281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / bitcoin-qt.exe keeps crashing on: May 01, 2012, 03:08:48 AM
I'm on version 0.6.0.6-beta, Win7

I launch it and after a couple minutes it crashes.

In the client window is the error message:
EXCEPTION:22DbRunRecoveryException
DbEnv::txn_checkpoint: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery
C:\Program Files(x86)\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe in ThreadDumpAddress()

Another window pops up:
 Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

It complains that the app is crashing.

I reinstalled to 6.0.6, not quite sure what version I had before that.

There's also the unknowns of:  will it crash?  When cashing out, will the foreman be honest and send me my money?  Smiley

Don't get me wrong, I've thrown a little money in, but in 3 years, if it hasn't crashed, if I want to withdraw my (theoretical) $4 million dollars, that would be pretty tempting for the foreman, if he isn't honest, to suddenly disappear.

I'm hoping for honesty, and hoping it'll be around in 3 years. Smiley  Then I'm getting a new boat Wink

Danke schön!
Thank you very much!  Grin
284  Other / Off-topic / Shipping Gold question on: April 27, 2012, 08:13:40 PM
So I told my boss (and showed him) about a couple silver 1oz bars I bought with bitcoins.  He's curious but mostly neutral on bitcoins.  But that's not the point here.

I told him how I plan to one day purchase some gold bars as well, and he thought he read somewhere that owning physical gold bars was not permitted in the US?  Does anyone have any info about that?  Now obviously I know people are doing it, or places like coinabul wouldn't exist...

But my question is, since it undoubtedly goes through various scanners, is shipping gold something that will have you "marked" and then they start watching you?  Or does it depend on the amount?  So shipping a couple 1oz bars versus say 100 1oz bars?

Is shipping large quantities of gold (whatever "large" is) something that might get confiscated?  Now my boss has me worried to buy anything more than a gram. Smiley
285  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Anyone using BTC to buy Silver/Gold on Coinabul? on: April 27, 2012, 08:06:40 PM
I've used coinabul with no problems.  I probably had a question or two about shipping, but I got it in a reasonable time-frame.  I plan on using him again once I can afford more. Smiley

I had ordered two 1-troy oz bars, and they came sealed up and I was happy. Smiley
286  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: ideas for better cooling? on: April 27, 2012, 05:29:12 PM
Sounds like your thermal paste dried up.  I'd take off your HSF, clean it and your core off and reapply some Arctic Silver MX2 or MX4.

Where in Kansas are you?

Lawrence

and thanks for the tips, guys!  I'll bring some compressed air home with me tonight and try that.  I'll try weekly doses to see if it helps.
287  Bitcoin / Mining / ideas for better cooling? on: April 27, 2012, 03:42:44 AM
Ok, so I have a Corsair 300D case with the side taken off.  My 7970 is OC to 1200/600 and I'm consistently at 90-92 with 60-65% fan speed.  So right now I'm going to lower back to stock speeds, but would like to OC it again. Smiley  The case is standing "normal" and not on its side (I have cats, and where it is now they can't get into, but if I laid it on its side, I fear the worst!)

I can't afford a water cooling system yet, and this computer is in a room (my man-cave!) that doesn't get a lot of air movement (but in the basement).  I have space for fans on top if needed (eventually will be where I put a radiator).

Any ideas?  I thought about putting a fan up close... so should I look at blowing away the exhaust, or blowing room air into the case?

any other ideas?

A couple weeks ago it was hovering around 85 temps (OC), and like 50% fan, so I don't know what happened (other than it's heating up here in Kansas and we have our AC set at 74 in the house).  Not sure what ambient is in this room, but I think somewhere around there since I have my computer in here.

btw I'm using TriXX for my information/settings.
288  Economy / Gambling / Re: MMM-2011 hugest Ponzi scheme :: Bitcoins accepted on: April 26, 2012, 08:16:44 PM
Ok, let's play simple for now.  If I give you a bitcoin, what should I expect for a return in 1, 2, 3 months?  Right now I can only afford a bitcoin as "throw away" in case something goes horribly wrong.  I may put more in at later dates....  [edit: i saw numbers above, is it similar?  or do the returns depend upon the initial amount?]

