2701  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 05, 2019, 01:37:35 PM
Flying over on a balloon doesn't count.

I was on real feet. My own too. I took the train from the airport. Had a cheese sandwich. Went back to the airport.
2702  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 05, 2019, 01:34:01 PM

I went to San Francisco for 15 minutes. I had a great time and left without turd slippers.
2703  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: People’s Bank of China Announces Test Program to Limit Cash Transactions on: December 05, 2019, 12:23:28 PM
But here is the question that I am going to ask all of you guys, especially those who are living in these Chinese provinces that are being mentioned. Do you agree with this or not?

No one who's given it a few seconds of thought should agree with it but it looks like hundreds of millions of Chinese folks have voluntarily gone cashless so won't care. I wonder if these provinces are rural or urban. If rural that could be a major pain.

Where I'm at cashlessness would be hopeless. 80% of my locality has no mobile signal. Paying with a card is often an adventure and just as often a complete no go as many of them are mobile signal only.

It also means I often can't do 2FA so getting into Paypal can be impossible and banks are now attempting to make every online card transaction the same. I'll have to leave my phone at the top of a building with a lightning rod poking into it.
2704  Economy / Economics / Re: Hi Excuse me Are currencies a "store of value on: December 05, 2019, 11:52:15 AM
I would say a store of value means it's something that can be obtained, parked and spent at a later time and be confident it'll still do the job and others will to take it off you without question.

In that scenario the dollar is an excellent store of value in the short term. In the same scenario crypto is not a good store of value. In six months it might not buy you a hand job from a midget in a bus station toilet. Or it might buy the bus station. That lack of predictability is the pisser.
2705  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Best way to use Binance anonymously? on: December 05, 2019, 11:42:47 AM
Binance does have a 'DEX' but there are some serious doubts about it actually being decentralized or not.

I thought it had been comprehensively proven that it wasn't. I think it is in theory non custodial but it can reverse transactions and block people.

I use a VPN for various things and it often breaks or I forget to use it. I guess if you have a VPN with a firewall that disconnects you when it disconnects you should be OK. Windscribe does this I presume others do.

I don't think any dex will be any use for intense trading.
2706  Economy / Economics / Re: Future without Middle men big way, but big Question? on: December 04, 2019, 06:04:13 PM
Uber, Aribnb and so on are middle men in disguise and more insidious too. They still take your money. They want to hide behind the saps they're exploiting to provide their services when they go wrong. It's a very attractive development for existing middle men. More profit. Less liability.

Other than that most of the world does not want decentralisation or care about it. They want someone else to do the work and complain to.
2707  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Overview of all airline & flight ticket sites that accept bitcoin on: December 04, 2019, 11:51:02 AM
Is travelbybit reliable?
Can someone tell me if bought the tickets and everything went well?

They've been around for a long time and have been involved with other established projects and businesses like Brisbane airport. I haven't used them myself but I'd say they're a more solid bet than most places. There are also some positive reviews beyond the usual crypto echo chambers.
2708  Economy / Speculation / Re: Can one have any expertise in Speculating? on: December 03, 2019, 10:58:04 PM
Speculating with little to no interest in everything that makes up the underlying thing you're speculating in sounds like a recipe for a bit of a balls up eventually. I'd rather build a deep seated and widespread basis to speculate from.

in my observation, natural born speculators have an intuitive sense about market psychology and sentiment. they are generally contrarians---they must be, since the crowd is usually wrong. i definitely improved as a trader when i learned to play against my own fearful/greedy tendencies, and against the prevailing market sentiment. (ie "buy when there is blood in the streets)

Very much this. You'd be vastly better off devoting your time to learning and mastering your own psychology. That counts for far more than most of the empty guff that happens here.
2709  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: After years in this space...I am now a BTC/ETH maximalist (Both are important) on: December 03, 2019, 09:34:33 PM
I respect your decision but shouldn't you think on anything else rather 2 crypto as a max out? Roll Eyes

You should extend your portfolio and diversify even further.
There are way more currencies that diserve a second chance.

Why? Almost all of them have achieved precisely fuck all and never will. That's not to say some of them won't some day rise enormously again but as actual propositions none of them have convinced anyone of a future beyond sitting on an exchange waiting for the occasional pump.

As for ETH, I think it's a guaranteed candidate for replacement by something that simply works in a way ETH never will. That's conditional on utility overtaking speculation which could be a very long way away.
2710  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [PSA] DOUBLE-SPENDING SCAM - WHY CONFIRMATIONS ARE IMPORTANT on: December 03, 2019, 09:23:17 PM
Double spending, attacks and roll backs are MUCH more relevant for alts, though of course people should remain vigilant for Bitcoin stuff too.

Some chains have now been attacked multiple times. Some have inadvertently forked themselves. I think people naturally assume that because you're unlikely to get raped that way using BTC the same applies for everything else and that is very definitely not the case.

There are plenty of revealing stats regarding this. For example I sold some BSV for LTC on Okex. Okex wouldn't let the LTC go until 200 BSV confirmations. That took several days of waiting and pretty much says it all in terms of how trusted and secure it is.
2711  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [2019-12-03] Bitfinex ENABLED the Lighning Network on their platform on: December 03, 2019, 09:16:56 PM
I'll be the first to admit I still haven't wrapped my head around this area.

