1401  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [∞ YH] solo.ckpool.org 1% fee solo mining USA/DE 238 blocks solved! on: September 20, 2017, 10:38:12 PM
There was a problem at the pool end causing some unexpected down time. The pool has been restarted, apologies about the inconvenience. There's a minor issue with it at the moment and I'll be watching it carefully. It will likely need a planned restart tomorrow for updates.
1402  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [BLOCK PARTY] ckpool.org ZERO FEE SPLNS no registration mining pool on: September 18, 2017, 10:28:38 PM
The party started yet or are we still waiting for guests to show up?
Party's already underway and more guests are always welcome. The more the merrier the party.

Hashrate looks to have doubled on the pool. Woot!
We definitely have a bit more hashrate, but the doubling unfortunately appeared to be transient rentals again. It looks more like 850TH now. Still very small but as always good things come to those who wait.
1403  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New Miner here... Did I forgot something ? on: September 18, 2017, 02:46:33 AM
Ok I was wrong you are on the wrong track
Very wrong indeed.

OP yes you forgot something: you forgot to check whether bitcoin mining can be done with GPU today; it cannot meaningfully be mined without an ASIC miner.
1404  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Pirate Bay a Phising site? For mining? on: September 18, 2017, 02:44:44 AM
Mining monero with CPU has nothing to do with bitcoin mining, but then, you're frequenting an illegal website for you to do illegal downloads of pirated material; why are you so outraged they're doing something immoral on top of that?

And why it still uses berkley db 4.8? Wouldnt it be more suitable to opt for newer versions of db
New versions of BDB are backwards incompatible so you cannot downgrade your wallet if you wanted to (this happens with BDB minor versions too) and that is a bit of a usability problem. Also, newer versions of BDB have licenses incompatible with Bitcoin Core's license.
Here's a question: Are BDB forwards compatible? If I force a build with-incompatible-bdb and it's a newer version than what the existing wallet has, will that be able to read and work with the existing wallet? Will bdb keep using the old format on disk or upgrade the database?

I'll be restarting the pool shortly for the bitcoind upgrade and post when it's complete. There should be minimal pool downtime.
Restart complete uneventfully in preparation for the bitcoind upgrade which should happen without affecting miners.

All pool restarts were completed yesterday and the customised bitcoin daemons were all updated seamlessly. https://poolbench.antminer.link/ confirms ckpools are still the fastest updating full validating pools. To perform any better on that benchmark we'd have to be the ones finding blocks, so let's all find some blocks shall we?

I'll be restarting the main pool shortly as planned. All going well there should actually be minimal interruption to mining.
The restarts are finally complete. It took a little while longer than planned. Sorry about the inconvenience.

I'll be updating the bitcoin daemon later but that shouldn't affect the pool at all now that everything's in place.

I'll be restarting the de pool shortly. Downtime should be minimal.

Hello,

Complete noob, just got an X3 Prospero with lcd, and wanted to try my luck with solo mining. I'm just not sure how to set up my rig, the lcd has built in mining software and three options when setting up pool: Pool, Worker, Password. Would I have to set my Pool as "  stratum+tcp://solo.ckpool.org:3333/1whatevermybtcaddressis" Worker as "randomname", and Password as "mypreference" or do i need cgminer and just configure it through terminal? Thanks in advance.
Pool as "solo.ckpool.org:3333"
worker as "1whatevermybtcaddressis"
password as anything

Do you have a date or time in mind that you will start the update just so I can make the person who is watching my miners dose not freakout when they start beeping at him
Hopefully in about 2 hours from now.

Oh well looks like its a 3am wake up for him then.. haha... Beeep... Beeep... Beeeeeeep..

Will this reset my bestshare?

"bestshare": 1202963229.359168,
No it should not, unless we find a block in the meantime.

