2421  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Hillary Clinton to Announce 2016 Run for President on Sunday on: April 18, 2015, 05:45:50 PM
It's really flabbergasting to me that anyone could actually be excited about Hillary. I guess you might see her as the lesser of two evils, but how could anyone really think that she's especially good? I've seen several people with "I'm ready for Hillary!" stickers on their cars, and I know some people who really like her. It boggles the mind.

You'd think that having to choose between another Bush or another Clinton (this is a likely scenario) would cause the American people to try voting for at third party or something. But it wouldn't. Democracy just doesn't work. The best possible outcome is that Rand Paul gets elected, but even he isn't perfect, and he is pretty unlikely to become president.

It'd be pretty hilarious of Walker got the Republican nomination. He has basically zero personality and not much of a platform. There's not much about him a Republican can complain about because he doesn't do/say much, but he'd be crushed by Hillary, and who knows what he would do if he somehow managed to win the presidency.
2422  Other / Off-topic / Re: 2 more activity and I will become a Sr. Member. on: April 18, 2015, 04:48:12 AM
Gratz on the rank. One thing that has always confused me is that I seem to have equal Activity and Post counts. Not sure why but I guess I'm lucky to be 1:1.

That happens when you post very consistently, but less than once per day on average. Most people get 14 activity points every 2 weeks because they post a lot. But if you post less than 14 times in a fortnight (but at least once), then you get only [the number of posts in that fortnight], and the remainder is "banked": you can get it by posting at any time in the future. So every time you post, your activity will also increase by 1 until you're used all of your banked activity.

You have 1274 banked activity points, more than all but 113 users. A lot of people wish they were you. Smiley

For fun, here are users with a lot of "unused" activity. Such users often write especially high-quality posts.

2423  Other / Meta / Re: BFL subpoena on: April 17, 2015, 01:49:42 PM
Kind of scary how they asked for all PM's mentioning BFL. I recall a while ago theymos discussed the idea of adding javascript PM encryption as a way to protect the forum from unreasonable searches and seizures. It isn't the best way to do it, as of course theymos could modify the javascript at anytime (he could even potentially be compelled to do so by law), but modifying the javascript is detectable, and messages that were sent and viewed with the unmodified javascript are still safe. It adds an extra layer of security, which should be sufficient for most PM's. It would also be very useful should BitcoinTalk's database ever get compromised... again. Anyone who has something really secret to tell should use something like PGP instead of this however.

I think we should consider adding this to the new forum software.

The other big problem with that is how to handle private keys. If the private key is generated from your password, for example, then forgetting your password would mean losing all of your PMs. Most people aren't prepared for this.

This is pretty much the whole forum, right? Cheesy

It was 2.3% of topics. (This still amounted to ~5 GB of text.)
2424  Other / Meta / BFL subpoena on: April 17, 2015, 05:36:49 AM
I recently received a subpoena related to a case against BFL (Case No. 14-CV-2159-KHV-JPO). I had to release all database info on a few employees/ex-employees of BFL (including their PMs), plus a complete copy of every thread in which anyone mentioned BFL or in which a BFL employee participated. (It was a huge hassle to put all of this info together.) The subpoena originally demanded all PMs that even mentioned BFL, which is ridiculous, but I managed to get this part eliminated.

If a PM of yours was released due to this, then I already sent you a PM about it.

I don't think that I'm going to send PMs about deleted posts that were released. 3196 users had deleted posts released, and I don't really want to send that many PMs when almost no one would care. I feel like people should have basically no expectation of privacy for something that they posted publicly anyway.

I also released all "report to moderator" reports involving or mentioning BFL. I don't think that these are very sensitive, so I'm not going to send out PMs about these.
2425  Other / Meta / Re: Changing inaccurate factoids on: April 17, 2015, 03:12:52 AM
Isn't the source of the block headers and Merkle branches for SPV the Stratum servers?

Hmm, I thought that Electrum connected to the Bitcoin network, but it looks like you're right.

I guess calling it a "hybrid" wallet is therefore maybe not accurate. However, most SPV clients (all clients based on BitcoinJ) only ever connect to nodes returned by the centralized DNS seeds, and there are fewer DNS seeds than Stratum servers. So Electrum is more decentralized, and they are also not vulnerable to Sybil attacks, which the DNS seeds are not smart enough to provide much protection against. So I still think that Electrum's way of doing things is more secure than, say, Bitcoin Wallet for Android's.

Privacy-wise, SPV is probably better in normal circumstances because you don't have to give anyone a list of your addresses. (Though sending a peer a Bloom filter still gives them info about your addresses that they might be able to use to trace you.)
2426  Other / Meta / Re: Changing inaccurate factoids on: April 16, 2015, 08:08:21 PM
Those informational factoids were mostly written by me. That one is correct. Electrum uses both Stratum servers and SPV, so if these sources of information disagree then Electrum should warn the user (though I don't know how good it actually is about this). This makes it stronger than either method alone.

2@1.7

I won't accept your bid.

- You are not actually in HK.
- Your service is very likely a HYIP scam. This is an OK form of gambling if you're honest about it, but you're not.
- Your charity is fake. The images on your Facebook page are taken from elsewhere and (badly) photoshopped.

