I'm seriously thinking about getting one of these!

replace my 2x5770 Wink

I've saved $400 cash, and have (at current prices) about $200 in btc, so once it's released I'll check out my options for buying
442  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Increases in bitcoin prices are bad for merchants on: January 03, 2012, 08:53:43 PM
while I bought a couple things when it hit 25, I bought several coins when price was at 16, so I'm hoping it hits 17 so I can feel better about myself Wink
443  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: tainted bitcoins on: January 02, 2012, 06:50:46 PM
I'll take some tainted coins!!!

Deposit tainted coins here: 1Ghg4qAnpSEwVYWfqLDVbi5p4nsasGfg27

Crap I was gonna say that I'd gladly take tainted coins as well.  Grin  You beat me to it!
444  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How do you make ฿ letter? on: December 30, 2011, 07:42:09 PM
Silly question since I posted the ฿, but I copied it from somewhere else.

So how can one type out ฿ using either Mac or Windows?
445  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The Casascius 10 BTC Silver Round is here! (PIC) on: December 30, 2011, 03:34:44 PM
Casascius:

If/when (hopefully) bit coins increase in value to the point where it makes sense to cover the manufacturing costs, would you consider making .1 BTC coins (or .5 or whatever smaller denomination)?  It would be cool to have things like this in circulation and not just a sweet display piece. Smiley

Hopefully at some point bit coins will be worth $100 or more each, but then buying a 1BTC coin to give to someone would hurt the wallet a little more. Smiley
446  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The Casascius 10 BTC Silver Round is here! (PIC) on: December 30, 2011, 02:27:50 PM
Tonto I think your complicting the idea here. I gave a couple of these out and showed the user the balance can be viewed anytime on blockexplorer with the visible first bits, but can't be spent off the coin without peeling the tamper evident hologram to reveal the private key. So as long as the hologram is intact you can be sure the balance is still on any coin given or received.  Personally I don't think the silver rounds are the best coins to be opening.

Casascious I'm looking to get a few more of these and see the price has been adjusted but you now have 2 box prices in this thread (2 and 1.5). How much should I take off when ordering with no box?

Ok I figured it out using one of my keys on block explorer (just using the first few bits of one I had).  Thanks!   Grin

(apologies if this info is on your website, but I'm at work and haven't found it yet)

How does one go about using the codes to make a wallet?  Like let's say I am given a coin, and and (pretend I'm a user who's never used bit coins before) install the bit coin client, and I now have a newly made (albeit 0 balance) wallet on my computer.  So I then decide to put the 10BTC from the coin into my newly created wallet... how would I do this?

(or is there a link to an existing thread or on your site to keep duplication down?)

I'm asking because I have a couple friends who might get into bit coins, but don't yet see the inherent value... if I presented them with a coin with real "value", it might pique their interest.  Smiley
448  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The Casascius 10 BTC Silver Round is here! (PIC) on: December 29, 2011, 10:33:47 PM
How do these things "work"?  I mean, so let's say I was to use this as money.  So I find someone who's willing to exchange something in return for this 10BTC coin.  So the embedded key is tied to what wallet?  I mean someone somewhere created the wallet that has the key.  If the person who takes my coin decides to transfer those 10BTC to their wallet, how do they do it?

I mean I know it's cool to know that that 10BTC coin is backed by actual 10BTC, and maybe that user would perpetuate that coin.  It's cool that the key can be verified so you know you're getting 10BTC worth or not.

This has probably been asked/answered elsewhere, so I'm sorry if so. Smiley

Hey I posed this question in another forum, but gonna ask here if it's ok, too:

When you buy gold (as an investment), is it just a paper trail, or do you get an actual gold bar?
450  Economy / Economics / Re: Investing in BTC to Preserve Wealth - Silly or Practical ? on: December 29, 2011, 05:03:53 PM
by the way, when someone invests in gold/silver, is it just a paper trail, or do you get a physical gold bar?

I'm just wondering 'cause if shit hit the fan and the economy collapses, anarchy, etc, etc, I'd be leery of just holding a piece of paper.

"It says here that I own a gold bar!  I'm here to collect."

(person holding the gold bar)  *cocks gun*  "That piece of paper don't mean shit son; possession is 9/10ths of the law, now get off my property.  Leave your woman, tho."
451  Economy / Economics / Re: Investing in BTC to Preserve Wealth - Silly or Practical ? on: December 29, 2011, 04:59:24 PM
gold has had its 15 years of up trend... Going Extremely high a few months ago. but whats stopping gold from dropping. isn't this a highly speculative market as well?

the safest place to store your wealth is in your own life, enjoy your money!

buy a house! buy some beer, buy a super hot computer, wtv you want.
buy some bitcoins and spend them! support something you believe in.

money / things are not wealth

invest in your life!

