621  Economy / Services / Re: A simple bitcoin Q/A. Learn new and interesting stuff about bitcoin. on: March 09, 2018, 09:40:53 PM
Question #9:
A bitcoin transaction with 6 confirmations is usually considered to be secure. Why is it so?

Answer

With one confirmation you are vulnerable to the 51% attack. There could also be a miner with a lot of hashing power who could get a couple blocks in a row, so three confirmations removes most of them.

With six confirmations it is essentially mathematically impossible for an attacker with less than 51% of all mining capacity to get six blocks in a row. and still surpass the longest block chain. With 51% or a lot more than 51% the attacker can get six confirmations by creating a parallel blockchain in which only transactions approved by the attacker get included in blocks.

Therefore 6 confirmations are needed to prevent the attack from attacker.

Although this question could have been answered better, this the best that has been posted thus far. Enjoy the merit.

With that said, I think the question is a bit dated now. Not many exchanges require 6 confirmations these days, and theoretically, it’s almost impossible with the amount of hashing power spread across miners for the possibility of a 51% attack to be conducted successfully. One hasn’t happened yet, and it’s theoretically improbable. But that doesn’t mean that you should ever, I repeat ever, treat an unconfirmed transaction the way you would one with a couple confirmations.

bump for a major problem that needs fixed

I think you are just wasting your time, the staff will never implement changes to stop scammers, even though they know you are correct, even though they know it's the right thing to do, their pride will get in the way.

A lot of people have said the same thing about spammers and shit posters. It took years, but the merit system was introduced as a self-governing way to combat the problem.

If enough people make noise and show concern here about scammers and their blatant/obvious attempts to scam people by utilizing certain tools/features that they have access to, then it's just a matter of time before the staff see this and explore the options and variables that are being brought up.

While this forum is not a democracy, the staff actually do listen. But I do understand your frustration; it may hold more value if theymos actually addressed some of these concerns, whether it's in favor of the suggestion or not.
623  Other / Meta / Re: TMAN's Level up challenge.-- UPDATED... on: March 09, 2018, 09:21:12 PM
Is this thread active like before, does TMAN continously monitors those new members in the forum to give sMerits? I would love to know. Thank you because I applied before and become inactive because of shoolworks. THANK YOU

You're not going to receive any merit if you don't have any basic investigative/researching skills. Look at the post right before yours. It was posted 3 days ago. It was merited by TMAN. Which means, yes, TMAN is still actively monitoring posts, at least here. Maybe you should focus on school for the time being; there seems to be some more educating that needs to happen Tongue

What part of [FULL] is it hard for you to understand? Just wondering why you think you'll be accepted. Unless you're referring to this:

Note: If the campaign is full, but you are a very trusted member of the community, feel free to apply.

Then my question becomes "What part of very trusted member of the community is confusing to you?"
625  Other / Meta / Re: Does merit really helping the forum. on: March 09, 2018, 09:11:48 PM
You know, both are correct at same time.

1) Merit system has good impact for the forum. It has reduced the spam here considerably and even new members are making more detailed constructive posts. A lot of members came up with useful threads like stats and images for new forum rules.

2) Merit system has failed as well. Since the spammers are seeing all doors of getting away with spam posts and ranking up here on forum, they are using such terms for the merit system. They think that the decision will be reversed if they do so frequently.

It's too early to make this statement. What you've been seeing is the effect of having default sMerits in the accounts when the system was introduced. Once the decay of merit sets in and all the default merit is expired, it will become as difficult to rank up as the system intended. The spam posts will surely slow down even further than what we've seen. And before anyone says "It has been plenty of time since the system was introduced and it hasn't changed yet", there are still daily topics being started about merit, so there is still a large number of users who still don't know what the merit system is or that are not familiar with it.

