1661  Other / Meta / Re: Where to start computer hardware discussion threads. on: March 11, 2020, 04:54:26 PM
I won't go into my history in computing again Smiley

This thread was be about upgrading an HP core i5 notebook. I'm really going to switch from win 10 to Linux, and it is preparatory to that. Maybe I'll post in serious discussion, as I've bought a 3Tb drive because Google said the max I could use is 2 Tb. Smiley

6 glyphs in the title triggers my scam warning. I still don't understand why posters debase their topics by using them.
1663  Other / Meta / Where to start computer hardware discussion threads. on: March 11, 2020, 11:23:43 AM
I've just ordered a 3Tb HDD to replace the drive in my notebook. I would have liked to open a discussion thread about it before ordering, as Tosh seems to have a variety of HDDs, and I'm not sure of the differences. It isn't really a Bitcoin topic, as I will move my blockchain onto an external SSD. Is there somewhere where one can start these discussions, and not find them racing off the index page as a result of more general threads?
1664  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Bottled water claims. on: March 11, 2020, 10:31:53 AM
Well it's getting screwed up because they are allowing the environmentally destructive fracking to operate. The good news about the oil price war is that it could kill fracking. That will screw up banking though, as fracking was never designed to be profitable.
1665  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Huawei without Google on: March 11, 2020, 10:26:29 AM
I want Huawei because I'm being told that I can't have it. Smiley

I think that Huawei produces great products at competitive prices, and I resent being told that I can;t use their products because I have to install a load of crappy intrusive apps that Google keeps pushing at me, and that I have to spend time trying to disable.
1666  Other / Meta / Re: Who is in charge of removing this post? on: March 11, 2020, 08:20:08 AM
I guess the good news for you is that your post got increased publicity. People who otherwise wouldn't have seen it have read it, and reflected on your points. This is one of the results from sanctions and censorship - it creates an increased awareness of the issues that you are trying to suppress.
1667  Other / Serious discussion / Bottled water claims. on: March 11, 2020, 07:53:06 AM
Here is a quote fromthe label on the Buxton mineral water bottle in front of me.
Quote
Buxton mineral water journeys over 5,000 years until it is forced up through a mile of British rock and bottled at an untouched artesian source.

I don't have a problem with the water as an alternative to my morning coffee, but, come on, do they really expect me to believe that it is over 5,000 years old. What happens when it runs out then - will they start fracking for old water. Smiley
1668  Other / Off-topic / Re: Mobile assets will do well with crypto on: March 11, 2020, 07:27:05 AM
I agree, and that is why I'm keeping my old motor cycles, but you are still vulnerable to theft if people realise where they are stored.
1669  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Scrap metal prices are down on: March 11, 2020, 07:24:00 AM
I've got a load of old 3 pence pieces - I think they are 98% silver. I'm going to hang onto them, as I believe silver is seriously undervalued at the moment. The metals I am keeping are -

Gold - it's a traditiinal store of value
Silver - another traditional store of value
Copper - the price is down at the moment, but I'm hoping it will recover next year.
Lead - another one for recovery. I'm keeping this because of the volume/weight ratio.

I might keep a couple of old motor cycles, but much of my agricultural collection can go - so who wants an old Allen scythe?  I got several sacks of old mother boards, hard drives and other computer bits. I was going to write an article about hunting through old drive for Bitcoin wallets, so maybe I should do that. I was also going to use the neodymium magnets frm the hard drives to make a magnetic fishing raft, but that doesn't find gold and silver coins of course.
1670  Other / Politics & Society / Current problems causing infrastructure failure. on: March 11, 2020, 06:58:38 AM
This morning has brought home to me the fragility of out current social structure. I'm in a McDonalds next to an industrial estate in Portsmouth. There are two problems right now. The water pressure has failed, so there are no hot drink or fizzy ones. All they have are bottled drinks. The restaurant has some erly morning business from dog walkers and tradesmen, but they usually want coffee of shakes. The other problem is that neither WiFi channel is connecting.  I'm fairly adaptable, so I am drinking bottled water, and using the WiFi provided by the retail park administration, but a lot of customers are walking out without making a purchase. The Waitrose supermarket in Waterlooville is closing, with the loss of 125 jobs. That is another major retail shop abandoning the city centres. My 85-year old friend is self-isolating, and not allowing anyone to visit her house.

I did anticipate some of this, and that is why I provided myself with an alternative mobile lifestyle, but I'm not sure I appreciated the full extent of the changes that are on the way. Privatisation has led to poor and expensive infrastructure maintenance, and government money is being squandered on projects like the HS2 train, and this will just boost London, and weaken the rest of the country in my opinion. Then we have the stupid rush to electric vehicles, and we can't afford the infrastructure to ensure they are viable. Most tests seem to show that self-driving card are not suitable for British roads, so we can expect more deaths and problems from these id they ever become popular.

So what can we do? It looks as if Boris Johnson has an appreciation of future currency problems, so he is talking about passing laws to ensure that banks make cash available to the public for purchases. This is contrary to the general attitude of world governments, who want to move to a cashless economy. No sign of the restoration of water pressure, and there is a guaranteed response time of less than 4 hours. That doesn't mean that they will be able to fix it though.

Update - Water restored at 8am, but no explanation as to the cause of the failure.
1671  Other / Serious discussion / Scrap metal prices are down on: March 10, 2020, 11:59:57 AM
I've got 8 garages full of "stuff", and I need to get rid of at least half of it. The price of light iron has halved at the scrap yards, but I really need to catch the better weather to dispose of stuff. I'm tempted to advertise dome of the collectable on the boards here, but do people really want old British coins or ration books? Is the collectable section most useful for selling crypto related objects?
1672  Other / Off-topic / The Kakapo - a fat flightless parrot on: March 10, 2020, 07:33:36 AM
The Kakapo is a fat flightless parrot that lives in New Zealand. It has to climb trees to get to its favourite nuts. It seems to be extremely intelligent ( for a bird), and here are a couple of videos to illustrate this.

Has anybody actually died from the virus? All the reports I read seem to indicate they have died from secondary infections, or underlying health problems, and most of those seem to have been caused by hospitalisation, or bad medical treatment.
1674  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Huawei without Google on: March 09, 2020, 12:09:46 PM
There is a big difference between collecting my data in an attempt to manipulate my behaviour for commercial gain, and collecting my data to check on my political activities. My objection is over the way Google and Microsoft mess with my settings and activities in an attempt to scratch a few extra billion pounds.
1675  Economy / Lending / Re: Crypto loans and trading on: March 08, 2020, 07:38:14 PM
Don't borrow money to trade/speculate in crypto. There have been too many reports of suicides as a result of this.

The other point is that if you were any good, then you could pyramid your speculations, and then you wouldn't need to borrow money. This is particularly true as you say that you have a good success record.

1677  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: I need help understanding what trans people feel.... on: March 08, 2020, 12:27:52 PM
Well I've just filled in a "tell us how we did" page on the McDonalds web site. Towards the end they asked me about my sex.I wanted to say "very satisfying thank you", but that wasn't an option. Instead, I have to select from a few tick boxes. The first were Male, Female and Binary, and there were a few others such as self-determined or something like that. I always thought that binary was something to do with digits, but I guess this isn't the meaning in this case. Smiley
1678  Other / Meta / Re: Top sections to get merits. on: March 08, 2020, 11:56:03 AM
The best way to get merit is to avoid posting about getting it. I might start putting posters who start merit hunting threads like these on ignore.

One of the most successful investors ( I can't remember which one ) was once asked  to what he attributed his success. His reply was " selling too soon".
