How come we aren't seeing listings on bitmain's website for used S5's?  I would have expected they would be switching over their own farm to S7's and have a bunch of S5's to get rid of.

Because Bitmain sold all their S5's as new to users. The one my Dad has, that's not working anymore looked like it was mining for 3 years. Dust all over it. The fan barely started properly and there were burn marks on the PCB board. Setup an RMA indicating we wanted new hardware. Shipped the used one to them, and they sent another used one. Gave up. NOW it goes bad. At that critical time where you want all the GH you can get.

Bravo again sloopy  Wink

Thank you, you are kind.

I know most people will say it is too long, too much to read, and many or most will skip on by, but if maybe a few people will read and contemplate some of these things we can have an impact. Even one miner is better than none, and I know there are many great people mining at those pools who just haven't been exposed to an opportunity where the facts have been presented as they are in this thread.

I think one of the best things is that people could make fantastic amounts of money using their hashpower if they used it wisely. Making those pools compete more for your hashpower is what will drive bitcoin into the future.

Every single miner should consider the power they have, and the possibilities are huge by simply changing the pool you mine at for a short amount of time, IE a couple of months just to see,  as it is a vote to say no, you want bitcoin to be the best it can be and it will be controlled by no one and everyone but never the small few.

I do appreciate the kind words, and please help pass the word so more people consider their choice in where they mine. That single choice has the power to make this one of the most fantastic times to ever be alive. Lets make sure we do not give up our right to mine where we want and see bitcoin evolve into the infrastructure of the most beautiful financial system this universe will ever see.

I started to mine bitcoin to gain a little profit. Pre KNC days. I think I've tried every pool that was available.  The most profitable pool I used was BTCGuild. The uptime was probably %99 or better. When the Guild disappeared I went on Ghash (ya know, that pool/company that was going to take over the Bitcoin network) but eventually dropped on Slush's for a while. Wasn't having a good time there so if I can remember I think I hopped on Bitminter. Then Eligius somewhere in there. I'm not talking about just a few days on each pool, I'm talking at least a month or more on each pool. I ended up on Antpool. Always got constant payouts and according to the small hashing power I pointed there it was correct. Then read "bad" things about Antpool and it wasn't good to mine on these Chinese pools because once again they are getting too large and going to take over the world. Well, if you already live in the US you are aware that our economy sucks and basically import everything from China. Our companies and jobs also went there too. Ok, so I pointed 10TH to CKPool and ran for about a 2 months. With all the re-starts or firmware issues, who knows, I could never get the same payouts on that pool as I did with Antpool. Even when I switched back to Antpool after my try with CKPool, my payouts were more. It is nice telling people to mine on certain pools because technical issues that probably %90 of miners have no idea of.  I can't write as elaborate as user sloppy, but what is the little guy like me who's not making any real money switch to a pool that gets less payouts then a hated pool? Everyone is mining to make a profit and they stay with the pool at which makes them the most profit. Hence, greed comes into play and all I want to do is get as much bitcoin in return to pay my electric bill, and maybe some "dust" after that.

Thanks.
I'll forward the info/price to my Dad and see if he is interested. What version is on the boards themselves?

V1.7

Sorry, I just noticed the BTC. I rushed viewing the post. I'm basing my value in USD, so that comes to over $180. Do you mean one (1) hashing board or two (2)? I only paid little over $300 for each S5 when they were selling months ago. In you do indeed mean $180 for (1) one hashing board that's way to much. I have a feeling you are including a very expensive shipping method out of the US, right?

Now I'm thinking of maybe selling off my S5's if I can get prices like that. Smiley

Good job AntPool, continuing to mine absurd numbers of empty blocks and contributing to backlogs on the network!  You just mined 2 empty blocks in under 10 minutes.  The fact that miners continue to feed you hashpower when you do this shit so often is appalling.

Eleuthria, you were usually a calm, cool and relaxed guy. I don't think I have ever seen you curse at all. You ok? Have the NY laws moved into the wrong direction as you predicted? I usually don't follow the law like that, since I don't run a pool.

its amazing you guys are waiting for blocks to confirm, yet ANTPOOL doesnt even put their own block in the next block to confirm it themselves... CRAZY..

