362  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Idea: Ledger as seed generator? on: November 25, 2023, 06:26:20 PM
So you are going to keep using the ledger as your wallet, because I thought it was only going to be used for seed generation then import the seed into some other wallet because you/we agree Ledger is no more to be trusted for storing cryptos.

Am I confusing, what you are trying to say? Roll Eyes

No, it was only an example.
I no longer want to keep funds on the Ledger, but I fear that most other wallets (and hardware wallets) will not like (i.e. accept) Electrum - generated seed, hence... I want to try to use Ledger as generator.
Sorry if I was not clear in the previous post Wink
363  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Idea: Ledger as seed generator? on: November 25, 2023, 05:48:05 PM
But I don't see any difference at all between a seed created in a way like you said and in an offline electrum wallet or any other wallet, which means the Ledger is obsolete here and we don't need it anyway for random generation of our seeds.

A seed made with Electrum didn't work on Ledger. Electrum has its own standard. That's why.
If there would not be that "restriction" then I'd agree with you, Electrum would have been just fine for the job.
364  Other / Meta / Re: These degenerates don't wanna quit.. is there a way out? on: November 25, 2023, 05:43:50 PM
GIVE US 2FA THEYMOS... !!!!!

No. Why would he put effort into it? Because you are not capable to set a safe password and keep it safe? Maybe you were too busy with your own problems (caused by yourself, let's be clear), but the vast majority of the users never got their BTT account hacked.
And I'll continue: if you go on this kind of weak security, there's a good chance your accounts will be hacked also with 2FA present, because you'll keep 2FA on the same device where you are browsing from, or, even worse, keep the 2FA backup codes together with the password.

Edit: signing a massage on my with my address?? Does that help?

I hope you meant message.  Grin

Now more seriously, it depends... how safe you keep your private key or seed?
If at least these are actually safe then yes, it should help.
365  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Idea: Ledger as seed generator? on: November 25, 2023, 05:31:06 PM
This should have been coming for quite a while, but I was so busy I didn't have time to post as much as I'd like and I didn't have the time to give this a good thinking.
I wrote here and there, using a Tails stick is 90% of the time a good solution for me, but I've used my Ledger for simplicity.
Of course (not surprisingly) I no longer trust my Ledger to keep more than 100$ worth of BTC on it and since I still get some earnings from signatures... I want to go away from my Ledger before it's too late.

On the other hand, I also don't want to have Electrum-specific seed, for example because I'm eyeing SeedSigner for the future.

I've been reading different topics on coin and dice based seeds and, after weighting various possibilities (like use random generator for better dice generation) I've came back to this post, which I tend to agree more and more:

1. Leave cryptography to the cryptographers.  Seriously.  Please.  For your safety and the safety of others.

Generating your own random numbers is low-level crypto.  >99% of programmers should never, ever touch low-level crypto directly.  This is not to insult your intelligence:  The smartest programmers in this space all either study up on their cryptography, or leave cryptography to the cryptographers.  Studying cryptography takes lots of smarts; knowing the limits of your own knowledge also takes lots of smarts.

And now the idea: why don't just use Ledger (only!) as seed generator?
I mean: reset Ledger as a new device, write down the new seed, reset it again (because it's unsafe), and I'm done.
Is it anything I've missed? Is this also unsafe for a reason I've missed?

(Was this already discussed and I've missed that?)
366  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: someone pays 83.65 $BTC ($3,136,058) in transaction fees, overpaying by 120,258 on: November 25, 2023, 01:59:42 PM
My assumption: that dude was either totally hammered drunk, was under some illegal substance, was just totally tired, or is one of the most careless people in the entire world. Even if you were in a total rush to send a transaction, there's no way someone would be okay with paying that high of a fee.

My assumption is that he used some odd custom tool (probably made by himself) for the tx and that tool has no warning for high fees, plus it probably doesn't state it clearly what is the amount to transfer and what is the fee.
The user has been probably using it for a couple of times correctly and now has filled the data wrong.

Some always think they can do better than the known wallets ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
367  Economy / Speculation / Re: Should I still hold the investment or sell it? on: November 25, 2023, 01:18:51 PM
I am sharing the matter in the forum whether I should hold on to my investment or sell it now.

