681  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The future of Crypto - Best etablished (PoS) Coin to buy in on: January 23, 2015, 04:45:32 PM
And it won't be in Java. Lol.

dude it can be written in paper for all i care! as long as it works and solves centralization!
if java is so vulnerable has anyone broken nxt yet? it looks like a nice sum of bounty on it.

im pretty sure most people who was once against nxt has already changed their perspective on nxt after all it has proven itself.
People are afraid of what they don't understand. that's what happened when nxt decided to stand out to be the first 2.0 crypto.
Let's face it, nxt opened the doors to a whole new level of crypto 2.0 competition, just like bitcoin, nxt is an innovator!

ps. you may have registered longer than other peoples but you certainly don't look like you have as much experience. XRP is BANK 2.0 it has it's own needs and has its own potential but it is not a crypto-currency, it is centralized.

Totally agreed. NXT is what got me to take the whole 'Crypto 2.0' thing seriously. Strong dev support made it an even easier decision.

This.

Who cares about their great devs? Anyway, the best devs end up working for the richest companies. Bringing crypto mainstream is not a technical problem.

NXT don't have the networks or the capability to network with banks and government.

If NXT had their own territory (or owned a 1,000 acre a hippie commune), it could work great. Unless they get away from their terminals and get out into the real world, NXT doesn't have a hope in hell.

LOL - sure Nxt could do it, but who wants to do this? Decentralized crypto currency should be for the people, not for the banks or governments.  Roll Eyes

Sounds very commie.

You are no more a man of the people than I.

Best of luck with the populist uprising.

So, whatever happened to the concept that crypto could make the world a slightly better place ?

NXT is giving everyone the abillity to create advanced (or simple, if ya like) financial structures and systems using crypto, without needing to ask anyones permission or to go through any form of vetting process.
Would you prefer that these tools are restricted to the 1% who control pretty much everything else?

682  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What is Your Top 5? on: January 23, 2015, 04:30:24 PM
Question: What is your top 5 Cryptocurrencies (non payment-gateway/ blockchain based app) on https://www.coingecko.com/en ?

What do you mean by "non payment-gateway"?

Not Ripple is the way I read it......probably not Stellar, either.

My Top 5 picks are easy: NXT, NXT, NXT, NXT, BTC.  Grin

(though I do like BTM, BTCD, Noble and maybe UNO for the long term)
683  Economy / Economics / Re: Declining Bitcoin market cap dominance on: January 23, 2015, 01:24:17 PM
You have to sort on trade Volume 24h. Market Cap means nothing

.......

+1

I have witnessed a few shitcoins that briefly showed as having a bigger market cap than bitcoin. They all had low volume and their devs used the cheap trick of buying a small quantity at an exorbitant price. During one of the doge coin pumps someone stated it off by buying a small amount at the price of one doge = one bitcoin. That briefly gave doge coin the appearance of having a bigger market cap than bitcoin.

Just watch MarineCoins movements for a few days:
http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/marinecoin/

(Do NOT, for the love of God, buy any)

You'll notice that MC is now down at # 53 on CMC (-54%, $18 24hr trade), sometime in the next couple of days the MC dev will pump it with a $200 buy-in all the way back up to around #20, and then it'll slide back down until the next pump.

This is a perfect n00b trap, btw, because it's very easy to look at the % price rise, think "Wow, thats going up" and then buy in. The problem is that because there is no real trade volume, an investor will not be able to sell out and ends up as a bag holder immediately.

Always check the trade volume: anything under $1000 per day is not really tradeable. Might be a good long term investment, but in the short term: avoid.
684  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Paycoin (XPY) is scam on: January 21, 2015, 02:00:06 PM
Well, at least Paycoin is getting some free publicity....
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2015/01/bitcoin-startup-gaw-miners-reportedly-under-sec-investigation/

I cannot believe how f**ked up this is, JG and Paycoin seem to stumble from one clusterfuck to the next,  like the 3 Stooges with a massive pile of someone elses money.
A rollback of Paybase trading (even though there seems to be no evidence that the platform was actually faulty) would be the cherry on top of the cake.

Anyone with money still in XPY must either be the most optimistic noob ever, or simply daytrading for quick bucks.
I can't believe that anyone could now take this shit seriously as a long term investment.

685  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: I'm dumping Nxt and here's why you should too on: January 19, 2015, 12:58:45 PM

Trying to get banks and governments on board with this attitude (an attitude that's rampant in the NXT community) will get you absolutely nowhere.

That's the reason the OP is "dumping NXT and why you should too".

I think NXT is great as an anonymous crypto, but it cannot be the world's currency. One of the key foundation stones of government (as well as maintaining your borders, keeping law and order and collecting taxes, etc.) is the ability to control your own currency. A bunch of libertarian (lite) guys on the internet who have no territory and no influence aren't going to just come along and tell governments that they know better and that governments should listen to them and that governments should give up their sovereignty to a bunch of libertarian (lite) guys on the internet. Techies might be smart, but they don't always know better.

