I was so off with my contest prediction... big mistake

Well who knew that Bitcoin was gonna drag down the entire market overnight? We all knew segwit was locked but I think someone called in a pretty big short on the whole market.

Now that is over it should bounce right back.
582  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BitBay OFFICIAL BITBAY Thread Smart Contracts Decentralized Markets Rolling Peg on: July 21, 2017, 04:16:49 AM
this coins really need an HD-wallet. did the devs already contacted jaxx? i would really  be great if you would not need to download the hole blockchain.

I'm aware, that is in my notes. It is not exactly on the roadmap but I've done similar things like in BitHalo which doesn't download the chain.

My only issue with this is there is really only one online block explorer I like which is chainz. We would have to host a couple nodes that have the listunspent functionality as chainz only allows it with an API key and I don't want to abuse it because we request a lot.

It's funny how in your OP you don't list BitBay or BlackHalo/BitHalo which was the world's first decentralized markets and it doesn't bloat the chain and scales well.

Considering you guys of course know about us considering you got the idea of double deposit escrow from BlackHalo years ago when Shadowcash started (considering they even asked me to work on it which I declined)

It's all fun and games but if you are gonna list Open Bazaar and other random markets isn't a bit funny that you don't list the most obvious project that predates you?

Heck if you add BitHalo to the mix, we are also coin agnostic.

I'm pretty sure the majority of those icos fake their volume like Qtum(who bought all of it and gave themselves free coins and refunds)

When you hear someone raise 10 million dollars in -10 seconds it's not true.

Everything is a rich man's trick. Gotta keep them honest.
585  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BitBay OFFICIAL BITBAY Thread Smart Contracts Decentralized Markets Rolling Peg on: July 20, 2017, 05:45:20 AM
I would agree that POS is much better than POW. However there is complex problems to solve with scaling I'm both systems. Perhaps a really clever pruning system although they always make the excuse you should be able to calculate back to the Coinbase not sure if I agree.

Proof of work like Bitcoin is the biggest waste of electricity in the history of mankind. I think it's only popular because it makes attacks expensive. However from Bitcoins recent politics it's obvious miners have way too much power and it must be distributed better.

Maybe people who stake can split the reward to scale.

I've heard of ideas to force stakers to put up collateral to keep them honest. One of the risks is calculating stakes in advance although a tricky attack maybe realistic. So maybe POS needs more randomness to it which shouldn't be that hard.

There is a lot of research left to do in terms of computer science. However at this point I think that pretty much any challenge can be solved wiith clever design. First place to look is pruning.

That's what I love about you David. Always trying to think ahead.
For you to still worry about scaling even after you've put so much though into BitBay's design to prevent bloat, is a great indication of how strong this coin really is. Even though you say there is a lot of work to do, I at least know you have been adamant from the beginning with keeping the coin as streamline as possible.
Thanks for letting us know you still think scalability is still a huge factor with all of crypto in general. I'll add it to the list of projects that need to be addressed after the peg is complete and for when we refactor the coding.

It makes me realize how many other coins are digging their own grave in regards to scalability. Sadly they can't or won't address it in fear of scaring investor confidence, which just allows the problem to spiral out of control even faster.

______

Just throwing thoughts out on the matter...
In regards to lightning networks - I know you (David) have your concerns over the matter because the system currently needs a strong central hub account holder to keep the transactions safe of others.

So killing 2 birds with one stone...
cryptohunter mentioned supernodes. what if we utilize a supernode system for the sake and safety of properly managing lightning networks?
It would solve a big portion of scalability along with appeasing the community investors with reason to support the coin by holding super nodes?
Have a portion of stake rewards provide incentive to supernodes/lightning network service nodes?

Well maybe I'm compulsive or just an idealist. Because personally I think so many things need to be reinvented. It's ironic that many times the best technology is not always used. There is a lot of inventors long forgotten who hopefully the internet revives.

I'm not entirely sure if the solution yet but I think there are ways.

As for lightning and masternodes it sort of ends up that way. Because the only people who can route payments are the ultra wealthy. Unless I'm misunderstanding some of the techniques used. You need someone accounting with you that can route large payments. That's why maybe frozen coins can help in this regard. Although since frozen coins don't hold the same value as liquid coins that's not foolproof either.

