I added Nxt & a bunch of random links on random entries in the OP.

If you have more links for any of the currencies in the OP, feel free to share... anything like wikis, block explorers, discussion threads, how tos, important services , etc.

I will add Datacoin next, but I'm not sure if I'll have time today.
1962  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Innovative Alternative Crypto Currencies on: December 15, 2013, 01:16:47 PM
I think Devcoin deserves a mention.

After all it is still the only crypto to use receiver files (a key innovation) and the coin has been running very well for a very long time.

I do like that Dev coin was "created to help fund open source projects created by programmers, hardware developers, writers, musicians, painters, graphic artists and filmmakers." I also agree they have been innovative and are certainly different from most ALTs. Devtome is great if it will ever be fully adopted.

I pretty much agree with you, I will think about adding it to the list.
1963  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Innovative Alternative Crypto Currencies on: December 15, 2013, 01:14:11 PM
I'd suggest that you just add those coins/projects which client/application has already been released.

If I were you, I'd dismiss everything else until further "concrete materialization".

I agree with you. For the most part I try to only add something that's in development if I think it is a very important project or if it is a very ambitious/innovative project. I will try to keep from posting too many coins that are in development, but some ideas are just so great and the dev teams so capable that I feel there is little chance they won't be fully developed (like Zerocoin).

My problem with the above coins:  I'm still on the fence about the coins that are changing the hashing alogrithms to make them CPU/GPU only. I'm afraid I will determine them "innovative" and then next week someone release a GPU miner for them... it's happened before with many coins that claim to be "CPU/GPU only". Which one of these three is the most GPU/ASIC resistant? Or is there a different one that is more GPU/ASIC resistant than these three?
No idea about the others, but for YAC it was never GPU resistance although a lot of idiots used to belive this.
YAC is currently mined mostly by GPUs, but I think this will change.

I'd say YAC is nearly 99.9% ASIC resistant unless it would grow to a size far far bigger than bitcoin today. It changes memory requirement over time so a new ASIC would have to be made for every new n-factor since it doubles memory needed. Currently this happens 2 times per year but there will be less and less n-changes in the future. There would also be competition from botnets/servers/... so ASICs are unlikely to break even on development costs.

An n-change also favours CPU strongly over GPU so it will make it harder and harder for GPUs.
YAC is the only crypto I'm aware of that adapts to technological innovation by making hashing "harder" over time.
There had been FPGA implementations, but they do not function anymore. For most cryptos it will be there hadn't been
FPGA implementations, but in the future this will be possible. YAC's the other(better) way round.

Thanks for the info on YAC. I agree it does seem ASIC resistant... but then again, so do Quark/SecureCoin/A lot of coins. I can't add them all simply because they are ASIC resistant. I'm hesistant to add them all because of their different PoWs.. if I started doing that then this list will get really long really fast. I guess I'm still on the fence.

I am adding Datacoin and Nxt to the list this morning. Smiley
1965  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NXT proven not a scam. on: December 15, 2013, 01:01:32 PM
I'm not against NXT or anything and I think it is a good idea, but this statement is misleading "NXT is a threat for many because of integrated exchange, colored coins, assets, etc..."

These features don't exist yet. You don't know if they will ever come to fruition or not. Investing in Nxt is a gamble on whether A. Those features will ever be implemented at all and B. If another crypto doesn't beat Nxt to them (which is likely on at least some of the features) and capture the market share before Nxt can take off.

Also, Nxt is not without competition. Mastercoins got a head start on NXT and I venture to guess they will have some of these features before NXT will.. they have huge bounties for them... 300 BTC for a distributed exchange for instance. Mastercoins aside... there is also eMunie, Protoshares, and Bitshares all doing similar things with similar features.

To claim victory for Nxt right now is a little premature IMO. I'm going to wait and see how the gen2 ALT wars plays out a little bit before picking my horse. At this point all of them are a quite a gamble. A lot of promises could easily turn out to be broken promises.

/rant

That aside, I like the idea of Nxt and think it could be a great thing. However, it isn't that great as it exists today.

International & domestic customers should have better shipping costs now for lower quantities of coins. In some cases international shipping is ~$15 cheaper than it was when I was using straight flat rate prices. Please let me know if shipping costs seem out of whack. It is very challenging to get shipping costs to automatically calculate dynamically for each user ACCURATELY. I played with the numbers/dimensions for about a hour and I think I finally have the shipping costs somewhat accurate to their actual costs.

If something seems way too low or way too high, please tell me.  Smiley

Thanks!
1968  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Namecoin wallet - which website? on: December 14, 2013, 11:21:45 AM
Thanks, then what is www.namecoin.info then? Is it hosted by Namecoin or a fake?

Hmm, I'm not sure... it seems one might be an independent site- or perhaps the old/new namecoin websites. I don't think either are malicious.

It is still in development: zerocoin.org

A few random updates:

Re: Fincen
There are two way I see that I could get Fincen's attention and have them contact me:
1. Sell loaded coins. This could be argued as being a money transmitter... both crypto->crypto and FIAT->crypto.
2. Sell coins made of precious metals. This could also be argued as being a money transmitter. Exchanging cryptos/FIAT for precious metals (AKA. other stores of value.) The way I read Fincen's guidelines it includes precious metal exchange as money transmission, and I believe the government agrees with me at the moment. I think this is the reason Coinabul was subpoenaed earlier this year by the NY division of FINcen.

