2261  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Scammer - a proposed resource for scam reports. on: September 02, 2019, 07:51:25 AM

Here's a simpler option: help newbies and those participating in deals understand the due diligence steps they should perform before transacting.

To a certain extent I agree, but I often see new members arriving and asking for help after they had been scammed. As I have the name anyway, I thought it would be handy to use it to see if I could help a few people. If it saves a couple of people from losing money it will be worth it in my opinion. As I stated, I wasn't looking for continuity of membership, but a way to promote Bitcoin and Bitcoin Talk.
2262  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Scammer - a proposed resource for scam reports. on: September 01, 2019, 05:06:24 PM
I was really looking for some feedback on the potential project. If I decide to use Drupal, it will be Drupal 8, and that contains a lot of great improvements to the CMS. Probably the best way to handle the site would be to have a few people that were able to create articles, and a general membership that could comment on the article. Anti-spam and moderation would require some thought.

Pointing out that Bitcoin is one of the safest ways to store wealth, provided one observes basic precautions, would help Bitcoin in my opinion. Also, if one can help a new crypto recruit to avoid being scammed, then one could prevent him from abandoning cypto as a result of his losses.

At this stage, I'm interested in any suggestions to use the name to help the forum. Failing that, I'll just put it up for sale on Sedo or some similar site.
2263  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Suspected Bitcoin mining scam on: September 01, 2019, 09:00:17 AM
Anybody who asks for more money to release funds in your account is a scammer. In the unlikely event that they need a payment, they should deduct it from the balance in your account.
2264  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Scammer - a proposed resource for scam reports. on: September 01, 2019, 06:30:59 AM
The idea was to warn people who aren't members of Bitcoin Talk. I think we should be trying to improve the reputation of Bitcoin. Many people still seem to think it is a tool for drug dealers, extortionists, and terrorists.  I think we should try to point out that other transferable assets have a greater use in illegal activities.

I've already got the domain name, and I can provide the hosting, so I thought it would be better to put it to some use rather than leaving it on a sales page. If it can be used to recruit some new members to Bitcoin Talk before they are scammed, then it will be serving a useful purpose.

Coinbase Pro will accept faster payments for amounts over £10,000

I tried my credit card with coinbase, but Visa won't allow payments

I think the same £10k limit applies to Coin Base for debit payment, and faster payments has been removed for now.

It may still be possible to send them a cheque, but I haven't tried this.

I started a thread here - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5180510.0
2267  Bitcoin / Project Development / Bitcoin Scammer - a proposed resource for scam reports. on: August 31, 2019, 03:42:36 PM
Following on from my post in this thread - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5180337.0 , I'd be intersted to hear if any members would be interested in working on a site like this. Considering the post by JackG, I think Drupal might be the best content management system, and this would allow for moderated comments by the general public. Whilst Bitcoin Talk would be the best place for this information, many new crypto buyers may be put off by the complexity of the forum. A simple scam reference directory could help them to determine their crypto purchases, and could also act as a recruiting ground for Bitcoin Talk.

I would be grateful for comments about this project proposal, and if there is any interest, then I will install Drupal on the domain as a test.
2268  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Should I spend my cash, or save it? on: August 31, 2019, 02:46:13 PM
Most people in the UK didn't want to join the European Union. They were led to believe that it was just a trading group and not a loss of sovereignty.

It's extremely complex though, because the City of London actually controls the EU, and this is why so many of the political elite are trying to block the exit. The City of London is now effectively a different country, and it is the base for the Anglophone empire that replaced to old British Empire.
2269  Other / Meta / Re: List of scammers who attack theymos on: August 31, 2019, 02:30:02 PM
That's just a simple page that I put together as a name marker. If you wanted to create a scammer information site, then you would probably need to use drupal or SMF to build the site. I'd be happy to provide the domain name, hosting and pay any software licence fees. I'd prbably use Direct Admin though, as cPanel is being a bit silly with it's fees. Hosting would probably be in Dallas, so the site would need to be US legal.

I probably won't have time to do any research or posting, but it would probably be better if two or three of the more knowledgeable members here handled that. The aim of the site should be to improve the name and reputation of Bitcoin, help people to avoid scams, frauds and thieves, and to encourage those with an interest in crypto to join Bitcoin Talk.
2270  Economy / Speculation / Re: Sell now at 9.5K or use emergency cash? on: August 31, 2019, 08:01:45 AM
We need more information. New cars can create more problems and expense. Buying a used car can take you down another repair route.

What is the problems with your current car? I don't know what a trigger belt is, but if you mean a cam belt, and your engine has an interference head, then you may have bent the valves. The only reason that I can think of for broken piston rings is piston slap, and the second breakage may have resulted from an incorrect repair the first time. It sounds like a high mileage engine, and I would consider an engine swop from a crashed car. It isn't as hard as it sounds if you go for the purchase of the same model of engine.
2271  Other / Off-topic / Re: steemit and issues on voting on: August 31, 2019, 07:45:15 AM
I haven't looked at Dtube - it's something I need to do over the next few months.