Will probably end up being pruning and distribution of workload. Maybe in some cases stronger nodes.

Is it possible to review BitBay Client source code? I can't find it on github. And https://github.com/dzimbeck/BitBay repository looks inactive.
Absolutely. It's at www.davtonia.com/BitHalo/HaloOBF.zip

I don't keep it at github because I change variable names and it's mostly in a couple files. However you can build from source and of course I can answer any questions you have on the source. If it was on github it would be one of the most active olin the industry I think. I just don't want cloners so I host it elsewhere.

Hey everyone we have talked on Slack about getting on another exchange Cryptopia. We are asking around to the community to chip in. Even a small amount helps. They charge roughly 1.3 btc last time we checked and are pretty decent volume. If you want to contribute please send to this address:

1EC1RnF9rQtPM4pSCUcXvMmVNeJUAvYiFC

As an additional gesture of thanks and as per the bounty list which we want to give incentive to acquire exchanges, we will split 50,000 coins among the people who chip in proportional to what they add. So if you chip in send us the TXID and your BitBay address

Great to see BitBay still doing well and development remaining strong. A true decentralised market place will be a game changer but inevitably this will attract illegal goods. It's just the way it is. You cannot police the market or it will kill it. It will also impose a responsibility on BitBay itself.

Perhaps, legally, the best option would be to give private market-makers a private key with which to moderate, therefore shifting the liability onto them as far as policing the marketplace. just thinking out loud, this is all a new frontier.

That's a pretty good idea. I should mention that we are not obligated to moderate. I can give the key to anyone who wants the job of babysitting the internet. But that would also make it so they could moderate any market.

If we allow moderation of named markets we would need to publish those on the blockchain since the markets are serverless and don't use the chain. It's an interesting idea and for now will simply meditate on it. Regardless I want users to find other ways to use this software such as barter, cash for coins, sales and so many verticals we hat yet to explore.

So alphabay is down.  It seems like the Owners ran off with the funds?  This shows the need for a decentralized marketplace without any arbitration. It seems that David is against Bitbay being used for this purpose, but the entry of drugs into the marketplace will eventually happen for it to be truly decentralized free market.  Are there people that have tried to use the Bitbay marketplace for this purpose already?
I

He could hardly condone it really. I mean we have to be sensible.

But if it is decentralised and has no central control then it will be used for whatever people want to use it for.

TBH though the uptake and usage of both this and sys is highly disappointing. It's been years and still nobody really uses these market places at the moment.

I think we need to look at this and see if we can get the api out so we can use the power of bitbay for easy to use websites and mobile apps to run on top of it. Perhaps mainstream are never going to sit on their pc's and download the entire bc and full marketplace and use it like that. Sometimes you just have to give them what they want not what is actually best for them.

If other devs were coding out sports betting other prediction market websites and anything else that bitbay can be used for then that could build some real traction. That and the peg will attract people too. David could keep coding the core out whilst other devs just build their websites/apps/ platforms on top

I see now eth was smart they produced something that in the end enabled almost infinite other devs to do their thing that still benefitted eth. Every ico running on eth is building value into their system even if temp. Their main issue is the resources needed are growing at a very alarming rate.

We need to find a way to open bitbay to other devs who can work and build value into the bitbay system. I guess the api will do that to quite a large extent.

Ideally we need to get on btc38 this coin would be a good fit there. We need someone that speaks fluent chinese that has a senior role with bitbay. They have so many coins of this coins age listed there and most of those are total crap.

Polo for whatever reason seem to not want to list us. I have suggested it to them many times before and lots of people on polo troll box have asked in the past

Cryptopia is up and coming I think this exchange is growing.

I had a few hyper tokens and coin2 tokens.... to my shock they both got themselves listed on yobit and cryptopia within a week or 2. We could consult with their teams on how they did this?  they are not btc38 or polo but still we can't be on one only.

Maybe we are being censored Polo controlled opposition, who knows. Luckily they will eventually be replaced with decentralized or multisig options.

I can give an API but a site wanting to do this would need to know code pretty well.

