So, I tested positive for COVID-19.

Good times.

Feels like I've been absolutely smeared by an 18 wheeler.

Have not ever experienced cold or flu symptoms this harsh before.

I'll recover fine. No respiratory congestion at all so far, but Rick said his congestion started on day 3 of the infection, so, we'll see how things go. However, I think Rick did himself no favors with his infection, and ended up contracting secondary conditions because he was working, and not resting.

Thank you, China.

Assholes.

At least we'll both have natural immunity after I recover, so that's nice.

Bed-rest for me for at least the next week.

Have a great Sunday, friends.

take your vitamin  c + plenty of sunshine !

What a trip.  I heard him speak for a whole 30 seconds before I knew he was from my neck of the woods.  I do not sound like him, by the way... but most of my people do.  I like that dude.  First gemblitz post that didn't just waste my time... huh.  It might actually be the end of the world.  weeeeeeeee.

Hi, guys! have you seen the network hashrate?  Shocked 3.17GH/s What do you think is it? Asic's again? Botnet?

It does not look like anything way out of the ordinary... a little boost so far.  Could be someone decided to spin up some cloud mining or something...  If it were ASICS we would should expect much bigger jumps...

@cAPSLOCK I have several/many stories about analog synths and myself. Nothing famous, nor large. Yet I refrain because of OpSec. I've been online a long time, I am trying to keep these stories, each into their own world.

A good one I can relate, I went to NAMM (the music hardware exposition on the left coast of the USA, not VietNam). I had the pleasure of meeting Craig Anderton (perform your own search here). I was able to convey some of my work, it was a fun thing. He is a music guy that has done great work in recent decades, yet not a serious/famous performer.

Then later, we smoked some crack, and shared our favorite Linkin Park videos.

Our paths overlap a little then! I have been to Namm a few times as well.  And of course I know of Anderton... a great educator and authority in the whole digital music realm!

I've never tried crack though.

I actually have an old relationship with the Cakewalk company (gone now).  I contributed to their Sonar product back in the day. I don't suppose this will be too much to share... but I will not get any more specific here lol. I do not know if the current (free) version of the product still has my contribution in it or not... hmm...

Bitcoin over 50k and the WO talking exotic MIDI theory... lol.  So awesome.

I met an adjunct professor in the cafeteria completely randomly.  He was not currently teaching, but he had a love for electronic music and prog rock which I also liked.  His name was Bob.  We become fast friends, and would meet for lunch often over the next several weeks.  He liked to talk about what I wanted to do with music, and he also told me lots about some of the crazy projects he was doing.  At the time he was working out the idea for a Theramin ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin ).  He was wanting to build one that sent MIDI.  I told him I thought this was super cool, and that I would want one myself, but that I thought it would be a niche instrument at best.

From what little I know about MIDI, it's not really suitable for such a task.

It can handle it... I think it would just send CC data like crazy on probably 2 axis.

But it's funny.  That day that I figured out who he was that was alike the second thought I had.  And this legendary genius want's to build WHAT?!?!  Maybe you only get so many world changing ideas to keep it fair.  That said.  they still sell those things.. the newest iteration has "pitch correction"!

Just checked on the fees that I would need to pay to convert one of my shitcoins into USDT via DeFi and it comes to about $600. For $5000 worth of coins.

We are certainly not at the future of DeFi yet.

The RGB solution coming down the pike would be over the Lightning Network and cost almost nothing using client side validation. That is the future of DeFi.

YUCK!  Where was that?  I have used Sideswap, and i do not *think* their fees are quite that bad, but maybe so.

*edit* Oh, I see... "DeFi".  Maybe I am missing the point, but nothing seems more middle of the bellcurve than "DeFi". I always get an image in my mind of Laura Shin talking about it like it's changing the world.  But I admit my thoughts are based in ignorance.  I've not done much with it, other than try to set up a Monero swap.

