It's a good idea, but I'm not sure how I would set that up. I'd need either one unique server IP per user or some method of segregating users so that you can't just pay the fee, find the IP address of the "pro" forum, and attack that.
I could use the CF API to whitelist IPs for a fee, but most people don't browse from a static IP. Maybe it's possible to use CF page rules to whitelist certain cookies; I'm not sure.

I'll see how things are in a month or two and think about it. Basically, the "ideal new user" should be able to easily and without any particular "merit farming" be able to far exceed the merit requirements; for them, activity should be the limiting factor. If this is not achievable, then I absolutely will make tweaks until that goal is reached. But it's too early to say at this point.
I did consider a 1-point requirement for Member when designing the system, but I thought it might be too easy. We'll see.

I decided that the previous allocation was too unfair in this area, so everyone with activity >= 775 got 500 more merit if they didn't already have 1000 merit (and also Lutpin). No extra sMerit, though.

Is there a function to the merit sources being hidden?
If there was some canonical list, then people would be posting: How to get merit Step 1. Go to the merit list at xyz. Step 2. Bug each of those people constantly until one of them relents and gives you merit If you pay attention, you'll get a pretty clear idea of who the active sources are. Forum staff also have access to the list.

Please try to merit posts that other people might find interesting, since top-merited posts show up on the stats.

I added more. By no means is the set of merit sources or their sMerit/month static. I will be adjusting it a lot as needed, especially in the beginning. I wouldn't be surprised if there are 100-200 sources in a year from now.

Last I heard, they've still only been able to maintain fewer than a dozen qubits for long enough to perform computations. You need around 1500 to attack Bitcoin keys. There are also well-known ways of doing asymmetric crypto using QC-secure symmetric primitives. See my article here, which is still correct a couple years after I wrote it: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Quantum_computing_and_BitcoinWhile it is something to keep in the back of our minds for 5 or 10 or more years in the future, I'm not worried about quantum computers at all right now.

I agree with this approach. I considered giving merit proportional to activity, but I decided not to because doing so would probably give far more undeserved merit than deserved merit in total. But undoubtedly some people got screwed by this, and if they have decent posts, by all means, give them the 250 or 500 merit that they need to rank-up.
I also agree with the idea of (free) "reviewer" topics in general, for finding high-quality posts that went unnoticed. Barcode_ created one in the Chinese section, as well.

It's a good list, but not really what I was looking for. I updated my post: If you want to be a merit source:
1. Be a somewhat established member. 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.
I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

I seriously considered this, but I decided that it'd be just too disruptive. The desire to minimize carrying over flaws of the activity system are why I gave everyone the minimum merit to avoid being demoted, though.

That's partially why I sped up work on merit. I don't agree with using the trust system for pure spam; that's not what it was designed for.

I expect merit to tend toward scarcity as time goes on, but when it gets too scarce, I'll have to add more merit sources or give the existing sources more free sMerit. The goal will be to avoid people from feeling like getting merit is virtually impossible, but also to avoid a scenario where everyone is always maxing out the limits because 1 merit is ~worthless. Each source has a different limit per 30 days. The current average is 185, and in total up to 8125 merit could be created per month. Actually I have been legendary for a few weeks already now. Strange you see my rank as hero.
edit; I see my rank as hero as well now, I ranked down? edit2; Seems to be back to normal.
You were oscillating between Hero and Legendary; I fixed it.

How has "Last of the V8s" managed to give you merit on that post? I get You cannot merit that post when I try That's caused by you ignoring the board it's in... I may fix this eventually, but not soon.