I agree ETH allowing a better script system let's people build on it. However it's the wrong approach, 1 GB a day added to their chain. Also they are too greedy by faking volume on icos and getting refunds. Something that would be illegal in the stock market. At the very least it's deceptive. Unless someone can convince me projects fund millions of dollars in minutes.

People do use our markets it just starts slow. An eBay plugin would really help aot reselling items isn't easy though as you might take a loss doing so or have to charge a premium.

Regardless even DDE used as insurance to prevent theft is a massive vertical. Our project is so flexible it's crazy the only drawback is it Isn't modular.

However the API will allow Python code so users can easily patch functions in real time for any web application.  There is a bigger drawback with API which is the lack of coders who know blockchain.

Nobody uses Bitcoin either other than to speculate. The market is maturing slowly but I believe we will get there.

Of course they ran off with the funds. I'm completely shocked that double deposit isn't the industry standard. Honestly it deeply saddens me that the news never even mentions BitHalo and says "smart contracts can't be done on Bitcoin".

No I don't think anyone uses Bitbay for this and I politely ask users not to. Although decentralized markets this project must become mainstream so commercial users take an interest in the escrow free transactions. Otherwise it will gain the stigma of a fringe dark market.

With that said anyone who uses Darknet and trusts 3rd party escrow gets what they deserve. I've been preaching two party escrow for years, a bit tired of it. Why has nobody else developed this or even a crude version. Over half of all Bitcoins have been stolen by exchanges or escrow. But people still store their money online. I wonder how much pain they will sustain before they realize double deposit should be the DEFAULT.

Sheep Marketplace had a similar fate 100 million dollar theft. But the consumers line up to be screwed again. Mt Gox did it and eventually Poloniex will do it.

When will the world learn?

Bitbay has also climbed up quite a bit and i guess people are cashing out.
There is also no buy support currently and I see it going down even more unfortunately.  Hopefully it doesn't scare away the newcomers because a lot of them are probably sitting at a loss right now with the current price.  People don't like seeing a coin's value drop by more than half

Anyone who sells alts here is a fool.

It's clear there is heavy manipulating going on. There are tons of big alts down 30% in a day. It's pretty treacherous. It's not gonna matter in the long run.

We have a new build coming out so yeah

Definitely a fool. Selling Thursday night at 40% higher than what your current Bitbay is worth and then buying it back when it hits bottom is dumb lol

Well it is said that long term bulls usually defeat traders in how much they gain. I can attest that a long time ago I sold 2.5 million NEM and 4000 DRK for peanuts which today would have been worth over a million dollars combined. Granted today the markets got slaughtered. But I was more questioning the people selling on the sell side which is thin at this low price. A lot of coins are just following Bitcoin. It was literally coordinated. Most altcoins lost at least 20% today (including ETH). Despite those coins being decoupled from Bitcoin.

Orders successfully placed for both Digibyte and BitBay on the decentralized exchange!

You have to announce this news on DGB thread:

This is on testnet?! So no test on mainnet yet? If so I would love a txid

Help, my balance has not showed up in my wallet.
I downloaded bootstrap, got the wallet synced sent my coins, but they have still not showed up 50 blocks later.
Its pretty stressful

Yeah looks like we have a bad node. Basically one of the nodes in the seed for new connections is in its own little bubble.

So it's no big deal however, I need everyone to check and make sure their block number matches chainz.

If it doesn't please sync again and add all the nodes in chainz under the network tab using the addnode command. If anyone needs more assistance with this please contact us here or on slack.

This is an old coin. It seems that the development is still good, but the price is a little high. We are hesitating whether to buy some or not

It is actually very undervalued. BAY has had solid development for a few years and is just starting with the marketing. Most of the times it is the other way around with coins selling nothing but hype and hope, especially these ICOs. Once the word really spreads, the sky isn't the limit, the moon isn't the limit, not even 1 billion light years away is the limit. BAY has true top 5 potential, especially once the rolling peg is implemented. There are so many use cases for BAY it is crazy. Also, BAY is currently cheaper than other similar projects which are thought to be inferior to BAY by a lot of people...

