81  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mixers and their reason to exist in the bitcoin ecosystem on: April 07, 2024, 04:01:34 PM
Admittedly I've never made any transactions that I would feel need mixing...

This being said... well, sorry to say, but "you know nothing, Jon Snow".
Imho mixers have their use for people more privacy conscious than you.

Of course, my initial part was a bit harsh, some points you posted are real and known. You don't (ever!) know for what is behind a centralized service, including mixers and imho CoinJoin coordinator too. Heck, even Electrun servers are spying on us nowadays.

But for some, taking a risk is necessary. I still remember a post from somebody who was struggling to hide his coins from somebody hollowing every move in his wallet and threatening him. Would you still consider a mixer bad in such a case?

Yes, there's always a risk that some idiots may consider those coins of you "tainted", a risk some are willing to take and some not. But the fact they may be govt honeypots?! Well, if the govt is after you... you better start using proper privacy coins instead of mixers... (and not because mixers would be honeypots!!)
82  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Need mentorship on: April 07, 2024, 03:49:35 PM
I crave learning the technical aspects of Bitcoin.

As already said, learnmeabitcoin.com is a good start.
I advise you play around on testnet as much as you can and... start asking here exact, specific questions. You'll get answers (some better than others) and directions. I think that this is the most realistic way to move forward.

84  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Need some ideas on: April 06, 2024, 09:15:28 PM
Explain how to RBF (replace by fee) and when they should use it.

I think that CPFP should also be in the list.

And, as some have also mentioned, cold storage is a must. And it can be done easily with an USB stick and a Tails OS, no need to anything more fancy.

Adding extra words after a seed could be also interesting. Maybe also multi-sig.

And back to things I didn't see suggested: the derivation paths may worth a close look too.
Also people learning how to use a block explorer - for fees, for checking whether a tx has unconfirmed parents and how far, maybe other things too - is a must.
Dust amounts, transaction size and its cost based on size, or coin control are also useful topics.
85  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 2 cold wallets for my crypto assets on: April 06, 2024, 08:48:48 PM
I see OP has asked the same question in many places, to make all the discussion even more confusing (even for himself).
I will cross-post my answer:

Could you please tell me, knowledgeable people, would it be possible to place my crypto assets on both devices at the same time and, if yes, then, if for example my Nano X would get hacked, Tangem will still have them? Or, if they are gone from one wallet they'd be gone from all cold wallets, because hacker would authorise transactions for me?

OK, you misunderstood the bitcoin wallets, so let me try to explain.
The bitcoins are not in a bitcoin wallet. Ever. They are (let's say it simple) on the blockchain.
The wallet only holds the KEYS to the bitcoins. The key to spend them, more exactly. Only who has the correct keys for certain bitcoins can spend them (send them away).
And yes, the wallet helps you do certain operations with your keys - usually this means facilitating the spending.

So, if 2 hardware wallets have the same seed will generate the same keys and any of them can be used to spend.
If somebody else will get the seed he will spend/send away all the bitcoins (that can be spent by your keys, so "your" bitcoins) so you no longer have access to them, no matter how many hardware wallets you hold.

Clearer?

87  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Be cautious when copying wallet addresses on: April 06, 2024, 08:38:06 PM
I would suggest using a phone or system you don't usually use to browse the web to hold your coins or better still an Hardware wallet.

Clipboard malware is amongst us for quite some years. People should read a little, really, else their money can go away very fast.
The easiest way to handle it is to simply double check the address you paste vs the address you've copied. Full check, not only the first and last few characters, since there are some smarter versions too that try to make look alike vanity addresses.

And about using an old phone, it's not the best idea. Just read this old thread: Old phone as cold storage?
The thing is that you cannot be 100% sure the phone is indeed airgapped.

I think you are trying  to make reference to an Airgapped device, although you can create your Airgapped devices  using some PC with a secure OS

If you are on a PC or laptop, even historically "not that safe/secure" OS like Windows will do, as long as the device will remain always airgapped.
The thing is that you better use an OS you're familiar with, so you don't make extra mistakes and also never (!) ever go online with the airgapped device, even for a second.

93  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is the halving already priced in? on: April 06, 2024, 05:49:48 AM
Considering that BTC is in a new ATH, I wonder if the halving is already priced in? If that's the case, then market prices will remain relatively the same post-halving. Don't you think?

