41  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Do you think you scan spot a fraud email? on: May 11, 2024, 03:44:07 PM
what can we do to futureproof our relatives?

Most of the phishing I usually get is about things I don't have. But just one week ago I've received one that looked very convincing and almost got me... but my usual way to handle this stuff saved me and.. at least for phishing I do have an advice: don't ever click the links from e-mails, go instead directly to the related app or website and check there, usually you should have a message, warning, whatever. Else.. it was probably phishing.

For the cases they may e-mail (or phone!) the parents that you're in trouble... it's more difficult, indeed. The only idea I have is something I've heard of for keeping the smaller kids safe: discuss about a number, phrase, keyword, whatever: only if that is part of the e-mail or discussion it will be taken serious, else it can be considered fraud attempt. But, I know, this doesn't apply to all possible cases.
At least in case of arrest a phone call is permitted, right?

Merita suportul nostru.

Lock-time transactions for inheritance is awkward stuff in my view as they required a constant renewal while you alive. Besides, any legitimate inheritance plan must contain the legal  strand.

In my case, the relevant flash drives, PIN to HW pgp keys and detailed instruction will be handed over to heir by me in person,  while he will get the envelope with those physical pgp keys  from representatives of the legal service I have contracted with.

While I don't fully agree with your trust in the USB keys Smiley (even if they're 3 of them), I do think that this "inheritance model" is better than the lock time approach.

Are we indeed talking about a significant amount that deserves the hassle of paid legal service, or are you talking about a hypothetical future scenario? (Clearly, you don't have to answer me on this, it's something you have to think/answer to yourself, you know..)

Yes, but after a few people start working on it, then the site that hosts it stops being a central point of failure. If the authorities shut it down, any contributor can set up an instance of the same repository; they have the repo stored in their computer.

I guess that I'm missing something, since imho we have the same now: any contributor can upload his local files and start a new git. ...Just the change history will be gone.

On the other hand... I was thinking on forks of git where we take advantage of blockchains and... surprise, I've found out that there are already such projects, like GitTorrent where "Git objects are retrieved via the BitTorrent protocol and references are stored in Bitcoin transactions"[1], or Git-Ssb (using Secure Scuttlebutt), or Mango "which combines Ethereum with IPFS or Swarm as a backend for Git"[1]

Maybe other options are also there and this can be a next step. However, considering rather unlikely the scenario Bitcoin git ever gets threatened by US govt, I expect the devs will just leave it on GitHub for convenience.

In practice, I maintain three cloned Tails flash drives and three hardware keys, each serving as a backup for the others.

I welcome any constructive criticism regarding potential points of failure or unknown vulnerabilities in my system.

It's an interesting setup and I kinda like it. And 3 copies sounds good.

Still... flash drives can get corrupted a bit too easy for my liking. I mean I had to reformat or throw away at least 10 USB disks in the last 20 years... and we're talking about very long time here, right?
This is the issue with electronic devices. They can get broken easier than more physical stuff.

I will add that age or an accident or stroke can make you forget the passwords/PINs you've used there.

These are the weak spots I've seen.
49  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Can what happened to Samourai Wallet happen to Electrum ? on: May 05, 2024, 06:38:47 PM
You can run your own GitLab instance.

You can indeed install and run your own git server. But that will be just another centralized server to host the source code.

But for example a much better use of those idiotic inscriptions would be to store a snapshot/zip of bitcoin source code for every tag/release also on the blockchain.
Then seizing GitHub would set back everything only one step back (actually even less, since the devs prolly have their sources locally).
50  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What can we do to make Bitcoin hit $100k on: May 05, 2024, 01:51:04 PM
Is there anything we could do??

In theory, yes: advertise Bitcoin, get more businesses accept it, improve it (from useful ideas to actual implementation). The more people and businesses understand that Bitcoin is not for geeks, scammers and drug addicts, the more will buy it, hence making it more expensive.

In reality: wait patiently. Time handles it all. There is a very good chance bitcoin will hit 100k in the next 20 months with or without your help (just please don't take this as an advice to buy, do as you think).

53  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The Role of Proof of Reserves in Crypto Exchange Transparency on: May 04, 2024, 05:49:02 PM
This is where "proof of reserves" comes in. An exchange hires an independent auditor to check their wallets and make sure there's enough money to pay back all customers. The auditor provides cryptographic proof, which anyone can publicly verify.

Proof of reserves is a powerful advertising trick, and not much more. The independent audit may or may not exist, or not be independent at all. The funds everybody can see can be easily used to back other parts or loans on behalf of the business and when the things go wrong the users will probably find out that they are the last ones in queue for getting a "breadcrumb" of the same funds as - way too many others....

(Note:  If this takes more than $1,000,000 to implement, please ignore!)

