I just ended up using a bunch of zip ties to strap the fan to the side of the two power supplies.  They shift and wiggle a bit, but as long as I don't touch them or move them around too much they're fine.

I had not thought of heatsinks falling off over time. From what i understand, unless the unit overheat, the thermal plaster should remain fairly solid? I asked a few times if anyone thought of a downside of doing this and no one ever commented.

But yeah i saw a huge difference by running it on the side. I think i have mine on the left side, i guess i'll have to try right side.

Ack!  I just thought of something.  I look at my miners from the exhaust side so when I say the left side that's looking at it from the exhaust side of the miner.

So I got caught on sends due to this more then once. So I know to send high fees when the coin in my wallet is 35 or 50 x .01 from mining here.

A lot of of  people sending to me  don't  know this issue so  they send decent coin and think it is enough. Then everything bogs down for hours or worse sends just fail.

This actually answers some questions that I've had that I never asked.  Thanks!

After putting the miner on its left side without moving the position I can say that the temperatures dropped from 77 down to 72 after running for about 2 hours.  Now I left it on its side and swapped the position of the S7 with the one next to it.  It's been running about 10 minutes and the temperature is around 61.  This is all at 650mhz on a batch 10.  The other miner that is now in the "hot spot" is also on it's right side now and still running at 62.  Thanks for the tips VirosaGITS and Legacy2005.

I just got my batch 10 today and it's far from ideal to say the least.  Running it at the default 700mhz in a 72 degree F ambient temperature room at 100% fan my temps are up to about 77C.  I dropped it down to 650mhz and now it hashes at 4.4th and a mere 74C.  On the plus side it's got really low hardware errors.  Cry

I got more even temps by laying the miner on the side... xD And that sound a bit running hot. Is it bathing in its own heat output? Mine B8 and B9 are a bit cooler, to say the least.

Thanks I'll try putting it on it's side.  Does it matter if it sits on its left side or right side?  I'd rather not have the larger heat sinks facing down.  I worry about gravity eventually pulling the heat sinks off.

It sits right next to another S7 batch 9 that runs 55 57 60.

I'm also curious where these are shipping from to calculate shipping costs.
629  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Solar array starting to look good. on: February 20, 2016, 03:18:15 PM
Awesome project Phil!  Best of luck to you on it.  I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing more about it.

Looks awesome...but even building it from scratch with no labor/overhead costs you'd be hard pressed to ROI on this anytime soon. Even if you paid 60k for this setup that would be able to power 20kw worth of miners for free it would take over 4 years to ROI. Guess its worth it if your paying 15 or 20 cent power in jersey, since this will essentially let you mine for the long term and compete with the big players paying near zero cent power.

You have to think of the solar setup more like power supplies in mining.  Even if he stops mining the solar setup will still generate money for him and still have many other uses.

Nice setup!  Off topic, but why does the A6 in the middle bottom row look different?

Got the fan kit today Phil.  Thanks a million!

I'm guessing just about everybody's batch 10 is shipped.  I ordered mine Jan 31st got shipping notice today.  Definitely have buyers remorse with the high difficulty jumps.

Thanks for the additional info Phil.  Fantastic service and always so helpful.  I can't thank you enough!

Hmmm seems like more than I thought it would be.  So without the fan control these things would run at full blast and are probably quite loud.  I'd need the voltage step down and a pair of male pwm connectors to connect the two fans.  Does the step down get warm?  I notice a couple of heat sinks on it.  I would probably want to wrap that up with something.

I will pack it up toss in a speed controller

You can run four on the dual 2000/4000 two as push two as pull.

the fan controller can do four of these

Interesting I wasn't even thinking of a push pull setup with these fan pushing so much cfm.  I was thinking if a pair of the Scythe fans are enough then a pair of these would be plenty cool enough.

I would send them with a speed control

When they run at 3900 rpm or less they are pretty quiet

That would be awesome.  Thanks!

These fans are definitely good and cheaper.  I only come to know about them recently when I was looking at mainly CFM and was replacing 1 of the S7 fan.  I asked on the S7 forum but no one responded and I figure , it's cheap enough so I order some.  They're good but it will throw the RPM off a bit when you view the S7 manual fan setting but does not impact performance.  The only difference and why I went with the Ultra Kaze is that they're 3 pin vs these being 4 pin.  So you will need adapters which shouldn't be an issue but I'm just lazy.

I'm lazy too and I like to try to keep things clean.  Definitely not as clean as MarkAz keeps his gear but I like to use the built in 3 pin connectors for the fan on the 4k board.  I'm going to let it run for a bit with the scythe fans and if they still stay too hot I may take a pair of those fans off you Phil.  I was worried with 224 cfm that it would be loud, but looking at your sound meter pics they should be ok I think.

Seem to be having some oceania / asia connectivity problems for a short while.
Pool hash rate went down about 2PH to about 21PH (half an hour ago) then jumped up to 25PH so I guess most people didn't notice it.
I did - coz it affected my home connection - and also the JP node
(but usually no one mines to JP so no one probably noticed that Tongue)
Also seems to be some linode connectivity problems (that's not rare Tongue) and that affects my monitoring but not the main pool.

Linode had a SSH mess up recently that left a lot of their connections open to hijack.

640  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN AntMiner APW3-12-1600 PSU Series on: February 13, 2016, 04:12:59 AM
The first 2 I got from Bitmain have 12 PCIe connectors. Also no provision for DC on/off unless there is a header inside. Now they all come with 10 PCIe and a DC on/off pigtail  plug w/jumper on it.

Thanks for the clarification.