Actually it's funny Bitbay is considered superior to a lot of other coins even by people who say they aren't invested. People eventually end up here after they get tired of holding "Truckcoin" or "Furrycoin" or dare I say "Dogecoin". Imagine that, does the illusion sell better than the reality?
597  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BitBay OFFICIAL BITBAY Thread Smart Contracts Decentralized Markets Rolling Peg on: July 01, 2017, 04:55:11 AM
Is listing on Polo really can be bought? If so, maybe we could also donate to this?

If anyone can find out what different exchanges are charging absolutely, why not. We could use a few new exchanges as that may drive more volume.
598  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BitBay OFFICIAL BITBAY Thread Smart Contracts Decentralized Markets Rolling Peg on: June 29, 2017, 05:41:39 PM
When I downloaded bitcoin blockchain, I had to restart from scratch twice. On the third time it still disconnected after about 4 years of sync, but when I restarted the QT it resumed from existing location.

Wow you actually attempted to download the entire Bitcoin blockchain, you must have patience by the bucket load! I've been in crypto sicne 2013 and dont think ive ever done it! I usually just generate pub and priv keys from bitaddress and effectively put my coins in cold storage then import the priv keys into an online wallet or something like electrum when i need them.

It wasn't so bad on a brand new i7 processor.
If it weren't for the damn restarts I would have completed it in about 30 hours.
The hard part was backing it up to my cloud Cheesy  That took almost 4 days!
It worked though. I've downloaded my backup to test it out. Was just a few hours behind the chain!

But there in lies one of the biggest issues with Bitcoin, why support the network that only gives incentives to the miners.

That's why I like Proof of Stake coins so much.

Thankfully, future decentralized exchanges like blocknet will help with the burden of supporting big chain POW coins.

Fair play I've actually just ordered a new laptop which should arrive next week hopefully that works out to be qucker!

I just had a look at blocknet, I dont really understand how it would help with downloading blockchains. I see its a decentralised exchange though. Maybe you could explain a little? Not trolling genuinely interested to know.

Thanks!

I agree having to download the blockchain of each coin you trade is a barrier to entry. Hopefully they add an online block explorer option to get around this.

Honestly I almost chucked my computer out of the window just now. I've been syncing the Bitbay client for the last 4 days now and it got to 92% My laptop ran out of battery while i wasnt looking and now im just getting an error message and the client close closes itself down. I've even tryed to re-index the entire blockchain again from the begining but i still get the same message.

Anyone got any ideas because it is driving me insane, so close and this happens.

All i wanted to do was stake my coins.

Im running the client on a Mac if that helps anyone

Here's the error message im getting: http://imgur.com/a/EPpZj

Ive read somewhere there is a bug with the mac client but it was working perfectly untill the battery cut at 92%

Anyone know what i can do?

Thanks

Hey so I have noticed that Mac once it goes down it tends to stay down. This means explore package contents find BitBaydata directory delete its contents but keep wallet.dat as that tracks watchonly accounts and resync. There are a few others who expressed slow sync on Mac so we are looking to merge some SPV options for Mac. Also I'm making a Mac Build that is synced in advance. Hopefully it works to greatly help that issue. Sorry I can only imagine how frustrating it is. For me as a coder it is more so hahahaha.

Don't blame me though, blame Bitcoin for constantly having issues when block data gets corrupted. They reindex and resync too. They have RPC disconnect bugs in bitcoin that still effect us and apparently moreso in Mac/WineSkin VM build

Also I added a reindex option specifically for mac! When the software doesn't connect the new build I'm releasing will allow you to wait. Then its reindex will complete and sync again.

You should never keep much money on an exchange.

I've kept all my Ether on an exchange for about 3 years because I feel it's safer there than on the Ether blockchain. I'm sure about 100 times more crypto has been lost from cold wallets due to screw ups than has been lost from exchange hacks.

Coin toss.

My BAY is still in a Mac QT Wallet. (No longer supported).

Ether is not stable.

However, almost half of Bitcoins in existence have been stolen by exchanges. Mt Gox alone was almost a billion dollar theft. Granted a lot of funds are lost by screw ups to date I personally know many people who lost their Bitbay from forgetting to backup or losing a backup.

With that said we have video tutorials on best practices. Print keys on paper, use M-Disc and so forth. When in doubt, back up and never leave funds on exchanges. Even Coinbase is known to freeze accounts Chinese exchanges deny withdraws and at any hint of regulations it will happen again.
