41  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why do they always attack the newbies? on: May 08, 2024, 03:42:59 PM
That's the internet for you buddy. There definitely have been cases where older members were overly critical and dismissive of low ranking members, and there are also cases where newbies assume every form of correction to be a criticism, expecting others to communicate with them they exact way they will like.

This is the internet, and it's unhinged. You have to build the ability to filter the messages you read and take in only that which is useful to you, discarding the rest. Rank does not factor into conversations here, I'll rather discuss with a newbie that's knowledgeable on that topic than a legendary member who is, in due time they won't be newbies any longer.
42  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What happens when mining and nodes stop working on: May 08, 2024, 03:29:40 PM
<snip>but from my findings I've come to notice that nodes and miners are actually third parties in the network. Without them there would be no confirmed transaction or new coins running into existence. Correct me if I'm wrong.
The difference here is you do not depend on the third party. Regulatory services like bank can seize your funds and force you to come in and submit documents. Nodes and miners cannot, they either pick up your transaction or not and with effective decentralization, if they don't pick it up someone else will.

Although it's almost impossible for all nodes and miners to stop working, but let's say it eventually happened fictionally, what would be the outcome? Is is there something I'm missing???
Transactions cannot be confirmed and the network will halt till there are miners.
43  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A person's browser history is a window into their online Identity. on: May 08, 2024, 01:41:02 PM
I'll do one up on the topic title, your online activity tells pretty much everything about your real life. Websites which track us through cookies that track our actions on other sites and the data we give them ourselves, can tell everything about us. For example, they can sell that data to politicians as it can accurately predict which percentage of people will vote for or against a service. Online trackers have a better idea of our tastes and interests than we do.

I know this isn't a thread on privacy, but it's a reminder to limit the access you give to your device as much as possible. Disable all non essential cookies and clear your cache often.
44  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Fraudulent e mail on: May 07, 2024, 05:19:03 PM
I'll be suspicious how scammers got access to your email and knew you registered on coinbase if you did it all just very recently. Have you been engaged in any online activity that required you to submit your email recently or giving off any other financial information?

If you're certain you'll stay vigilant then you can keep using same email address and carefully vet any mail you get before acting on it or not. Or you can change your email address to a new one you've not used on anything before and never share that for any other purpose.
45  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Learn a skill instead, you will be set for life. on: May 07, 2024, 06:55:30 AM
From the article, USDT was not the means of laundering the money it was just the payment option they chose, perhaps because they thought it will make the job easier. They tried to use shell companies to clean the money from drugs and then transfer that using crypto, surprising considering the individual involved, but not surprising for some reasons.

Your advice holds good. Crypto doesn't offer a traceless route to hide illegal funds.
46  Other / Meta / Re: What is a good tool for this? on: May 07, 2024, 05:16:50 AM
If you're only interested in the posts for education purposes, whether a post is edited or not should not matter. All you need is the user's post history and carefully read through as many of the replies you can.

Posts are usually edited cause the initial content may have had an error or the user wanted to add new knowledge to it, making the updated post more informative than the initial one. Deleted posts should not matter too cause they were deleted for a reason.
47  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What can we do to make Bitcoin hit $100k on: May 06, 2024, 03:55:10 PM
One billion people who are interested in or trust Bitcoin won't move the price one penny up if they don't buy one satoshi!
The idea is that a least 20% of those interested will eventually become investors when they are convinced.

We are discussing what we can do to help the network not what needs to happen, it's not like anyone can force 1 billion people to buy in, you only control your pocket. The most you can do is lead people in this direction if they are willing to jump in.
48  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What will happen to BTC if Government gets involved? on: May 06, 2024, 07:16:23 AM
"Governments" are not against Bitcoin. Some governments are, some are very open to it and want to create an enabling environment for it. Also, those against it are not doing so because criminals are using it. Criminals are using their legal tenders way more but there's no campaign against it.
49  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbies should be forewarned. on: May 06, 2024, 07:11:20 AM
And until he disconnects the wallet from that website, access to the wallet remains with those fraudsters.
Disconnecting your wallet from the website does not take away their access to the wallet. Anyone who could send out from a wallet holds the private key used to sign the transaction, they can have that backed up as the seedphrase and use it even when you disconnect the wallet from the website.

If a wallet has been compromised and all the funds in it lost, abandon it permanently. Create a new wallet and do not repeat the earlier mistakes.

<snip>
Bitcoin does the convincing not me. I refrain from giving investment advice cause that means sharing the responsibility and risking being blamed if it doesn't go as they plan; you'll be surprised how rosy some people think investments go.
I would not want to be getting messages anytime the price drops by 5%.

