FYI: The humans handling the new account recoveries system which was implemented late last year are a company that Cyrus created called Cryptios. alanst, 3dOOm, and Rizzrack -- the "mysterious newbies" who some people noticed -- are three of their employees.

I believe that alanst is no longer part of Cryptios team. I recently noticed something at his profile, where he states now that he is a "Former member of Cryptios". He also changed his Personal Text, which now states "former Mysterious newbie".

I tried to contact alanst a while ago, but he never replied to my PM.

Having that said, I believe we need an official confirmation on this matter, maybe from theymos or Cyrus.
1664  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BPIP] Bitcointalk Public Information Project [Back in Action] on: March 06, 2023, 09:08:07 PM
I think there are 2 causes:
1. BPIP doesn't update all profiles at the same time, so theymos' DT1-update doesn't instantly reflect in the correct new order.
2. Some people have quite a lot of inclusions, including self-scratching. So their own Trust score changes significantly depending on whether or not they're on DT1.

Scrolling through Most Trusted Profiles, there are many users with the same Trust score as yours. A small change is enough to bump you up or down quite a lot.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I was not aware of how many users have same Trust score... wow!

Howeever, I don't think that was the reason for the change... I will explain:

- last time I posted here it was just after the DT change, when I was dropped to DT2. At that moment, my position on those ladders registered a fluctuation of 100 places (similar to current one)
- since then, my position on those two ladders faced only minor changes
- immediately after lattest DT change, when I returned to DT1, I noticed same huge fluctuation. So I believe that, when I checked my profile on bpip, the DT change was processed already by bpip.

Having these said, I think it would be a very big coincidence to have these huge fluctuations twice already, first time after being dropped from DT1 and second one after returning to DT1... So I believe this is the cause - the change from DT1 to DT2 and from DT2 to DT1 and not the Trust score change of other users having a Trust score close to mine.

I will still keep observing this at each DT change I'll meet, but who knows when I'll go again to DT2... In any case, I will pay attention each month, after DT users are reshuffled and, when I'll go to DT2 I'll come back to confirm if same huge fluctuation occurred. My curiosity was if such a big fluctuation is normal...
1665  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Few Trusted Escrow Providers on: March 06, 2023, 09:01:31 PM
An active/inactive tag would probably be the easier route. What do you think?

Well, I think it's better, for accuracy purposes, to have listed only active users, and those which still offer escrow services. If they are inactive or if they ceased offering the service (such as krogoth or Hhampuz), what's the reason for listing them...? It may only lead to confusion. After all, not all users read Trust pages (especially if they are new on the forum). And listing some which don't offer escrow anymore may lead to have users contacting them asking for escrow, while they are not interested in doing this anymore... (They could also report those PMs as being unsolicited, which may lead to other problems.)

Same is true about inactive ones: some users (which do not read Trust pages) may contact inactive ones and wait, in vain, for them to answer. This may also lead to having deals cancelled and so on...

And, after all, the purpose of this topic was to correct what was inaccurate in the other two topics about escrows... And what was inaccurate there was the fact that they contain obsolete users (inactive or which stopped acting as escrows) and the topic authors are no longer interested in having their topics up to date. Now, since a third topic was created, let's have this one, at least, up to date Smiley

Felicitari pentru initiativa si pentru traducere!

Multumesc frumos!

1667  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Quiz 2022] History of Bitcoin and Bitcointalk 🚩 on: March 04, 2023, 11:19:57 PM
I don't understand why we are getting very good results here but not getting any merit please check my post
Merit earning 101; rule #1: Begging for merits will not earn you merits.
Do you feel entitled to being rewarded by cheating on a for-fun quiz?

Well said, pawel7777! Actually, bot fm went that far that he sent me 3 (unsolicited) PMs asking me for "married gift" -- whatever that meant, as in English it does not mean anything. At lest, anything coherent. He also added the link to his fake post so I understood that he is begging for merits. I reported all his 3 PMs and now I see that his post here is also deleted. Probably someone else reported that fake-post too. This guy was incredibile!

