iCE is making one useful point: Ethereum and Nxt are going to be in competition for some markets.
The remaining crypto 2.0 projects look to be in bad shape: Counterparty was gutted by Overstock, Mastercoin/Omni looks almost dormant (apart from MaidSafe) and the Larimers have abandoned BitShares.......so there isn't much other crypto 2.0 competition left for Nxt.

NXT and the other Smartchain 1.0 projects you mention are toy versions of ETH.

"Competition" between NXT and ETH only exists in the abstract, academic, economic sense.

Practically speaking, there is no competition between NXT (obsolete, script-based equivalent of 1970s pocket calculator) and ETH (modern, Turing-complete global supercomputer).

In terms of state space, it's like comparing a Coke machine with IBM's Watson.

Could have chosen a better metaphor, iCE. How many people use coke machines compared to Watson ?
Stuff doesn't have to be insanely advanced and 'Turing-complete' to be usable.

iCE is more of a Monero troll than an ETH one.....unless he's had enough sense to dump his Monero bag into Ethereum already.

But: trolls are sometimes useful, and iCE is making one useful point: Ethereum and Nxt are going to be in competition for some markets.

Easy way to demo Nxt for yourself with no downloads, by using a random public Nxt node.
Go to:
http://www.peerexplorer.com/
Look at the Peers list, choose a Nxt node/peer with 'Open API', click on its 'Resolved IP'.
On the new page, click 'Action: Open Wallet GUI'.....
This takes you to the client log-in screen for that peer....

Login using either the account number:
NXT-QTSK-NTSG-ANEQ-6ZVQV

or the passphrase:
showmethemoney

And then play around as much as you like.
Please note that this account is totally open, so don't use it for real transactions.
(and note that 'showmethemoney' is the worst passphrase ever...... )

try this lot in your nautiluscoin.conf :

Code:
addnode=146.0.32.101

Naut is now a Nxt-based currency........much of the redemption process is closed, but you can still get your old PoW Naut swapped over here:
https://www.drachmae.exchange/

Only problem is that the exchange is still under development, so the swap won't be immediate.

Is this the release that breaks compatibility with SuperNet?

And what value is there in a mixer when NXT only has a tiny trickle of daily volume?

Nope, that was the previous release, and SuperNET are sorted out, so no worries.
The I.7.0e will break stuff in fun new ways, but we've documented all the info projects will need:
https://nxtforum.org/nrs-releases/nrs-v1-6-2/msg201497/#msg201497

A tiny trickle of daily volume thats....oh, look, $5000 higher than Monero:

What value is there in an anon coin with only a tiny, tiny trickle of daily volume ?

https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/tu-quoque

Monero uses ring signatures at the protocol level, so regardless of daily volume, tx are mixed among all the XMR that have ever moved.

NXT uses ad hoc coinjoin, so tx are only mixed with whatever (if any) other tx are provided at the moment by intermittent volume.

Do you have an answer for this question?

Is this the release that breaks compatibility with SuperNet?

Ah-ha, so Moneros low volume isn't a problem but Nxts is ?
Feels like you're clutching at straws now, iCE.

(BTW: the accepted definition of a liquid market is 1% of market cap traded per day.....so both NXT and Monero have pretty much the same level of liquidity: 50-75% of that 1%/day target)

Om SuperNET; read the red bits (again).

50  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to develop my own coin? on: November 30, 2015, 11:39:25 PM
I don't have many coding skills but I would like to know if I can develop my own coin and what is the easiest way to do it.

Does anyone know about some good tutorials or maybe sites where I can develop my own coin?
No one except satoshi and owner of litecoin(mayby dogecoin too) developed their own coin, the rest just made a simple clone of it and changed some values and boom you have a unique coin. There are some guides on the internet, I think this one is the best(for free):https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=193025.0

Eh...you are forgetting that Ripple (not a crypto, btw), Nxt, Ethereum, BitShares and NEM are all original code.
Dash, Peercoin and Namecoin all have at least some original code, though I can't be arsed finding out exactly how much.
(sure someone will be along to tell me soon... Cheesy )

Sounds cool, we need more communication between NXT users, and need to expand userbase alot.

How is the Tenesse marketing project going? I havent heard much of that recently?

The helpdesk initiative is part of the overall Tennessee plan: TNSSE is not only about marketing, but also improving the Nxt user experience.
Giving people reliable support is one big step to take, and I'm happy to report that the helpdesk has just recieved its first ticket.....