As per the solo pool, I will be updating the pool's bitcoin daemon to 0.15 based code soon. Unfortunately this is quite a substantial update that updates the UTXO database on moving from 0.14 which incurs some downtime for the bitcoin daemon. I will be setting up a failover bitcoind to handle the downtime of the bitcoin daemon but in the process I will need to restart the pool. The downtime of the actual pool should be minimal.

in worker i should put my btc address right?
and password can be anything

thanks again
Yes that's correct.
1415  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Japanese company GMO announcing new hardware and mining operation on: September 13, 2017, 12:57:01 PM
Ah ... this really belongs in Speculation along with the 7nm thread... If anyone else posted it here it would be moved to there,,,

Considering that the 7nm node requires using EUV and those light sources are just now starting to reach useful powers - not going to happen in their time frame. Remember, AMD and Nvidia both announced Production with a big 'P' of 16nm GPU's in mid-2015 - when did they actually start full production? Early 2016 and that was from a node size using fairly mature lithography process. EUV is a whole 'nother ballgame...
It would have been borderline in my eyes too except that this is an announcement from a well established company (been around 20 years) rather than people speculating on who or what might come out with 7nm. I've simply translated what the company has announced.
1416  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Japanese company GMO announcing new hardware and mining operation on: September 13, 2017, 11:53:57 AM
Some of you may have read the announcement about a Japanese company getting into mining. At this stage they're just announcing their plans and have started posting what they expect from their hardware. The details are in Japanese which fortunately I can read.

https://twitter.com/AkioHoshi/status/907849396779470848

Beginning with mining hardware. The chip will be developed and manufactured domestically. Each module will be 10TH/s. 48 volts DC. Each system board has 8 modules. Each blade has 2 boards. Each rack takes 8 blades coming to 1.25PH. The Data centre will be 16x35m floor space housing 500PH/S.

Of more interest is their hardware description:
https://www.gmo.jp/news/article/?id=5775

ハードウェア
計算性能 10TH/s
消費電力 500W以下
投入マイニングチップ:50,000チップから段階的に増強

設備   ラック、冷房、配電、消防、セキュリティ

電力   再生可能エネルギー(地熱、水力)

Hardware:
Estimated capability: 10TH/S
Electricity consumption: <500W

Mining chip manufacturing: Stepwise increase to 50,000 chips.

Facilities: Racks, cooling, electricity distribution, fire extinguishers, security.

Electric power: Renewable energy (geothermal, hydroelectric.)

Probably the most interesting aspect is 10TH/s for 500W which would make it class leading efficiency. The website also says they'll be using 7nm technology...

Of course we've heard of great claims of efficiency in hardware from newcomers in the past who have failed to deliver on their promises so at this stage it needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

今後の展開(時期未定)
Future plans (timeframe to be determined)

(1) クラウドマイニング事業
1. Cloud mining operation

Explains cloud mining much like any other operation that they'll be selling.

(2) 次世代マイニングボードの販売
2. Next  generation mining board sales

Public sales of their hardware!

(3) GMOコイン株式会社への仮想通貨供給
3. Provision of virtual currency to the GMO Coin public company

This appears to be them starting a cryptocurrency exchange under a daughter company to their main one.

TL;DR This established Japanese company is getting into bitcoin mining hardware and is aiming to make class beating efficiency mining hardware that it will eventually be selling to the public, timeframe unknown...

The bitcoin mining world desperately needs something to break the bitmain stranglehold on the global hashrate. Hopefully this is the beginning of something that other companies will do too. This is no new company formed just the mine bitcoin, but then bitmain has been working with mining for a long time now and understands it a lot better than the newcomers. It will be interesting to see if that existing knowhow counts for more than what established companies have to back them.
1417  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Free Mining Websites on: September 13, 2017, 06:14:49 AM
Sure there are plenty of free websites out there designed to give you free money for nothing...

Think about it...

thank you, i assure myfreewallet is suffice?
I've never heard of it which is a real concern. Don't use anything that doesn't have a reputation out there. Do some research, consider things like electrum, mycellium, greenaddress, exodus for software wallets and trezor and ledger nano for hardware wallets etc...
1419  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [∞ YH] solo.ckpool.org 1% fee solo mining USA/DE 238 blocks solved! on: September 12, 2017, 11:56:04 PM
sorry i havent made myself very clear, i know to use my btc address as my username.
the question i was asking is should i point my miners to here:
 stratum+tcp://solo.ckpool.org:3333

do i have to download the blockchain? i thought this pool meant u didnt have to download it?
Yes point to that address and no, you do not need to download the blockchain, but you do need to have a wallet of some kind (obviously.)
1420  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Are ASICs the only profitable way to mine bitcoins? on: September 12, 2017, 08:06:04 AM
Is it ever possible to be profitable with GPUs?
If the GPUs are free and the electricity is free... even then you can't even earn small change with a year of mining with the highest end GPU.
