Is there a thread which tracks merit-begging PM spam, or appropriate for that purpose?  Out of the numerous merit-related threads, I haven’t seen one where that would be on-topic; but I don’t want to create yet another, if an appropriate thread exists.
Slightly off-topic: I use "Report To Admin" for PM-spam (bottom-right under each PM).

This.
I believe sending unsolicited/spammy PMs can result in temp-ban (somebody correct me if I'm wrong), asking for undeserved merit is, or should be, another offence (similarly to asking for positive trust rating).

Reporting such PMs is probably way better than red-tagging. Or you could do both.

Obviously it all depends on the context of the PM.

well i dont think i would want to steal 16k btc... someone who got his btc taken is not going to forget about it.

also is it possible for a US citizen just to vanish to china forever when they have just stolen that much money from clients?

I'm pretty sure there's no law enforcement cooperation on the line US-China, so as long he has a clean record in China and is there legally, he's not going to get extradited.

The difficult part for him would be to get a right to permanent residency, otherwise he would have to travel from country to country. He could of course bribe his way to citizenship, but you need to know the right people for that, and there's a greater chance for him to end up dead in a ditch and having "his" bitcoins stolen. White American on the run with huge amount of bitcoins on him is a wet dream of every crook.

He was nominated by Trump so he probably wants to grab America by the pussy and is a closet pervert. He supports crypto so he might like using crypto to purchase child porn on the hidden web. It’s really too early to form an opinion of him.

wtf am I reading?

Have you jumped to the conclusion that he's a paedophile just because he was nominated by Trump and knows a bit about cryptos?

Projection (Psychological)

1) An unconscious self-defence mechanism characterised by a person unconsciously attributing their own issues onto someone or something else as a form of delusion and denial.

2) A way to blame others for your own negative thoughts by repressing them and then attributing them to someone else. Due to the sorrowful nature of delusion and denial it is very difficult for the target to be able to clarify the reality of the situation.

3) A way to transfer guilt for your own thoughts, emotions and actions onto another as a way of not admitting your guilt to yourself.

...
Merit sales, transfers to aliases, back-and-forth trading, etc. are not much of an issue. All illegitimate merit will decay, and will account for a tiny and very expensive fraction of the total merit economy. It's basically a rounding error; fight it where convenient, but waste no sleep over it.

2607  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin holders being taxed in India on: February 07, 2018, 12:58:29 PM

So basically India's tax department is posting out reminders that trading profits are subject to tax and that profit on crypto-trading in not an exemption.
Hardly a news.
2608  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: As long as gold exists, now so will Bitcoin on: February 07, 2018, 12:44:37 PM
As long as Bitcoin can be shown to be a hedge against gold, there will always be people who buy it.

You fail to explain the logic. If gold is a hedge to stocks/bonds, than stocks/bonds are a hedge to gold. So you already have a hedge.
Investors may be spicing-up their portfolios with cryptos, but that doesn't mean that existence of gold guarantees the existence of Bitcoin.
Plus, in your own portfolio-split example, you didn't put "Bitcoin" but "cryptocurrency". These are not synonyms. Even if gold, in some magic way, warrants the demand for cryptos, it doesn't mean that Bitcoin will survive, it can be replaced with other coin.

60% equities
30% bonds
6% gold
3% cryptocurrency

You're missing 1%.
2609  Other / Meta / Re: Exclusive section for Bitcoin holders? on: February 07, 2018, 12:13:32 PM
...
That would be one part. However, a place for Bitcoin holders would still be productive in other facets. Lack of FUD, and you can be assured to be discussing with like minded people. While it is not practical to donate 1BTC anymore, there should be a special section for those who HAVE that amount.

Sounds like you want a circle-jerking safe space where people pat each other on the backs and say how great it is to hold.

You could always start a self-moderated quality thread for holders in "Serious discussion" section, set participation requirements (signed message from address with min X btc) and see whether there's enough demand to keep such thread alive.
2610  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: An open letter to Paul Vernon aka "Big Vern" - Cryptsy on: February 06, 2018, 08:28:17 PM
Damn, that's a touching story. I feel for you OP, I was no stranger to Cryptsy, back in the days it was the most popular and trusted exchange. Luckily, gave up on trading before the exit scam.

