Heh... I'm trying to delve into the recesses of my mind to find the drawer where I keep my high school Latin. And yet, part of me thinks that for a group that doesn't seem to know the difference between "except" and "accept", or between "affect" and "effect", this thread might just be a tad precious, no?

Piper67,

if it is as you say then such a group should not use Latin Wink

spiccioli.

I agree... in the true decentralised nature of bitcoin, I think we should come up with the same phrase in Esperanto!

How about something more modern, and designed with the idea of better human-computer communication - Lojban!

A Symantec security researcher is reporting the discovery of a trojan that infects and adds users' computers to a processing swarm designed to brute force decrypt the bitcoin electronic currency system, generating as much as $150.00 per infected computer every month.

" brute force decrypt the bitcoin electronic currency system" Huh?
" decrypt the bitcoin algorithms in the background" Huh?

What a ridiculous way to describe it.
It's tempting to assume deliberate FUD - but I guess this is just incompetent journalism.

2123  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: $80 Android Phone Sells Like Hotcakes in Kenya on: August 19, 2011, 12:45:36 PM
If this is true, it's pretty darn exciting. Given that there's already a wonderful Android bitcoin client, there's nothing standing in the way of Kenyan's adopting the coin widely. They're already using the M-PESA system which has been amazing well-received. They're used to banking with their phone, and sending money to each other.

What language do they speak there, and is there a version of the Bitcoin page in that language?

According to the cia factbook: English (official), Kiswahili (official), numerous indigenous languages

So.. looks ripe for it I guess!

I wonder why it's taking so long for bitbills to get their ordering system back online?
There are numerous other solutions available now that appear easy enough to integrate.

It seems like a wasted opportunity not to have ordering back up during the bitcoin conference too.
I don't know if bitbills has anyone going to NY for it.. but even if they couldn't be there in person - they could surely find an agent in the community to run a stand and sell/evangelize them..

When did you order your Bitbills Bankcard?

2127  Economy / Speculation / Re: The great rally will begin at the next slight drop on: August 19, 2011, 04:38:16 AM
Oh.. and another reason the conference may do nothing for bitcoin - is that it might happen to coincide with some other news that grabs the general public's attention more.
Even if the the big stories are economics related..  any bitcoin news developments could get lost in the noise.
2128  Economy / Speculation / Re: The great rally will begin at the next slight drop on: August 18, 2011, 04:38:02 PM
I don't think the existing 'BelieverDollars' are yet numerous enough to produce some sustained sizeable rally..  and if they are, I don't suspect they'd need some special dippy signal to decide "it's on".  They might just start with a sneaky drift up which gathers momentum.

While I do have a bullish hunch that the long term future of Bitcoin will involve significantly higher valuations..  it *could* be many years or decades away.
There might also be a wide chasm of low prices due to government crackdowns in between now and then.

I'm hopeful however that things like the upcoming conference giving publicity, and the sheer pace of software infrastructure development around bitcoin,
may allow it to 'outrun' serious corporate or government intervention.

It's entirely possible that relatively sudden scale and popularity will give rise to a range of growing pains.... thefts/outages/losses/slowdowns as systems struggle to cope.
Not just the 3rd party services around bitcoin - but the network and core software itself if growth occurs too fast for the development team to handle. That sort of growth is an 'outside' chance in my mind though.

Anyway.. yes.. I dare to 'expect' an overall rise of a couple of dollars over the next 2 weeks if there is a reasonable amount of positive and interesting media attention arising from the conference.
(This is despite my previous attempts to spot rough price correlations with various positive and negative news stories - and finding bitcoin charts usually have a way of surprising and confounding)

If there are some really good news stories on major networks  - plus some announcements about software releases (especially mobile related) and/or things like bitcoinATMs being placed in prime spots.. then I'd even dare hope for a 'great rally' of up to about $20.

It will either go up and down the next time it goes up or down.

...but possibly faster or slower than we expect.

That's boldly numeric of you..    Sounds like you're bullish on the possibility of some zig-zagging occurring on the charts!

2132  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How does a transfer work ? on: August 18, 2011, 02:43:00 PM
There is no ledger, there are just transactions with inputs and outputs.  Your bitcoin balance is the sum of all the outputs to addresses that you own that haven't yet been used as input to another transaction.

I think a comma is helpful to disambiguate that last sentence. (though It's still potentially confusing)
"Your bitcoin balance is the sum of all the outputs to addresses that you own, that haven't yet been used as input to another transaction."