Well, you're doing it wrong Grin I mean, what answers you expect to get from a Bitcoin forum?  Grin
So, I will start with the fact that you should decide for yourself. You should not handle your finances by random advises over the internet.

This being said, my opinion is to wait. There's a good chance you've bought in a pretty good moment, you know that there are big expectations for the following year.
Bitcoin halving tends to come with a bull run (or FOMO bubble) and a better strategy would be to wait until bitcoin price doubles (at least).
At that point you can sell some to get back the fiat you've invested so you have the peace of mind you need and stop asking this kind of questions. This is important because, if you read back, Bitcoin history has its bull runs, its bear market periods and also its "crypto winter" months; then this peace of mind will be very important so you don't chicken out and sell, so you can enjoy the future bull runs too.

Of course, I may be wrong; that's why you should decide for yourself.
368  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: My encrypted private key touched iCloud on: November 25, 2023, 11:00:30 AM
What advice could you give me now ? Should I recreate a cold private key or my security was actually not too much compromised ?

I will start with something simple, that should answer your initial questions: "there's no cloud, it's just somebody else's computer" (actually server, but yeah).
As advice, I have the feeling you use electrum connected to the internet anyway, so the actual advice would be: get yourself a hardware wallet before it's too late. And yeah, generate (there too) brand new wallet.

370  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is it possible to mine bitcoin with my laptop? on: November 23, 2023, 07:11:12 PM
So, can I mine bitcoin on a laptop?

You cannot mine bitcoin with your laptop alone. Bitcoin difficulty is too big and you will never find anything, just waste electricity.
You should read a little in here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2415854.0
PS. Your question may belong to mining or beginners, but not technical area, maybe you consider moving this topic, see bottom-left

Now, if you want to learn about mining you can seek some altcoins with low difficulty or ASIC resistant. Meaning ask in altcoins mining section. (Even pool mining for Monero may work).
Just keep in mind that:
* you will most probably get no profit at all off all this
* mining means heavy use of your CPU and possibly GPU (depending on the coin and the hardware you have), preferably 24/7. Laptops are not meant for such use, hence you risk burning it (and possibly your home too), or, with proper (extra) ventilation you will just shorten the life of your laptop's components

This is how I see it.
371  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC technology and the need for referral codes/links. on: November 23, 2023, 06:49:37 PM
Your thoughts are welcomed!

Referrals are pretty much a waste of time for most normal people, but a great business for those who want advertising.
But since Bitcoin itself has no revenue, it has no means to offer any kind of direct benefits for advertising it.
Until here you are right. But there are things you have missed:

* There are plenty of businesses of all kinds around bitcoin and many of them advertise themselves or sometimes, even bitcoin itself. Some as referral revenue, some by ads or posts on social media.

* Every bitcoin holder (and they aren't few) knows that the more people they attract to get interested into bitcoin and become holders, the more the price will grow (not immediately, but still...) hence their investment becomes more profitable. They will advertise bitcoin "for free". And as example, just look at M. Saylor's posts and apparitions.

* Bitcoin price has a cycle of ups and downs. When the price goes up, Bitcoin fills the newspaper pages, bringing a new wave of investors. Some will FOMO and maybe even sell cheap some years later, some will use their brains and do better, some will remain holders and will enrich the ecosystem and may advertise bitcoin themselves.

Imho we are past the days we need every bit of advertising. Bitcoin is already known my media, investors, financial institutions.
So no, imho it doesn't worth going on that path, not for bitcoin itself. For a new bitcoin related business, .. that's a different story.

Grin

Feedback:
I am watching Satochip for more than a year, but while the design is nice - I like a lot the card format to keep data -, I don't feel safe enough with hardware wallets with no screen, you know.
The design was never bad, but this Bitcointalk one is gorgeous. The quote is my favorite from Satoshi, so it is wonderful as collectible (even if I would have no problem with hw without screen, I still like it too much to start actually using it  Smiley ).
I am pretty sure that this idea can bring nice income to Satochip for custom profiles and quotes and that's even better.
All this being said, I feel like this beauty could also fit nicely as SeedKeeper (exactly because it's more a collectible).
374  Other / Archival / Re: 1miau, meow why so serious? on: November 23, 2023, 05:58:56 PM

So instead of being happy you didn't draw enough attention to get even more negative trust.. you do this.
Now you've got my answer. And some of the days I have more time you may get the trust rating too, if you want it so badly.

