Did you try "export DISPLAY=:0"?

Here is how to use a passphrase to generate priv keys and corresponding Bitcoin addresses

  • Chose a passphrase of at least 7 words and 40 characters, e.g. "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks"
  • Run ./pp2k.py --pwpath /home/jackjack/dev/bitcoin/pywallet/ --passphrase "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks"
  • The console returns:
    • A random code, a 11-digit number, that you must remember or save it somewhere, for example in your mobile phone where nobody can think it's bitcoin related
    • Your first 10 privkeys
    • The corresponding 10 bitcoin addresses if you downloaded pywallet and provided the correct path to pp2k

The code makes stealing your coins nearly impossible even if one knows your passphrase (more than 2 months to test all the possibilities)

If you want more than 10 keys, use the --size flag (maybe with the --code flag if you want to chose it)
If you want to retrieve a key, use the --code and the --keynumber flags

whoa, downloaded your binary.  very cool.  you're right; now i'm worried its gonna run some kinda wallet stealer Wink

what do i do at this point?  just send some coin to one of my generated pub keys and save the private key?

Try it with a trivial amount to see if you can get the coins back into your wallet using the patched bitcoind.  Lobby MtGox, TradeHill, etc. and the developers to allow redemptions of private keys right in their websites/program, so it doesn't have to be so difficult for the average user.
Sending private keys via browsers? They are the most critical part of bitcoin it's just crazy
MITM attack, browser history, sniffers if not https, etc........

Just use pywallet, it's infinitely safer and its web interface makes it really simple to import a key
5364  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: how do i make a new wallet? on: August 04, 2011, 10:47:13 AM
If bitcoin is not running, renaming your wallet is absolutely not dangerous and does not create new files to delete
5365  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator [v0.16] on: August 04, 2011, 03:00:26 AM
The --info flag does that, and doesn't import the key, even if the command is importkey:
Code:
./pywallet.py --info --importprivkey yourkey

Or you can use the web interface if you prefer

I didn't even know it was possible
I, of course, agree
5369  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How to Backup Wallet on: August 04, 2011, 01:26:21 AM
Absolutely
On the other side, stealing your wallet.dat suffices to steal all your coins inside it
5370  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator [v0.16] on: August 04, 2011, 01:22:44 AM
Sorry if this was already answered. Is there a way to easily verify that a private/public key pair is valid without having to import it?

Specifically, I want to use vanitygen to generating a few savings account address offline and possibly just write those keys down or print them out. I would prefer to not have to connect my computer to the internet to be safe. But I'm worried about a possible bug in the vanitygen code that may cause it to generate invalid keys. So I don't want to generate an address, put in 1000 bitcoins, then 5 years later find out that the corresponding private key doesn't work!
As vanitygen and pywallet "privkey to pubkey" functions weren't programmed by the same person you can use pywallet (getinfo function) to reassure you

5372  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Namecoin] Namecoin client not working on: August 03, 2011, 11:51:04 PM
OK, sorry.
I got it now.

I have two questions:

1. Does it make sense to mine with CPU on namecoins? I've only got 8 MHash/s...
2. If yes for question 1, could you name me some namecoin mining pools?

Thanks :-D

EDIT: Yay. Post 50 :-D
Mining namecoins is even less profitable than mining bitcoins currently Undecided
But if you want to try anyway there are about 3 pools, but I only know bitparking.com

See this for why it's not a good idea: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=33683.0
If you use that, use a HUGE passphrase
5374  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Matthew N. Wright Scammer or Not? on: August 03, 2011, 10:58:54 PM
All these immediate accusations of SCAMMER! just hurt bitcoin as a whole.

He's not getting or asking for any money from anyone.  How can he be a scammer?

This
I just don't get it Huh

He actually was asking for money to fund his investigation.
I hope y'all realize that he did have a tag of "scammer" here given to him by the admin/moderators when he refused to pay 1 BTC for artwork he commissioned from another forum member when he went by the name of Bitmole. There is a repeating pattern with this guy of excuses, apologies and claims of ignorance for the actions he takes. Doesn't matter whether it  was in bitmole days or his Matthew N. Wright days.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28004.0  Some examples of his more classy conversations.
Still can't decide if he is a scammer, but it's worth reading, thanks

You know there is not any GUI for Namecoin?
Run your first namecoind, leave it alone
Then in a cmd, run 'namecoind help'

Nice idea, but banks don't lose their wallets. Never

Where you saw that?
5380  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Coins not showing in wallet? on: August 03, 2011, 10:30:58 PM
I'm pretty sure there's a wiki page about that....

Well,
  • When did they sent the money?
  • Your client downloaded all the blocks?
  • Are the transactions in blockexplorer?
  • What's the address they sent coins to?