Assuming it's as simple as you acting as my broker and I say "ok i'm ready to cash out now, here's my address" and then you send money (within the time period you mentioned).

So how easy is it to withdraw once you're done?

Can I throw a bitcoin in and withdraw my profits in a couple of months?  I'm lazy and just want easy returns.  What process do I do to deposit and then later retrieve my money? Smiley

Maybe someone should make some fake accounts and post about oggr and/or bitcoin at various times of the day... he can't be on 24/7 can he? Smiley
292  Economy / Speculation / Re: back to square one on: April 26, 2012, 02:17:31 PM
Another thing to add to your list is the recent release of blockchain.info's iPhone app.  I know Android already had an app, but the iPhone brings ease-of-use Bitcoin to a large demographic as well...!

Do you have a link (or name) for the iPhone app? I'm sure it's been mentioned elsewhere, but I want to make sure I get the "right" one. Smiley

I'm hoping people ignore/migrate from forum gold.. it seems to be the "standard currency" by which items are now valued.  I'm hoping bitcoin overtakes that instead, and instead becomes a mix value of dollars/bitcoins (as maybe valued on the auction house). Smiley

That said I had registered at ogrr, and it seems like they have a pretty good system for transferring money (for trades) covered here:

 https://ogrr.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1299

All-in-all, I'm excited because I hated forum gold, and refused to partake in it due to the reasons of the owner basically being a dick and controlling everything (a sort of mini-paypal or mini-ebay type philosophy of screw the users, take their money).

Long live ogrr. Smiley

There will probably be stragglers trying to buy/sell forum gold, so I have no doubts that it will still exist for some time as people look to get away from it, maybe buying/selling on the side, but the only one will win that fight is njaguar.

295  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2012-04-25 Slashdot.org Bitcoin Mining Startup Gets $500k In Venture Capital on: April 25, 2012, 08:43:00 PM
I like that bitcoins are entering mainstream more, and this might help increase btc value... but now I'm going to have to watch that site (or other threads related to it) in case I decide to play a free game somewhere and keep tabs which games are going to hijack my video card.

I have mixed emotions about this.  They need to make it more visible about what's happening before you play the game.

Kluge you are right.  I use the FedEx shipping service but I submit the parcel through a high-value courier.  They seal the package and insure it and handle customs for me.  There would be a long paper trail produced by a courier that has an enormous amount of experience transporting jewelry and other high-value parcels like gold bullion.  G4S Securicor is the courier by the way.

That being said- would I prefer someone pay with bitcoin or bank transfer?  Yes.  In any industry that deals with high-value merchandise bitcoin can be a great tool.  I'm not a hard guy to get along with and if an issue arises with a client they are generally pretty simple to resolve.  Often Paypal and credit cards just create loopholes for scammers instead of the "protection" that they claim to offer.

Thank you Nyaaan, I agree it's very nice.  I haven't seen a better one before or since.  It's not easy to put a price on something that would be so difficult to replace.

I can vouch for tiptopgemdotcom.  I've bought a couple gemstones from him already.  I posted a thread about it in Off-Topic. Smiley
297  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How much do you pay for power? on: April 25, 2012, 03:30:11 PM

Plus applicable adjustments and surcharges.

Summer Period Rate
Energy Charge
For the months of June through September:
$0.057743 per kWh for the first 500 kWh

Here in Lawrence, KS:

For the months of October through May:
$0.057743 per kWh for the first 500 kWh
$0.057743 per kWh for the next 400 kWh
$0.045896 per kWh for all additional kWh

For the months of June through September:
$0.057743 per kWh for the first 500 kWh
$0.057743 per kWh for the next 400 kWh
$0.071091 per kWh for all additional kWh

So my worst-case is $.60 a day to run my 7970, if I calculate that right.  But I suck at power calculations.  I always miss a decimal point or something.

Actually, I don't care.