Here's the PR stuff that's come out recently from the Tennessee project:

http://www.computescotland.com/nextgen-blockchain-8406.php

https://news.bitcoin.com/interview-nxt-foundations-dave-pearce/

http://allcoinsnews.com/2015/11/21/nxt-foundation-positions-platform-to-entirely-replace-legacy-banking-systems/

A radio interview with me:
https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/password-18-11-15/
(which suffers from some annoying recording issues in this version)

Here are two recent magazine issues with TNSSE related content:

http://nxter.org/nxt-2nd-birthday/

http://www.joomag.com/magazine/btcor-november-2015/0389467001443863377?short

Yeah, we've been busy.
But most of this first month of TNSSE operations has been about laying groundwork and making connections with the media,
so we should be getting a lot more stuff published in December.

Lastly: we're distributing this special issue of CORE magazine as a real, live paper magazine:

If you want  a copy (complete with redemption code for NXT+assets) and you're in Amsterdam, come along to the next Bitcoin Wednesday meet-up:

52  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: what about trust / trustworthy devs on: November 29, 2015, 12:51:06 PM
Trust the community, not just the devs.
Particularly when it comes to real-world business decisions, devs are sometimes not the best people to have in total control of a project.

Genuine decentralisation also means as much decentralisation of all aspects of a project as is possible.
A leaderless project with a strong community (like Nxt or Bitcoin Grin ) is  a much better long-term bet than a project where everything from coding to business decisions to design is decided by one person.

I can't speak to if NXT as a whole is a scam currency, but my personal experience was that it took basically two days to confirm a transaction. And when I went to make a small transaction to test something out it said my password was wrong.

A block taking two days has never happened before, are you sure you put the transaction through?

Also the Client has no way of knowing what *your* password is. It just takes what you give it, processes it and shows the account it is related to. How exactly did it tell you it was wrong?

When the servers are given a kick, you will be able to try Nxt for free and without needing to download the client or the blockchain here. You can learn the basics (and advanced bits) here risk free.

I did a faucet to get 4 nxt and then sent 1 nxt to someone to test it out. then it took about 2 days for the 1440 confirm counter to reach for both of these. I didn't have the program running the whole time, so I don't know if that slows it down.

As for the password, I was logged into my account. I went to do another transaction (I believe to set a name or alias as another test) and it said wrong password. I typed it about 3 times, did it without the dots and copied pasted, ect. Tried different type of transaction, ect.

Then I went and logged out. and tried signing in through my password only and it gave me a whole new account number.

May be my newbishness but as far as I could tell I did everything right.

Couple of things: the 1440 block wait is the wait time until your 4 NXT became eligible to forge (staking, in other words).
You can spend the little bastards after one confirmation/block........

NXT is a brain wallet, so passphrase=account.
If you get your passphrase wrong.....you open a different account.
As an example:
The passphrase "EvilDaveisaplonker" opens the Nxt account NXT-UQWX-5WEP-J5W2-DRD7V
but "EvilDaveisapl0nker" opens NXT-BRRS-L7XK-UADM-34428

What has probably happened is that you've stored your passphrase incorrectly
(if you're copying and pasting out of Word: don't!  Use NotePad instead....Word tends to add some extra linebreaks)

If you want to try out a Nxt demo, go here:
http://www.peerexplorer.com/
Click on the 'resolved IP' of any peer with  'open API', then choose 'Open Wallet GUI' at the bottom of the page.
You are then on the log-in screen of that Nxt server.......play around, for example by using the above 2 accounts.
Do not use 'real' account passwords on an unknown Nxt node/server, btw, there is a theoretical security risk.
57  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: All coins and this whole market is controlled by TPTB on: November 24, 2015, 10:57:22 PM
The scientific mathematical formula is called a Pareto distribution, and it turns up in a lot of statistics:

http://betterexplained.com/articles/understanding-the-pareto-principle-the-8020-rule/
(easy version)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_distribution
(hard version)

And, if anyone cares, I checked the numbers for Nxt:
1-10 own 22.4%, 1-100 own 67.9% 1-500 own 89% (and,yeah, I know, it should be 1-1000, but I have only the top 500 at hand right now)

58  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Development Discussion - The dev plan that keeps on delivering on: November 24, 2015, 10:36:21 PM
I'm currently sending the following message out to all exchanges to help them with the upgrade path from 1.5.15 to 1.6.2 to 1.7.
There's useful information here for everyone, especially  if you run an NXT-based project.
Spread the word.....

*************************************************************************************************
Mandatory upgrade to NRS 1.7 before 21 Jan 2016

The next planned Nxt release, 1.7, will be a mandatory upgrade for everyone, as it will be a hard fork.
The first 1.7 version will be released at the end of this month (November 2015) as an experimental release,
a stable mainnet 1.7 version will be released at the end of the year,
and the 1.7 hardfork will be set to occur in mid January 2016.

