1221  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcent? on: April 17, 2011, 12:36:08 PM
1. It can be scaled downwards as far as needed

2. It is based on divisions of 1000 like the SI system

3. It uses the familiarity of 100 "subcoins" per "coin".

My preference, and I'm not sure yet how many share this opinion, is to leave cents in the past where they belong and have something like:

1 = 1 bitcoin
0.001 = 1 millicoin
0.000001 = 1 microcoin
0.000000001 = 1 nanocoin
0.000000000001 = 1 picocoin
1222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcent? on: April 17, 2011, 11:59:09 AM
1,000,000.00,000,001 just to conform to a pattern that made sense in a low-inflation/deflation 19th century world.

1,000,000.000,000,01 is clear, logical and easily parsed by most humans.

It's an easy choice for me. 'Cents' only make sense for soon-to-be-obsolete physical coins. Even if Bitcoin never gets used and the world keeps using government-issued money, there's no reason why my bank balance shouldn't be able to show as 1000.3333333333.

Are you calling mine fraudulent? Smiley Read the FAQ, it does exactly what it says it does.

I respect you!! +1

Thanks!

You know I actually went and looked at my profile after I read this, thinking I have indeed missed some "respect" system somewhere on this forum, but no, it's still on zero.

How would it work offline? I mean, it would work, but it has to have some data to start with. And every transaction since you last updated the software won't be available.

You can download the block chain and keep it as up-to-date as you need to by using the default client.

The supplemental WinXPBlockExplorer(TM) program would then just need to be told where to find the bitcoin data directory in it's setup options somewhere.

For those that need an example in order to 'get it':

I'd like to be able to do searches in blockexplorer.com without the risk of someone sniffing what I've been searching for, without using fancy proxies or anything like that. I just want to be able to do that completely offline, completely privately, and for whatever reason my OS of choice at the moment is WinXP.

I like that program Smiley  I put 5BTC towards it.

Thanks... are there any guidelines or "how to" for starting a bounty thread? I think a few people would find such a program handy, and I will put up at least 100btc for a decent implementation since I'm the one that wants it... but whoever programs it might end up making even more than that if more people pledge.

Can somebody do the same with me? As a test?

You can transfer 0,02 here:  1QAy6CaeeDLHYKTuPRjYQ3Qyw8zjsvscwG

Sent Marcello.

Consider it a gift... send it wherever you like.

1233  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: More divisibility required - move the decimal point on: April 17, 2011, 07:23:55 AM
Here's how I think small amounts could be shown on the user interface, to minimise confusion:

The digits are grouped into milli-cents and micro-cents, and are shown smaller than the usual "bitcoins and bitcents".

The advantages of this scheme are that it preserves the familiar "dollar-and-cents" type notation with two digits after the decimal point, yet allows for all of the available precision to be displayed when needed. The groups of three digits help to make these amounts easier to read.

I don't like the idea of 'preserving the familiar'. If we did that, America would still be using feet and inches... oh, wait.
1234  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Python/C programmer for hire. on: April 17, 2011, 06:46:04 AM
Hi Kokjo,

Could you clone http://blockexplorer.com so that it works offline as a Windows XP program?

Resulting code can be released to the public, yet I'll still pay you for it.

Cheers.
1235  Economy / Economics / Re: When People loose their wallet, do Bitcoins get lost forever ? on: April 17, 2011, 06:32:26 AM
Right, as Bitcoins are lost, the rest of them will gain in value and therefore can be divided in smaller and smaller increments.

So even if 20,999,999 become lost, the last 1 BTC will still be enough to run the whole economy.

(And then I'll be rich, because I just happen to find some of my lost coins).

It won't be. That's 1 billion units left. if there's 100 million bitcoin users, assuming wealth was perfectly spread, they could only have 10 units each. If 10 units is their life savings, there wouldn't be a denomination small enough to buy a candy bar.

It'd still be 'enough' BTC and I stick by that statement. We'd need more divisibility though.

1237  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Offline blockexplorer for Windows XP? on: April 17, 2011, 04:59:01 AM
I know it's a bit specific, but I was wondering if anyone has created a 'blockexplorer' program for Windows that can be run while offline? (Just point it at your bitcoin data directory).

If not, I will start a bounty for one as I'd find it mighty handy. I'm currently using Win XP sp3.

I chose Food/Supermarket but to be honest I'd like to spend them on real estate. Lots and lots of real estate.