Just Quote for image visible.
But your image can't visible here.

The image doesn't show because it does not respect the image posting rule. He wrote the imgur link, but not the link leading to the pic itself -- the one ending in ".jpg". His link should have had this form, in order to be shown:

Code:
https://i.imgur.com/some-characters-here.jpg

I any case, it's not worth the effort to quote these fake-posts for showing the full images. It's clear that they are fake-posts.

In fact freshers can score well with multiple attempts. But maximum five to six correct answers can be given in the first attempt.

See? You said it too. It's okay to quote the post of a "normal" Newbie user, which comes up with a "normal" score. As a plus, you can also look at his posting history and see if he is a shitposter or a normal forum contributor. If he seems okay you can quote his score for having it shown as full image but, otherwise, I'd suggest you to not quote all the other fake-posts as it's useless...
1668  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I want to surprise a friend on: March 04, 2023, 11:02:16 PM
Is Bitcoin a perfect birthday present for a 25 years old college student? I want to surprise a friend, he is facing a lot of challenges due to his studies and he likes Bitcoin but can't afford investing money because of his studies since he is sponsoring himself [...] do you think 0.03BTC is a cool present 🎁 for a birthday.

I believe that such gift is very valuable and, most of all, it will help him a lot to face the struggles of finishing his studies (buying books, paying the tax for studies etc.). So excepting the fact that such gift is useful also for Bitcoin itself -- after all, it will represent another user enrolled in the system -- it will also be very helpful for your friend.

I, for one, decided to make a small contribution each year for my son. Since he was born I decided to buy each year around 250$ in BTC and leave it inside a wallet until he will turn 18. At that age, in my country, he should have finished high school and (if he wishes) be eligible to go to a university. State universities have very few free spots and there are small chances to get a free spot. However, there are many private universities and even private spots at State universities. Tuition tax is smaller compared to western countries, yet for us it's a lot. I believe that this amount, collected for 18 years (so it should be ~4500$ in BTC), will help him pay for a part of his studies. Of course, if BTC value will soar in this time, then this amount should be enough for helping him pay also for Master and, why not?, for Ph.D. studies, if he'll be interested in going so far.

So, as you see, I am also sharing your idea, OP, the only difference between us being the fact that I will offer my gift much, much later than you.

his birthday is on 27th of this month

So what did you do in the end? Did you give him 0.03BTC? If yes, what was his reaction?

Mulțumesc Gazeta, am participat la toate ultimele concursuri. Baftă să avem!

Amin!

Avem o nouă reeditare a concursului lui Krogoth.

Merci, NeuroticFish!

I did the same. Looks like the mods caught it and deleted the troll's post and all the off-topic comments.

Lol, I did the same as well. I did it before knowing you or NeuroticFish also reported those posts. However, I reported them for "off-topic, zero-vale posts", not for trolling, yet I believe trolling was a better reason to state within the report. I was also surprised to see that his topic was also vanished. I did not report the topic, as I thought there are small chances to have it trashed as well, yet it happened (thanks to you and NeuroticFish). I reported only the posts from those screenshots.

except ScamVirus and sashan, they are all your friends with whom you are praising each other, every time you have an opportunity. And that's a fact, public on the forum.
Obviously, we are a gang.
GazetaBitcoin's groupie 1miau

@FatFork and NeuroticFish: I believe that shitcoincollector12 (and, most likely, saxydev too) will consider you now as groupies as well Roll Eyes

from what I'm seing having a beef with GazetaBitcoin is enough enough to be marked as a scammer and Trust to be nuked
Thus the reason I'm posting from an alt account since I'm 100% sure that I'll be painted red, or the least neutral for even blinking at you

In Romanian we have a saying: the mouth of the sinner speaks the Truth. Basically it refers to those situations where someone which is not considered to be credible says, sometime, some words which become true or are true. It seems that shitcoincollector12 was right when he said that. Probably he anticipated he won't be able to control himself and he will say things which will bring him some red tags (which, eventually, happened).
1671  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help me translate my best posts in your Local Board on: March 04, 2023, 09:22:51 PM
since I'm a translator and have a spare time can I translate your thread too? Currently, I am interested in this topic (Cryptocurrency vs digital money issued by the State - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5212133)

Since CBDC is all over the place right now and becoming a hot topic.

