Unrepeatable... maybe there will be btctalk poker tournaments in the future (and there should be), but I doubt that they will attract the "old team" and be able to awaken the same enthusiasm in the players, everyone gave something to make it more interesting, more or less!
(...)
I'm looking forward to some "poker competition" on the forum. We definitely need more "poker" related stuff... Smiley

I think after running 4 series they decided to do the next one on a different site that offered some guaranteed prizes: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5284992.msg55470852#msg55470852

And it looks like this is still ongoing, here's the fresh thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5437680.0

It would be great if the forum tournament returned to SwC - the oldest-running bitcoin poker site. Maybe if they sponsored some prizes it could happen again. Or SwC could run an alternative tournament for bitcointalk. It's not like there can be only one.

Freebitco's Personal Stats no more have the field "Net Balance"?

Do you mean net balance from the dice game? If so, it's still there under "MULTIPLY BTC WINNINGS".
And if you want to calculate your total income from all games/referrals/freerolls net of any losses - just add the 'Total payouts' and your current balance and subtract the 'Total deposits'.
1623  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: More Awareness needed, 100$ or Bitcoin??? on: March 10, 2023, 09:29:09 PM
and also why ask KIDS ? why not mature people ? maybe they will at least have second thought on what to choose.

Mature people are more likely to have heard at least a little bit about Bitcoin to know it's probably worth more than $100. And if they didn't know, they'd probably make some level-headed response (e.g. "I'm not sure what Bitcoin is so I'll take $100"), which wouldn't be as entertaining as two ignorant teenage girls.

And as posted above, it might have taken a while for that guy to find anyone choosing $100 over 1bitcoin.
1624  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I managed to convince my senior dad to invest in BTC on: March 09, 2023, 10:21:16 PM
Apart from bitcoin, all that remains is gambling and scams.

How is say Litecoin a scam and Bitcoin is not? Is LTC a scam just by virtue of not being Bitcoin?

Whatsoever he might had taught his dad is good but he needed to make the whole process simple and very plain since is day is a old papa

People age differently, some remain intellectually sharp even in the advanced age, look at Joe Biden... just kidding, look at Warren Buffet (92y.o.) or Charlie Munger (99y.o.). At the same time, IQ and attention span are on steady decline among younger generations. As evidenced by many posts in this very thread.

But yeah, at certain age being a long-term holder is kind of pointless.

In my country it is all about race, everywhere you go...and if you dig a little bit deeper, you will find that it is not about the race, but rather about the money.

Not just money, but maybe even more about power.

I am no racist, because I have several black friends and even black family members...

See? You wrote nothing wrong and yet you instantly felt like you need to go into defensive mode and explain yourself to not be accused of racism. Even despite being on an anonymous forum. That's power.

You will have a pointer when you disable signatures, avatars for a year, only then you can really know, though there is no point doing that, because *we already know.

We can have a glimpse of what would the forum be like without paid-for signatures in the Serious Discussion/Ivory Tower where signatures are disabled. Not completely dead but way less active than the rest of the forum.
Then there's the Wall Observer mega-thread with even >100 posts a day, often memes and shitposts despite also having disabled signatures. So it's not like there's a clear division between paid-for posters and serious contributors.

1627  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: More Awareness needed, 100$ or Bitcoin??? on: March 09, 2023, 09:35:15 PM
More adoption is expected in the nearest years, but as you had rightly iterated, there can't be 100% adoption of the coin. Even gold that was introduced over 4000BC ago still has around $12.250T market capitalization. This amount is way lower than the money circulating around the world.

I haven't seen any stats on this, but I'd be guessing that there already are more people holding crypto as an investment than people holding gold as an investment (excluding jewelry), at least that's my observation from my social circles. If that's true, that's kind of crazy how fast Bitcoin got it's popularity.

Also, what many don't think about is that Bitcoin has its peg, which means that there is a limit to its circulation and only a few fractions of the world's population could hold the coin at a time.