I gave up on Steemit several months ago when I started receiving demands for money to upvote my content. I decided it was an elaborate ponzi, and it is some time since I visited my account and reviewed it. I used to own the domain SteemRewards.com, but I let that drop several months ago following my disillusionment with Steem. I guess I should have tried to sell it. Smiley
2272  Other / Meta / Likes and dislikes in a forum on: August 31, 2019, 07:36:14 AM

@jetty, does this come with stock smf (the out-of-the-box kind)? I saw it on fittotalk and a couple of your forums and I'm wondering if that's an extension or comes with smf?

It's a standard plugin. I added it as a bit of fun, rather like the shop and the currency. Fit to Talk is a fairly friendly site fortunately, so there isn't the bitching and flaming that happens here. If Theymos ever decided to add the feature, I would suggest that he only allows the likes, and doesn't include the dislikes. I've seen that on several sites, and it does seem to work without too much trouble.
2273  Other / Serious discussion / Should I spend my cash, or save it? on: August 31, 2019, 07:28:38 AM
In this thread I want to talk about the purchase of everyday items, and improvements to one's lifestyle. I believe in Bitcoin, gold and silver for the preservation of wealth, and I'm also acquiring scrap copper to sell when an economic recovery eventually arrives. Id like to discuss the advantages or otherwise of purchasing new cars, houses or other lifestyle items.

Cars are an interesting topic, and I believe that it is netter to own an older car that one can service oneself in an emergency. I'm also buying some tools to convert a van into a mobile home, as I believe one will have a better lifestyle if one is outside the expanding conurbations. I'm not too keen on electric power for cars either. An older diesel that is capable of being powered by vegetable oil is a good backup in case there is an oil crisis.

I'm starting to switch to solar power for the electrical equipment in the van. Photovoltaic cells are improving all the time, and the costs are dropping, but I think it important to achieve some offgrid capabilities as soon as possible. I've also purchased a wood burner for cooking and heating.

I'm interested in purchasing a small woodland, but I'm not sure if prices will increase or fall over the next couple of years. My feeling is that the best option is to purchase Bitcoin now. My instinct is that it will increase in value far more than freehold woodland. As a UK resident, I have more of a problem than most when considering fiat savings. It is almost certain that we will leave the EU, and this will result in a massive boost for the UK economy. This will result in an increase in the value of Sterling, but this is only really relevant if one is investing abroad.

So what do you guys think is the best plan for the next couple of years?

I own Bitcoin scammer - does anyone want to put an anti-scam site on it?
2275  Other / Meta / Re: Hey theymos, can i get your attention for a minute. on: August 30, 2019, 10:15:43 AM
I'm not sure that I understand your post. Membership of Bitcoin Talk is a privilege that helps one to build one's knowledge of Bitcoin and crypto-currencies, and to interact with intelligent members with an appreciation of the changes that virtual assets in the changing world economies. The ability to award merits is not really a part of this, although being a merit source is a benefit that allows one to encourage the building of a strong and vibrant community.

I'm sorry if you feel that a shortage of sMerits will lead to a reduction of your reading of threads. Merit gaining and awarding is not a primary reason for BT activity. If you feel that you have a problem with insufficient merit awarding, then perhaps you could increase your standards for the awarding of merits.
2276  Other / Meta / Re: Merit awarding as an alternative to posting. on: August 30, 2019, 09:32:51 AM
Likes and dislikes can often start flame wars. Also, I find that begging for likes on YouTube is annoying. Steemit's demands for payment for likes (upvotes) are even worse in my opinion.
2277  Other / Meta / Merit awarding as an alternative to posting. on: August 30, 2019, 09:15:01 AM
I was discussing the awarding of merits with another member recently, and he made me aware that we have both started to award merits as an alternative to posting a reply in a thread. If you agree with a poster, but don't have much to add to the point he has made, do you think it is good practice to award merits without quoting and posting an agreement? It will certainly keep the thread cleaner and easier to read, but it may be difficult for those seeking to build a post count to restrain themselves.
2278  Other / Meta / Keep Bitcoin as a product for the people on: August 30, 2019, 09:01:44 AM
Congrats. I did try to help members from The Philippines in the Fit to Talk forum, but that seems to have died down a lot. I'll try to rebuild that over the next few months. Members from The Philippines, Venezuela and similar countries are important for the future of Bitcoin in my opinion. We need to ensure that the distribution of Bitcoin wealth is retained amongst the people of the world, and not just kept by the bankers.
2279  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos vs Roger Ver (1:0) on: August 30, 2019, 08:47:11 AM
Well there is no such thing as bad publicity, and hopefully all this stupidity will increase awareness of Bitcoin Talk, and maybe we will get an increase in membership. Maybe Theymos could create a history board - Oh Wait! isn't that the archive. Smiley
2280  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why "Anti-Vaxxers" Are So HATED, And So CRITICAL To Saving Western Civilization on: August 30, 2019, 07:40:28 AM
If vaccines really worked, then the vaccinated shouldn't worry about the habits of other people. The anti-vaccinators have concerns about the social costs resulting from Vaccine damaged kids, and they are saddened when they see the cripples and mentally deficient kids that have been created by the vaccination policy. You know there is major political corruption surrounding vaccines, when you become aware that the law was changed to protect the Pharma companies against having to pay compensation for the widespread damage they cause.