Hey there dansus02! Thank you for the interest shown about translating my topics! I really appreciate that! And, indeed, CDBCs come more and more into our attention, day by day. It's not good, but it is what it is...

If you are ok with that.

Indeed, your choice is a great thread! I enjoyed a lot writing and I hope it was useful for all its readers. So yes, sure, you can proceed with the translation.

I have one small request to you: to send me a preview of the translation (through PM) before posting it. Just to make sure everything looks perfect Smiley

Oh, and one more thing: As I wrote above, this topic is, actually, just one part (part II) of a four-topics sequel. Would you like to translate the other three parts of the sequel too?

I'm also in favor of selecting a safe option and I'll pay for whatever you decide to select for sending it to ChiBitCTy.  Smiley

Yay! I am glad we are on the same page here Smiley I already tried today to find the prices, but I was unlucky. I was at the Post Office but it was closed. Tomorrow is closed as well... I will go again on Monday and I will be able to provide you the price options then. If we are lucky, by the end of month ChiBitCTy will receive the prize.

Except if it's more than 100$ but as I've already said a few weeks ago:

I don't know your final shipping costs but I believe it's not too much and won't make me bankrupt.  Cheesy[...]
We are not shipping an Elephant.  Cheesy Cheesy
It's not an Elephant, isn't it?  Cheesy

Looooooool! Lucky for you, it's not an elephant =))) (Even if it were, I don't know if I was able to ship it. Nor with Romanian Post, anyway. I also don't know if it could fit inside the envelope Smiley)

I've sent you some Merit for your effortWink

Danke, 1miau!
1673  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Few Trusted Escrow Provider on: March 04, 2023, 06:46:16 PM
I have updated the Trusted Escrow Provider's list. BPIP trust rank updated so I have rearranged it if there is any change.

Hey shasan! Do you have any news on these matters?

8. Delete Hhampuz and krogothmanhattan per their request.
Will do but before then I will send them a message as they are already on the list.

Have you tried to contact krohoth and Hhampuz? Have they changed their minds? I see they are still in the list...

11. I suggest you to PM Blazed (although there are low chances for him to ever reply, since he was last active in 2020), TwinWinNerD, ninjaboon, BitCoinDream, and Dudeperfect, for making sure they are still offering the service.
I will do so.

Besides, have you tried to contact these users too? Have they replied...?

I am asking because it is important to have this list properly updated... Let's avoid what happened in the other two threads about escrow providers Smiley

And I also have a suggestion: topic title should be Few Trusted Escrow Providers, not "Provider" Smiley Can you add that extra "s" to "Provider", please?
1674  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Reason for the existence of Bitcoin? on: March 03, 2023, 11:58:23 PM
I was really taking my time asking myself what is the purpose for  bitcoin existence

I think the answer here is mostly philosophic.  Bitcoin exists because it was needed. And why it was needed is explained below.

Does SATOSHI NAKAMOTO really stated why he want to make bitcoin be in existence

Actually, yes, he stated that. And what he stated was the following:

Quote
The root problem with conventional currency is all the trust that's required to make it work. The central bank must be trusted not to debase the currency, but the history of fiat currencies is full of breaches of that trust. Banks must be trusted to hold our money and transfer it electronically, but they lend it out in waves of credit bubbles with barely a fraction in reserve. We have to trust them with our privacy, trust them not to let identity thieves drain our accounts. Their massive overhead costs make micropayments impossible.

