In situations where people need to hold XMR for a significant period of time (e.g. a merchant waiting for his escrowed XMR to be released, or someone using XMR to go between government currencies when traveling), they will want to be able to hedge against losses measured in EUR or USD or CNY. If we want to support an external project, perhaps we should consider one that allows them to do this easily and fluidly.
So you suggest we make sure to have an easy hedging solution by the time FreeBazaar is finished (a finish-to-finish dependancy, as it is called in projec management)? Am I reading it right? If yes, I consider this requires diverting financing and energy to the search of such tool. Do you have any lead?

I turned 30K HYP into 80K HYP in 200 Hours
I redirected my S4C to there yesterday, so 25% of my stake go there. I will probably make less than you, but I like to automated way to do so. Now it would be even better if presstab fixed the issue with S4C picking a random block and turn it into a working compilation Cool

A question though: 30*6=60. Whence this 80K?

So when you won that 77,175.1936 bet you won 0.1472 overall Huh

Hmmm seems to me that it would have been better to keep the coin age and stake it  Cheesy  Wink
I only took coins with less than 1 day of age Smiley
404  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][HYP] HyperStake | 750% PoS | Most Advanced Coin Control Wallet | 6 Themes on: January 04, 2015, 08:41:33 PM
So when you won that 77,175.1936 bet you won 0.1472 overall Huh

The problem with the strategy of doubling after every loss is that it's possible to either run out of money or hit the bet limit of the casino.  That's a lot on the line for a 0.1472 win.
That's exactly it. This is why you shall be careful with announcements of winning big. Basically, martingale means that you will play longer; that's all. Wikipedia tells us that the martingale theory (first invented by a French mathematician) was popularised by a casino owner who wanted people to stay longer in his casino (and so spend more on drinks and such). Martingale won't make you win more on an average, it will just extend the game - and if you extend it too much, you will lose, because the house always win, thus the sayng "martinfail".

Still, if you can leave before hitting the two barriers you mentionned, you can make a profit. I did, I earnt around 70 HYP in 4 hours

Speaking of casino, here's how investment (the other part of the game) works on LuckyAlt (the last paragraphe is pasted straight from just-dice - which is fine, just funny)

https://luckyalt.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/474165-how-does-investing-work
Quote
When you invest you are helping fulfill the bankroll of the site.
Based on the % of bankroll that you fulfill you will be paid on all site earnings.
Your cut of the site earning is 90%.
Which means you will split 90% of all earnings between all the investors and yourself.
The amount you receive out of that 90% is based on the % of bankroll that you are fulfilling.
The more you invest the higher your % of the bankroll that you fill.

Although we have a 2% house edge, and in the long run will earn a profit of 2% of the wagered amount, in the short to medium term we can still lose money. In times when we are lucky, we win many bets and earn a larger-than-expected profit, and in unlucky times we earn less than expected, and can even lose out. This is especially so if someone comes in and makes a large number of massive bets; we can either gain a lot or lose a lot. If you believe that the potential gains do not outweigh the potential losses, please do not invest.

If Poloniex and Bter and Hitbtc can figure out how to detect XMR deposits and send XMR, then the groundwork has basically been done. There are a bunch of marketplaces that would be accepting XMR right now, such as Cryptsy, that aren't accepting XMR simply because it's not super-easy for them to figure it out.
But not publicly documented - and this what we want.
TheKoziTwo, as far as I remember, Poloniex got massive inspiration from your code at cryptonote.exchange.to for inclusion in Poloniex (and swaphole too). Could you prepare some documentation, that the community would happily polish?

I sweated. A lot. I could hear my heart beating. I had to refill TWICE.
But I did it

Lesson taken (again). These 100K HYP are now Invested in Luckyalt.

Willy from LuckyAlt/HYP just released a reward program for HYP - up to 3000 HYP for free if you invite friends: here.

Remember this is not only about getting some more HYP. It is also about gaining some visibility by having some use - casino is a beginning.

I propose we share our screenshots like I did. Biggest wins, bizarre wins, losses at investing (I'm presently negative, I suspect Zeewolf is responsible for it Smiley, etc.

OK so... I need 20 days on average to get 20% interest on my coins. If I place 1000 HYP on luckyalt, I must get a profit of at least 200 HYP after 20 days to make it more interesting than stacking (keeping in mind that these HYP do not secure the network and that I basically trust a stranger with my money). Let's see how it goes.

I really like LuckyAlt. Will (the owner) is reactive; you can invest or divest whenever you want; he is working presently on making sure you can reuse a deposit address with S4C - that way, you can invest regularly or play without fear of running permanently broke (you just have to wait for the next stake). Finally, with multisend coming, this means you can send a part of your stake for cashing out ("stake-and-cash") at Poloniex, and another part to LuckyAlt for investing/playing.

