@casascius, of course you are correct here. It's amazing how many ridiculous misconceptions about law most people have and how sure are they about own infallibility.

Note to self: never ever talk about law on forums (except consumeractiongroup.co.uk and likes), wrestling with pigs is not a good idea.

Irreversible transactions do not make honour, ethic and law irrelevant.
I agree sir. With the numerous scams and claims occuring these days, I propose we set up a sortof "BitCourt" where these cases can be heard... the judges could be trusted members of the community who are elected every few years or so, that way if there is any corruption the MARKET will move to eliminate it. The bitcoin client will have to be modified to enforce their decisions, but this is a small price to pay to ensure that values like honour and integrity are upheld and our currency flourishes.

It is not going to work. And I personally will be against any modifications of fundamentals of the Bitcoin protocol, as surely will be all/most others with enough hashing power to matter.

Some mediation service could be viable eventually, but both parties would have to agree to use those...

Just be careful who you do business with.

In this economy that we are in now i dont see how anyone can argue ethics here at all.

No doubts! It seems that most of population here does not even know what ethic is, let alone at least trying to act ethically, not even at least sometimes.

If the guy who refused to return these 501 coins is in UK, than this is a simple civil matter, can be easily and relatively quickly sorted using small court procedure.

It is of of course not clear if money can be recovered in the end, the dude could plead poverty and pay 1£ a month until end of days, for example, etc...

But anyway we know too little to speculate beyond this.

Miner's axiom number 2: do not deal with anonymous parties.

Legacy? You must be kidding!

Do newborn babies have legacies?

If you know his name and address, this is small claims court time. If not, you can only blame yourself than and move on.

1431  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Custom FPGA Mining Board: X6000/X6500 on: September 02, 2011, 03:39:35 PM
picocomputing.com and their ilk are feasting on governmental, spooky, military and bank funded customers, who do not count every penny, since it is all paid by tax payers one way or another.

I doubt that those providers ever will get prices to a reasonable level for competitive bitcoin mining market.  If they would want to get into this market, their margins will have to shrink significantly.

1432  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Custom FPGA Mining Board: X6000/X6500 on: September 02, 2011, 02:59:33 PM
Hi guys,

did someone look at this site: http://www.picocomputing.com ?

Could they have something that helps producing faster/cheaper boards?

Cheers.

spiccioli.

I had a chat with them in 2010 before I went GPU route. Their prices were not competitive comparing to GPU's. I doubt they are any better now and surely not any better than home-grown variety of FPGA boards developed by Bitcoin community recently.

Though of course maybe they quoted me a silly price first. Not the price they really ready to take. All this marketing BS such people play all the time.

1433  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: [EXPERIMENTAL] poclbm-autohop: Yet Another Automatic Pool Hopper on: September 02, 2011, 10:54:08 AM
Motivation

Many mining pools are still using the inherently unfair proportional payout system. My primary intent is to encourage pool operators to migrate their pools to fair systems. It seems as if the only way this will happen is if miners themselves see that the proportional system is unfair. (Unfortunately, the fair systems often seem unfair at first glance, making explanations more difficult.)

Good idea. The more the merrier. In all seriousness.

1434  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin official sites? why on separate domains? on: September 02, 2011, 08:39:26 AM
Vlad, I hope you have had some SEO's on top of hitting your forums for the keyword "Bitcoin Forums"

Also, I think this page https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin_Forum should be edited to reflect changes in having a page with the word "The" and "Bitcoin Forum" .. maybe now "The First Bitcoin Forum"

I have a super pro SEO man appointed to have a look into this matter soon, with a modest budget so far. https://bitcoin.org.uk/forums has moved from 10th page a week ago to 2-5 spot on google depending on country. It is not easy to dislodge such behemoth as bitcointalk from the first spot. It will take some time and money.

On bing (for UK), we are in the first spot for "bitcoin forums" already. Though, it is not that important really.

The only official thing in Bitcoin is 51% of hashing power.

1439  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Why would you mine with anything BUT a PPS pool? on: September 01, 2011, 03:17:57 PM
I have observed that to some noticeable degree people with double digit gigahashes being let's say "smart gigahashes" and exhibiting more rational behaviour than, say, majority of "sub gigahash" miners.

Suppose, once one has more or less serious operation going, one has to start calculating yield and fighting for every extra percent of it. As opposed to "lets set it mining while I am not gaming" crowd.

Shrinking margins surely will push evolution forward big time as well.

1440  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ARTICLE] Bitcoin To Collapse? on: September 01, 2011, 01:28:41 PM
@Blitzboom, not arguing with you on above. mybitcoin and other ewallets even given all the risks were and still are potentially viable solution, for small amounts and quick in and out transactions.

When you trust them small amount for short time the risk is small. It is people who stored there semi permanently thousands or even hundreds of bitcoin are those who need to have a sanity check.