Quote
What is needed is an electronic payment system based on cryptographic proof instead of trust, allowing any two willing parties to transact directly with each other without the need for a trusted third party. Transactions that are computationally impractical to reverse would protect sellers from fraud, and routine escrow mechanisms could easily be implemented to protect buyers.

A lot of people automatically dismiss e-currency as a lost cause because of all the companies that failed since the 1990's. I hope it's obvious it was only the centrally controlled nature of those systems that doomed them. I think this is the first time we're trying a decentralized, non-trust-based system.

did he specify they category of people that are going to per-take on bitcoin!!?

Was that actually needed? Lol! If he said X or Y are not supposed to use Bitcoin, would, in fact X and Y not use it if they wanted to?
1675  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Beginner Necroposting and Bumping Question on: March 03, 2023, 11:53:40 PM
1. If necroposting isn't allowed to prevent spamming why aren't very old threads lock?
I can't see any rule that prohibited necroposting. [...]
Regarding necro posting, if the necro post is substantial (doesn't break the rule especially rule 1 and 2 (2014/07/21 version)), then it's OK

Please be aware that, if the necro post is not substantial, then it's not OK anymore (at least, this is what I understand from mprep's statement).
So, basically, there is no rule against necro posting. However, if OP wishes to bring back to life an old thread, this can be done, in my opinion, by editing it (if he was the author + combined with a post like "March 2023 Update: I found new evidence / new information etc.") or adding new valuable information to what has been discussed, if he believes that it would be useless to start another thread on same matter, since one was already created. Take for example the topic Merry Christmas to the Forum, which is brought back to life each year on Christmas. Practically, by typing there after 365 days, those posts can be considered as necro posts. Yet there is no reason for starting a new similar thread each year.

2. If I come across an old thread from 2021 and I think I have new input to contribute, would do you advice me to start a new thread instead of bumping the old one?

Same as above. Each case should be analyzed on an individual basis. If what you want to add is precisely on the subject of the topic, then you could add your post to the old thread.

Basically these guidelines can be considered as common sense. If you feel that you are not on same page with the main subject, then start a new thread. But if you'll discuss precisely same ideas, you can use the old topic.

Are you taking into account the fluctuations of 1,000 other users, based on when they were last refreshed?

More importantly, in this context, the formula for most trusted doesn't care about merit, earned or not. Plus, the 'most trusted' would definitely fluctuate each month with the DT1/2 random selection process which shuffles trusted feedback around and would change the scores.

I come back to this thread for a sequel of my earlier post. I have to confirm what ibminer said above. However, I still have one question...

So as you know, theymos made another reshuffle of DT members, on March 1st. By pure chance, I took a screenshot of my bpip profile before the reshuffle and one just after. Before the reshuffle I was in DT2 and after I reached back in DT1. Also have in mind that, during this time, my Trust score has not changed, nor my positions on "Most merit" and "Most earned merit" ladders (I received some merits between those pictures, yet I remained on same positions on both merit ladders). What I am trying to say is that, excepting the fact that I went back to DT1, nothing else changed (nothing which could have any implication on "Most trusted" and "Most recognized" ladders).

So the differences are the following:

Before the reshuffle:

After the reshuffle:

As you can see, there is a huge step forward on both "Most trusted" and "Most recognized" ladders. Last month, after the reshuffle, when I went to DT2 from DT1 I also noticed a huge difference on these ladders, but the huge step was back Smiley

Anyway, my question is the following: I understand that both of these ladders are influenced by the presence in DT1, respectively DT2; however, is it actually normal such a huge difference? There is a 69 positions difference on "Most recognized" ladder and 176 on "Most trusted"... I don't know but, from my perspective, this difference seems way too big to be natural...

ibminer, please don't take me wrong -- I am not questioning your algorithm here -- I posted all these just to ask if it would be a good idea to make a double-check, to ensure that all these scores are calculated correcly Smiley

Hearing about Bitcoin ATM machines in advanced countries makes me think it's the best and cheapest way to deposit and send crypto, especially for those who know little about crypto and don't want their identity revealed when buying it.