Any systems still running on versions older than 1.7 will be adversely affected.
We recommend that any systems still running now on the last version (1.5.15) be upgraded as soon as possible to the newest stable release: 1.6.2.
This will make the transition to the 1.7 branch much simpler.
(Note: this does not apply to MGW node operators, liase with the MGW team for the latest information)

An upgrade from 1.5.15 to 1.7 is NOT recommended, and we will be unable to provide effective support for that upgrade path.

While the stable 1.7 version has not been released yet, it is
imperative for Nxt-based projects that preparations for migration to 1.7 begin now, as for any
API client this will involve a number of code changes. The current stable release is 1.6.2,
and all API changes required for 1.7 are already fully supported in 1.6.2.
Upgrading to 1.6.2 now will ensure a smooth transition to 1.7 when it is released, as there should be no API
incompatibilities between 1.6.2 and 1.7 stable.

Below is a high level review of the code modifications required.
A detailed list of all affected APIs is posted at:
https://nxtforum.org/nrs-releases/nrs-v1-6-2/msg199198/#msg199198 , and
the changes are also discussed in the 1.6.0e, 1.6.1e, and 1.6.2
changelogs, available as usual in the changelogs directory of the 1.6.2
release package. Please do read the information in these changelogs.

https://nxtforum.org/nrs-releases/nrs-v1-6-2/
https://nxtforum.org/nrs-releases/nrs-v1-6-1e/
https://nxtforum.org/nrs-releases/nrs-v1-6-0e/

1. A number of API calls, which in 1.5.15 and previous releases return
additional information, at a performance cost, have had their defaults
modified not to return those extra fields unless specifically
requested. The format of the API response has not changed, only what
fields are returned by default. If your code uses any of those APIs and
in some invocations needs the additional fields, make sure to add the
corresponding "include" parameters in those places.

2. The getAccountTransactions and getAccountTransactionIDs APIs,
deprecated in 1.5 have been removed in 1.6. Use
getBlockchainTransactions instead and make sure to handle correctly the
phased transactions. Some enhancements to getBlockchainTransactions,
such as being able to get only executed phased (or not phased)
transactions, introduced in 1.6.1e, should make that easier.

3. Some APIs no longer do a detailed error checking of the user input.
Any APIs that accept an object id such as account, asset, or currency,
but do not need to retrieve the actual object, no longer check for its
existence. Such APIs will now return an empty result list instead of an
error, when supplied for example with non-existent asset id.

4. Asset transfers to the Genesis account are now treated as deletion
of asset shares, and as such are not retrievable using the
getAssetTransfers API. The quantityQNT in the asset JSON returned by
APIs such as getAsset now corrects for such share deletion. The
original asset quantity issued is returned as initialQuantityQNT in the
asset JSON.

The above API incompatibilities must be taken care of on upgrade from
1.5.15 to 1.6.2. The 1.7 API will be consistent with 1.6.2 and will
require no further adjustments.

Other than the API tweaks, there are two major changes to take effect
in the 1.7 hardfork, that require taking action now and preparing in
advance:

1. For virtually all transaction types in 1.7, fees charged will no
longer be constant
(currently 1 NXT), but based on the actual
transaction size. As it is not possible to hardcode the logic for fee
calculation in each client of the API, the approach suggested is to let
the server determine and use the minimum fee required, which happens
when a new transaction is submitted with feeNQT=0 parameter. This
feature is fully supported in 1.6.2, and therefore a migration to using
server-side calculated fees can be started now.

2. The maximum allowed size of permanent message attachments (plain or
encrypted) has been significantly reduced, from 1000 bytes to 160
bytes. If you use permanent messages, regardless of the transaction
type they are attached to, you need to make sure their size does not
exceed 160 bytes. As fees for permanent messages have also been
increased significantly and are proportional to the actual message
size, it is strongly recommended to switch to using prunable messages
instead. To create a message as prunable, the only change required is
to add messageIsPrunable=true parameter to the corresponding
transaction creation API call. The format of the transaction JSON is
the same for permanent and prunable messages (this is why they can't
both coexist in the same transaction), therefore no changes in parsing
the JSON response are needed. Prunable messages are also deleted by
default after 90 days. If your application needs to have them available
longer, or indefinitely, this can be configured in the nxt.properties
file, and it is also possible to automatically retrieve such expired
prunable messages from archival nodes running on the Nxt network.
Prunable messages have been supported since 1.5, and archival nodes are
introduced in 1.6.2, so again the migration from permanent to prunable
messages can be started now, without waiting for the 1.7 stable release.

Please see this forum thread for information and discussions regarding
the transition to prunable messages and the fee calculation changes:
https://nxtforum.org/core-development-discussion/adapting-client-side-code-to-the-fee-changes-planned-for-1-7/

We have also set up a mailing list, to allow better direct communication with the Nxt dev team, so if you
are responsible for an Nxt-based project, sign up here:
