1781  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Progressive principles all lies on: June 28, 2014, 09:10:10 PM
I have just a few basic issues that I consider to be deal killers for progressives. They are all logic fails that expose progressives as a group of people whose tenets are built on lies preached as truth by intellectual priests and control mongers.

1. Death penalty is not a deterrent. We put armed prison guards in towers for a reason. The death penalty is an obvious deterrent. Its implementation and other cultural factors like "honor killings", the war on drugs, poverty are impossible to factor out of statistics, but don't try and convince anyone the death penalty is not a deterrent. A world filled with murder says otherwise. The argument enrages me. Get this though, I don't believe in the death penalty 99% of the time. I don't think we have high enough standards of evidence. But don't make me spew stupid arguments, convince me otherwise.

Maybe it is a deterrent and maybe it isn't. But there is a big difference between the guy in the watchtower with a gun and the vague possibility that committing murder might cost your life in the end. In order for it to be a deterrent it would have to be factor in preventing someone from doing something that often isn't rational in the first place. It may be a minor deterrent, but it's certainly not at the front of peoples mind when they're murdering or planning to murder.
1782  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 1,000 dead: Report indicates VA scandal is worse than anyone knew on: June 28, 2014, 09:06:31 PM
This is one case in which it wouldn't have mattered whether we dismissed the VA administrator or not. The entire system needs an overhaul, including firing the people who were involved in this scandal.

Hard to fire government employee.

And while they are incompetent, they still provide benefit by doing meaningful work.

There are a lot of government employees that don't do meaningful work, hence this group of people will never get into any kind of scandal. Why keeping them around?

It will be hard to fire too many individuals since this seems to be an over arching problem with the whole system, and not just a few bad employees.

1784  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Germany sacks Verizon over NSA spying on: June 28, 2014, 09:00:21 PM
Short reporting clip from Russia Today on it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yxy8UShBjKc
Quote
Citing concerns over the NSA's wiretapping of Chancellor Angela Merkel and other top officials' phones, the German Interior Ministry announced Thursday that it will not renew its contract with Verizon to provide service for government ministries. As part of an effort to revamp its secure communications networks, the country will instead rely on Germany's own Deutsche Telekom. RT's Ameera David has more details on the announcement and its fallout.
Apparently, Merkel got herself a new 3400$ Blackberry w/ some special crypto chip in it so that all her communications are on lock down. I hope this is just a start in a world backlash against the NSA as well as continual and rising opposition to it from many her in America (notice I don't say the United States).

I wonder how much that cost Verizon.

I wonder if things like this will force corporations to decide to fight against the government intrusions. If it costs them enough money you can bet they will attempt to do something about it.
1785  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Doge game over? on: June 28, 2014, 08:52:05 PM
Now with all those shitcoins, it looks like nobody cares about Doge, at least they are not interested to pay a lot of money for Doge, and this will happen with Darkcoin too, as the hype will move away to another new coin. So basically there will only be one coin that is worth investing and that is BTC

BTC is not worth investing in truthfully.

Even if you bought 500 Bitcoin at $500 and Bitcoin were to reach $1,000 in the next 6 months(which is very unlikely without Mr trading bot willy), you'd only have make double your investment...

In Altcoins you can put in $100, and then the coin goes up 50x within the next 2 months, and youve made $5,000 off that original $100 investment..

Bitcoin is useless for investing in...from an investors perspective.

Easier said than done.

In the world of investing 200% interest in a year is insane. Bernie Madoff ran his Ponzi at 10% interest per year. Think about that for a second.

in a REGULATED Market.
He was forced to run his scam with the *perception of following laws.
and he also started in 1960.. long history there
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Madoff

not sure where you got 10% interest from but comparing those tow things is dumb.
for one thing if an investment rose 200% who is to say it's going to do that every year ?
pointless comparisons.. never compare Regulated Markets with Unregulated markets lol

and about Doge..
I called it long ago
by myself as ALL of you out there Trolled and fought me over it.. i was right and i told you all so.
time to wake up and use common sense and not be blind or deceitful because of money period.
i said long ago it was nothing a but a stupid clone coin with a new icon and name.. reality check.
and community my bloody ass..
the so called community is / was brats with ADD and GPU's etc they sold off months ago and moved to other coins
and i pegged it to the day in advance and posted a graph on the day it started going down hill proving it.
once mining profitability was on par with any other coin it was game over..