Actually no... it's not cheapest way and also not best way. It's a good way, but not best. Maybe a better alternative is a peer-to-peer transfer and buy directly from someone interested in selling (or vice-versa). However, I also can not call this as best way, as it involves some risks (you don't know who you'll met and maybe it's a thief). However, talking directly to someone and making a peer-to-peer deal would help you a lot regarding fees (meaning the price for which the counterparty will sell you BTC).

ATMs offer anonymity and anonymity has a price. Yet the price you paid is way too big. As others said already, ATM fees are usually around 10% (a bit more for selling crypto to the ATM and a bit lower than 10% for buying from it). However, in your case, the ATM robbed you, by selling you at a price with 25% higher than CoinMarketCap price! What ATM was it? What brand? Was it a cash-in / cash-put machine or cash-in only? I am asking because I also noticed in my country that cash-in only ATMs sell you BTC at prices way higher than the two-ways ATMs.

Other than that, I see there is a phone number on the ticket you presented in OP. Have you tried to dial that number and ask why was that huge price used? It's a small chance, but maybe it was an internal error of the operator...

@GazetaBitcoin, please let me know how much shipping will cost

Yes, Sir! (Indian accent Smiley)

I'll refund your expenses by sending you the equivalent in BTC to your address.

That would be 2BTC, Sir (Same Indian accent Smiley)

Nah, disregard that =))) Jokes aside, I intend to go tomorrow at the Post Office and ask about all possibilities to ship the card. I would basically avoid sending it in a simple envelope, as I did in giammangiato's case. I think it's too risky... Besides, he was from Italy, thus chances to have the simple envelope lost in translation were lower compared to sending a simple envelope over the ocean. I would rather ask for the price of (1) sending the envelope as a recommended letter (this type of letters / envelopes are more secure, as far as I know) and (2) also use an AWB code for tracking. These 2 options will not raise too much the overall price of the shipping and they will make it more secure. I will also ask for the price of sending a simple envelope and I will present you all possibilities.

I'll refund your expenses

Thank you, 1miau! Much appreciated!

Once again, congrats to the winners, many thanks to RickDeckard and deep wishes of good health for yahoo62278!

Some websites support image upload and export bbcode link.

Thank you for your contribution, UchihaSarada.

Why do you limit this with imgur.com and imgur.io only?

First of all, I did not limit the topic to imgur (be it .com or .io). If you look just at the post above yours, you will see this:

Besides, an alternative site is ImgBB. Pictures upload is possible from there as well, by following the steps 1. - 6. from OP.

Needless to say, this website appears also in OP.

However, I mostly focused this thread around imgur as, back then (and even now, I guess), it was one of most popular sites for image uploading. I also know the other alternatives you presented (https://giphy.com, https://postimages.org, https://epvpimg.com), yet have in mind that this topic is mostly oriented to users sort of new to the forum and not to les conaisseurs.

You know all these sites and it's good for you. But if a Jr. Member will perform a Google search for "How to upload pics on BitcoinTalk" and finds a thread containing plenty of websites, all being thoroughly explained, this may lead to the opposite way -- of confusing the user. This is the reason for which I mostly kept this topic as the basics of the basics regarding image upload subject. I tried to keep it as simple as possible, in order to be easy to be understood by many users and to not determine "Tl; dr" reactions Smiley

I come back to this topic, as I observed that imgur.com does not allow uploading pictures from mobile phones anymore. Even before it was not so easy, meaning that, in order to upload a picture from mobile, you had to select to see the page in Desktop mode, but now this workaround does not work anymore. I found though another way for being able to upload pictures on imgur: by accessing the .io version of the site (www.imgur.io) and selecting to see the page in Desktop mode, it's still possible to upload pictures from mobile phones.

I hope this help.

I also added all this information to OP.
