If we decide to insulate ourselves from news because it is always negative, we are insulating ourselves from reality.

but we're talking about 'mainstream news' and you are assuming that represents reality.

446  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Did the Pirate Ponzi fiasco stunt the growth of Litecoin? on: January 23, 2013, 12:06:28 AM
While refunding the people who invested in Pirate through Coblee was the right thing for Coblee to do, perhaps combined with his own personal loss in Pirate, he so greatly depleted his coin reserves that his continued involvement in Litecoin was no longer such a worthwhile endeavor.

i believe Coblee's lenders acted immorally by accepting money from Coblee's pocket, when they were told and aware ahead of time what the terms were.

he's a nice guy, but is it really honourable to dishonour a prior agreement?
447  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Did the Pirate Ponzi fiasco stunt the growth of Litecoin? on: January 23, 2013, 12:01:00 AM
*than

I'll give this a good read later, good night.

lol who are you correcting? THEN is the proper word to use. THAN would be used in a comparison.

Nope.  In all three cases where "then" has been used in the OP, "than" was the correct word to use.  It's one of those errors which drives me nuts, too, because those words don't even sound the same so it's hard to understand how you can confuse them when writing (at least brain-farts over two, too, and to are understandable).  However, it doesn't detract from the substance of the post so I'm not sure why it was worth mentioning.

It just drives me nuts, that's all. On Facebook, annoying Facebook girls usually make that mistake when they post a half baked rant about something. I guess, the "then" mistake reminds me of them.

you mean people who use use 'then' rather than 'than', then use 'than' rather than 'then'?
448  Other / Off-topic / Re: Avoiding main stream news. on: January 22, 2013, 11:03:51 PM
in australia, when i was a kid (70's, 80's), the typical tv news program (not counting ads) consisted of about:

22 mins news
5 mins sport
3 mins weather

now it consists of

5 mins news and/or celebrity gossip
22 mins sport
3 mins weather

451  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Arbitrage on 3 exchanges? on: January 21, 2013, 03:19:34 AM
Does anyone here arb these three exchanges?

yes

a good reason not to though, is that it takes a lot of time/money/paaaaaaaatience just to make $3.

it might be more worthwhile if they all had the volume of mt gox.
452  Other / Off-topic / Re: Matthew N. Wright friend or foe on: January 21, 2013, 01:39:11 AM
scammer tag doesn't seem to mean much.

even after the tag was applied matt is still trustworthy... made good on a few BTC/KRW trades.

+1
453  Economy / Speculation / Re: Should i allocate 100% of my savings to bitcoin ? on: January 21, 2013, 01:23:35 AM

455  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Questions about wallet.dat on: January 19, 2013, 11:57:58 PM
So it's wisest to backup a wallet, say, once a week or so to insure that the private keys are up to date?

yes, if you do 100 transactions per week.

if you do 100 transactions per year, then back up once per year.

different for everybody.
456  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin over $15, what does it mean for you? on: January 19, 2013, 11:49:00 PM
personally it makes me anxious because i'd like to be very heavily invested in bitcoins, but don't have any spare fiat to pump into it yet.

if i had a spare $500k, that's about how much i'd be willing to dump in at this point.

That's a pretty ballsy move...

half a million dollars may sound like a lot, but it sounds a lot less when you say 32k btc.

i'm sure there's still a few people around who are sitting on at least that much.

458  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Shouldn't we start using safer keys from now instead of waiting for problems? on: January 17, 2013, 11:35:18 PM
. . . Already had my wallet emptied from a brute-force.

How do you know that?

 Undecided

Because I know who did it. Same stalker as the one I had years ago. Finally found me again.

either that, or because your password was 12345 (same as my luggage).
459  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Shouldn't we start using safer keys from now instead of waiting for problems? on: January 17, 2013, 11:57:34 AM

It's really unlikely that bitcoin will replace all world currencies in 20-30 years.

Especially if you consider that any single copy of the blockchain would grow by 6 TeraByte PER DAY.

i thought the maximum block size was 1mb.

144 blocks per day = maximum 144mb per day.
460  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is the Qt client killing the hard drive slowly? on: January 17, 2013, 05:51:58 AM
^ if downloading the blockchain kills your harddrive, your harddrive was probably at the end of it's life anyway.