Because margins are so thin I barely squeak by with my home rigs, I'm forced to use AntPool.  It's the only pool where I make enough payout to keep things in the black. I've tried other pools for 2 weeks at a time and lost 2-3 months of trying them at a loss. Had to go back to AntPool. If you want to pay me on a weekly basis to compensate for the loss from switching to another pool, then I'll be glad to switch over.

Make sure the the user the process is running under has permissions to delete files that the update process is targeting under that home directory. I had the issue with Minera once on Ubuntu.
in some cases just using sudo to start the process i question will get it the correct permission for file manipulations.

It was the typical permissions issue. The included permissionsfix script as it says is for "most" linux distro's, just not on my CentOS. Stupid me for not even viewing the two liner. Just in case the auto-updater runs that, I changed it to reflect my settings. Once did that, good.

Still having the issue? If so,  we have to make sure the web user (usually www-data or httpd) need to be the group. This is usually fixed by running:
sudo chown - R deligus:www-data /home/deligus/public_html/*

Thanks. Got the update working ok. I'm always forgetting my apache user is not www-data like most. I tried also changing the layout, it changes visually for a few seconds but bounces back to original. Made sure my user_data is writeable. I did clear cookies using the supplied button. Before I start making more permission changes, ideas on that? Chrome and IE, same results.

You mean switching between rows and square panels? Ive ran into this issue before but cant replicate it now. Can you try extending the size of your browser? I know its only available for larger screens.

Thankk
This is not a critical issue. I have a 24" 16:9 ratio LCD with 1900x1200. I'll expand the panel width all the way to %100. Then click on the site layout box just once. The whole site switches over to the boxes for a few seconds, but then just reverts back to the list view.

Any idea how to solve this?

All ASICs seem to be ok, but the miner does not start hashing. I read about reflashing firmware. Where can I find a tutorial to check this?

Use your own Antpool username and not Bitmain default username.

https://www.antpool.com/support.htm
Already tested that, that does not change anything Sad

Very strange. My Dad has an S5 with a bad hashing board and the other one won't hash just like your issue. I did submit a ticket to Bitmain, but I doubt they will send a response back. Once these guys get busy with shipping they tend not to add more help. Remember Janet, Yoshi? I've communicated with them privately back when I was getting my S5's, but haven't seen them on any threads.
Reflashing is easy. Just download their latest firmware from their support website then go to the UPGRADE page and select that file. There is also a re-program, which re-writes the NAND/non-volatile memory from a micro-flash card. You use a utility like Win32diskmanager and write the restore file to the flash card, insert it into the slot on the beaglebone board and boot the miner. Should re-program the miner, will have to configure your settings. Can then re-move the flash card.

One of the weirdest issues. If one hashing board dies out, you'd figure at least the other one will work. All configurations were tried. Different controller, cables, PSU. Ok, so concluded that one hashing board died. Fine. Thought could get the other "good" board hashing, but that won't even hash. Restored image from SD card. Tried different firmwares. The webGUI pages come right up fine but hashing speed just indicates 0. The other "good" board doesn't want to hash either, but indicates all zeroes. The controller was put on another rig and hashed fine. The only thing I could possibly think is this rig got ZAPPED electrically somehow.

What happens if you just disconnect the bad board?

Nothing happens. Trying to get the good half hashing but won't. I do think it got zapped.

Here is a pic of all of my miners shown (11) right now.  I had 3 overheat when the internet went out and I have shipped them back to Bitmain.  I am waiting for their return. Electric is about 25% of my total cost per month.  That comes out to be about $3700 per month with a ....

Bitmain didnt fix the internet problem yet ?? Did smith already have done a upgrade of the firmware to fix this ??

I think all smith's firmware a had the fan control built in with an updated cgminer for smoother connectivity. That's what I use on all my rigs and they all have been very stable for months.

Nothing else I could do for that rig. Just died. Oh well.

batch 6 shipped last night - supposed to  arrive friday but my batch 5 are still stuck in customs Sad

My batch 5 was stuck in customs as well because Bitmain overstated the value at over $7000 per miner. I just had to call FedEx and email them a screen shot of my order and state that the value was overstated due to human error. They'll also want to know what the miner does. This explanation got it released right away,"This particular item is a collection of computer processors called ASICs that perform a specific computational task. Alone, this component does nothing. Once I assemble other pieces and attach the ASICs it solves complex computer math problems. In the most simplest of terms, it is just a computer component."

