Make up your mind...

Maybe it's time to think about moving the forum to a friendlier zone until the new limitations come.

To be honest, I expected this to happen when discussions about the mixer ban started.
Not really into forum politics but I do know there's a lot of BTC in forum reserves and this seemed like a perfect opportunity to use it for the betterment of the forum in general.

I still hope some of the senior members will step up soon, theymos included. There are a lot of smart heads here and surely there's a better option available.

The forum reserves should be good enough to buy an island.

Maybe it is time to start our own republic somewhere in the ocean.

That way we can tell the US to gf himself.

Umm... What else do we need? Interwebz, raspberry pi, an admin...

3 amp adapter? (I heard 2A ain't cutting it anymore)

Firstly, I have doubts that a raspberry can handle the amount of data that is processed on a site like Bitcointalk.
Second, you need to have a dedicated circuit or dedicated IP.
Third, you needed to have a stable enough internet connection to ensure that the site is always online.

Among other things. See some photos of server locations to get some ideas of what a site like this involves.

So you are saying this server would fail?

I am not sure mate. I think this set up looks pretty capable but I ain't no expert on serverz and shiet. I only know B1 level Javascript and some A2 level node.js.

This is going to work on solar too. A 100w fold-able panel will keep this baby up for a loong time.

enough from me, i'm leaving this topic
When FTTH becomes the norm (2030+), I think it would be viable to consider home hosting or maybe even a decentralized forum. How big is the forum database?

There are plans to provide up to 10 Gbps symmetric... copper/xDSL ain't gonna cut it (there's G.Fast, but it's considered energy-intensive compared to pure fiber).

What if an AI entity decides to start mining BTC? What is the IRS gonna do? Huh

They are going to ask to change the algo of such AIs or charge the owner of these entities with a crime.

Or are you referring to AIs with human rights?  Grin
I'm talking about an autonomous AI/robot that decides independently it's worth mining BTC.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this doesn't go against the 3 Laws of Robotics. Wink

This is bound to happen within the next 10-20 years...

Hopefully USA will be humbled by then.

I suggest that Bitcointalk ban all Defi platforms as soon as possible, and wordfilter their domains, why wait for a verdict and risk the forum being identified as a place where such services are desirable?

I hope you are just being sarcastic because if we keep going on this trajectory and the agencies ban even more stuff then soon we will have no crypto companies or services allowed on Bitcointalk.
Sooner or later, I expect Bitcointalk to become an onion site... no more clearnet access!

DeFi was supposed to stand for "Decentralized Finance". If they can be shut down, they're not decentralized and don't deserve to use that name.
Mining is also supposed to be decentralized and yet, we see people closing down their farms...

They can’t shut the platform down however they can always catch its devs and punish them. If btc becomes a problem in the future, that’s exactly what they will do to btc. (The other possibility is that they already have the btc devs on their payroll, which is not a small possibility imo)

When you connect to the internet make commits, push code to git, promote your service etc it is damn hard to stay anonymous for a long time. maybe you can stay anonymous against average people but we are talking about the gubbermints which own all the infrastructure. If they wanted to know who you are, they will know it and that’s all they need.
You're probably talking about GitHub which is centralized and owned by Microsoft.

How did Satoshi commit code during the first years? When did they start using GitHub?

Although I suppose taking down Bitcoin from GitHub could be considered a violation of free speech... perhaps...

I remember something similar about cryptography not allowed to be exported from the US back in the late 90s (Gene Hoffman had wrote a story about it). He found a clever workaround:

What do you mean by that?

I remember years ago there was an EU project to require every user to identify themselves to access online social networks that could include forums, and theymos said something like that he was not going to pay any attention if a "Bolshevik" EU requirement came for that.
You mean this statement: I intend to ignore all stupidity coming out of the EUSSR?

Quote
In view of what's happened recently, I am not so sure what he would do now if such a requirement came, especially from the USA.
You can't really expect theymos to break the law. This comes to mind:
Maybe Bitcoin will be banned in the US someday, and then I'll have to either shut down bitcointalk.org or find a way of moving it to some remaining territory of freedom in the world. That's the problem with centralized forums. I wish that more work was being done on creating decentralized, uncensorable, but also usable forums. I would love nothing more than to be able to shut down bitcointalk.org due to some decentralized solution making it obsolete. Find me a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working on this, and I'll donate to it.

it is federal law and is a felony to receive 10000 usd worth of any crypto without reporting full kyc to the feds.
That sounds like an impossible law to follow. You have a Bitcoin address in your profile. Anyone can send you $15000, and you'll have no way to find out who it was. Then what? It's the digital equivalent of throwing a pile of money in the mailbox of a random house.

yep and you have two weeks to fill out the form and send it in to the IRS.

If you do not do it you did a felony. If you report the funds and list the sender as unknown no one know what will happen.

Here is a pool

https://pool.laurentiapool.org/#/miners

I mine here but I know he is usa based and I have pruchased 100000 worth of gear from him. So I point a miner there as I will be able to do a proper form.

here is or was my main pool

https://www.viabtc.com/

I shut my mining down because I am not sure how to comply with the law if I mine 20k a month and split 4 ways with my partners.

I don't know if viabtc will give me all the info I need to comply.

So I turned off 150000 usd in gear and I am selling it on eBay piece by piece.

The law is fucked up.

