All three were done by the same IP, so it seems that his account was never taken over by anyone. I suppose it's possible that some malware on his computer stole his cookie or something. I can't find any evidence confirming or contradicting whether he sent that PM specifically.

Ideally, the coins would be destroyed just moments before they would be stolen so that no one would lose coins who wouldn't lose them due to theft anyway. Since we can't exactly predict the future, there may be some cases like that, but it should be extremely rare.

If no one loses any coins, then that'd be a massive success. The goal of the policy would not be to destroy coins, but to prevent lost and insecure coins from being stolen.

I actually have code written for exporting PMs into an mbox file compatible with Thunderbird, but I haven't gotten around yet to figuring out how best to present this functionality to users. (It's unusual because it takes a bit of time to generate and the resulting file should maybe be encrypted.)

The PGP signature and IP evidence makes me pretty confident that Alaki_away is the original owner of the account, so I reset the account.

Quite some time ago the forum was behind a DDoS protection service, but this service had many failures, and the alternatives were either unbelievably expensive or too intrusive (ie. they'd break HTTPS's security, make things difficult for Tor users, etc.), so I decided to roll my own DDoS protection. This has gone fairly well so far, though my DDoS mitigation techniques haven't been tested by any particularly large attacks until now. (Small-scale DoS attacks are very common, and my mitigations handle them easily.)

Someone threatened to DDoS the forum if I didn't pay 10 BTC, and then shortly afterward there was a DDoS attack which took down the forum for a while. Needless to say, I will never pay this demand. For now, the attack has either stopped or been significantly reduced, but it might happen again in the near future. If there is another attack, I will try my best to mitigate it.

Yeah, that's fine. The issue seems to be that when there's a target="_blank" link, the browser considers the new window/tab to be a "child" of the original page. This is a holdover from an era when popup windows were commonly used for all sorts of things, and the "target" attribute was used to affect the child pop-ups of a website.

IIRC I did warn you about this in the past...


Having a few consecutive posts every now and then when you don't have a paid sig isn't a big deal, but PG/GG does it habitually. The issue with this is that it unfairly bumps topics (like bumping a topic more than once per 24 hours) and it spams "watchlist", "show unrelad posts since last visit", etc.

Previously, user-generated links would often open in a new window/tab. However, kcud_dab found out that there are security issues with this, so I removed it. You'll have to middle-click links if you want them to open in a new tab.

If people find this disruptive, I could add rel=noreferrer to some of the target=_blank links, but then referrer info would never be sent, which might be undesirable.
