182  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: GEOCACHE AFRICA 2018 UPDATE: Cache found!!!!!! on: March 04, 2019, 10:46:06 PM
Or, you can try another type of game, e.g. divide the private key into 2 or 3 segments and hide it in different places and point the lucky ones to this forum to somehow manage to put the private key together and move the bitcoin to their wallets...
Or, if you want to teach the people who find your cache about the beauties of the system, use a multisig address and hide the private keys in different places Smiley In this case they can agree on the transaction details before both of the parties signes the transaction (so it will not be possible for one of the people to grab all the bitcoins and run away like in my first suggestion)
183  Other / Meta / Re: Community generated suggestions to improve the forum (+ eventual voting on them) on: March 03, 2019, 11:21:59 PM
Add information to the users' profiles how much merit had been received and sent.
...
I won't display it like that because it is taking up more space in the profile, but would make the merit text clickable instead.
If someone is interested, he/she will click on the merit link and will get to the user's merit profile.
184  Economy / Economics / Re: JP Morgan’s new digital ‘coin’ is not a cryptocurrency, or even a stablecoin on: February 28, 2019, 09:48:30 PM
...
IT department probably came up with this and they showed how it would be cheaper and easier to transfer money around and gave a projection of how much they could save and considering it is insanely cheap it was some big number so the head of the company realized they could profit from this move and gave the green light.
Because this kind of system is highly automatized, they can really cut some costs on the labour (which can be a really high cost in a bank), so it's possible that they really can save if they develop this system and they start to use it.

I'll be in Denver looking at the Cannabis industry in coming weeks. When I get back I guess I'll start thinking about a new location, somewhere on this beautiful wet rock in space.
Thanks for keeping this 'game' alive, RodeoX Smiley
But, please don't put the cache on a desert island somewhere in the middle of the ocean, if possible Smiley
186  Other / Meta / Re: What does "leet" means in my profile? on: February 26, 2019, 09:03:07 PM
User philipma1957 may reach that eleet position at first followed by the people who were on the list, but it may take a while. Smiley

Wait till they see this thread, then they'll start scrambling to be the first Cheesy
Or they just won't realize it if they don't check their stats after every post, if they post in several topics, they can easily miss it.
I have nearly missed it, but was really surprised when I had that 'leet' appear at my stats...
187  Economy / Economics / Re: JP Morgan’s new digital ‘coin’ is not a cryptocurrency, or even a stablecoin on: February 25, 2019, 10:47:18 PM
...
So, why would anyone prefer JPcoin over XRP?
Because of marketing, because average joes belive in the old and well established banks rather than the new  tech stuff...
Average joes will always trust who they are told (by the media) to trust and won't search for the fine print and for the technical details...

188  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: Las Vegas Strippers Accept Bitcoin via QR Tattoos on: February 25, 2019, 10:37:27 PM
I wonder how they get confirmations before they move to the next stage.
...
Now, compare that to paying with bitcoin. I eat a meal and pay with bitcoin. It takes 20 seconds for me to open my wallet and scan the QR code. My transaction is immediately broadcast. In 20-30 minutes (usually, depending on the fees, block frequency, etc, but certainly nowhere near 3 days), my bitcoin reaches the restaurant's wallet. What can I do in those 30 minutes to stop that transaction happening? Launch a 51% attack on bitcoin for the sake of 50-100 bucks? Laughable really.

An unconfirmed bitcoin transaction is both a lot more secure and a lot more rapid to "confirm" than an "unconfirmed" credit card transaction. I think we as a community don't do a great job of explaining that to people. 20-30 minutes is lightning (pardon the pun) fast compared to credit cards, and a lot more difficult to reverse once broadcast.
...
I'm not 100% sure but the others with better knowledge on the topic will correct me if I'm wrong, but some wallets have the possibility to re-broadcast the transaction with higher fee to a different bitcoin address. (If you have accidentally sent the bitcoins to somewhere and you realize it immediately).
Or, if I'm wrong and it's only possible to raise the transaction fee if you have broadcasted it with low or zero fee and you can only change the fee and not the bitcoin address itself.
189  Other / Meta / Re: Prevent banned users from changing profile data on: February 21, 2019, 10:27:52 PM
^For now banned users are able to login and can read the PM's and their post history but not sure they can be able to change their profile data or it might be a bug like what happened when merit system was implemented the banned users are also got merits and able to spend it.
Are they still able to spend their merits or this has been solved? There would be a real abuse if banned users can still send merits...
190  Other / Meta / Re: Notify User when they've been quoted on: February 21, 2019, 10:19:35 PM
You are looking for the Piggy's notification bot.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5023605.0

You can try the new notification system, in order to use it send a pm to Maggiordomo by placing in the subject subscribe and in the body a link to a thread you created (the thread must be on the Archival board anywhere else won't work), this will be used to notify about you being mentioned or quoted across all the forum. You will receive a message confirming you are signed up and some basic information.
When somebody will type @yourUsername or @your=Username (if you have spaces in your username, they need to be replaced with = ) you will get one or more notifications in your thread.
~

Oh damn this is cool, thanks for this!
It's really useful, set it up for yourself and let us know if you need someone to quote you to test if it works fine for you as well, it's a really good thing to have here, you'll see
191  Other / Meta / Re: How can we protect Newbies from getting scammed? on: February 21, 2019, 10:09:19 PM
Short answer you can't.
...
You can help with showing the trust score everywhere on the forum and disabling pm for newborn accounts and red trust accounts but it will not fix the problem.
I don't really think this will help...
A real scammer will buy a different, well ranked account after a successful scam attempt, because of the red trust and because he/she can afford it after a succesful scam.