Give it time, and you'll see that the system does what it is intended to do. It's just a matter of time before users realize that they cannot just farm alt accounts anymore for the sole purpose of joining bounty camps, and before the mass exodus of users who will start abandoning their accounts.
626  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Common Q&A about Bitcoin: Non-Technical Edition (Earn Merits) on: March 09, 2018, 09:04:46 PM
Sorry about this. Thank you for letting me know where to improve. This really helped me. Thanks for your honest feedback. What I don't like is the "merit whore". I respect your opinion with regards to that. I'm still a newbie in here, ready to accept all your hurtful words for my improvement. Anyways goodluck and sorry for wasting your time! Have a great day ahead of you! Peace!

9 out of your last 10 posts are in topics that have to do with merit. The other 1 has to do with making money with Bitcoin. It's obvious that you're here on the forums to make money. That's fine and all, but try to become a healthy part of conversation, as well. You're much better than other shitposters I've encountered; at least you're trying and putting in time to write and answer posts properly. Just try to shift some of your focus from solely using these forums to earn money, and more towards the utility and future of bitcoin and cryptocurrency, and you'll be fine.
627  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: March 09, 2018, 09:14:38 AM
I've always been curious as to why people mix their bitcoin. I know privacy is the number one reason, but when do you personally mix your coins?

For me, it's specifically when I need to transfer a decent sum of Bitcoin to another party and don't have enough in my hot wallets to cover the transaction. Whenever I have to dip into my cold storage, I send what I need to transfer to a mixer before sending it to my recipient. Can I assume that this is the major reason why you guys tumble your coins? Or am I wrong, and should use mixers more often than I think I need to? I'd like to hear your reasoning, if you're comfortable with sharing.
628  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Common Q&A about Bitcoin: Non-Technical Edition (Earn Merits) on: March 09, 2018, 09:06:12 AM
I'm gonna take my shot on this.

Q: Is Bitcoin a scam? What about a Ponzi scheme?
A: Bitcoin is not a scam. Ponzi scheme is a form of scam that uses deception to let people think that the company is very successful even though it doesn't really exist and it uses late investors' money to pay early investors.

Q: Isn't it too late to get into Bitcoin?
A: It's never too late to invest in bitcoin. The technology has still so much to offer aside from financial freedom due to its store of value.

Q: Is Bitcoin legal? I heard it's illegal in some countries. Why?
A: Legalization depends on the government. The only reason why some countries banned bitcoin because some people use bitcoin to do illegal activities like money laundering, buying illegal drugs and financing terrorists.
Q. Don't people use Bitcoin for the black market or for illegal stuff?
A: Some people use if for illegal stuff that's why some countries banned bitcoin because of this main reason. Even if transactions can be seen publicly but you will never know who owns the bitcoin address or who's the person behind buying those stuffs.

Q: Why is Bitcoin so expensive? I can't afford a bitcoin.
A: In every labor there's always an equivalent payment or price. Acquiring bitcoin is not for free. You need to purchase expensive and powerful machines for you to mine and compete with other miners. The value of bitcoin is also determined by the society's acceptance and adoption of the technology. The more people who use or invest in bitcoin the higher its value.
Q: If Bitcoin isn't bad, why do famous financial gurus like Warren Buffet warn us to stay away from it?
A: Change is the only constant in this world. Some people doesn't want change when it comes to things that they can't comprehend. We have different views when it comes to bitcoin, we should just leave them alone and enjoy the ride. Sooner or later those skeptics will hop in when they see our success.

Q: How do I cash out Bitcoin?
A: Every country have local bitcoin exchanges. Some banks supports bitcoin as well.

Q: Is Bitcoin safe?
A: Yes, no one can hack your bitcoin unless they know your private key. The best place to store your bitcoin is by using hardware wallets like Ledger Nano, Trezor or Keepkey. Make sure your private key is hidden in a safe place and should have a back up. Sharing your private key is like giving your money.
Q: Who controls Bitcoin?
A: Bitcoin is highly decentralized. The miners, hodlers, exchanges, and developers are the people controlling it. Hodlers have the biggest impact when it comes to bitcoin's price and development.

Q: Will Bitcoin make me rich? (asked by Walrus1 here)
A: Yes, there are lots of people who doesn't even understand the technology that invest to bitcoin few years back and became millionaires or billionaires. It's never too late though.

Those are tough questions. Hope I got some answers right. I did my best to answer as brief and concise as I could.

I also have a question in mind.

What do you think is Satoshi Nakamoto's first invention? Is it the blockchain or bitcoin?
I'm not sure what's the answer but I think he invented blockchain first then bitcoin.

Did you read the purpose of why I asked these questions, and my expectations of how the answers should be positioned in order for the layman to understand them? You know, people that have never heard of, or have very little experience with, Bitcoin... Your answers are very definitive in nature and hint at requiring prior knowledge of Bitcoin. You sound very matter-of-fact, although it seems that you're misinformed yourself. I know you tried to answer the questions to the best of your abilities, but put yourself in the shoes of someone who doesn't know much, if anything, about Bitcoin. Then read the answers again, and tell me if you think you're making anything more clear for them or if your answers just add a bit to their confusion.

Additionally, the question that you want to contribute means that people would have to know who Satoshi Nakamoto is, and that they would have to have technical knowledge about the Blockchain and Bitcoin. Yet in the title of this very thread, it clearly states "Non-Technical Edition".

While I appreciate that you took the time to write out your answers, I have concluded that you are, indeed, a merit whore. Nice try, but your answers don't merit any, well... merit.
629  Other / Meta / Re: Does merit really helping the forum. on: March 09, 2018, 08:49:45 AM
In my opinion it seems the forum goes exactly the same how it was before the merit system implemented, everyone is having the same way of conversation, maybe the management is trying to improve more the posting ability of each member, the purpose is quite good but the system is quite tight for everyone especially to those member who are in the lower rank that strives hard to rank up. The merit requirement is too difficult to meet to everyone, that is just my opinion, i always respect everyone’s view of the system😊

This is false. I've noticed the difference, and it's been pretty drastic. I watched about a dozen boards by adding them to my watchlist by default. I've been doing this for a few months now. Prior to the introduction of the Merit system, I would see roughly 15-20 pages of topics on my Watchlist. It was tedious, but I would click on every single one of the topics, review the first sentence or two of the post, and do one of two things: 1. I would click the "unwatch" link and close the tab, never to see that post in my watchlist again or 2. I would engage in topics that I found interesting.

This was extremely tedious to do on a daily basis.

Now? I've actually added a couple more boards to my watchlist, and on average, I only see 6-7 pages of posts appearing in my watchlist daily. So for your "opinion" of the forum being "exactly" the same way as it was before just means that you're not spending enough time on the forums to notice a difference, or you're posting in shitty megathreads that attract the shitposting spammers.

EDIT: Yup, just looked. Every post that you've made within the first page of your post history is on a shitpost topic with shitpost answers that all have at least a dozen pages (except for the post you made in this thread and a speculation post about if Bitcoin will reach $15,000 before the end of this year Roll Eyes). The reason that you think it's exactly the same as it was before the Merit system was introduced is because you are a shitposter that only posts in shit threads to spam your signature. You say that the merit requirement is too difficult to meet? With posts like yours, no shit.

*le sigh* the irony of your post is unreal.

We have additional sponsors!

Please help me welcome our newest supporters and sponsors of this challenge:

JackpotRacer: Backup Merit Sponsor
JackpotRacer has committed to providing merits for winners if current merit sources ever run out. (reference)

pugman: Cash Sponsor
pugman has sponsored and sent a transaction for 0.004BTC to be utilized for any way that is best for this challenge's participants, whether it is for future winners or bonuses. (reference: 12)

Kemarit: Backup Merit Sponsor

A HUGE thank you to the sponsors of this campaign! I initially thought that it would just be me and @bill gator hosting and carrying this challenge, but the positive response and support has been amazing. Thank you, BitcoinTalk community. You guys are pretty amazing!
632  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Joe's Signatureless Challenge: Win $25 ($10 for 2nd) + 8 Merits every week! on: March 09, 2018, 07:10:30 AM
I'm a huge fan of SegWit adoption, and if the challenge gains more attraction, I will definitely include a clause that requires all participants to use a SegWit address.

Unfortunately, there is no way to tell whether or not a P2SH “3” address is Segwit-nested.  Perhaps you may push specifically for what I call Bravo Charlie addresses”.  Although that could be a bit inconvenient for some of us who are using nested addresses for the transition period, I think it is important to raise user awareness about the Bitcoin address format of the future.  Many people do not yet understand Bech32; see also the advertisement at the top of my recent post on the topic.  (Far from my first post on the topic.)

Unfortunately, I think the technical specs of bech32 addresses are way beyond what we'll receive as the average participant to this challenge. As much as I want to promote SegWit adoption, I don't want to deter users from partaking in this challenge due to their neglect for wanting to learn more about proper SegWit implementation. Perhaps in the future when Bravo Charlie One addresses become more of a widespread and known format, we can add more relevant instructions on how to follow the format, but until then, I'm trusting that applicants will take the time to properly create and use SW-enabled wallets for this challenge.

I am adding an escrow address that will hold the funds for this challenge: 37ZhBrGgw6BSghMQnPi4ixdmRBLxBTAXCf (blockchain)

You can view the balance at any given time. If you'd like to make a donation to this challenge, you can do so at that address. It will only ever be used to reward winners of this challenge, and every transaction initiated from that address will be recorded in this thread.

Would you like me to send my sponsorship money to the escrow address? It seems it is well funded already, but I'm wondering if I should save on transaction fees and send it directly or fund the escrow address; your call Joe.

It's entirely up to you. Transaction fees are the lowest they've been in months, so that shouldn't be an issue, but it's completely up to you how you want to handle payments for second place. I have no trust issues with you, and I'm sure that nobody else does, either, so I personally don't see any problems with you sending the prize directly to the second place winner.

very good idea

please let me know if I can donate some merits to a winner

Thank you, JPR! I'll add you to the Backup Merit Sponsor list and send you a message if there is ever a need for sMerits to be distributed. Perhaps you can view some of the participants' latest posts and randomly award them a merit here and there as you see posts that you deem meritorious? This could potentially become another reason for forum members to join this campaign; to randomly receive merits from supporters of this challenge. It's up to you, but thank you so much for becoming a merit sponsor!

@BTCforJoe, I suggest adding an explicit written rule disqualifying people who make a patent demonstration of having failed to read the rules.  The length of disqualification should be proportional to how outrageously the rules were ignored.  In any case where it’s obvious that a bounty-grubber is blindly groping for a place to drop a username and Bitcoin address, disqualification may as well be permanent.

The delightful irony is that those who fail to read the rules will miss this rule, too.

The entire point of the campaign is to promote quality posting, not providing spammers with additional funds (and merits) for low quality posts and the ability to read is pretty much a necessity. I second the idea for a disqualification for the future.

I agree with you two. That will make merits and funds to be given only to people wanting to improve.

See my previous post for my feedback on the matter regarding applicants who clearly have not read the rules.

Regarding bounty-grubbers, I don't want to become a sig-nazi; I can actually foresee some participants switching between this challenge and paid signature campaigns, which is fine. I'm just glad that they'll be mindful for at least the duration that they're a part of this challenge, and I'm hoping that their persistence in creating quality posts will carry over to their posts if they so choose to join a paid sig camp. However, I think that if they drop this challenge throughout a round that they are registered, by way of applying a paid signature midway through the round, then they should be permanently disqualified from joining, as that shows a blatant disregard/disrespect towards the efforts that so many are putting forth to support this challenge. Fair?