I wouldn't know how to phrase it any better.. but for someone trying to get to grips with the concepts it could read as either:

Your bitcoin balance is the sum of all the outputs to:  "addresses that you own that haven't yet been used as input to another transaction"   (wrong interp)
vs
Your bitcoin balance is the sum of all the outputs (to addresses that you own) that haven't yet been used as input to another transaction  (correct interp)

2 BTC BitcoinForum.net Promotion

If you make a non-spam post on www.bitcoinforums.net sometime this month (August), you will automatically be eligible for a randomly-given prize of 2 BTC.  Multiple posts will give you multiple entries into the drawing.  This is a promotion to help get more people using the bitcoinforums.net forum.

Well I can understand why just straight out appealing to people's self-interest might seem to be a winning tactic around here.. but call me crazy.. it also comes across as just another tacky-crappy marketing ploy for something I don't know if I care about.

Why not appeal to people's interest in the overall expansion/success of the bitcoin community and explain how bitcoinforums.net fits into that..  and then offer the financial reward/prize thing as a sweetener on top of that?   At the moment it's all largely-illusory sweetener but no dessert.

What is bitcoinforum.net for? What problem is it solving? Is it just competition for bitcointalk.org?
Is this intended to split the community somehow? Along what lines? Is that good anyway?

2136  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: i0 Coin Issues on: August 17, 2011, 10:07:02 PM
I think I just found another issue.  Seems big to me, maybe not others...

I have my client set to NOT pay transaction fees.

I sent 167.98375486 i0c to the exchange very shortly after receiving them into my wallet (maybe 20 confirmations), but it looks like the client rounded it off to 5 decimal places and took the remaining and tacked it on as a txn fee. or for all of the conspiracy theorists, maybe it is rounding and sending the remainder to another address a la Office Space. In bitcoin, when you send a transaction too early (not enough confirms) it prompts you that it needs a transaction fee. I was never prompted.  I know losing .00000486 i0c is nothing, but if everyone is losing them times thousands of transactions, it starts to smell like some bullshit.

Code:
Status: 3865 confirmations
Date: 8/16/2011 23:29
Debit: -167.98375
Transaction fee: -0.00000486
Net amount: -167.98375486

Since the exchange is down, I can't login to see if I was credited the full amount or the rounded amount, but I bet it is the rounded amount... I only have 1 transaction in my client that includes i0cents, so I can't really check to see if other transactions were similar.

Check your clients to see if you have similar circumstances.

You can set it in these *coin clients all you want to not pay fee it will still take it if you have more than amount sent for balance it does it automatically or if sending all of balance refuse to send until you pay fee it is in I repeat all of them I have ever used and that would be five so far..

The client program ripping off bitdust is the most unconscionable act.
It would be tolerable if the user interface warned what was happening and gave an option to cancel etc.
As it stands, I think it's a strong seed for mistrust in the program and hurts the image of bitcoin and bitcoin-based systems.
It doesn't matter that the amount is small - it throws off calculations.

It's pretty pointless to moan about it here in an obscure fork thread though I guess.

Bitcoin mining with Trojan.Badminer
http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/bitcoin-mining-trojanbadminer

"Now we are seeing another new Trojan on the bitcoin mining trail, which we are calling Trojan.Badminer. Instead of packing a pick axe and shovel like previous bitcoin mining Trojans, this makes use of heavy machinery to do its job. That way the flow of bitcoins can be mined much faster than before."

Symantec go into a bit of detail about bitcoin mining here
- making the case that we may be on the verge of seeing botnets carrying out bitcoin mining "on an industrial scale"

It hits slashdot - despite the apparent general distaste for bitcoin stories there.

2139  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are we about to witness something epic? on: August 17, 2011, 07:13:48 AM
Also a few million is very little of a unit to have in circulation, any relatively small movement on an international scale can have a massive impact on price.

Actually there are 21,000,000 x 1,000,000,000. Think about it  Wink
Your saying each coin can be divided a billion times? Can you please explain to me how this will look in price tags? Will there be some type of symbol to signify all the zeros that you will have to deal with if this currency every takes off?

What will a 0.000000025 price tag look like is my question?

It would look like "25 Satoshi."

It's not yet divisible to 9DP - only 8
so it's 21,000,000 x 100,000,000

So that would be 2.5 Satoshi      -  not currently possible in the bitcoin client (or on the network I think)