That's irrelevant really. Bitcoin is easily divisible, and if needed to be more decimal places could be added, so it's not like there will be a shortage of bitcoin to hold. Sure not everyone can hold 1 or even 0.1 of a coin, but that's just a unit of measure that means almost nothing, apart from having a psychological factor.
1628  Economy / Gambling / Re: Gambler Loses 1.4 million USD in a bet with lower than 1.01 odds! on: March 09, 2023, 09:24:55 PM
Usually losses by the odds of 1.01 is comparatively less. But it's nothing but bad luck and he had to lose from that particular bet.

I wouldn't blame everything on bad luck. If you never bet and decide to make a one-time only bet with 99% chance of winning, then you can call this bad luck. But I'll be guessing that unfortunate guy made similar low-payout-high-chance bets in the past, felt invincible, and pushed it a bit too far. If you keep risking money like that over and over again, the loss is inevitable.

That's a bold move from Kraken and I wish them all the best. I consider them one of the good players in the crypto space.
But I don't think it'll be easy and they will likely face a lot of hoops on the way. The current fat cats in the banking sector have a powerful lobby and they're not very keen on any newcomers.

1631  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Bitcoin having effect on the ongoing war on: March 08, 2023, 10:55:01 PM
According to Ukrainian deputy digital minister Alex Bornyakov, the country has been using crypto to purchase fighting essentials like bulletproof vest, drones and other military gadgets/equipment.

https://bitcoinist.com/crypto-accepted-by-60-of-ukraine-weapons-suppliers/

I have my doubts about whether this is true. Sure, I can imagine that any supplier would be happy to accept any sort of payment that suits the buyer if they're making huge orders, but why would they choose crypto if they have no trouble converting to fiat?
And lets do not forget that Ukraine was ranked very low in the least corrupt countries rank, so there's a big chance that a portion of those donations landed in some private wallets rather than going to suppliers.
1632  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I managed to convince my senior dad to invest in BTC on: March 08, 2023, 10:35:27 PM
Did you manage to convince your dads or other older people in your family to buy BTC?

Why would you do that though? The point of investing is to build up wealth to enjoy at the later stage of your life. But if you're already at the late stage of life, investing for the long term makes little sense. There's a time to chase money and there's a time to slow down and relax.

That's unless you want to build generational wealth to pass down your bloodline, but that kind of thinking is rather rare for the baby boomer generation. And even if, at the age of ~80 your kids are probably mature enough to manage the family capital themselves.

So sure, there's nothing wrong in introducing older people to Bitcoin, but making them buy it as a long-term hold is not a great idea.

And i am guessing everyone even remotely connected to the event are not eligible to make any bets on it. Just like in boxing etc,

I don't think events like the Oscars would be subject to the same type of restrictions on betting as the sports are, which, on top of the common laws, have to comply with the rules of their respective federations/associations etc

Betting on an event that you're directly involved in probably goes against most of the betting sites' terms and conditions, and could expose you to fraud allegations if you're cheating, but I don't think that would be regulated in any special way.
1634  Local / Polski / Re: Pochodzenie środków - BTC za kopanie w multipoolu dawno temu + hard forki. on: March 08, 2023, 09:50:57 PM
IMHO to drugie.

WTF I made a pie and wanted to participate but I found that I have 0 merit and 12 activity !!!! (((( These limits are strange and its not fair

Cheer up, the true reward is the pie itself and the fun you had while making it.

Also, if you actually made it, you could've just posted the photos anyway, maybe someone would reward you with some merit points for the effort. Sounds better than complaining.
1636  Bitcoin / Press / [2023-03-07] FT: Can bitcoin hedge inflation, and other questions to which the.. on: March 07, 2023, 11:24:14 PM
Hot off the press, a short article from the Financial Times. Nothing new here, just FT not being very fond of crypto again. The author included a few interesting links in the text, which are pretty interesting.

Can bitcoin hedge inflation, and other questions to which the answer is no

https://www.ft.com/content/f1ec9df0-091f-4e13-b7b7-cb53df3c9478

Quote
Paris-based Amundi can appear a bit bipolar about crypto. Last February it was reportedly investigating how to sell NFTs to clients while warning them about the “potentially destabilising systemic risk” of stablecoins. Former chief investment officer Pascal Blanqué called bitcoin a “farce”; his successor Vincent Mortier is more amenable:

“If inflation remains above central banks’ targets, bitcoin’s limited supply may start to attract more attention,” write Mortier and strategist Tristan Perrier:

While bitcoin spectacularly failed to protect investors against galloping inflation in 2021-22, this was a period of dramatic rises in policy and market interest rates that pressured all asset classes. If inflation is high, but not rising, nominal interest rates will also likely stop climbing and may even fall a little. This is a much more favourable environment for an asset whose supply is finite and that has a long duration in essence, as its main attraction is its future potential rather than its current status.