Joe, I'm not promising when and how much I'll send but I'll surely do so at least once. Am sort of busy right now and in a month's time, after I get free and if this campaign is still running, I'd further provide help. I might send you some funds over tomorrow if possible, I still haven't decided how much.

this account 'PUGMAN'  is a hacked account that has been bought from TOR. im the original Pugman since 2014

Please follow the advice and instructions as @bill gator has recommended.

However, I will say that your accusations are concerning a bit, as @pugman has made a monetary donation towards the funds for this challenge. If your allegations are true, then it's creating a personal moral dilemma for me, as I do not condone the hacking/buying of BCT accounts; I would be obliged to refund pugman's contribution.

That's all I have to say about this matter at this time, but if you would like to provide proof of your allegations, please PM me with the details. Until this is done, I will carry on with business as usual, as blind allegations without documentation carry no substance. Please PM me if you'd like to discuss this matter in further detail.
633  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Joe's Signatureless Challenge: Win $25 ($10 for 2nd) + 8 Merits every week! on: March 09, 2018, 06:40:36 AM
I wish I could participate but it's around a month I've been participating in a signature campaign which gives tokens after the end of ICO. So I'll have to wear my signature.

This is great idea and I think we need such more voluntary posts and contest to have a great forum.

Thanks for your enthusiasm! Be sure to bookmark this thread (or add it to your watchlist) and join us for a chance to win when your signature campaign ends.

This is a good thing because it encourages not only spammers but all those who really want to post quality posts.

As others have mentioned, you two are not eligible to participate in this challenge, as you are currently wearing paid signatures. I may take @nullius's suggestion to disqualify applicants who clearly haven't read the rules (which defeats the very purpose of why this challenge was created in the first place). Because these applicants clearly haven't understood (or accepted) the challenge in all of its glory and willfully neglected the rules, the disqualification period should be somewhat long. I'm thinking until 3 full rounds have passed. Thoughts, everyone?
634  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: FaucetHUB.io || +Microwallet (9 coins) ||+Dice & +Jackpot||+Games||+Exchange on: March 06, 2018, 09:22:37 AM
KaToT.

You're making a lot of noise, but you're not saying anything. I'm not taking sides here, and I'm only going to tell you this out of pure observation from the last several pages of this thread: Documentation beats conversation 100% of the time.

You have provided no documentation of any of your allegations. Whether it happened or not, you're making enemies here because your wildly accusing someone that they trust. You change up your reason for why we shouldn't trust FaucetHub, and when you're called out about it, you attack the person that's asking you for more details about your "case". That's not a very healthy way to achieve your goal of "warning" users about the site.

The reason so many people are sticking up for @mexicantarget is because he has proven himself to be trustworthy. Not just once. Not just twice. But repeatedly for years and years on end. So for someone to accuse him of blatantly and "illegally" stealing money from you is naturally going to cause others to get defensive in his place.

My suggestion to you is this: If you simply apologize for your words and actions, and commit to stopping the baseless attacks against mex and his users here, and apologize for trying to gain the system and defraud the site, and kindly ask mex to refund your deposit of $0.53, I'm sure that he will. If not, I'll gladly send you $0.53 worth of Bitcoin, as long as you agree to pay the fee for the transaction.

Otherwise, please stop blowing your horn. It's counterproductive and highly ineffective, and all you're doing is giving me a valid reason to report your actions and posts to a moderator, as it is clearly becoming abusive and trolling. You've tried to make your point. You've failed at making your point. You're continuing to press the issue without providing any kind of proof or verification that people are asking you for. You are derailing the thread. You are attacking other users. All of these actions are grounds for being banned from the forums.

Please stop, or simply take this matter to private messages.

