PM sent... cheers.
302  Other / Meta / Re: [POLL] should we use more "report to moderator" clicks? on: July 05, 2011, 03:13:53 AM
My first reaction was to report your post to a moderator. That's just my style of humour, but then thought don't want to create extra work for someone just for a joke.

I've reported 3 or 4 for being blatant spam.

Not being a moderator, I don't know how inundated they are with requests, but if they openly asked for more spam reports I'd probably click it more often to help out.

Still not sure that I understand your attitude regarding $3 vs $20, doesn't the ratio 20/3 remain the same even if the price goes to $7000 ? i.e. if you bought e.g. 200 bitcoins at $3 each then in dollar amount you would have $7000x200=$1,400,000, but if you buy at $20 each then you would have $7000x30=$210,000

I think what he's saying is this:

Let's say you were to buy exactly 100 btc...

@ $3 each you'd be spending $300
@ $20 each you'd be spending $2000

Now let's say they go to $7000 each... your 100 bitcoins are now worth $700,000, so who cares if you initially spent $300 or $2000 on them?

But you'd be more likely to buy $x worth of Bitcoin.

If you bought $3000 worth of Bitcoin at $3 you'd have 1000 BTC.
If you bought $3000 worth of Bitcoin at $20 you'd have 150 BTC.

At $7000 a coin:

If you spent $3 a coin, you'd cash out for $7 million.
If you spent $20 a coin, you'd cash out for $1.05 million.

I agree that's more likely... I was just trying to offer an explanation that matched Phillip's post, so people might see where he's coming from.

The sheer awfulness of trying to get small amounts money in and out of China is what got me interested in Bitcoin.

Likewise with South Africa, really strict limits on international transactions there.

The only one I can think of is by having trusted parties managing the money, thus when a trusted party confirms the money has been sent, you can be sure you'll receive a payment.

MY-BIT-COIN-DOT-COM

Um, he said 'trusted'.
Why don't you trust MyBitcoin? I have used them for a while and they've been fine, most of my BTC is also held by them. They also offer a great payment gateway for merchants.

Because they never returned a 10 btc over payment. It either went to the merchant, or it went to mybitcoin.com... both are claiming it went to the other. I'm inclined to believe the merchant.

In addition, it took more than 3 weeks to even get back a response from mybitcoin.com to tell me they weren't going to help.
307  Economy / Goods / Re: What store would you like added to spendbitcoins.com next? on: July 04, 2011, 10:23:13 AM
I'm not sure what Sydney-siders use, but http://umart.com.au is like the 'Newegg' of South-East Queensland.

Thanks for the great tips guys, I think the honest answer is I need an easy way out. Being unemployed (and unemployable i guess) for the past couple years has taken it's toll. I'm not saying this is a "get quick rich" scheme but I'm looking at any option now to make any kind of money to topple myself over until something happens.

What did you do for work previously?

What would you like to do for work in the future?
310  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: AlertPay - Liberty Reserve swap ? on: July 04, 2011, 07:48:03 AM
I used to use this one: https://xchanger.org/

Although you need to get verified if you want to go from AP->LR (no need to be verified for LR->AP).

Also, I've asked them a few weeks ago about adding bitcoin to their list of currencies and they said they were interested but haven't got around to it yet.

How about work for BTC? You'll need a skill but its pretty easy to get paid. Actually, it's damn easy to get paid when your clients are from the right demographic.

Agreed.

1. Put up a simple 'Resumé' post in newbie/marketplace area.
2. Check out http://forbitcoin.com and post a thing or two.

313  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin Double - Betting game with faster payouts. on: July 04, 2011, 03:29:06 AM
I made two deposits today and they both showed up after 1 confirmation, the third time I made a deposit, I got nothing in my account.  The deposit now has 4 confirmations.  Any help?

Of course, but you'll have to give me a whole lot more detail... by PM if you wish... let me know your username and/or deposit address.

I'd have to find my tape play in that case... pretty sure I tossed that out along with all the copied tapes I had.

Haha, I went out and bought a top-of-the-line (for the 90's) Yamaha tape deck, specifically to archive all my old tapes to wave+mp3. It's taken me about 12 months to get the job half done.

Why not torrent all of those? Probably be a lot faster  Cheesy

I would but they are unique recordings. When a good DJ mixes a set, no two performances are the same Wink

Actually that's true for terrible DJ's also.

316  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do you protect bitcoin from an Electro-Magnetic Pulse? on: July 03, 2011, 07:46:38 PM
Anything an EMP could do to bitcoins it can also do to banks...

You mean it can effectively empty the safe?

1. Would an EMP affect consumer-grade optical storage?
2. Would an EMP affect an optical 'master' disk, the kind that professional duplication companies would have?
319  Other / Off-topic / Re: BitTorrent is ten years old today. on: July 03, 2011, 07:37:12 PM
I like the way people try to say they're not stealing so they can feel all morally well. The keyword duplicate is pretty much the same as stealing when it comes to copyrighted work, unless authorized by the copyright holder.

I used to believe that I wasn't stealing, but now I don't give a shit if I'm stealing or not.

The thing that makes me feel 'morally well' is rewarding those with an efficient business model, and refraining from rewarding those with an out-dated, inefficient business model.

It is funny to watch the RIAA scramble around and spend millions of dollars on a very ineffective strategy to cut down on piracy. The sad thing is that I thought by this time different business models would be sought, instead of hiding behind the government and crying while throwing millions of dollars at lawyers to make college students go bankrupt.

I reckon those guys will still be grasping at straws 10+ years from now, telling us all to get back to 1993 where we belong.

I'd say it's a little too early to say it was hacked.

Yeah, give them at least 3 weeks to get back to you...