Hope this helps.

Years ago when FedEx asked me what the shipment was, I told them they were complex calculators. Released immediately.

Anyone use duct hose to expel the heat from multiple S1-S2-S4-S5-S7 miners out a window?
Looking for pictures/ideas. I know there must be someone that has done it.

suck better than blow ?

Actually thinking about the same thing and will be heading to lowes tomorrow afternoon. I'll post an update when I get started.

This is what I'm thinking. Lining up all the Sx's in a row, side by side and just cut a hole in the side of the duct host and put the miner output right in there. With a push from a small fan it should direct all the air flow right out or where I want it. Sorry for the terrible representation. Basically just need one long hose and some cheap thermal tape to close the gaps. Don't really care what it looks like.

I think you might want to position the fan directly adjacent to the window. As your diagram current shows, if there is any kind of blockage at the window, the FAN st the end of the duct will be "pushing" against the miner's exhaust. You really want the fan to "suck" the warm air out of the duct, rather than pushing cooler air into it. Where the fan is currently shown, you could close it off, so that the air would have to flow through the miners to get exhausted.

Good suggestion. Have yet to try it, but good idea. A good enough fan to create some air pressure sucking out is good for hotter days. Colder days can just reverse and get some heat inside.

Just for this room there are only 6 rigs. So I just lined them up perpendicular to the window (hot air just blowing out) then used some pieces of cardboard on the left/right sides to direct air flow right to window. That worked well. And I'm using much quieter Noctua fans, and not those Jet Blasters as I call them. ( those loud stock S5 and S7 fans). Temps were good. I did notice when I did my candle smoke test on how much hot air spews out of the tops of these. A stiff long piece of cardboard right over all the tops extending right out to the window screen. Temps dropped 1-2 degrees just doing that. I just wish my stupid ass did this during the summer, but I was so busy doing other things never got the chance. If I need heat, all I need to do is flip the fans. To me that's easier then reversing the miner itself. These are just my test/home ones, others are offsite. Just re-arranging a little makes so much difference. And cost nothing.

It was easier to just move a good working beagle-bone to another miner. Booted right up and started hashing good, so this does confirm a bad hashing board. Sad

Never wanted to risk popping out the BBB, thanks for telling me its doable if you have a spare. If its any consolation, the dead PCB is sellable for parts. If you can't fix it, you can sell it easily on the forum.

I would not be surprised if you received PM's about it soon, if you have not already.

I asked my Dad to take apart his bad rig and put it back together. Sometimes just doing that has helped me in the past. The daughter card has 4 connectors on it, so I would imagine it can run 4 hashing boards. I have tested those connectors a year ago with just connecting on the same miner and worked as normal but since they have been running so good I don't touch them. I'm just trying to eliminate everything. There's also a 4-5 pin cable going from the daughter board to the hashing board. Not sure what that is yet.

BTW this forum software was "supposed" to be updated years ago. The forum operator which I think is sitting on a few hundred thousand worth of BTC never upgraded the forum software so you'll see back to back posts from users "like me" who respond to what they read and then have to go back to the thread to read on. There were threads out there on how much BTC the forum operator was hoarding. Users just keep donating I guess but don't pressure the operator to update to a modern browser. I mean seriously, SMF 1.1?

EDIT: A good read.  You'll read a lot of good stuff in there about updating this forum, which never took place. Why users lied outright puzzles me, but I think it was just to get more donations.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=50617.0

Here's another. Looks like the forum has over 2 million USD worth of BTC. Of course we don't know the real transparency and that post was from two years ago. Slap on another few hundred thousand for donations. Just very interesting stuff. What's real funny is the topic number.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=155000.0

Just want everyone to be aware. Throwing lots of money into BTC which in my opinion its value is tied to a dozen or so people. Unfortunately BTC got its good start in the drug market. Do some Googling and you'll have some good reading.

You realize you can check the progress they're making on the new forum right?  I'd also like to know when you think the last donation was received.  It appears you are very confused.  This forum makes BTC from advertising and very little from donations.

I was looking for a status update but could not find it. I found the posts from several years ago easily though which indicated the forum had over 5000 BTC in donations so I was only basing that donations kept going. I really did think development on an updated forum ceased since it has been a few years from the original offer and we are still using the same stuff.

EDIT: I did find it. Was in the META area.