[free raffle] Mastering Bitcoin book

* "Test our new Bitcoin wallet (iOS) and earn $20 in Bitcoin" l-am sters ca nu mai are activitate din septembrie
* "Utopia P2P Ecosystem 💎 Poker Client - Review Campaign 🔎" l-am sters ca este pe pauza de aproape o luna
* "[Competition]: The Signature End... - Prize: 2mBTC" se pare ca s-a terminat fara castigator

Sunt in dubiu daca la cardul Unijoin ultima "ridicare de mana" este o inscriere valida sau nu (cred ca nu).
378  Economy / Reputation / Re: [Discussion] Bitcointalk Community Awards 🏆 on: November 19, 2023, 04:52:11 PM
Hello friends everyone.

The next annual voting will be launched very soon! I would like to consult with you and find out what would be best for the community! What do you think is better... to divide $7000 between the winners, or to give away 30 cold wallets to the winners and give away another 40 cold wallets among the community?.

While cold wallets can be great collectibles, memories or even used by some, I agree with BlackHatCoiner, it's better if people decide and handle cold storage/HW themselves.
Plus, money tends to be a better prize, it's more private (one needs to post a wallet address, not a postal one) and can be used for whatever the winner wants it to.

On the other hand, if we pick the money option, the voters/community may get nothing and of course, an incentive would get more voters/votes (of course, abuses too).
But you have a good experience with people, I am sure you'll find the best approach.
379  Economy / Economics / Re: ~85% of money doesn't exist on: November 19, 2023, 04:43:15 PM
Of course, increasing the monetary supply results in us, individual people, having to face higher prices which means our money is worth less.

Keep in mind that fiat money is actually central banks' IOUs.

By knowing that, in my eyes all those numbers actually don't mean much: a country (or entity) abcd can make as many trillions of xyz coin as they wish as long as it doesn't affect too much the international relations (eg EU countries usually have an agreed max inflation allowed/politically discussed) or the population doesn't start riots because xyz worth today much less than yesterday, hence they actually see they are being stolen from.

All the rest we see is complicated operations to hide from the common plebs that they are trying to "create value" out of thin air... by actually stealing that value from everybody involved in using those IOUs.

And yes, I've chosen the name xyz for the currency to not fool everybody about its "value" or "price". So when one uses a country's currency, he actually (blindly or even unwillingly) must trust that country's central bank that it will not be eroding (stealing) too much of the initial (at the point of acquisition) value of the currency.

Keep this in mind next time someone says anything about bitcoin.

Bitcoin, apart of a great tech and a great investment for those who go on that route, it's also something that has opened the eyes of many about what a huge fraud the fiat money is.
Keep that in mind next time...  Wink
380  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is your solution to pay less Fee ? on: November 19, 2023, 04:25:38 PM
Hello dear members of BitcoinTalk

I do use Blockchain wallet to make Transaction as it has lower fee but recently the fees are very high
so i have to pay around 15-20$ per Transaction even if  i send 10 $

What is your solution to pay less Fee ?

thank you for your time if you do help me

My typical solution is to avoid sending unnecessarily too many on-chain transactions.
Yes, this usually means to also have some funds here and there in custodian wallets. And for you it would also mean to consider using LN for 10$ transactions (the on-chain fee doesn't depend on the amount of value you are sending).
I've also made my homework some time ago by consolidating the funds/transactions where possible.
And as said, for on-chain tx, ViaBTC accelerator is your friend. And a huge lot of patience.

However, as a disclaimer, I know it's easier to give advises than following them: in the past few weeks I didn't need to spend much, so my advice is based on my past actions (it's not the first time the fees go up "too much"; it's even not the worse situation we've ever had).