This alone worth +2 merit Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Newbies so often start threads and then abandon their account when conversations do not go their way.   Then other newbies come along and reply to the OP that hasn't been online for weeks.

It would be nice to have a notice near the name if the user has not logged in a while.  i.e: (Inactive for 6 days).  Could just be for newbies, or for every topic starter.

The warning "This post is xx days old!" does not address this issue.

Sadly this will not help in 98% of the cases. Many, even older members, post without reading. Many answer to the title and don't even read the content. And so on, and so on.
And the very few ones who would maybe notice that "flag" under the OP name... would be stopped also by a "This post is xx days old!" warning.

And yes, as some said, there are valid cases the discussion can just go on.

BPIP extension from a new team, after you left that project, has it for the extension users because I saw some people made screenshots with Inactive, DT1, DT2 badge.

I strongly believe that Vod knows that and his topic is about newbies/newcomcomers, not about the ones who stay around for long enough to find out about the BPIP extension.

56  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: generating seed phrases offline and which wallets support custom passprhases? on: May 04, 2024, 05:26:24 PM
Hi. I have two questions.

How could I safely generate custom seed phrases offline, and which tools are good for this operation?

What software supports generating seed phrases with  custom passphrases, and in which software wallets such phrases could be imported?

One of the best methods I was told of was the one that uses /dev/urandom and a copy of Ian Coleman's tool on an offline Linux machine:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5475496.msg63228430#msg63228430
This returns standard BIP39 seed and all proper wallets that work with seed will accept it.

Another, much easier method is to create a new seed with Electrum wallet. But this will work only on Electrum.
On the other hand, Sparrow wallet creates BIP39 seed, but it's not as widely available as Electrum or the first method I've linked.

Flipping a coin or rolling a dice is also a method, but you better search on the forum because it seems it's pretty easy to do it wrong.

Of course, hardware wallets also generate BIP39 standard seed, but some of them have lately... trust issues.

PS. Ian Coleman's tool also does this, but afaik in-browser random generator is not considered good enough for the job. That's why method 1 uses /dev/urandom separately.
57  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Edward Snowden Final Warning for Bitcoin on: May 04, 2024, 01:17:31 PM
Is privacy good for Bitcoin?

In theory, yes.  However, it's impossible to tell how governments and regulators will react.  Plus, it's all largely moot if the majority of users are simply handing their funds and their personally identifiable information over to total strangers in the internet (KYC'd exchanges) to hold onto anyway.  Some people just can't be helped.

I think that Bitcoin still doesn't have privacy built-in at protocol level exactly because a certain type of reaction from governments and regulators is expected.
And, sadly, I think that because of this we will never have privacy built-in... or we will have it only when something will change (greatly) in the ways the governments "see" the things. Sad

Bitcoin's future seems to be ETF and KYC. I hope I'm wrong though.
58  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: If you have $200,000,but no miners, no mining experience, and no cheap electricit on: May 04, 2024, 01:06:12 PM
If I were you, I wouldn't start a mining business but I would trade with Bitcoin. Check trading charts and you'll understand how profitable trading can be if you are not in rush. With one or two successful trade in a year, you can make a decent profit.

Trading tends to be profitable for newbies when the trend is upwards, but let's be honest, it's even riskier than mining.
Of course, with enough coolness and good starting funds (which OP does have), it's achievable, at least in theory.
However, like mining, holding too is long term thing and imho it's the less risky, especially if we talk about more than 4 years time frame.

But I guess the answers depend a lot on the profile of the one responding - miners will suggest mining, traders will suggest trading, and the rest will suggest holding Wink
I can agree though: OP lacks the experience and this comes with even bigger risk.
59  Economy / Economics / Re: How safe is it to keep your money and gold underground? on: May 04, 2024, 12:46:16 PM
Even though plastic will take longer to be eroded still it can be more over rats love to party with such stuffs so don't even think it as a safe way to keep your money. It's better if you buy a safe deposit box which can be cost around a couple hundred dollars and serves the same purpose.

But I don't understand the idea behind saving the fiat, which is worse the inflation will eat everything you saved.

Yes of a Truth it's unwise to believe that saving money on plastic material because money don't need to be static were good Air is not entering even if is gold certain Air is need in moderation because rust can attack. The best in any currency most fiat is to deposit where it can be move from one hand to another from there it can be of more durable that keeping in one medium because moisture can damage it or other things.

In various countries the fiat money already contains plastic or it's "printed" on plastic and then it's not that problematic. But yes, water and mold can be an issue if it's paper and/or cotton fiber. Then, at least in Europe under certain amounts the bank deposits are "insured by the state" hence safer, plus, the small interest they bring can cover a part of what's lost by inflation.

So, no matter how much we hate the banks, the system is built in a way that they are best suited for keeping the fiat money, not some random holes in the ground.