2431  Other / Meta / Re: Please No (Hard) Drug Avatars on: April 12, 2015, 08:34:54 AM
It is unfortunate that any avatar causes negative feelings, but I don't want to censor avatars that are offensive/disturbing to only a small minority of forum members. Many people will be negatively affected by many different images, and while banning each individual thing might not be a big deal, banning them all would make the avatar rules uncomfortably restrictive, I think.
2432  Other / Meta / Re: An exact/estimate reason why Bitcointalk doesn't load without VPN for me? on: April 11, 2015, 08:35:29 PM
When bitcointalk.org isn't working, run traceroute bitcointalk.org (Linux) or tracert bitcointalk.org (Windows) using the not-working connection. Post the result here. If you don't want your IP address to be public, completely remove any lines containing your IP address.
2433  Other / Meta / Re: An exact/estimate reason why Bitcointalk doesn't load without VPN for me? on: April 11, 2015, 03:44:10 PM
If it works perfectly via 3G but not via your normal ISP then it is far more likely to be due to IP blocking.

It might also indicate that his normal ISP is having temporary problems connecting to the forum's ISP.

I guess these problems started long after we switched to the anti-DDoS service, and I haven't received any other complaints about this, so I feel like it's somewhat unlikely to be the anti-DDoS service.

@theymos - I've noticed when pinging since the IP change there is an "non-specific reverse DNS" entry:

Fixed, thanks. (The change will need time to propagate.)
2434  Other / Meta / Re: An exact/estimate reason why Bitcointalk doesn't load without VPN for me? on: April 11, 2015, 02:27:36 PM
Maybe you're doing something that the anti-DDoS service is blocking. I haven't had any other reports of this, so you're probably doing something quite unusual. It might be something else, too.
2435  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Account-feature stable? on: April 10, 2015, 08:33:52 PM
I like the accounts feature. It is probably slower than a real database (though I haven't benchmarked it), but it promotes good practices and it's very easy to use once you know how it works. However, it is designed mainly for the simple case of accepting payments, and that's probably all you should use it for. Don't use it as the basis of any sort of EWallet. Don't allow users to automatically withdraw BTC from your site if you're using accounts (unless you're a Bitcoin expert and you're super careful).

Bitcointalk.org uses accounts for the registration fee. Each user gets a unique account "forumuser_$UID" (so I'd be "forumuser_35"). I get their address with getaccountaddress forumuser_$user and check their balance with getbalance forumuser_$user $minconf. Bitcointalk.org's core Bitcoin handling code is just 82 lines, and it uses no libraries (JSON-RPC handling is 34 of these lines).

AFAIK accounts don't scale well enough for huge services to use them, but most sites should be fine. Keep in mind that you should not store much money on a live server, so you should sweep all money to an offline wallet frequently or do some sort of watch-only wallet setup. Also, you must backup wallet.dat at least as often as you backup your database, since it will contain the important user<->address database.

Yes. Make sure it doesn't access the forum more than once per second on average, though.

Something like that will be in the new software.

There's a hidden feature in the current forum that allows you to filter "unread posts since last visit" by board:

IMO they should just end the Foundation. It seems that they have very little money left and their reputation is (justifiably or not) trashed. Why even go to the trouble of rebuilding it?

They accomplished quite a bit over the years. They paid Gavin and several other developers, they funded bitcoin.org, they produced some good lobbying results, etc. The people who worked toward these good results shouldn't feel ashamed to "call it a day" now. I was an annual member for the first two years of the Foundation (currently I'm not a member), and I'm not particularly disappointed in how my money was apparently used.

bigbitmine and El Emperador's avatars are fine IMO.

1) Is nudity allowed? If so, to what extreme? To a non nsfw tag?

No.

Quote
2) Is NSFL allowed? [NSFL = Not Safe For Life]

No.

Quote
3) Is other adult content allowed?

Maybe.

If I receive (or anticipate receiving) several complaints about something, it's probably too much.

Quote
4) Are paid avatar campaigns allowed?

Yes.

5) Is copyright content allowed? How should copyright holders request deletion of infringing content?

You are not allowed to infringe copyright, of course. I have no way of knowing whether you have a license to use particular images, and it's additionally sometimes difficult to determine whether fair use applies, so I will not be proactively removing possibly-infringing images. The DMCA process is used.

6) Is racial / sexist content allowed?

Probably.

7) Is there a limit on 'annoyingness'?

Animation is not allowed, so I feel like it'd be difficult to create an avatar that is sufficiently annoying that I'd want to remove it.

8 ) Are 'imitation' avatars allowed? Ie wearing avatars of specific companies to give the false impression of representation.

Copying someone's avatar in order to impersonate them or cause confusion is not allowed. But if you both use some generic picture of some famous person or something, that's probably not going to count, and using elements of someone's avatar for purposes other than impersonation will probably be allowed. Same for companies.

9) How should users report those with infringing avatars?

DMCA takedown notices or any other legal thing must be emailed to me. For other issues, post about it in Meta.