No no. I don't get upset about it anymore and meanwhile I see something like that very calmly. As I said before, I just ignore people like that or don't participate in the chat. It was different when I was younger, but I've gotten older and more mature. Either way, I find such bad behavior not good and avoid it if possible.  Cheesy

Good for you then. Life's too short to waste energy and stress over internet chats.
In a sense, all those chat trolls have a good purpose, they help others develop mental strength. Once you truly stop caring, all the insults can almost become funny and enjoyable.

How about our winners of the Bitcointalk Poker Series, which we ran together with you, get paid their prizes, years later? That would be something...

Context? It reads as if they didn't pay out the prizes or something, but don't see any negative trust ratings, so maybe I'm reading it wrong.

1638  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Betting strategy question on: March 07, 2023, 10:34:22 PM
That could be true too as gamblers still find it exciting to play slot games even if we already know it’s clearly a luck-based game, maybe because they still anticipate for a good win by following some special patterns they reserved for slot games. And to think that it could work for some gamblers, I guess it’s not bad too if we can also try making it. After all, gambling is gambling, it’s outcome will always be unpredicted, and it’s what keep us from coming back in gambling.

I'm still not completely sure about that. If there really is a pattern (even though it doesn't guarantee winning bets) and if the pattern is recognized, of course there will be more people who will try it. If it is true that there is a chance to win, wouldn't there be more chances to win (from all of gambler who is trying the pattern? If more win then lose, of course this will make the gambling ecosystem more unstable. The more wins, the more the balance will be drained from the dealer. If this happens, there will not be many providers who can get a lot of profit and tend to go bankrupt because of this pattern. CMIIW

You guys are massively overthinking the issue. If we're talking about playing slot games in physical casinos, this is massively dominated by elderly, retired, and often lonely people who are simply looking for some enjoyment.

For a sad video proof, click the image:

If you have elderly parents, remember to call and visit as often as you can.
1639  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: More Awareness needed, 100$ or Bitcoin??? on: March 07, 2023, 09:47:18 PM
According to some estimations, there are around 420 million crypto currency users over the world, which equals to nearly 0.06% of the world population. Thus, we can't expect all people to know about Bitcoin and crypto. I know this percentage could differ from one country to another, but the result is the same everywhere. Not all people know about crypto. That might look strange to us as we have been in crypto for years and got used to it. However, Bitcoin still has a long path and some hurdles to overcome before it becomes a global currency.

You will never achieve 100% public awareness. That will never happen unless in some weird scenario when bitcoin becomes the official global currency (it won't). Essentially only people who are at least a little bit interested in either technology or investing will have a decent grasp of crypto - others simply don't care and never will.

Gold has been around since the dawn of civilisation and still only a small percent of the population would know a rough price per ounce.

though the remaining gambling site that he owned Bitvest is still having this issues.

What issues do you mean specifically?
I don't think that this particular platform is in existence again because since lightlord been the owner of this platform, had issues of perming participants who works it is when I noticed that did gambling websites is not proactive the way it is before, making bet with this company now is of the owners risk the way i see things

The signature campaign payment issue was quite a while ago and I was asking whether there are any ongoing issues with BitVest (not 777coin).
There was one guy somewhere above reporting a withdrawal delay but was advised to contact customer service and he hasn't posted since, so hopefully it was all sorted. Other than that, I don't recall anyone reporting any actual issues. Yet, people keep coming in with a narrative suggesting BitVest is in some sort of big trouble without stating anything concrete.
LL choosing not to engage on bitcointalk is not really an operational issue and their customer service seems to be working fine. For a small site like this, a hot wallet getting drained from time to time is inevitable as well. As long as it doesn't take an excessive amount of time to refill, that's fairly normal.