From the time Music was Music and called the Real shit

"Real Shit"? I think it's safe to say you are very young, I have a pretty good idea about many, many varied types of music. I have been playing "Real Instruments" longer than you have been alive. And they pay me to do so.

moog? extra credit if you built it yourself.

or a cigar box guitar maybe, same bonus applies

either way beats me, i "play" bass, uke, and harp. if you can call it "playing".. cats hide when i go near my instruments. come to think of it so does my wife. but with her playing her violin and flute, they come sit and listen. me? they hide for days

OK.  I do not usually tell this story publicaly...  but whatevs...  Also bad opsec... also whatevs...

Back in the 80s I went to college in the mountains of NC as a Music/Audio engineering double major.

I will never forget the look on his face at this one moment in our friendship there at the lunch table one day.  A knowing smile came over him as well as an obvious look of disappointment.  Because he had just seen my jaw hang open and my eyes get as wide as saucers when I realized who he was.

"You just figured out my last name didn't you Xxxxx (My first name)?", Bob asked me.

"I think so", I replied.

"Well, you're right... but hopefully we can continue this friendship the same even now that you know... and I want you to continue to be as honest as you were before about my ideas!  I was quite enjoying getting to know you without you knowing my last name.  It makes relationships hard with like minded folks".

We did remain friends, but I think it was hard for it not to affect me that I was hanging out with Robert Moog, the inventor of the first synthesizer you could buy, and such a tremendous influence on electronic music.

I never kept up with Bob well after I left school which is typical of me, and I was DEVASTATED when I learned he had brain cancer some 20ish years later.  What an irony that someone with such an amazing mind died because if a disease in it.  He did go on to invent the Moog Etherwave which was, as I had predicted, a bit of a niche product.

That is my own Minimoog (with my new Blockstream Jade sitting atop it!).  I bought it from a guy for $100.  He did not know what he was selling.  I sort of felt guilty.  I will never sell it though even though it's worth quite a bit more than $100.  It needs an overhaul, and I am about to get the capaciters needed to get it back to tip top shape.  You guys have all heard this thing... it's all over pop music from the 70s to today.  Particularly used for big ass bass sounds.

Here's to Bob...

Something is wrong with that image, no?

It has the same statement on both the right and the left side of the bell curve.

The statement on the left (lower) side needs to be changed, no?  The statement on the right  (higher) side is o.k.. , no?

You get the whole point of the meme, right?  That the edges of the bellcurve are ironically both saying the exact same thing, and are ironically correct, while the great masses miss the biggest opportunity of their lives?

To me it's one of the truest of bitcoin memes.  The point is the masses are missing it.

To be honest a wise man said it to another man in a vision 2000 years ago basically:

Quote
I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.  I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

Hello friends.

jojo shot me a message, and figured I'd pop in to say "Hi!" and "Miss you too jojo!"

Real life is keeping us super busy lately with everything we have going on with the Ranch build. Should start laying in roads within the next two weeks, and recognized we're going to need to MOVE A FREAKING POND to deal with some erosion issues and build up a portion of a neighbors eroded property, so, it's become a bigger project than initially anticipated, after all the analysis was done. Flooding can be a problem out there in some low-laying parts and the pond overflowing was also causing additional erosion issues. Our main homestead is on higher ground that is not affected.

Slow going on the legal challenge with enclosing a fence. It's meticulous work that we need to do with survey companies and court records, so everything will be ironclad in court protecting our claim. We're effectively "doing their homework for them", and going to shove it in their lawyers face, at what a bunch of absolute fuck-ups their clients are.

Rick is retiring on Tuesday.

Also, don't forget to smash buy some corn on September 7th, in solidarity with El Salvador!

Peace, love, and all that other nohomo stuff. Unless you want homo stuff...

Glad to hear from you sir.  Glad all is well.  You stay in my heart.  I will be right behind Rick, I hope (very NH).  Although I have a new role in my hospital system, and am excited to be doing this job... I might just see how long I can stand it. Wink

Blockstream Jade initial review.