So what i mean is it won't be going anywhere near what it was way back price wise.
we might have some fluctuations in price to make a bit of money but that applies to any coin.
It has no future and yet i am again bad mouthing this coin and all week long i am stuck holdings some of the crap coins too (while i bad mouth them)
i bought some to arb some coins and sure enough as usual as soon as i get my coin i bough the god damn price tanks hard on me.. figures  Roll Eyes

reality is people are only interested in fake little so called pumps and daily clone coins to pump and dump
that is your Doge community.. well at least the ones that stuck around after selling their gpus while back after hearing about Scypt Asics coming etc.
sold my GPU too..

is there a more profitable coin ?
then it's dead and 99.99% of people will say a bunch of lippy bs and quietly move to the one that pay more..
all the shit talk on a forum means squat.. money talks
and no one here cares anything at all about supporting Altcoins.. they care about Shitcoin to Bitcoin To Fiat
and if they say other wise they are lying through their teeth.

He was the one saying that a 100% gain in 6 months is something to scoff at. I'm certainly not making any claims about bitcoin performing at any level over any amount of time. But I was just pointing that out to highlight how silly the statement I quoted was.

Since this is the Monero thread I need some of you to talk some sense in to me. After seeing Vericoin I can't come up with a good reason to hold XMR when VRC is looking better in every aspect I can think of. Surely I'm missing something here and I'd like to be set straight if possible.

Does Monero have a GUI wallet yet btw? If not, timeline?

you must be joking right, vericoin is just the pump and dump of the moment, it offers nothing at long term, people going to vericoin now are like a moth to flame.

Ok so Vericoin isn't anon then? It's not implemented in the coin? It's just a concept?

If Vericoin offers nothing long term, what does Monero offer long term? I like Monero I just want to make sure I'm on the right page here and find out what is true and what is not.

Anon is not implemented in vericoin. It is "supposed" to use a coinjoin based anon feature, which is hardly anonymous as shown by the unraveling of sharecoin's(blockchain) coinjoin..and as said by gmaxwell, the maker of coinjoin. Coinjoin may be the worst "anonymous" feature you can have in a coin as you will always need two or more people to "mix" transactions, and even then it's fairly easy to find out the sender and reciever.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=602041.0 <-----Vericoin's "anon feature" is not incorporated in its coin at this time. It's "anon feature" is also based off of Darkcoin's masternode/Darksend system as you can see. You should note that Darkcoin's masternode/darksend is closed source, and there has been many coins running to make a anonymous feature similar to Darkcoin's, such as Supercoins with it's Supernodes, XC with it's Xnodes, Vericoin with it's Veribit's and more.

Out of all the coins that use coinjoin for "anonymous" sending, Darkcoin's is the only one that has a decentralized and trustless system, XC's anonymous sending is trusted and you must rely on the fact that the Xnodes wont steal your coins, though they could. Supercoin's Supernodes are trusted as well and not even available atm(it's all just talk), and Vericoin's Veribit's are also trusted and not available atm(it's just all talk)

I really really suggest you do research Este Nuno, as you seem a bit clueless atm to be honest. 99% of those "anonymous" coins using coinjoin based Darkcoin anonymity are just pretending to do so so the dev's can make a quick buck, look at Libertycoin and HonorCoin for example, the devs ran off with a ton of Bitcoin after dumping it all on the exchange while they pretended to be making anonymous features for the coin, and worse. Vericoin, Supercoin, Pinkcoin, Orangecoin, Cloakcoin, Veilcoin, etc are all essentially copying/pretending to copy Darkcoin's masternodes/darksend in an attempt to make a quick buck off dull-witted buyers.

Vericoin was nothing to me until recently which is why I'm trying to find out what's true and what's not. My preliminary readings on Vericoin from Vericoin sources suggested that the coin was anon, so I came here to see what the truth was.
1787  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Litecoin is officially dead on: June 28, 2014, 08:23:02 PM
Is the Litecoin dev team ramping up to take on the challenge of a new modern crypto battlefield? If not, why not? Look at how much is at stake. LTC has the resources and I'm sure the talent is there.

What can we expect to see from LTC over the next few months?

We can expect nothing, as they've done nothing the almost 3 years since Litecoin has been out. The "dev team" isnt even active and there are hardly any updates done for Litecoin at all. Litecoin's been pretty much abandoned by the dev team..