I no longer mine here

https://solo.ckpool.org

as I may not be able to comply if I hit a block.
So Satoshi is a criminal for hitting multiple 50 BTC blocks and not submitting KYC... Roll Eyes

The most ironic fact here is that the state indirectly admits that BTC has some (inherent) value.

10k worth of BTC isn't worth... zero, as no-coiners would love you to believe (reminds me of "The Fox and the Grapes" by Aesop). Cheesy

Deep inside their (depressed?) soul they know BTC is worth a lot...  Wink the market has put a price on it, even if it fluctuates on a daily basis.

During patriotic holidays, the news media applaud the Founding Fathers. But rarely does anyone mention some important facts about them: that they were smugglers, tax evaders, and traitors.

The Revolution is often said to have begun in 1775 at the Battle of Lexgton. In truth, it began in the 16th century when the first colonists began traveling to the New World.

Many of these tiny, primitive vessels went down, yet as the years passed, more and more colonists risked their lives to make the journey.

Why? What in Europe could have been so horrible that rational people would risk their lives and their children's lives to escape it?

Socialism. It wasn't called socialism in those days, but that is what it was—unlimited government control and taxation of everything and everybody. There were no free markets and no free enterprise. Regardless of how honest or hard working a person was, it did him little good unless he was in bed with the government.

Where are we running to next? Another planet?

Elon???

No, nowhere to run this time. Either there will be a huge civil war and people who demand freedom will fuck these retards up or… we will suck it up like we have always been doing for the last 100 years
Australia was also founded by criminals and convicts! Iceland too by Norwegian murderers. Grin

I guess the only continent left to colonize is Antarctica (assuming the ice cap melts)...

Regarding revolutions, they're a product of "toxic masculinity" and testosterone levels have fallen quite a bit during the last 100 years. Wink
153  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [GUIDE] Best Crypto Investment Opportunities for Passive Income -2024 on: April 14, 2024, 08:52:22 PM
I don't believe we should have a fiat mindset when it comes to Bitcoin (or any other deflationary currency/asset).

People expect to get 4% interest rate from a bank, because the central bank prints more money out of thin air if you "stake" your fiat money for 1 year.

Where does that 4% come from? BTC currently has an annual 1.8% inflation rate that is expected to be cut in half in 1 week.

Not to mention that there is no a central entity (central bank) that prints new Bitcoins, but various competing entities (mining pools).

Having a track record of 10+ years doesn't tell me much... what will happen if everyone tries to withdraw their money from freebitcoin? (bank run scenario)

In fiat/commercial banks we know there's the lender of last resort. They will print money out of thin air (ECB/100k, FED/250k per depositor) to bail you out (which will of course increase inflation).

I think most of these services are elaborate Ponzi schemes. It's all fine and dandy if they don't experience mass withdrawals.

I'd be very careful and wary with "Bitcoin banks"... especially if they haven't published Proof of Reserves.

Εσάς αν σας έλεγε κάποιος ότι θα χάνατε την δουλειά σας και τον υψηλό μισθό σας με όσα έρχονται, δεν θα τον πολεμούσατε μέχρι θανάτου;

@theymos I think that if Jambler partners are the ones who receive deposits and withdrawals, bear full responsibility for clients’ funds, and Jambler is the one who provides liquidity and technical support, then it should be allowed. What do you think?

Jambler provides a privacy feature and there are not many privacy services that are advertised here with high-quality posters, so giving them another chance will be beneficial for all.

In addition to above, theymos, isn't the initial purpose of banning mixers to protect the forum from goverments persistent prolific attempt to shut down money laundering activity? Thus, it can be derived that mixers banning are due to their close relationship with ML and other criminal uses.

On this case, Jambler actually do the exact opposite of mixers in the sense of laundering money; receiving tainted money and sending them all clean and shiny. Jambler do a Blockchain check prior to accepting transaction. When the result come negative, they reject the transaction and return the fund to the originating address, ultimately fighting against money laundering.

So Jambler uses AML/chain analysis and buys the concept of "tainted" BTC... interesting.

To me it seems like an ESG project, so perhaps it could have some future on the way to Net Zero...

Don't think of it in strictly capitalist terms (banning cars and promoting bicycles doesn't make much financial sense either).

There's a huge ecological agenda going on right now. It is what it is.

I'm a big fan of biology/nature. I think Softwar makes some good points.

Bitcoin has a lot in common with nature's laws:

https://brandonquittem.com/bitcoin-is-a-pioneer-species/

Summer = bull run = even weak animals can survive

Winter = bear market = weak animals get decimated (weak hands, altcoins, Ponzi exchanges)

With limited resources (QT, 5.5% by FED) only the strong survives, but with abundance (QE, 0%) even the weak survives. You can't go wrong with this pattern, happens everytime.

Bonus read (from the same author):

https://brandonquittem.com/bitcoin-rhythms-of-history/

Maybe someday when the digital world has consumed us, this can happen.
Yes, I reckon it will happen during the Metaverse era.

So, 2020 we had the Covid black swan before the bull run. Now it looks like the WW3 black swan.
I didn't sweat during COVID (still have a Discord screenshot from March 2020 where I had suggested this would be the last opportunity for the middle class to acquire a whole coin at 4-5k)... nobody believed me back then.

And I'm definitely not sweating right now either. Another excellent buying opportunity.
