjunction with stealth addresses, you can achieve an anonymity set in the millions with maybe ten "hops".

IMO "hubs" sound like more of a vulnerability than a plus, as maybe counterparty might not know your IP, but the hub could be logging everyone's IP that connects.

Anyway, agree that usability is key, especially for byteball where there is less emphasis on decentralization and trustlessness.
1363  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DCR] Decred - Hybrid PoW/PoS | btcsuite Devs | Tons of New Features | Go on: January 24, 2017, 06:57:56 PM
In protest towards a single PoW pool continuously operating at > 50% of the nethash, I'm switching to votebits 0 for now.
Kindly ask that some PoW miners consider switching to a smaller pool.

The problem is that ocminer has the pool source and hasn't release it to the public.  If we could convince him to do this, we could have more even hashrate distribution.  I reached out to him about this a few days ago but have not gotten a response.  If others feel inclined to plead for his mercy, please do so.

I think myself and a few others might join you on your protest.  Between us, we have 1000's of tickets.

Maybe I missed some point you were making there dbt1033, but suprnova is one of the smaller PoW pools at the moment, has mostly been well under 15%. Coinmine.pl on the other hand, has usually well over 60% (checking right this instant, dcrstats shows it having 75% of the nethash). There's at least some 7 PoW pools for people to spread out their hashes already, so I don't think that the pool sources are missing generally speaking...

I do appreciate any joiners to this protest though!  Wink Kiss

Not mining ATM, but when I get home I'll buy some tickets on stakepool.eu

So instead of answering the question, you just attack me.... Isn't that what you accuse pretty much everyone else of doing?

Ok, does anyone else know if Shen quit the Monero project, and if so, what were his reasons and how does it impact future development plans?

It doesn't look like he quit necessarily, just not wanting to be majorly involved at the moment. In his last post on getmonero forum he says that Luigi and aminorex will probably work on implementation of ring multi SIG, but doesn't say that he won't be a part of bullet point #3, which is deep review after implementation.

Tbh, that whole episode was a bit bizarre, but I guess just another day off the week in crypto land.
1365  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] DigitalNote |XDN| - ICCO Announce - NEWS on: January 23, 2017, 02:37:52 PM
pretty quiet after all the announcements. Expected some more updates and information.

Honestly that ICCO announcement just sounds a little bit...crazy. Gather up 50% of all coins and give them to dNote so he can find some "institutional investor" to buy them at a 10x markup?  I'll believe it when I see it.
1366  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: January 22, 2017, 10:04:12 PM

So how do I remotely connect to my own (private) node which I run at home using Monero Wallet GUI or any capable mobile wallet app for that matter? Is it just a matter of using my external (WAN) IP address and port 18081 then? If so, how do I pick which node to connect to if more than one node are running at home either (for the sake of argument):

1. more than one monerod instances in a single machine (not sure if this is even possible - haven't tried it), or

2. a monerod instance in each of more than one machine (most likely)?

What are the possible privacy/traceability scenarios in employing the above method (remotely connecting to my own node that I control)?

You need to set up your router to port forward to the machine that you want to connect to. You also need to allow your daemon to accept remote connects (I think by default it only accepts connections from localhost). I don't think there are any privacy implications.
1367  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: January 22, 2017, 03:52:17 PM
what exactly are the benefits of bigger exchanges? cryptox is really fine!

why is everyone just focusing on the exchanges? what about the upcoming features?

Well, volume sucks so there's a big ass spread. You think 15% difference between buys and sells is ideal? Also, their site sucks, they don't even show volume for last 24 hrs, but eyeballing orders looks like just a couple BTC worth.
1368  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: January 22, 2017, 12:20:30 AM
Is there any Light Wallet coming up?i simply can't use the core/wallet/thing, it never syncs and it absolutely takes forever to download that blockchain x((.I can't do any transaction or anything.

You can run the core GUI or CLI wallet using a remote node, and then don't need to download the blockchain.

I prefer, "If 'if' were a spliff then we'd all be high"
1371  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][HUC] Huntercoin - a decentralized world within the Blockchain on: January 21, 2017, 02:31:02 AM
well one of the reason as stated above is in the old version we had to walk a mile ~ hour+ to get to the coins less combat, but now we are so close together, combat comes into play more often, so its now more noticeable

I always monitored/played the game since the begin and i never faced so high burst of blocks, except when f2pool halted a bit his power and then restarted

also not having a giant like f2pool to mine 99% of our blocks just adds even more randomness to the mix.