Ripple are demonstrating their technology to governments and banks and are showing them how cryptocurrency can make business more efficient and can make life better for citizens. This is hard to do when there's Bitcoin and Dodgecoin and NXT and all these other drug/libertarian nutters constantly in the news (for all the wrong reasons) pumping their crypto coin; nullifying the efforts of Ripple in championing the idea of legitimate crypto currency.

It's at the stage now where Ripple Labs need to remove themselves from these public lists (such as coinmarketcap.com and coingecko.com) because it makes out that XRP could be compared to Bitcoin and all the baggage that goes with the toxic Bitcoin brand.

@Eamorr:
I need to point out that you are replying to a massively ancient thread. NWO (the OP) started this in Jan 2014, a few weeks after NXTs launch.
Hopefully, he'll have finished his 50,000 NXT dump by now.

Also: Ripple isn't really a crypto-currency..........so removal from CMC sounds like a good idea.

You seem to be missing a very large aspect of Nxt: it's not just a crypto-currency, but a complete platform for crypto-based finance. The ultimate aim of Nxt is not to have the NXT currency at #1 on CMC (though that would be nice) but to provide people with a genuinely usable alternative to the current financial system.
Just like Bitcoin, in fact, but Nxt provides users with more features/tools than just the basic store/transfer functionality of BTC.

@inBitweTrust:

Having spent some time going thru the Jeff Garzik critique of NXT (and the replies from the NXT community), the only genuinely valid point of Jeffs criticism was to do with the development process for NXT code.
Right now we only have one dev team contributing to NXT core protocols and main client, Jeffs point was that in order to be truly de-centralised NXT needs to have multiple independent teams contributing to the core, as per open-source ideals. Cant argue with that and it would be a good thing. However,  NXT is still evolving. Given another year or two, and we probably will have multiple dev teams on the core development process.

Pretty much all of the rest of Jeffs points didn't stand up to scrutiny, most being based on Jeffs opinion, rather than any verifiable facts..

686  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: I'm dumping Nxt and here's why you should too on: January 19, 2015, 12:44:51 AM
The NXT community did spend quite a long time last year refuting all of the above......:
https://nxtforum.org/general-discussion/a-longer-reply-to-jeff-garzik/

A few points to mention:

Large stakeholders: just like every other crypto, NXT is probably better distributed than most.

Anon Devs: we have around 9 core (ish) devs, 3 of whom are non-anonymous.
Not perfect, but, hey, it's crypto.

Source is open, anyone can contribute (met a guy a few weeks ago at a BTC meet, got into a chat, turned out he had contributed code to the contacts system in NXT core).
Development code for upcoming stuff is not open, production code is completely open.

Active resistance: look at the number of NXT clones. We simply don't give a flying f**k on this point (mostly).

Security incidents: one scam centered around Cointropolis (round 50 BTC) and the BTER hack. In a year.
Both attacks were purely based on social engineering and shitty password security, there was never any breach of NXT code itself.

687  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Cleanup: I'll attack some coins - I owned APEXcoin for 90 blocks on: January 18, 2015, 02:23:06 AM
Yup, from my point of view, if cynicSOB (or any other sod) can successfully attack Nxt.....I want to know everything about it.
He did choose a relatively dead coin for this run, so far I've seen almost zero activity from the Apexcoin 'community' since this happened, and cynicSOB did say that he'd restore any misplaced funds, if needed.

I 'm going to repeat my invitation to cynic (and anyone else who wants to have a go):
Come and have a go on the NXT Testnet, and see if you can do some damage...
https://nxtforum.org/index.php

How much would the award be for attacking the testnet?

Good question.

You get nothing for a try......got to be a successful attack, preferably with enough documentation to reproduce it and find a fix.
If someone is serious about having a go....head on over to the NXT forum (or PM me, but I'm both busy and lazy  Grin), start a introduction thread and take it from there.
The NXT community will be happy to help with the set-up for an attack on TestNet, and we can discuss bounties clearly before anyone starts putting serious time and effort into this.
From what I remember (and NXT hasn't had any good serious bugs for a long time, and no successful attacks), we paid out sums from 20,000 to 200,000 NXT for finding vulnerabilities, but as i say, we can negotiate.
The dev team will be the final judges in all of this, btw, not a lowly shill such as myself.
688  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Cleanup: I'll attack some coins - I owned APEXcoin for 90 blocks on: January 17, 2015, 11:44:35 PM
I think it would be usefull if he works with developers to show the weakness in coins and try to find a solution for that.

To play "god" and decide to kill a coin has no use at all, unless you know that some developer is a known scammer and want to stop him from scamming people.

No it does have a purpose.  How would you like to have what you think is a decent coin and it gets attacked and crushed overnight while you are sleeping..   If the op gives warning and then attacks and really hurts what was thought to be a good coin he did you a favor.