Agreed.  Money is only as good as what you buy with it.  Money, by itself, is no better than kindling.  My father-in-law spent his life living conservatively (his dad went through the Great depression).  Late in life he started spending on things.. not a lot, just more than what he usually did... so bought a year-old pickup instead of an 8 year-old pickup (he still wouldn't buy off-the-lot), he bought a nice golf-cart instead of renting, etc.    I noticed that once he started doing this, and enjoying life, he got a lot happier.

I'm not saying go spend every time you have the moment you have it, but enjoy yourself... you're allowed!
452  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Uses of waste mining heat? on: December 29, 2011, 04:15:05 PM
I've been debating setting up some tubing with a heat exchanger (sealed) to provide heating to my aquarium, since I need to heat it anyways.  I just haven't got around to it.  Plus I don't know how hot it will get (55 gallons), so I'll need to do some testing first so I don't come home one day to fish soup!

If it works, then I'd keep the regular heater on to provide backup in the event that my GPUs stop mining.

If you have a water cooling system you could use a thermostatic valve to divert the hot water to either aquarium or a radiator.

One way to get an idea of how much heat your aquarium needs is to plug it into a kill-a-watt.  My guess is that an aquarium doesn't lose that much heat.  Likely the output of your rig is vastly oversized compared to the needs of the aquarium.  Now 500 gallon, or a backyard swimming pool that might be more like it.

My rig is only 2 5770.
It's my gaming rig, so by the time the fluid got from my rig to the aquarium (one room over) there would be heat loss out of the tubing.

It was just a silly idea I had, but if the aquarium was in my same room, I'd look into it more seriously, but might give an idea to someone else reading. Smiley

my gaming computer (also my mining computer when not gaming) is in my man-cave (read: masturbatorium), and I must say it gets mighty toasty in there

455  Economy / Economics / Re: How will SOPA in the US impact bitcoin globally if it passes? on: December 20, 2011, 05:48:09 PM
How was allofmp3.com a scam (to consumers)?  Back when I was feeling guilty about not paying for stuff, I bought from them, and every time I bought an mp3, I received it, it was legit, it worked.

What was the scam?

The artists never received that money.  You'd have been better off pirating without paying allofmp3.  You were simply paying Russian criminals to send you the pirated goods.

So then they're not much different than the RIAA companies? Cheesy

457  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Can't shake the 100% cpu bug. [Sorta Resolved] on: December 14, 2011, 02:40:40 PM
I skipped 11.11, but installed 11.12 last night, and it also fixes the CPU bug (at least it did for me).  On the flip side, my Mhash/sec went down a little, but I'm happy to have my CPU back Smiley
458  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: AMD Catalyst 11.11 Driver on: December 14, 2011, 03:46:06 AM
11.12 fixed my CPU bug. Smiley  The flip side is I'm down like 20 Mhash/sec, unless those numbers were being incorrectly reported to begin with, but I'm happy that my CPU isn't in overdrive

edit, my Crossfire got enabled automatically when it installed 11.12 Sad   I discovered this because Skyrim started playing really funky, and I remembered people talking about funky behavior with Crossfire.  So I disabled Crossfire, and my Mhash/sec came up a little bit (although it seemed about par w/out Crossfire, so maybe that's fixed now?  someone might do some more experimenting)

and the CPU bug is still fixed for me. Smiley
459  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: WEBSITE OWNERS: NEW BROWSER MINER! HAVE YOUR WEBSITE GENERATE BITCOINS FOR YOU! on: November 17, 2011, 06:36:42 PM
Actually, Flash game-makers might totally be able to take advantage of that and have it even sneak by experienced miners.  (This only holds true if a miner is mining from his/her main computer as well, like used for browsing, etc).  Since Flash video hogs my GPU, a Flash game could be coded to mine and the casual miner would think it was just Flash overhead, etc.  I even noticed that Firefox now has this annoying plugin-container.exe (to help with Flash, etc, crashing) that ends up sucking GPU (I determined later that since Flash is within this, you can kill plugin-container.exe to get your GPU back, but if you had anything running Flash shit, it'll kill flash on those websites, but this might help you get rid of unwanted Flash videos (like from advertisements or something))
460  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: The myth about "free electricity" in winter on: October 26, 2011, 07:33:48 PM
Here in Kansas I use natural gas for heating, and my water heater.  I prefer this so that when power goes out during a winter storm, I can still light my fireplace and have hot water to shower with before I go to work (since my work has a generator, I still have to go to work even if we have a city-wide power outage)
