441  Economy / Economics / Re: How Bitcoin might destroy another entire industry! on: November 10, 2013, 10:17:00 PM
There is an entire industry handling trillions of various fiat currency.  Many companies and even entire countries specialize in this industry called asset protection.  Countless man hours and enormous amounts are spent creating off shore shell companies, trusts, and various other vehicles to shield money from seizure ranging from cases of simple judgements personal or business all the way to issues of protecting wealth in countries where politics play a big role in permitting or confiscating personal wealth.  A few good lessons on bitcoin security makes Switzerland and Cayman Islands obsolete.

This could be partly true, but I think with it's volatility and newness, it's a long way from that. Additionally I'm not really worried about the people in that industry, they'll find something to do.
442  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is the Bitcoin Block Chain too big? on: November 10, 2013, 10:12:07 PM
Check out my video, I discus this and more Smiley

Jason, first thanks for the all the videos you've made they were really helpful for me when I was studying btc at the beginning. To answer the question, I think it's fine as it is but I also think that future wallets will have default settings which won't download the full chain.
443  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi Nakamoto should offer a million bitcoin reward on: November 10, 2013, 10:09:26 PM
sounds like a good idea, I'll bet a micro nation would be the first.
444  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: U.S regulation on Bitcoin fundamentally cannot work on: November 10, 2013, 10:08:44 PM
I agree it make will make it harder for them, which of course is great, however I think they could still exist and tax even in an exclusively bitcoin environment. I'm not expert and haven't spent anytime thinking about but even I can think of some ways.
445  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: To reassure people about the security of the BTC on: November 10, 2013, 02:37:23 PM
well to be honest even at this point I don't think bitcoin is for everyone without prior study, it's too easy to screw up. btc itself is secure, but how it's used of course can be a problem.
446  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how to install the alt-coin qt clients with linux on: November 10, 2013, 02:28:51 PM
got it thanks
447  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how to install the alt-coin qt clients with linux on: November 10, 2013, 02:14:20 PM
also one more thing to your point about now being able to connect to a peer, at first I also wasn't able to connect, but then I turned off my VPN, now it works. Maybe the VPN service won't allow that protocol?
448  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how to install the alt-coin qt clients with linux on: November 10, 2013, 02:10:18 PM
again thanks so much the help. here is what I've done now with more confusion.

I went to the github site, read the readme which told to go to http://primecoin.org/
from there I saw the link to download the client:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/primecoin/files/latest/download?source=files

I downloaded the client, unpacked it and read the readme:

Quote
Setup
---------------------
You need the Qt4 run-time libraries to run Bitcoin-Qt. On Debian or Ubuntu:
   `sudo apt-get install libqtgui4`

Unpack the files into a directory and run:

- bin/32/bitcoin-qt (GUI, 32-bit)
- bin/32/bitcoind (headless, 32-bit)
- bin/64/bitcoin-qt (GUI, 64-bit)
- bin/64/bitcoind (headless, 64-bit)
...

I did went to the dir and ran ./bitocin-qt
now I have a primecoin wallet!

However two things I don't understand...

1. Why can I simply download and run the client, when before we were trying to compile the whole thing, what is the advantage to compiling if there is one?
2. Why the heck is it a primecoin wallet, when from the star I wanted PPcoin wallet!?  Smiley Are they somehow the same thing?
449  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how to install the alt-coin qt clients with linux on: November 10, 2013, 01:45:26 PM
just to make sure I understand, you mean from the source here:

git clone https://github.com/primecoin/primecoin.git
450  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which operating system(s) do you use? (Poll) on: November 10, 2013, 01:43:07 PM
This is very interesting data so far, and I almost want to believe it's not right, but currently the most popular OS for bitcointalk.org is Linux. This tells me that the bitcoin community very much still geeky. Consider that in the general population Linux is only on about 1.6% of desktops according to Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems
In 2011 it was 56.9% for Linux ( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2891 )
Now in 2013 it seems to be 37.6% so far.

Definitely still more geeky than an average community, but you can see a trend.
I use Ubuntu as my main os. Smiley

wow very interesting! thanks for adding that.
451  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which operating system(s) do you use? (Poll) on: November 10, 2013, 01:05:46 PM
Yes, window 7 is the best...

well it does have the most votes as far as users. But why is it the best? In what ways is it the best?
452  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Opinion on the US on: November 10, 2013, 12:29:30 PM
a lot of good people living under a dangerous government. The world would be a lot better place if the US government didn't exist.
Thanks to this government you still can say it loud.
Try to do this somewhere in North Korea.

not true, in fact it's just the opposite.
453  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how to install the alt-coin qt clients with linux on: November 10, 2013, 11:56:40 AM
another update:

I did some searching online and found this
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16607003/qmake-could-not-find-a-qt-installation-of

I installed suggested package:
sudo apt-get install qtcreator

and now when I run qmake in the primecoin dir I get this message:

454  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: bitcoin qt problem on: November 10, 2013, 10:45:48 AM
Could it be that the qt application is taking up all the system resources thus not allowing windows to work correctly? When you first start the client it will start downloading the full blockchain.

btw I'm guessing these videos will disappear as the creators start removing them.

thanks for posting these, it's very interesting the various perspectives the naysayers hold, some just don't understand at all, others have a more "real money" philosophy, and some are just afraid.

458  Economy / Services / Re: Earn up to 1.2BTC/month just by posting! on: November 09, 2013, 10:53:54 PM
Joining today again.
604 posts at the moment.
PLEASE CLARIFY THIS STUNNA: Can I choose what '17th of the month' to receive my bitcoins? Can I accumulate my posts over 2 months?

Thats a good question because if someone starts now they won't have much time to reach the targets, but maybe thats ok, they can go for next months.
459  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: one good thing about missing the bitcoin riches boat on: November 09, 2013, 10:51:05 PM
I've seen a few things about goldcoin, but what makes it worthy?
460  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how to install the alt-coin qt clients with linux on: November 09, 2013, 10:49:08 PM
so I went to the primecoin directory and ran the "qmake USE_UPNP=-", however again same message as above.

Then I did something that might have been a mistake, I went to the src directory and ran the "make -f makefile.unix", it did it's thing seemingly successfully.