I was interested in earning a merit to rank up. At least I could join some signature campaigns that we junior members and newbie are not allowed to. I never thought it was this hard to just earn even a single merit. I suddenly felt hopeless and maybe I will be left alone as it seemed too difficult to be accomplished. Ten merits going up is so high to reach. I got only two. Hopeless about such but am still giving it a try. Maybe this is just a piece of junk post but its up to anybody now. Maybe I don't always deserve it. Just want to know if I lacked something that should be said. Maybe you can help me out create a better reply. Thanks! May you always have a better day after reading it. Don't worry I can accept any bad comment for this. Thank you and more blessings to you in return.

Just because your post is long doesn't mean it's good.

Hi BTCforJoe,

I'd like to be Backup Merit sponsor since i have lots of unused sMerit(s) and usually i only give merit for posts about technical knowledge. Just PM me and i'll send merits to the winner.
Also, i think it would be better if you use the Signature to encourage SegWit adoption as well.

Another member that is committing to become a backup merit sponsor? I'll take it! Thanks so much for doing this. I'm a huge fan of SegWit adoption, and if the challenge gains more attraction, I will definitely include a clause that requires all participants to use a SegWit address. For now, I think I can lead with a few weeks of fair warning to let participants research and create SegWit wallets and addresses. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll also see about including a line about SegWit in the signatures for future iterations of the design.

Welcome to the challenge! Are you sure about using your winnings as a donation in the event that you place? If so, then I will rollover your winnings towards the same rank for the following round if you place in any winning positions! Thank you so much for doing this, and good luck!

Let's make things more interesting  Roll Eyes

I'm ready to sponsor a special award for guys that beat nullius for the first ..what the hell.... first, second, and third place.  Grin Grin Grin
So in case nullius finishes on 4th, I'll award 5$ (in BTC) to each competitor that makes the podium.

If nobody makes it this time it will go to the next round for the normal prizes

stompix has sent $15 worth of BTC in order to supplement the winner(s) who beat @nullius with $5 each (for up to third place). The transaction can be seen here: https://blockchain.info/tx/3fc23db6d1e3f4665ce38b4c15a1a596a89d353522427a3e3e8cf80fd6147347

Because he has indicated that he trusts that I will use the funds appropriately, I have decided that to make it fair for ALL participants, including nullius, if nullius wins this week, he will receive an additional $5, and the remaining $10 will be rolled over into the next round (Round 2).

Thanks for sponsoring this and making it more interesting, stompix!

Update

I am adding an escrow address that will hold the funds for this challenge: 37ZhBrGgw6BSghMQnPi4ixdmRBLxBTAXCf (blockchain)

You can view the balance at any given time. If you'd like to make a donation to this challenge, you can do so at that address. It will only ever be used to reward winners of this challenge, and every transaction initiated from that address will be recorded in this thread.

You will not be accepted while wearing a paid signature. Re-read the original post to learn more about this challenge.

For week two or the second round of the challenge I would be happy to sponsor another slot for $5 in BTC and +1 Merit if there are more than 25-Participants. It looks like this thread is getting a lot of attention, participants, reads and sponsors. I can see this picking up in a really nice way, wouldn't mind sponsoring an extra slot every time I can afford to do so and feel there are enough participants to wrestle for it fairly.

So to be clear, I will do my best to continually donate more seats as I can afford, if this becomes too complicated I will make a little table to keep track of how many seats I'll be sponsoring on any given week. I'll give notice before the round/week begins if I cannot sponsor or am going to change the sponsors I am willing to do, whether it be more or less.

Awesome! I'll be sure to update the post to reflect the changes and the stipulations! What a great way to encourage more participants. To recap, this prize will only be available for the weeks that have at least 25 participants. This will be considered the 3rd place prize on the weeks that qualify. Otherwise, the 2 Merit prize will take its place.

Thanks so much for doing this, bill gator! It's good to see that I'm not the only one that's so passionate about wanting to reduce the spam around here Cheesy
