Quote
Yesterday's surprise was that Lennart Poettering quietly had left Red Hat following a decade and a half there leading PulseAudio among other projects and ultimately going on to start systemd that has fundamentally reshaped modern Linux distributions. It turns out he had joined Microsoft and continuing his work on systemd.

What could possibly go wrong?

not great, but at least not doing harm.

lol

I don't know about this "recession" We have the lowest unimployment rate in a very long time in Sweden, and as I understand it this goes for the rest of the westrn world as well, that's not a recession.

Unemployment rates are tricky as they typically exclude those who have stopped looking for work.

The war is also good for the economy, everybody now sees the true face of Russia and is therefore arming up, on top of that all that equipment given to Ukraine has to be replaced by new equipment. And on top of that comes the lend-lease deal, which will give Ukraine spanking new equipment that has to be produced. Remember, all the equipment given to Ukraine so far is outside the lend-lease deal, when that equipment starts to be delivered there will be a torrent of equipment going in to Ukraine not seen since The US sent lend-lease stuff to USSR during WW2.

War is destruction and is almost always a net negative. There can be some positive outcomes here and there. The US benefited from WWII mostly because Europe destroyed its manufacturing infrastructure (and borrowed heavily to do so).

Maybe they need more guns?

That's a trick question. Who doesn't?

EDIT: Fuck Brexit! On every second item i order from the UK, shipment gets halted at customs office because of "missing import license". Fuck you, Boris!

Have you considered that your problems are *caused* by an oversized and overbearing government and asking for a bigger and less accountable one to overcome them is looking at things somewhat askew?

Re ringworld-awesome sci-fi, not sure it could be detected with JWST, though...if it exists.
Generally, no systems are 100% efficient and heat radiation occurs.

Ringworld definitely not 100% efficient due to being a ring. Standard gravity presumably more important than worrying about suns burning out. Still an amazingly huge land area.
327  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 08, 2022, 03:05:04 AM
The classic Dyson sphere with 100% efficiency would only be detectable by observing objects orbiting the star. Basically like a black hole. Inefficient sphere would radiate heat (infrared) and be detectable by JWST.

My thoughts too. Though there would surely be diminishing returns and you'd have some emissions at a very low frequency.

But a Dyson sphere can also be built as a ring or rings around a star. Let's say a strip with solar panels going around the star. This could be detectable because the ring could cause fluctuations in the light emitted by the star.

No one mentioning Larry Niven's Ringworld?

Would this be classified as misinformation or disinformation?

And those police officers were guarding him.

Fucker.

I walk around most of the time without thinking about guns too. But I don't live in a shithole city presided over by a shitbag mayor. So there's that.

I was happy with the free travel / potential free move from the UK to western European countries but especially the political layer that it introduced and was getting bigger and bigger and bigger and less democratic; no thanks.
Bizarre how Ursula Von Der Leyen can even attend G7 meetings. It seems wrong to me. The only one on the ballot as far as I remember as EU leader. Not democratic.
With the economic downturn on the horizon I doubt many citizens across the EU will want more EU and more fiscal integration.

Absolutely. The EU could have been kept intact if the calls of those calling to apply the brakes had been heeded (or, for preference, a return to more of an ECC style organization) but nope, they had to keep on pushing for a Eurostate no matter the cost and the cost turned out to be that the Brits wanted out.

I have to wonder what happened to Boris though. He was always a bit of a nutter, sure (though many claim that was/is largely an act) but he seemed to get stopped in his tracks somehow and now is just another authoritarian politician.

Then it will get better or worse.

High density area with lowering of gun regulations... let's see...

Crime in NYC (and many other cities) is already on a steep incline at the moment. Good luck pulling any signal from the noise.
331  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 05, 2022, 05:26:56 PM
Take a look at the mass shootings they hardly happen with a handgun.
But yes handguns are the major source of homicide indeed...

Again, do some research, please. Don't just keep making shit up.
332  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 05, 2022, 05:25:08 PM
Any reason for a 30-60 capacity mag for self defense? Unless you are John Rambo ofcourse...

30 is a standard capacity mag for many sporting rifles. So we see already that the definition of "high capacity" is weaselly too.
333  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 05, 2022, 05:20:29 PM

Considering per-capita firearms ownership, it should not be a legitimate surprise the USA is ranked first, if we are being completely honest with ourselves.

Largely irrelevant too. Dead is dead. Homicides per capita is the number to look at. Of course people will use the most efficient tool for the job.
334  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 05, 2022, 05:17:50 PM

Dammit, now you made me look up flaccid.

Adj. 1. flaccid - drooping without elasticity; wanting in stiffness; "a flaccid penis". soft - yielding readily to pressure or weight. 2. flaccid - out of condition; not strong or robust; incapable of exertion or endurance; "he was too soft for the army"; "flabby around the middle"; "flaccid cheeks". flabby, soft.

Now do "turgid".
335  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 05, 2022, 05:12:29 PM
Well let's see if New Yorks forced relaxation of the gun control is going to bring down gun crimes...

Well, the restrictions already in place sure haven't been.
336  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 05, 2022, 05:10:36 PM
Well then you have a lot of mass "defensive rifle" shootings... hardly anyone got "assaulted" right?

Handguns mostly. Do some research, please.
337  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 05, 2022, 05:08:19 PM
First 3 are already in the law books.
Last 4 are unlikely to ever get any traction. It will be resisted or opposed. Plus there is debate on the use of the word "assault", or a question on its definition.

I'd argue we should call them defensive rifles.

"Semi-automatic small-caliber rifles" just doesn't induce the required level of fear.
338  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 05, 2022, 05:01:49 PM
- restrict the insane from buying
- restrict criminals from buying
- proper storage of weapons in the home
- gun registration
- no open or concealed carry for assault rifles
- ban on high capacity magazines
- ban on full-auto firing

Done.
Done. (Unless you're Hunter Biden)
Needs proof it would have an effect - and not just a negative one. (And also Weaselly. Define 'proper')
Would have no effect other than making people targets.
Nobody is open or otherwise carrying assault rifles.
Weaselly. Define high capacity.
Done (effectively)

Well done on showing how woefully uninformed you are.

339  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 05, 2022, 04:58:07 PM
- universal affordable healthcare
- addressing mental illness
- social security
- a safe working environment where
You can be sick without getting fired
you can get fired every second of the day for no reason
- the possibility of having a retirement

Ah, the laundry list...

Got a problem? It doesn't matter what it is, we'll trot out the same old stuff. Do you understand what "conversation" means?
340  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 05, 2022, 01:34:39 PM
Shame yesterday's bump didn't stick Sad

Skye Cloud Sodja
Jacob Camello
Tara Walker
Chris Guillott
Sage Myers
Brianna Ford
Kyla Ford
Tayler Calderon

Google them. (You may do better if you add 'antifa' to the search... but you will find them all, I think)

I could go on all day.  You are wrong.  Antifa mugshots from Portland:

Dude is behind the times. He should watch less CNN (everyone else is). The "antifa is just an idea" BS talking point was abandoned as more and more video evidence showed that that was a laughable statement. Politicians rely too much on old methods invalidated by modern technology.