I really like it when the advantages of HyperStake are being used.
409  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: January 04, 2015, 03:05:09 PM
I would call the main goal of the first step to do a freebazaar platform, corresponded with the OB state at the deadline moment (ca.a month), with using Monero as a means of paying. in reality, the more detailed plan can be only made
1) after we choose what the direction to go: own way or confluence into OB.
I'm going to discuss this point with donators, their thoughts, suggestions.., to contact OB devs
2) as well as after learning and analysing the whole OB code, its functions. that will take me a while, we want the thing to be stable and secure.

OB has got about 260 open bugs actually, some of them I will have to fix to get monero parts working. but I also suppose, the most complicated part will be developing of well-operating monero escrow without multisig.

I won't integrate the market in any GUI wallet.but I realize a communiation with monero wallets via API.
to core devs: will be there any API to mymonero?
I agree you smooth as esrow and the final arbiter

I updated the post about donations with what I understood of your plans (and I also added you as a support for smooth to be an escrow):

Quote
Proposed timeline

1. Decide whether FreeBazaar will fork from OpenBazaar or will start from scratch (to be discussed with both FreeBazaar donators and OpenBazaar developpers)
2. Analyse OpenBazaar's source code
3. Develop a reliable monero escrow system without multisig
4. Develop an API for integration with Monero wallets (including if possible mymonero)
Please confirm I understood correctly and add anything I may have missed.

When choosing a mixin of zero, you do not use mixins and your transaction becomes traceable. You still use stealth addresses no matter what, so that the receiver may choose to retain their unlinkability and untraceability when in the future they decide to use the money they have received. To retain your own personal unlinkability and untraceability, this would best be done using two wallets. Have the sender, who chooses to use a zero mixin (Example: Poloniex), send the funds to a one-time wallet created by yourself that you control, and then send those funds to your personal wallet with funds you wish to keep unlinkable and untraceable.
The forthcoming MRL-0004 will address this issue by recommending mixing values strictly above 2 ("3 to 5"). Then, no need for two wallets (terminology: MRL doesn't enforce, core team does; MRL merely recommends).

So, as far as 'fully anonymous' goes, I would say that is only a part of Monero, and not the entire deal.
Yep: Q: How can Monero be both anonymous and transparent at the same time?. Plus scalability and decentralisation, as well as more goals that are not yet fully defined.

I don't think we have a tutorial for services willing to add Monero, like a casino (such as DirectBet) or an exchange (such as Poloniex). Could someone start one?

Hi,

I am the manager of Malla mois (Bitcoin 'castle' - yes, I know it means "manor", not "castle") near Rakvere and I will be in Tallin the 10th and 11th of January. I would like to take advantage of the opportunity to meet cryptocurrency enthusiasts in the location of your choice. We'll talk about Bitcoin in Estonia (including Rakvere) and, since I also am core dev for Monero, I'll be delighted to introduce you to this fully private crypto and to answer any question.
You can PM to arrange anything you'd prefer not to make public.

I am very pleased with how Callixtus is handling the Prieuré Hotel. I then decided to promote him Vicar General, effective immediately. He will handle the daily maintenance of the Church and the tactical decision for its extension. Meanwhile, I will remain in charge of the strategic orientation, such as the various Ecclesiastical Orders and the increase of visibility of moneritos.

(out of game; no need to create a new character - Callixtus is responsible for the Church account)

For the MEW site I was only given the standard drupal blackend login to site #1, but to create and/or modify any theme to our needs I would need FTP access, which I wasn't given. Now you and arctice mine are talking about site URL #2. If I'm going to work on the MEW site there needs to be at least 1 site consistancy, I would need FTP access and potentially DB access ( ie phpmyadmin) if we want to add any custom uses to the site. Also for content we should not have single pages that cover 10 topics and thousand+ words, that needs to be broken down and organized. With that being said I hope I would have some influence to the actual content posted as well.

We can take this discussion back to PMs if you like or keep it all public, up to you.
Artic Mine is finalizing the migration. FTP will be part of it, as will DB access if deemed necessary and doable. Site #1 is just the previous server and will be dropped eventually, so no need to worry for inconsitencies.

I agree that there should not be a single page. I was just posting some quick article, everything had to be retought design-wise, sorry if I did not make it clear.

Regarding content being posted, you'll have opportunity to voice opinion and we could even open blogs on the website (Drupal makes it easy to create various blogs for various persons), which would allow even more latitude in what you'd write.

Since this is getting technical, let's move back to PM. Anyone interested can join the conversation - just ask for it and you will be added to PM.