TLDR: Meh+, but will a lot of potential if they choose to really build it out.  For people who want a bitcoin only wallet there is little reason now to get this rather than a Coldcard, or Trezor w/ BTC only firmware.  Really, currently Price is the only advantage.  But in time air-gapped tx signing, and Liquid use may also be a good use. The current BIGGEST omission is no BIP39 passphrease support (!?!??!)

So I am sitting here on a live Arch linux (EndeavorOS) desktop using GParted to move my RaspiBlitz data drive from a 500G SSD to a 1T SSD.  I find myself wishing I had sprung for the 2T SSD because sitting here waiting for the damn data to copy over, while still not knowing if this is going to even work, and knowing I will just have to do it again in a few years?  Well... let's just say hooray small blocks.  And I need something to do in the meantime, so I will write my impressions of the Blockstream Jade hardware wallet.

Size and form factor  8/10
It is pretty close to two Ledgers.  It's the same length and width, but 2x as deep basically.  So it's a decent size. Small but usable.  And does not take up tons of room in your pocket.  It is designed to be used in landscape mode holding it longways like the Ledger. The screen is much bigger though... about the same size as the Trezor's screen, but is also full color, which is unimportant to me, but a nice touch.  It feels decent.  It has (potentially) three controls with 5 switches.  A power button, and rocker dial that can also be depressed, and a main button on the face.  Not sure why they have all these buttons.  They are not using them yet.

Setup 6/10
This was annoying.  I chose to use a private key that I produced with coinflips ($4 worth of quarters x 16 shake/flips) and a python script I wrote to convert this to the 24 word mnemonic. When you first turn it on it wants to either produce a seed phrase (probably the better choice) or "restore" one.  I chose the latter and took the time to input it.  The method is reasonable and works fairly well.  You enter the 24 words in using the rocker and main button and the alphabet laid out A-Z on the screen.  It eliminates the letters you do not need based on what you have entered so far, and also presents you with a word list once there are as many of those as remaining letters (or less).  This process is decent on this device, aside from the fact I found the rocker switch to be a little fiddly.  Sometimes I had to rock it a couple times to get it to respond.  That made the process annoying slightly.

Then once I had entered in ALL TWENTYFOUR WORDS it asked to be plugged into a device that had GREEN installed.  I chose to be troublesome and plugged it into my phone. Wink  It WORKED!

But... Sad

It then decided to update the firmware... and guess what... after updating the firmware it restarted and was blank again! *Sigh* OK AGAIN with the 24 words and the fiddly rocker switch.

On the second try the device froze during the entry of word 17.  I waited.  I hoped. I said a little prayer.  I said "whassa whassa whassssup"?  I told it I thought Adam Back is Satoshi.  But I don't think that, and I guess it knew because in the end I just had to hold the power button down and START ALL OVER AGAIN.  FUCK.

On the third try I finally got the seed in again and connected it to my phone with a USB cable (Not the one that came with it which is a USB A to USB C cable as you would expect... but I have a C->C cable and used that... worked fine).  Thank GOD.

Use with phone 6/10
: Then I was able to get Green loaded on my phone and it saw the device.  But it was very spotty working with Green on the phone.  It crashed a few times, and the connection was not always working.  But when it DID work it seemed solid. I went into both BTC and L-BTC wallets and did some transactions. I may regret the BTC transaction of ~50k sats since fees might go too high to use that in the future. I might wait for a lull to send them back.  Green is decent, but it's a little unituative switching back and forth between liquid and bitcoin wallets.

Use with Computer TBD : When I have some time after I upgrade this SDD I will review this part.  Hopefully it's a little stronger.

Bluetooth 6/10
:  I found this to be very spotty.  Most times it would not connect. But once it did it kept the connection and worked well.  But is this a security risk?  Thining it through I figure it probably is.  But would require an sophisticated  attacker in fairly close proximity.  And it can be turned off.

Cable connection 9/10:  This worked almost every time but Green did crash once?

PIN 9/10
The device uses a PIN.  It used a 6 character pin like Green does. Other than the slightly fiddly rocker, works fine.