I'd say it greatly depends on how you look at it.
Technically I think that we can consider halving priced in, but then we trivialize/almost ignore the buying pressure coming from ETFs.
And of course, if we take only ETF into account, then we can say that halving is not priced in.
I'd say the truth is somewhere in the middle and neither halving, not ETF are fully priced in, hence the price will keep rising.
Just don't expect miracles in the halving day. Maybe blatant market manipulation, but that's also uncertain.

PS. This may be more appropriate for speculation, don't you think?
94  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Good bitcoin security starts with strong PC and mobile device security on: April 06, 2024, 05:38:56 AM
When it comes to securing your bitcoin don't forget about having good basic security practices on your laptop, desktop and mobile devices.

Actually no.
If you want proper security for your coins you have to start with a setup where the seed or private key(s) never get into the online world.
This means hardware wallet, or an offline computer or signing device, but also means the seed backups are done and stored properly (offline, pen and paper, ..)

Imho the second step is a good practice, eg double check all the characters of an address when you send coins or when you paste "your" address anywhere.

Of course, some local security is welcome on the computer or smartphone the watch wallet is on, but, as you see, it's not the first in the list.

I see people were talking also about privacy.
Imho the talks about proper privacy of the wallet should start with a local Bitcoin Core. Else, if one uses a public server for his light wallet, his addresses can be linked and his privacy may be gone even if he uses Tor, just because at some point in the past he may have been using a CEX.
95  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network: A failure? on: April 06, 2024, 05:27:58 AM
What do you think? Is the LN a failure? If not, why? Should we give it more time to mature? What is the main reason most exchanges, merchants and/or businesses haven't adopted it yet?

I think that we are simply just too early.
Crypto exchanges are just slowly starting to adopt LN (of course, it's a balance between earning some extra money as withdrawal fees and making withdrawals - and deposits - smoother).
Afaik LN is still labeled beta. This also doesn't help, but, since LN is still not out of problems... yeah...

The point is that a solution is necessary if we want bitcoin used as a currency by everybody. One path would be to fix LN and help it get mature. Another path would be finding/inventing other alternatives (on and off chain).

LN is not a scaling solution its a bitcoin abandonment scheme
LN is not a solution its a flawed niche network for people to syphon funds from each other using IOU

You are anti-LN and extremely harsh. You are not so far from truth, yet, not actually true either.
All service providers tried and try to offer IOUs. See PayPal and Revolut. Or remember that people kept Xapo wallets because "sending money" to each other (off chain, Xapo to Xapo) was free. I think that's now the same with Binance (and Binance Pay).

But LN needs actual Bitcoin locked for the channel. Yes, LN uses it's own units, the fact they are called Bitcoin is only convenience, and easy math because the channels are built with bitcoins.
On the other hand, it's far better than sending the bitcoins to an exchange then spend whatever odd wrapped bitcoin (i.e. IOUs on a completely unrelated blockchain).

All in all, my opinion is that LN just needs more time.
Maybe forum tips or signature campaigns offering LN payments could get LN used more at least in our community, as a form of support. Maybe...
96  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Setup Ledger without Ledger Live! on: April 04, 2024, 05:39:34 PM
I just hope Ledger will not come up with some nasty ideas to stop this guy.
I don't think they can. Ledger Live is an open-source software. That license gives everyone the right to play around with it, modify it to their liking, and make it publicly available for others to use. If they try to stop that, they are scumbags. But I don't see this becoming too big for it be seen as a threat to Ledger's business model and something they'll try to stop because it's affecting their sales.

I know what (F)OSS means. But is also the firmware or the apps also open source? Is he allowed to get them and install them himself?
As long as their HW sales go well, he is harmless, of course. But if the overall sentiment on Ledger products is similar to what I know on Bitcointalk bitcoin areas,... then those sales may not look that good... And if Ledger is planning to milk some money from, .. I don't know, advertising and "special offers" in LL, then he may start to matter.
Of course, as usual, I hope I'm wrong.
97  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Setup Ledger without Ledger Live! on: April 03, 2024, 04:51:06 PM
This is still early Proof of Concept, and there are plans to make updates in future

Since it's open source, there are chances for becoming a great tool.. when it will also offer updates too (even if only for Bitcoin). The only problem I see is that this has to get out of PoC fast, else he may end up with no "customers" "thanks" to the "great" ways Ledger is "attracting" customers in the last few years...

...I just hope Ledger will not come up with some nasty ideas to stop this guy.