I don't get one thing - you're saying that you were holding WDC + later other altcoins, and then you're referring to your 98 bitcoins that were stolen from you. Is this the value (in btc) of your alts at that time?

Quote
Today I received my so long waited check of 10,387.93 $, representing my loss of 98 BTC on Cryptsy.

How was this figure derived? Did they just liquidate all that was left of Cryptsy and divided the proceedings to creditors proportionally, or is this calculated at BTC/USD rate at the time?

2611  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is now banned in JAMAICA on: February 06, 2018, 07:43:47 PM
Bitcoin is getting banned in jamaica heard recent news
...

Care to share your source(s)? Google brings me nothing. You didn't make this up, did you?

Back in August Bank of Jamaica seemed rather positive about cryptocurrencies, so I find it hard to believe.

11 times out of 10 a central bank 'banning' Bitcoin truly means 'please be careful. We're not going to cover your arses' when people can be bothered to read the 2-3 actual sentences what they wrote...

"[insert Country] BANS BITCOIN!" generates more clicks + people like to simplify things.

I can take myself as an example: without patting on my own back too much, I believe I have contributed some value in most of my 130+ posts, yet was only able to gain 10 merits (and even that was just through a holder who "spread the love"). What would be my incentive now to reward a high quality post and give up some of the few merits I have earned?

Perhaps a system in which one has a limited number of merit points to grant in a certain time period, without directly affecting ones own merits, might create the right incentive?

Your merit score won't decrease when you send merits to someone. The merits you can send are called "sMerits" (sendable merits).
It's all explained in the first post.

To check your "sMerit" balance, click on "+Merit" on any post and you'll see something like this:

Quote
You have received a total of 1030 merit. This is what determines your forum rank. You typically cannot lose this merit. You have XXX sendable merit (sMerit) which you can send to other people. There is no point in hoarding sMerit; keeping it yourself does not benefit you, and we reserve the right to decay unused sMerit in the future.
2613  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: February 05, 2018, 01:06:31 PM
I don't know why some normal comments/topics by high rank member get contributing very much merit ? For new members like me , it's very hard to achieve merit by someone even we have valuable topics

Link me to few of your valuable topics and I'll +Merit them.

Protip: You can't.

2614  Economy / Services / Re: 🚀[Signature Campaign] 🚀LEGOLAS Exchange 200 Members Required | [CFNP] on: February 05, 2018, 12:14:17 PM
Besides anyone can do what you did and change sig for 5 mins while doing a web archive capture - doesn't mean you wore the signature all week either just means you were wearing it the time the snapshot was taken very easy to spoof

Sure, you could do that and risk:
1- getting kicked out of your new campaign (new manager will see your post proving wearing old sig when you were supposed to wear new one)
2- not getting paid for old campaign
3- getting tagged as a scammer if you get caught.

So good luck with that.

...
Exactly your "proof" relies on honesty just as much as my proof

you didn't provide any proof. All you say is "trust me".

Will you roll-forward posts from the first week for those who joined today (and didn't make min 30 by 7th)?

Hi Wapinter.

I am also leaving to join a new campaign. I did not change my signature until after this week ended I hope I can still be entitled to week 4 payment

And how is he supposed to know when have you changed your sig? You either wait for the final post count or provide proof that you wore right signature at the end of the period.

Since the final week has come to an end, I'm changing my signature to apply for a spot in other campaign.

Wapinter - thanks for the great work, I'll leave you a deserved, positive trust rating.

My final post count (including this post): 4215

I'll edit this post shortly with proof of me wearing signature/avatar

Seize your chance and buy the dip, have patience and you will be rewarded once Asian money flows back in. Asia is the biggest Bitcoin market.

Yeah... about that - China just announced that they will be blocking access to all the exchanges, local and international. So expect most of Chinese who still hold crypto to dump their holdings.

On top of that, major US banks + other (i.e. Lloyds Banking group, UK) are banning credit card crypto purchases (you can still use debit cards though), as apparently it's too risky for the customers. Weird logic, customers are free to get drunk go into massive debt by spending it all on whores & booze, but they can't buy bitcoins, as the value may drop.