419  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: January 03, 2015, 10:49:48 AM
The default transparent ledger (btc) and the default private ledger (xmr) are like a yin-yang combo. But if you think about it, aren't XMR's use-cases far heavier? A transparent ledger is great for charity fundraising and aid distribution, crowdfunding, public funds, etc. where we want everyone to see everything. But a private ledger is more appropriate for private wealth storage, cross-border corporate finance, offshore banking, etc.
With viewkey and future auditable addresses, Monero could handle all the transparent ledger use cases you are describing. The dev fund already has the view key for doing so (see OP). Granted, this is all theoretical for the moment since there is no independant tool for using a viewkey (sole exception being MyMonero-created addresses).

So basically, what Bitcoin does, Monero can (eventually) do it too. And then more.

What people think happens:
Bitcoin: you must be transparent
Monero: you must be anonymous

What really happens:
Bitcoin: you must be transparent
Monero: you can be transparent

Something to remember when promoting Monero. Promoting privacy matters. But promoting choice matters too and maybe more.

Tacotime, smooth or whoever is in charge of running the monero.cc website. Would you like me to help making it look a little more aesthetically appealing? I can't develop wallet code or anything, but I can make some website improvements.
The design is ready for quite some time (and, no, I won't give you the URL of the new website Smiley) We just need to add more content first
This exchange happened a while ago.
Something different is in the way now. It won't make the previous statement obsolete, it is just different.
420  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: January 03, 2015, 10:30:22 AM
I would like to add this:

Monero FAQ: Why is a private currency important?

I want to believe you but it would be easier if you could source your claims. Any link?
Obvious most discussion and information exchange about operating serious Dark Markets is private.
But what can be offered as "proof" or source:
Thank you very much. I keep this post for future reference.

Escrow, donation: I updated the list. G2M, since you did not mention you asked for escrow, I assume your donation will be unconditional - correct me if I'm wrong.

Monero*--a decentralized anonymous currency.

Freebazaar*--a decentralized market for Monero that IS NOT part of the official GUI.

*The devs are not responsible for the use of this technology for good or evil--especially since one man's evil is another man's good and vice versa depending on where, when and how you live.
FreeBazaar is an external project and any progress being made on it will be listed under the "external projects" section of the missives. External projects are projects the core team has no impact upon and neither condemn nor condone but still consider impactful enough to be mentionned. Also, the core team can not and will not vouch for the security/integrity of such external projects and as such shall not be considered liable should such a project contains malware or be used for nefarious purposes.

Note to self: think about adding this as small letters on our future missives.

Hey guys it seems like there may be many different versions of the Monero website such as the dev team's website, the MEW website and others. I'm looking to see if I can raise $70-$100 in either BTC or XMR to buy a domain and cover some of the web host cost. If I receive the funding I will start working on a brand new Monero website that will be visually appealing, it will inform the general public of what Monero is, how to get started, guides on setting up a wallet, mining, current XMR exchanges, emission information, what's currently in development and just a bunch of other information for your average joe and even computer nerd to get started with Monero.

My XMR address is: 4AGDFtUJggTcdMqCefhWzQ9FcmfnPohHiZBQMzsVk5XbE9bPogW8UB9bbzWEQrYXcDQRYh7oyuHF2CM 78oaD4FXbVCfnmwF
My BTC address is: 14qx4wQbKn8gm75E3EJeaoP5kuHNomjWgf

I know there is very few people that are willing to donate to support various efforts that could potentially take BTC and Monero to the next level, but I figure it's worth a shot to see what kind of response I can get from the XMR community. Lets finally try to get a nice website setup for our cryptocurrency Cheesy

P.S. Also if you donate please leave a post or shoot me a PM so I know who to thank later.
Now this is something.
I approached you when you proposed to help with the MEW website. Domain name is taken care of, webserver is taken care of. Now you are talking about creating yet-another-website. This makes me question your willingness to work on the MEW website, which is supposed to be exactly what you describe.

Understandably, I am concerned about your actual involvement. I'd much prefer you withdraw your proposal to help for the MEW website if you prefer to focus on your very own website. I do not believe you could have more than one iron in the fire and, more importantly, I do not want to have to deal with another case of constant delaying.

But since, in the meantime, you send me a PM asking for what the MEW site would be, I hope this is just a misunderstanding and both your and our goals will meet in the shape of the MEW website.

Update: I have no issue with you asking for donation but it you work for the MEW website, MEW shall escrow this money, since the reputation of MEW would be engaged.

Monero (as a virtual cash) should be usable regardless of whether governments are okay with it. To me that's the entire point.
And this is already the case, since it is decentralised and open-source. So I really don't see why you are concerned.