Use with Specter TBD: The only independent wallet that supports it so far that I know of.  I will also review later.

LACK OF BIP39 PASSPHRASE 0/10
: What the ACTUAL feck?  Isn't blockstream founded by an OG Cypherpunk?  Why the HELL would they release this thing without implementing one of the most important developments of BIP39, and for that matter ANY BIP?  I would almost rather have the passphrase but not HD addresses.  At least liquid has confidential transactions.  This is a ridiculous omission.  And if they do not implement it, I will not use this device much at all.  I cannot decide if I would rather a Ledger like implementation ,or a Trezor like one.  But it HAS to happen.

Camera 5/10: This is a great feature. But they have not built this out much yet either.  It allowed me to use the camera for entering the seed words.  And I turned it on.  It produces a fuzzy B/W image on the screen.  We will see how it workd on QR codes in the future.  But Why do THAT first?  I mean, who has a QR of their seed?  Is there a secure way to even produce this without graph paper? Lol.  But eventually being able to use it to scan QR codes should be nice.  We will have to wait and see.

Value 8/10. At ~$36 it's priced well, and is a lot of *potential* for the money.

Overall: 7/10 I am boosting this overall score because I think it feels like a good little piece of gear, and I am hopeful they actually develop out the missing features.  So I am giving them the benefit of the doubt.

If what you want is a decent BTC only H/W wallet then I would go with a ColdCard currently.  But having that plus liquid is a plus.  And hopefully the missing things come along, and they keep developing it to add more features that matter.  We will see.

Bitconnect, finally in the news. Those around in 2017 will remember that lending coin that wrecked many, so to say.

https://beincrypto.com/sec-lawsuit-bitconnect-founder-role-crypto-fraud/

I have to say …. I did love and still sometimes re-watch the Carlos Matos speech

Wasaaa wasaaa wasuuuuuuup bitconeeeeeeeeect

And just the walk …. What a comic fool that was able fooling a full room of people …

I have friends like Carlos.

Super positive... always looking for the next big thing.  Suckers to the hilt. But resilient.  In the end he will have a fulfilling happy life with or without money, but it is more likely to be without, because he does not hold money as much as he just lets it flow through his hands.

He wants to believe in whatever shiny thing has his attention now, and wants YOU to believe it too.  Not so much because you believing it will enrich HIM, but because he truly believes it will enrich you both.

Those bastards standing behind him on that stage are evil motherfuckers who I truly hope are prosecuted and stripped of the gains they got from the good, but foolish souls like Carlos...

-edit- or i dunno... maybe he was the mastermind?

Everybody remembers Laszlo and his 10kBTC pizzas but how about the British dude who paid for them with his credit card and got the coins?

Anyone except Laszlo know his name? Is he still hodling most of those coins?

It takes two to make a deal, a buyer and a seller.

Someone realized early the potential of Bitcoin and put his money there. He deserves equal credit.

No one remembers who the buyer dude was, but I think the coins have been analyzed and it's been dispersed through time and all or most of those 10k coins are now with everyone. Everyone has a taint of it, it just goes back all those blocks ago.

I sure HOPE my coins have some pizza tainted UTXOs in them. Smiley

But I doubt it.  The majority of my UTXOs trace back to 2011-2013.  And though I move them from time to time they have not been mixed in with other coins much... they never spent much time at exchanges for example.

I am definitely a foil to the whole "days destroyed" or firm hands metrics.  For example I moved a lot of coins in to multisig addresses recently... So it looks like old coins moved.  But in reality they didn't move anywhere but to other addresses *I* control.

I will be tempted when Taproot comes all the way in to move all THESE utxos into the newer sorts of addresses then too.  And again they will only be moving technically... with no financial impact other than a few fees.

It was OK. I think many stoners are just really into the stoner lifestyle and stoner movies really, really float their boat.

Yeah... I am definitely not a stoner (in a long long time), but am a fan of the Cohen movies for their subtlety and dry-ish humor.  But I do figure part of the cult status is all about the overall vibe, and the writing and performance of the characters.