Do you think all the devs have sold their LTC stakes? Could that be part of the reason for the abandonment? Lack of incentive?

Why isn't the LTC community banding together to recruit new devs? There is a lot of money at stake here!

Why has there been such little up trend in Qora? I've been watching it passively on polo there and I'm not sure what to think of it. I would expect it to be a more popular coin considering the features and the promises. But it's not really. Why is that? Too much selling presser/over supply or is there very little interest and buys?

Damn steam is annoying me
I get so addicted and these mad sales don't help, Still have about 40 games I havent played

Yeah. I've had the same problem before. I have to really stop myself from buying too many games before I've finished the ones I'm currently playing or plan to play in the next little while. I'll always be able to buy new games later, and the prices are only going to go down so I can convince myself to wait. But it's not easy. Getting caught up in Steam sales is very easy. Tongue
1795  Economy / Economics / Re: Would a modern options and derivatives market reduce or increase volatility? on: June 28, 2014, 07:48:10 PM
So in reality having a solid options market would actually increase the liquidity of bitcoin but not necessarily decrease the volatility. But it's unlikely to increase the volatility, correct?

Correct

Think of options as side bets.   Traders use options because of leverage.   So they are not buying or selling bitcoin they are trading contracts on the side betting if bitcoin goes up or down by a certain date.

But options market makers are mostly writing the options.    Its really risky for them to do this so in order to hedge these bets they buy or sell the underlying.   Its called delta hedging.   Delta us how much the option mives w the stock.  The stock is one delta.   The more "in the money" the higher the delta.   Market makers don't care about direction.   They make money on premium and the premium is priced using volatility

When a product has options it gets traded a lot.   But its the same shares being passed back and forth by the same group of market makers.   This is why liquidity increase.   If you need to buy or sell the market maker takes your order.   You don't need to wait for a buyer or seller on other side.

Seems like it would be a net positive for bitcoin. I wonder why there is so much resistance to the idea of bitcoin options. Misinformation maybe?

I think they do cause autism.
And even if they don't, they are poison anyway, so I'm not going to take them.

You're crazy. You can't actually be serious can you?

I assume you were immunized as a child. But are you saying that if you had kids(do you?) you wouldn't get them their shots?

I don't have kids. I wouldn't give them shots if I would have.

Ah, PTL. At least your branch of idiocy will end with you.

Some people simply should not breed.

I don't like vaccines, so I should die? Seems legit.
You guys have very strong argumentation skills  Roll Eyes

If it seems harsh at least consider it from the point of view of someone who has children who are potentially in danger of losing their lives because of people like you who ignore scientific evidence and decide to make up their own minds based upon their own feelings.

Not that I'm saying I think you should die. But anti-vaxers impose a legitimate threat upon the lives of children everywhere and thus it's not surprising that people can make an argument that they shouldn't be allowed to continue to put others in danger.

If they give their children vaccines, what does it matter to them do I give it to my children?
Don't their kids already have immunity so my kids aren't going to infect them.

Most of those diseases can be treated, and most of death caused by them happens at developing countries, why don't we just make hospitals into them? (Oh, yeah, it is too expensive and they don't have money to pay for treatments)

Because the children who don't get their vaccines can bring back diseases that were virtually eradicated and not every child is old enough to have the full course of standard vaccines yet.

What if there was a vaccine that was 100% proven to cause zero side effects, not even one in a million chance of mild symptoms. Would you take that/give if to your children or are you just being obtuse for the sake of it?

If there would be zero side effects and it is proved believable, of course, why not.

The ones used today either have side effects so minor they're not worth concern or the chance of a major side effect is so low that it's not even worth considering, so why not use our current vaccines?

They are the best we got and they are far better than none at all

Right. They are so far beyond better than nothing at all that the people who ignore the evidence likely have some legitimate mental issues that they should look in to.

They are smart guys who have shown several times they know how to run their business, not like Karpeles.

I'm sure they save their keys in secure locations where even they couldn't get easily. Hopefully with multisig.

I'm not that smart and even I would do that.

However they are not using multisig (as per their audit) so not that secure....means that gun to the head of the right single person could potentially gain you the entire cold wallet.

People should take this potential situation much more seriously than they currently do. And not just exchange owners. With the amount of money we're talking about here at stake now this is something that is inevitable. There's no way around it. People will be robbed this way eventually.

How many devs are currently salaried? If we need more why aren't we adding more paid devs? Is it a lack of money or lack of will?