A) Told all coin holders in advance
B) proved the coins weakness

I would say it is a service if he can expose a flaw in a coin.

691  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Even though BTS devs are greedy, it's still better tech than NXT and NuBits on: January 17, 2015, 01:51:17 AM
I'd like to have 'Gun Compensation' built into NXT, actually.

Stan,  if you get a moment....... Grin

On the question of 'better' tech.....this is something that only time and exposure to the real world can truly decide.
No matter how tightly engineered, mistakes and exploits are always going to be present in any new code.

692  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Cleanup: I'll attack some coins - I owned APEXcoin for 90 blocks on: January 17, 2015, 12:00:07 AM
The real test for NXT will come if someone sets up a ponzi using NXT.

I have a funny feeling someone did.....
Yep, they did.
and then...
Someone else did it, too. Twice.

Moving swiftly on....I reckon it would be a good idea to give cynicSOB a go on the NXT TestNet. That way, we can provide him with as much TestNXT as he needs to carry out an attack, without worrying too much about incurring real-world costs. And, if any of this works out, we should discuss a bounty.....

Have the Apexcoin devs shown any reaction, thanks or communication about the attack ?
693  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The cryptocurrency short list on: January 16, 2015, 10:30:22 PM
Hmmm....looks about right to me.

The only issue I'd have is with the years data for NXT.
NXT went live at the end of November 2013, so there should be a years worth of data somewhere....
I'm pretty sure that NXT was on CoinMarketCap by mid-December 2013.
694  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Nothing-at-Stake & Long Range Attack on Proof-of-Stake (Consensus Research) on: January 16, 2015, 07:50:23 PM
Could you describe attack scenario in details? After reproducing it in simulation we would like to pay you pretty good bounty Smiley

please elaborate on the details of the bounty Smiley
writing a white-paper quality explanation is a time consuming task

Er...I think Kushti may be getting a little bit ahead of himself here.
If you can pull off a successful attack on NXT, or an attack that works in Kushtis simulations, there will be lots of love for ya....possibly even parades!
And definitely some bounty, if you can also produce good quality documentation on the attack.  (Doesn't have to be real WP standard, but that would be up to our devs to judge.)

But: right now, we don't have a formal bounty offer already open.

I just had a thought: maybe you could run an attack on the NXT Testnet ?
Shouldn't be any problem giving you a stake of TestNXT to play with........

If you're up for it, head on over to NXTworld:
https://nxtforum.org/index.php
and we can discuss further......

Anyone else around ? chemikali seems to not understand what's going on.
696  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New and looking to buy Cryptocurrency on: January 16, 2015, 07:32:35 PM
I like CoinGecko, even though NXTs ratings there could be better...... Roll Eyes
But, hey, the one thing CG can't quantify is the most important thing : how well does the tech work ?

I think, btw, that NXTs low rating on Dev score is based on the fact that we have only recently put up a GitHub repo, previously we had everything on BitBucket.

On the OPs investment question: DYOR means do your own research, and you should do exactly that.
Take the time to figure out what is BS and what is real before you invest, a week or two waiting and researching won't make any real difference to your investment in the longterm, but it could save you from making an expensive mistake if you rush in now.

Having said that, BTC does look like a good buy right now, and NXT is always a good idea.

697  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [APEX] BlockNET | PoS Phase, MULTI-Wallet with Exchange, GAMES on: January 16, 2015, 06:53:22 PM
Before you start freaking out, mate, try reading this:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=897493.0

CynicSOB is attempting to prove the vulnerablities of PoS coins, and he started off with Apexcoin, as it appeared to be fairly dead.
(I'm hoping he'll have a try at NXT or a NXT clone as his following target)

So, are you the Apexcoin dev, chemikali ?
Several people have tried today to get in touch with Apexcoin, to get their side of the story, but no-one seems to be at home.

698  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Nothing-at-Stake & Long Range Attack on Proof-of-Stake (Consensus Research) on: January 16, 2015, 06:45:31 PM
Hmmm....if I get some spare time I'll fire up a NAS node and see how the network looks.

I wasn't able to connect to any peers.  You have any better luck?

Absolutely nothing. Looks like NAS is very dead.
699  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Altcoins - some anecdotal evidence on: January 16, 2015, 06:02:19 PM
CoinGecko gives a much more balanced view of how a crypto is doing than CMC, IMHO, and has a lot more info.
Top site.......!

I was gonna correct the NXT forum topics/posts issue, but I see you guys have figured it out.
Just to be completely anal, it's currently at:
Quote
148750 Posts in 6517 Topics by 3564 Members.

"Hippie movements", btw. Much LOL. Don't confuse a commitment to decentralisation with fuzzy headedness.
NXT may not have German Barons to whip us into line, but hippies we ain't. (well, mostly)

Are there any active NAS guys/girls left around ?