How big a deal and how useful to the system will Bitfinex offering their node to people be? Will it benefit the network as a whole?

They seem to be listing it as LNX on the deposit page which is a bit weird.
2712  Economy / Economics / Re: Coinbase Holds a Whopping 966,230 Bitcoin ($7B) in Cold Wallet on: December 03, 2019, 02:42:04 PM
all digital currency that Coinbase holds online is insured' so that means hot wallets only which is 2% of all funds. For all the rest you're in their hands entirely.

And I wonder whether their policy would actually pay out for any of that 2%.
If all the coins held by Coinbase is insured then it is a great idea that the rest of the exchanges should follow as the security of exchanges are a major concern and when the government legalize these exchange i expect them to insure all the assets and all the exchanges should be forced to enforce that rule and if that happens then the traders can trust keeping the funds in the exchanges even if we are not trading.

Pay closer attention. 98% of their coins are not insured and it'll probably be impossible to obtain insurance for the cold stuff. If they could they no doubt would.
2713  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-11-27] One Reason People Aren’t Paying With Bitcoin: Taxes on: December 03, 2019, 01:09:22 AM
I don't buy this oft-repeated explanation.

It's definitely the case for me and I'm sure it's the same for others who've been around.

I'm well aware of the piece of tat I'm buying now coming back to haunt me at a much higher price. I only buy stuff with BTC that I know will enrich my life for the foreseeable future no matter what the price will do.

I've got piece of shit laptop sleeves that broke the moment I tried to zip them up that now cost the equivalent of £250. Not doing that again. Even buying and replacing would still sting.

It's these nincompoops who wrote in 2015 about spending everything they had on their Steam library who must wander the streets punching themselves in the head and muttering to themselves. I warned 'em at the time.
2714  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [ koinde.com] The another alternative of localbitcoins.com is it safe to trade? on: December 03, 2019, 01:04:19 AM
I wonder what proportion of these threads are mindless promotion vs genuine question. I'm guessing it's going to be a ratio of about 95 to 1. Having said that newcomers seem to be extremely good at running straight into the arms of dogshit services.
2715  Economy / Economics / Re: Coinbase Holds a Whopping 966,230 Bitcoin ($7B) in Cold Wallet on: December 02, 2019, 09:55:48 PM
It's worth noting, while Massachusetts Bay denied Bitpay's claim and took the matter to court, the two ended up settling for an undisclosed amount.

Interesting. I thought they'd gotten a flat refusal. I can't believe any employee would be stupid enough to do what they did and I can't believe their system was open to that type of entry from an office drone computer but I know nothing about these things.

2716  Economy / Exchanges / Re: virwox End of Service: January 6, 2020 on: December 02, 2019, 08:53:23 PM
Maybe. I always thought in-game currencies were an interesting loophole. I tried to find a prohibition against dealing with them in Paypal's terms and came up empty handed.

You would've thought an in game currency would be the very definition of virtual currency, but then again I guess they're fully reversible, seizable and only come from one operation who can be abused on the phone rapidly.
2717  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Gift Off (gift card supplier in the UK & Europe) now accepting Bitcoin LN on: December 02, 2019, 08:36:05 PM
Unfortunately, the service was accepted using https://www.opennode.com/ (Bitpay Alt,) which means that the company does not want to deal directly with Bitcoin.

No way a company like that afford to not convert instantly. The money flies out as quickly as it comes in. They get their wee cut on the top of it.

I've used them plenty in the past and they've always been flawless. They do seem to gain and lose options fairly regularly though. They still don't have Amazon back but Bitrefill and Bitpay do.

A MUCH bigger deal is Bitfinex accepting it for deposits and withdrawals from tomorrow.
2718  Economy / Exchanges / Re: virwox End of Service: January 6, 2020 on: December 02, 2019, 08:26:06 PM
Is PayPal involved in this somehow?

PayPal has a lot of money and influence, and it is one of the services most threatened by bitcoin.
I believe they will try to close all exchange related services, or at least remove their support.

Looks like they lost it at the start of this year.

This is their current set up.

They don't seem to have given a reason but I can only assume the majority of their business was through Paypal and it gradually faded. All the same those other options should easily take up plenty of slack.

Saying that I have zero idea what Virwox is for beyond BTC. Maybe Linden dollars and the other obscurities have no demand any more.
2719  Economy / Exchanges / Re: virwox End of Service: January 6, 2020 on: December 02, 2019, 08:15:28 PM
I'm surprised this hasn't been picked up on more. Virwox is one of the oldest BTC related services still going. I know they lost Paypal for crypto quite some time ago but have no idea how they managed to keep Paypal on board for so long for anything they did. Looks to me like every aspect of their business went against their terms.

I've never used them but it's a shame to lose any portal especially one so storied.
2720  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 02, 2019, 08:05:14 PM
The problem will be when they are all headed for the exit at once..

In other words, 19k will be a tough bone..

The exact same thing was said about the return to $1000 after more than three long and hideous years. I've been reliably informed it continued on without much of a blip and actually did rather better than that.