Anyone with a good social reach, a YouTube channel etc, can use that platform to educate people, that way you're not directly convincing anyone to invest but you're putting out good content that will help anyone interested.
51  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What can we do to make Bitcoin hit $100k on: May 05, 2024, 02:34:32 PM
• Patronize businesses that accept Bitcoin, that helps to increase the adoption of Bitcoin attracting more users.
• Hodl and don't panic sell when the price goes down.
• Help out new investors on forums like these who have questions about bitcoin.
• If you have developer skills you can design ideas that will solve some of the drawbacks the network is having, like increase in fees.
• Debunk misleading information being shared about Bitcoin and help clear up at misconception.

Other than these, there's not much we can do, these will not even have more than a 5% influence on the price. Bitcoin gets more valuable cause of the features it has and their applications.
52  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcoin advertisements are a bit outdated on: May 05, 2024, 01:05:06 PM
Those are not forum ads but factoids. Forum ads have been suspended since 2022 by theymos.

I don't think the factoid list has been updated for many years now, I agree the beta software but should be removed, the other part of the message will always be necessary.
53  Other / Meta / Re: Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules, guidelines, FAQ on: May 05, 2024, 12:55:36 PM
This is not how to report to moderators.

Every post has a "reply to moderator" button, click on it under that thread and include these links in the comment for a mod to check and take action.
54  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Regulations Not Working as Planned?? on: May 05, 2024, 12:52:58 PM
That BTC could work as a money system for the people and help people to devalue FIAT currency?
Bitcoin was never intended to devalue fiat currencies, that's not the objective of the network.

And regulations are working to a very large extent. Majority of Bitcoin users gain exposure to it through centralized channels which the government control and regulate. The pockets of users who are keen on privacy and decentralization grows smaller constantly and the government is already targeting privacy channels, making it difficult for users to stay under the radar.
55  Economy / Economics / Re: Combination of Different FIATS Make World Inflation? on: May 05, 2024, 12:49:00 PM
I'm assuming you're asking the influence of different countries in global inflation and how the world rld powers can impact the economies of other countries.

We live in a global village where economies are greatly intertwined due to global trade, this is the reason why a war in one part of the world can negatively impact a country on the opposite side. But while we are linked to each other one way or the other, all countries are not tied strongly into any one bunch, so the impact of inflation or rather a drop in economic activity in China will not affect all other countries to the same degree and will not affect some at all.

Sovereign nations adopt different fiscal policies and that is the major driver of their economies.
56  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The Role of Proof of Reserves in Crypto Exchange Transparency on: May 04, 2024, 07:04:16 PM
I think you should not have your coins on an exchange at all. Whatever proof you get will still mean you're trusting that the auditors are legitimate and that the exchange will still not use the funds for other activities.

You do not need a third party to provide proof that someone else is holding your funds when you can just hold the coins yourself and keep them as safe as you will like them to be.
57  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion for new information in poster info on: May 04, 2024, 10:09:07 AM
I agree with plaguedeath and joker_josue.

I have learnt from many threads that I was not a part of. If any poster had stopped replying cause the thread starter had been inactive, I'ld have not gotten to read their posts, except I commented asking further questions or created my own topic further cluttering the board.

Besides it doesn't matter to most if the topic starter is active. Within a couple of minutes, hours at most each thread gets the answer the op is looking for. This doesn't stop anyone from posting the same answer in different ways to either fulfill their post count or increase their activity.

I'll encourage reporting threads that have gotten their answer to be locked by the mods.
58  Other / Meta / Re: Locked threads on reputation board on: May 04, 2024, 04:08:28 AM
Has anyone (especially the person in question mentioned in the thread) ever reported the locked thread they cannot reply in to the moderators and what was the outcome?

Mods are allowed to interpret the rules as they see fit, so there doesn't exactly have to be a standing rule about it for a mod to change the status of a thread from locked to unlocked. If they regularly unlock the thread to bump it, that's an added reason to unlock it.
59  Economy / Economics / Re: Production of goods and services as an economic stimulant i on: May 03, 2024, 07:01:58 PM
I would have highlighted corruption to be the major issue facing such countries like Nigeria, but it goes beyond that. Almost every country has some level of corruption, but the system in Nigeria is designed to keep a clear gap between the elite ruling class and the populace. If the country is allowed to thrive and available resources properly managed, the government will have more to loot but the citizens will also have access to a stable economy which will support growth and entrepreneurship. Such a country will close the gap between the elite and the rest of the population.

This situation will have a follow through effect that elections will not be so easy to rig, funds will also not be so easy to mismanage and bribery will not always work.
60  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin ETF good or bad? on: May 03, 2024, 06:47:43 PM
ETFs do not bring Bitcoin any closer to being used as a currency, it actually encourages it to be held for extended periods of time. It will attract more potential long term holders who could not gain access to Bitcoin directly which should cause the price of Bitcoin to increase and reduce price dumps caused by panic sell offs.

Nothing can give the government more control of the Bitcoin in your wallet if you handle it using the right privacy tools.
