Just to make this clear and from your expert opinion as a pharmacist (working in the drug development/research field I assume): Are you saying that hydroxychloroquine has been proven completely useless as a treatment in the early stages of covid-19 infection (as the graph you posted would imply even if the conditions and small sample are far from ideal) or just only that the associated risks could (maybe) exceed its possible benefits?

Or maybe you are just saying that right now there is not ANY proper/official study that would be enough to show the usefulness of it in treatment covid-19 even if it is already being widely used in many hospitals worldwide (where supplies allow which is the main problem they are complaining about)?

Maybe "prophylactic" is not the right word to use... but when you can't know if you have already been infected because lack of testing and symptoms in the early stage and you only know you have been clearly exposed (like most health workers currently have been) it makes some sense to use it. I guess the health workers you know are using it on their own as a preventative measure... or has it been approved by protocols or directives on that particular hospital?

Yes, it is my honest opinion based on available data. I guess you are also giving your honest opinion, and that is fine. I would encourage you to improve your research, at least in relation of your strong statement about "having only been tested for people infected and not for profylactic usage" though. Also, when I say profilactic/preventive I mean it can help stop slow the reproduction of the virus once infected not that it can prevent infection but as you can never know when you are going to be exposed/infected maybe, just maybe, it makes sense to use it preventively in case of people with a very high risk (health workers with not enough PPE) or suspect of infection.

I have never said that there were conclusive and much less an officially vetoed stance about it.
 
Also, please check the very own thread you just posted and the comments about the graph you posted. I do agree with most of them. Not because I know better... But just because those comments and findings are coherent to most other "somewhat" reliable sources I have checked.

That being said, the best thing to do at this time is to avoid getting exposed to the virus and wait till it is safe outside and hospitals are not overwhelmed so that you can receive proper treatment. I guess we can at least strongly agree on that.

P.S.: If I were infected... I would like to have hydroxycloroquine treatment given to me AS EARLY as possible if given the choice. But hey, that's just me and until we KNOW BETTER.

In a ideal world, we should be giving hidroxicloroquine as a profylactic to health workers that are greatly exposed to the virus and also to everyone in the early stages of the infection. But... Not only we don't test people until they show clear symptoms of difficulty of breathing (noone is being tested otherwise, due to lack of tests) but even then, there is not enough supplies for all positives.

Yes there is shortage. Yes, it seems to work, there is enough evidence to support it does.

Problem here is:

1) Even if there is enough evidence that it does work, those are not "officially" vetoed.
2) Due to limit reserves and the point above, doctors are only using it at their own discretion (each hospital protocols) and only for patients that are already showing VERY bad pneumony. TOO LATE. It should be used at the early stage of infection (or even as a preventative measure) to slow rate of reproduction of the virus so that the inmune system can catch up.
