2361  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proposal: Bitcoin Conference San Francisco - March 3rd-4th 2012 on: February 28, 2012, 05:23:12 AM
There are apparently only a few people in the SF Bay Area into Bitcoin so I guess it’s a no go. I guess that makes sense since there aren’t many tech savvy type people around here or maybe there are just fewer patsies. Undecided

I think a SF convention would be quite successful.  Three months of notice is good, but not always possible.  I am on the east coast and I would consider attending if the dates were good.
2362  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proposal: Bitcoin Conference San Francisco - March 3rd-4th 2012 on: February 28, 2012, 04:32:57 AM
First, nobody I've spoken with has been able to confirm that the San Antonio conference is actually happening.

The San Antonio conference is happening.  See it's thread.
2363  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Possible witcoin theft [ Intersango/Bitcoincconsultancy on notice] on: February 28, 2012, 03:01:16 AM
I can not comment on your title of theft as I do not have enough information (like from the other parties involved) but the title where you call them witcoins makes little sense to people not familiar with your site.

Simply put it is bitcoins you are referring to, not witcoins and you might want to change the title to make that clear.

How many BTC are we talking about?
2366  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: 5850 and 5970 on: February 27, 2012, 09:29:24 PM

Wait.. wat? OMG 3/6 is the launch date? aCk.

There is no hard release date that I know of and I have looked pretty wide for it.  AMD has said 1'st quarter 2012, so the quarter ends on the 31'st of March.  I am looking forward to getting one myself, or a pair of 7950's with 1.5gb ram (for less money then the current 3gb model).

It would be cool if 3/6 was it, I will be ready to purchase!
2367  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Unions Explained on: February 27, 2012, 05:02:43 AM
The biggest problem with unions is not the collective bargaining for salaries.   It is the imposition of rules regulating the hiring and mostly firing of employees.  They make employers (public and private) keep dead weight, unresponsive employees that know they do not have to push hard and can not be fired even for some pretty major infractions.
2368  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Paypal is becoming the 'Moral Police' for the Internet on: February 26, 2012, 10:44:24 PM
Ebay is also acting as the moral police.  They do not allow me to sell empty boxes (that are clearly labeled as empty), they have canceled auctions for VINTAGE computers with shareware on them because of suspected copyright violations, canceled auctions for ORGINAL windows disks and finally they have closed auctions for not using their catalog (for example hard drives) even when the catalog contained inaccurate information.   Of course ebay and paypal are one company.

2369  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTB 5970s in bulk - NOT SINGLES please on: February 26, 2012, 05:30:27 PM
Prepared to pay up to $300 US + shipping for 5970s in bulk

Cheers

I am prepared to pay $320 and will buy singles.  Smiley

The going rate on ebay is over $450.  I sold a bunch of them at $410 and while it started slow, had far more inquiries in the end then boards I had.

So yes..... good luck with that.
2370  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Separating Bitcoin's Legitimate Business's on: February 26, 2012, 03:41:25 AM
This is a major problem in my opinion. It's a problem in with traditional businesses too. Some countries address it by requiring minimum capitalization to start a business. (China, Denmark)

Because the barrier of entry to start a bitcoin business is so low, it is really easy for scammers to open "businesses". But that's only part of the problem. The low barrier of entry allows businesses, even those with good intentions, to enter the market undercapitalized and underinsured. With minimal investment in a business, the owner really doesn't have much to loose if they want to fall off the face of the earth when the going gets tough unfortunately.

Another problem is lack of insurance options. When I started my site, I looked into ways I could possibly insure my it. Unfortunately, the closest thing I could find was digital intrusion insurance, but the policies were only concerned with damage to systems and loss of privacy information, not loss of digital assets, like bitcoin.

Good points. One thing is though the "low" barrier of entry turns into a "commitment" when you fork over 100 btc.  It raises the stakes a tad higher weeding out anyone who is looking to scam people.  As for your second point, no reason why you couldn't be insured against lost of bitcoin also. The other way around.  Meaning you can file that you've lost money due to a hack and collect against a "pool" of money.

Good suggestions and thoughts btw: love btcbuckets!

I started my bitcoin business small, and if I had to put out 100 BTC to some agency that kept it (not just a deposit) I would not have probably started.  On top of that, 100 BTC is not a huge barrier to a true scammer if he was going to start taking deposits for underpriced 7990's for example.

The biggest thing that separates the scammers from the real businesses is time and physical addresses.
2371  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: transfer from tradehill to cryptoxchange on: February 25, 2012, 03:40:11 PM
You should look for a code that they may have sent you.   That code (cryptoxchange coupon??) you enter in the section for that on cryptoxchange and it will then credit the account.  Check your email and your cryptoxchange messages.

I am basing the above on the transfers I have done with them from crypto to mtgox but I assume it works in the same way.
2372  Economy / Goods / Re: QR code coffee cup at cryptoanarchy.com $13.99 payable in BTC 99 cent us shippin on: February 24, 2012, 03:47:29 AM

2373  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Cryptoxchange's System Sucks? or Just Me? on: February 22, 2012, 05:06:22 AM
I can give a definite +1 to Cryptoxchange in terms of support.  They've been awesome according to my experience thus far.
I also have to give Cryptoxchange a +1 as well.

There have been some hickups for me, mostly caused by myself.  They seem to respond to problems quickly.
2374  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ever tipped in a restaurant in BTC? on: February 21, 2012, 02:41:43 AM
I suggest we don't piss off waitstaff like this. They hardly have enough time to themselves but now you're going to ask them to go onto Mt. Gox and online shopping?

The hands of one pissed off waitress at the end of her shift. Only if she had enough time to spend those cocaine-containing greenbacks. But if everybody tipped her with bitcoins, she could easily stay home and shop online in her undies, hoping all the while that Aaron Keown is watching from outside her windows.

I love that picture.

I think that if you want to introduce people to bitcoin, give a normal tip and give a bonus in bitcoin.  Be sure to let them know how to get started, like with weusecoins.com or something like that.
2375  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Thermal Paste - Conductivity >1.22W/m.k on: February 20, 2012, 07:32:49 PM
1. buy 100 packs for $9
2. sell for $2.25, including $1 international shipping
 Undecided

Is a dollar profit too much to ask?  Maybe rag on the quality but not on the price.

2376  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [270GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: February 20, 2012, 06:40:47 PM
I have read the wiki but still do not understand how I get namecoins as well as bitcoins with this pool. What do I do to get namecoins?
2377  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ever tipped in a restaurant in BTC? on: February 20, 2012, 01:53:05 PM

I may rib you a lot, Atlas, but I do admire you. Perhaps clarify your position if you feel I've missed something with my response.

2378  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Cryptoxchange - order matching error? on: February 20, 2012, 05:06:24 AM
Trades stay open that are matched.  I try buying an existing sell and nothing happens even after 30 mins.

If bots are the problem, turn off access until it is fixed.
2379  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Network hash just spiked about 50% on: February 20, 2012, 12:10:26 AM
These threads appeared every difficulty change for a while but we went a bit without them.

The rate did not rise dramatically. It is just the formula used to display the hash rate.