I am currently doing neither #1 nor #2, and I don't plan on doing those any time soon. I will sit on the 1000 coins I was planning on selling as loaded coins, until it is determined that I can sell them legally without registering as a MSB. I do not want to break any laws by doing this stuff, the last thing I want is a letter from Fincen. It is for this reason that the plans for the 1000 loaded coins may change. I have not really determined a course of action as of yet and am awaiting the outcome of Casascius' decision to stay in business or close up shop. Casascius has a lot more money for lawyers than I do, so if his legal team deems that selling loaded coins is indeed money transmission and/or chooses not to fight Fincen on this issue, then I will follow suit.

Again, for the time being I feel like what I'm doing by selling unloaded coins with no precious metals is well within the Fincen guidelines and it is not necessary to file as a MSB. Therefore, I will continue about business as normal (except the loaded coins will have to wait and/or have a change of plans for them).

----------
(legal bs aside)

We've now sold over 750 coins since November 24th. I am quite surprised at the interest in these, thanks a lot to everyone that ordered!

---------

Fun facts for the day:

Yes, I know I made up the word unassembled.  Cool

I saw the first two coins being sold on Ebay the other night. Someone had loaded it themselves and sold one for $99 and the other for ~$100. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=cryptovest&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc

Not bad.. well played sir.  Smiley

---------

We are trying to stay on top of the orders, but are finding ourselves falling behind several days at times. We have now shipped out all orders made up to today's orders. Please excuse us if there is a 1-3 business day delay in shipping.

---------

I will get a different shipping option enabled for international customers late this week. If ordering 20 coins or less, this will be cheaper than the current flat rate price. Also, coin capsules will be available in the store early next week for a nice way to store your coins. I think they will be $0.99 extra, and if you choose not to buy one your coin will simply be placed in a plastic bag (like all other orders have been done up to this point.) It is recommended to buy one, because you can place the piece of paper with the Litecoin address/QR code inside the capsule so it is less likely that you'll lose it. I am also looking at getting custom packaging for those that choose to buy the coins without a capsule, but I will not have these until sometime next year.. this will be much more professional than a plastic bag. Smiley

--------

The key insert generator does not work on Mac/Linux computers, because of the .NET framework requirements are not fully compatible with WINE just yet. Please take this into consideration when deciding to buy assembled or unassembled coins.

--------

Thanks again to everyone for your orders, I hope you like your coins! Smiley

1973  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: DATACOIN : Choosing the first document uploaded in the blockchain on: December 10, 2013, 01:25:46 PM
How useful is the block chain in Datacoin to store data?

What kinds of files can it store? How large of files can you upload?

Is it easy to upload/download them from the block chain, or does it take many steps?

I'm somewhat interested in this concept.
1974  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Innovative Alternative Crypto Currencies on: December 10, 2013, 01:13:28 PM
I already added Anon Coin- the first fully TOR (&i2p) integrated cryptocoin.

I need advice as to what to do regarding:

Possible future additions to the list (please convince me to add these coins.. I'm on the fence):
Nxt - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=303898.0
Protoshares - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=325261.0
Bitshares - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=313873.0
My problem with the above coins: It seems they're not really developed yet, although they did raise a lot of money. Since MasterCoin was the first to do this, I added them to the list. I'd like to see a little more development on the newer ones that were "crowd funded" before adding them. Otherwise, anyone could open fundraising and get added to this list... I want it to be a list of the most innovative. Please correct me if you think I'm wrong, show me what has actually been developed on the above coins.

Namecoin (Merge mineable SHA256 coin that acts a decentralized DNS) and United Scrypt Coin (the first merge mineable Scrypt coin) have both been added.

I'm still looking into other coins to add and have a couple in mind that I may add soon... I am trying to be picky when adding coins. I only want coins on this list that actually innovate. I am thinking of adding Anoncoin for being the first cryptocoin that has a fully integrated client in i2p/TOR.

1977  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Cryptocurrencies will succeed...NOT BITCOIN. on: December 08, 2013, 09:17:44 PM
Bitcoin is open sourced and can be changed at any time. IE. Anything another coin does to make itself better than Bitcoin, Bitcoin can do itself if given enough resources and time. Seeing as though most cryptos are open source, it wouldn't be very hard for Bitcoin to implement features of other block chains.

This is the one of the problems I see with the "X coin" will take over Bitcoin argument. Something incredibly unexpected would have to happen, like a big vulnerability in Bitcoin that collapses confidence it instantly or perhaps a 51% attack. If Bitcoin has to adapt to maintain its position on the top of the cryptocoin market, I think they will do this. There is a huge incentive for people that are invested in Bitcoin to do so and a lot of resources stemming from a 9 Billion dollar market cap.

And then there's the "Network Effect". Someone will find out about Bitcoin before they do *coin because Bitcoin is all over the news and everyone (in the public) is talking about Bitcoin. Since someone is more likely to hear about Bitcoin first, they are more likely to invest in it, develop a website or software for it, or just simply use it. The network effect is why Bitcoin will always be the "gold" of electronic currencies until it dies, and it will always be valued as such until its death.

Thanks for bringing more attention to this project.

May I ask how you know that this will be released as an independent coin next year? I haven't heard of that yet, but if true it is great news!.

The government chopped off Bitcoin's balls, I'm glad someone will make this awesome idea a reality.

Honestly I believe gold and silver would be better suited for this situation.

Yes, in this kind of scenario you need some precious metals. Smiley