I just don't uderstand people, here in the forum and sometimes in the real life...
If a stranger tells you on the street that if you hand over your wallet to him, he will show you that there's a secret pocket in it, where you can find hidden money which you haven't been aware before, would you belive him and would you hand over your wallet with your savings?  Greed and laziness helps scammers...

People should understand that they have to think before something happens, and not just after...
192  Local / Other languages/locations / Re: Magyar (Hungarian) on: February 21, 2019, 07:11:48 PM
srácok, nektek milyen coinokból áll a portfóliótok?

193  Other / Meta / Re: How can we protect Newbies from getting scammed? on: February 20, 2019, 10:31:55 PM
Newbies (and other members) should know that if something is too good to be true, it is usually not true...
Also, there should be something that reminds newbies that bitcoin is really similar to the internet (because if someone starts to deal with bitcoin, he/she has some minimal knowledge about the internet otherwise he/she couldn't get in touch with bitcoin) so bitcoin is really similar to the internet, if you don't hand over your password of your email address to a stranger, you should not hand over any password, private key, etc... to strangers, doesn't matter how nicely the stranger asks...

195  Economy / Economics / Re: JP Morgan’s new digital ‘coin’ is not a cryptocurrency, or even a stablecoin on: February 20, 2019, 09:58:03 PM
This is the first of its kind of a bank coin but just wait until other multinational investment bank and financial services companies do the same thing.
These types of institutions are playing with trillions of dollars so if their coin fails in value, they still have much fiat to fall back on.

they shouldn't ever fall in value though. they shouldn't have any speculative value in the first place. the whole system is permissioned and everything is centrally administered and reversible. the whole thing sounds like a gimmick tbh. it's not even an interbank system with federated consensus. it's just a private "blockchain", a glorified database run by chase. why would other banks prefer this to the legacy system?
Global banks could have some advantage of this system, today they use the old and slow legacy system and the transactions are expensive and needs a lot of manual work on the sender and also on the receiver side. In the EU, they use SEPA which is a kind of quicker and automated system (less manual work needed, so quicker and cheaper), a blockchain based automated system would need even less manual work so it would be more quick and even more cheap).
So if there's a bank who wants to transfer internationally between it's subsidiaries, it can be a solution for intra bank transfers.

196  Other / Meta / Re: Deleted posts on: February 18, 2019, 11:23:38 PM
Same, I was thinking it was some violation at first but it tends to feel disheartening at times when it's not.
It is some sort of violation otherwise it wouldn't have been deleted. Posts containing advertisements or any kind of off-topic replies, unknown links, shorteners or otherwise illegal or untrustworthy content. Everyone has posts deleted sometimes just don't break the rules consciously.
Sometimes it's not a violation, but the topic owner has a point of view about something and the poster has someting totally different, the topic owner can decide to delete that post without any consequence...
This is how self moderated topics work. Or, if you don't prefer someone, and you don't want him/her to show up in your self moderated topic, you can delete every post he/she tries to post in your topic and nobody can do anything agains it, this is the purpose of the self moderated topics...

198  Other / Meta / Re: [BUG?]Theymos, can you solve the mystery? newbies with 2 merit watering avatar? on: February 15, 2019, 07:22:09 PM
There is one more related mistery - Newbies with signatures:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5106676.0
For example this profile:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=15085
It would be interesting to get answer about these mysteries
Maybe they bought copper membership?
Is it possible to decide if someone has bought copper if he/she don't wear the membership?

...
It makes me wonder how much spam a user can get away with, without getting banned!
If they post shit in the Off topic section and maybe in Archive, there's no limit I guess...
I haven't reported anything in the Off topic section yet, and I don't know what would mods do with reports in off topic reports...

EDIT: a 'know' was missing Smiley
200  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: The Jet Cash coffee lounge thread. on: February 15, 2019, 06:42:29 PM
Well this coffee lounge seems to have gone  bit quiet. I guess I need to switch brands, so lets move away from talking about boring stats, and talk about off grid mining. Now that summer is approaching, I really fancy parking a camper van on the beach, and running a small mining rig from a solar panel.

Ignoring the delightful company that one can find on the beaches, swimming in the sea is a great was to gain some iodine. Iodine was removed from bread as a raising agent in the 1970s, and it was replaced by bromine. Just another way that the global eugenics lot try to reduce fertility and the population. Swimming in the sea is a great way to do your bit for humanity, and supporting Bitcoin helps to cope with the depredations of the bankers.
Could you recommend a small minig rig for off grid mining? What would you mine with that small rig? (I think you don't want to mine bitcoin with a solar powered small rig?)