I think this is the main issue, or better there is low mining power and sometimes someone turn on for a bit his horses and BUM...

Two options come to mind for me:
  • Use a more responsive diff retargeting algorithm
  • Add more algorithms (like Myriadcoin uses five hashing algorithms, each with a five minute target, so averages out to one minute blocks; myriad also disallows a single algo from finding more than two or three blocks in a row I think)
Or convince f2pool to come back and mine both algos again.

1374  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] AEON 2nd gen cryptonote, anon, mobile-friendly, scalable, pruning on: January 19, 2017, 05:14:49 PM
Can someone please launch a MyAeon webwallet so I don't have to download the whole friggin blockchain? Hint hint Smooth hint hint. I've given up on the multicurrency wallets ever adopting Aeon. Don't know why but none of them have integrated Aeon. I haven't found a pool that allows mining Aeon direct to an exchange. So where does that leave me? Sadly, mining Aeon on Minergate's pool with Linux is my best option at this time and that kind of sux because I don't really trust Minergate.  Angry

Coinomi has a pretty good basic Android wallet that works very fast. It takes 2 weeks to integrate, and costs ~2500 upfront for 2 yrs hosting/implement. AEON would be the 1st Cryptonote in the wallet.. so not sure if they can do in 2 weeks...

https://coinomi.com/#supported-coins

Maybe we should think about crowdfunding this? What do you folks think?

I think it would be better to just have someone run a public node that people could use to sync wallets without running the daemon. That would cost ~$50/year I think. Also, thanks jaystone777 Cheesy

@jwinterm, what is the recommended security precautions to take when running a node like this (or on a physical server)? Does AWS provide enough data backups that being hacked is irrelevant?

Thanks

AWS only does backups if you tell it to, but if you're only going to use the server as a public node, I don't think security is all that important, since there would be no funds or anything to lose if it did go down.
1375  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [XMY] Myriad 0.11.3.1 | Upgrade | 1st Multi-Algo | New algo (yescrypt) on: January 19, 2017, 05:14:25 AM
poloniex should change ticket from MYR to XMY

Why do change the MYR symbol, i think MYR is nice than XMY. Lol

MYR is the official ticker for the Malaysian Ringgit, so Bitsquare didn't like Myriadcoin using it, so that kind of spawned the change to XMY.
1376  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [XMY] Myriad 0.11.3.1 | Upgrade | 1st Multi-Algo | New algo (yescrypt) on: January 18, 2017, 05:31:24 PM
Monero has its own pairings on poloniex because they were the first exchange to list cryptonotes besides thekozitwo's short lived exchange, and the volume that Monero and Bytecoin provided allowed poloniex to quickly repay its debts from getting hacked earlier in 2014. I think Monero has more than one early Bitcoin adopter supporting it, but if you look at the funding attempts on the forum you can see that the efforts are supported by many people.

Anyway, sorry for off topic banter. Happy that myriad is still trading on polo, though not that polo and bittrex are still using old ticker. Also nice to see that if someone wanted to grab a few BTC worth, than myriad will have higher per coin price than dgb Smiley

I can't answer it, but I would love to see that question posted on /r/monero

By all means, go ahead and cross post it - I'm not signed up over there yet

Even better post on monero.stackexchange.com

Guys. Quote spam. It's a thing. Stop it.

Also, wtf are you talking about XMR has millions in funding? Afaik every Monero project besides working on core code (and some of that too) gets crowdfunded through the forum website:

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. AWS is a VPS service, so you don't need any physical resources in that sense, Amazon runs the computer for you. If you're running a micro instance, then decide you need more CPU or RAM or whatever, then you can make an image of that instance, then start a more powerful instance using that image. RAM or CPU cores are not dynamically scalable on a running instance tho, afaik.

That's very interesting... Thank you for the info. So what if you don't know or incorrectly estimate your RAM/CPU needs when you create an image? It will alert you when performance/memory becomes a problem? Or just won't execute or both?

Mostly just won't execute, I would say (or compile).
1380  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [Poll] Do you feel part of a crypto community ? on: January 17, 2017, 07:38:48 PM
That's pretty much what I said, right? Anyway, thanks for refreshing.

No problem and thanks for confirming you personally dont view Monero having a community.
I assume you choose the "No" option then ?

I didn't vote, seems a bit ambiguous imo, but sure, I'll cast a no vote now.
