I've noticed that when Windows blocks CastXMR from accessing a GPU because of aggressive overclocking, the software doesn't handle it very gracefully. The affected GPU stops reporting its hashrate every five seconds, and after a few minutes the software hangs entirely and multiple ^C are needed to terminate the run, assuming that the system doesn't freeze entirely and need a warm reset.
A useful feature would be for CastXMR to recognize that if it is accessing a list of GPUs, each of them should report results periodically, and if one of them goes missing for, say, twice the running average time between results, then it should be considered dead, and a clean restart of CastXMR should be initiated.
Or better yet, if CastXMR could perform a disable/enable of the problem card and then reinitialize it individually, so that none of the other cards had to be bothered.
With a Mining Expert 19-slot motherboard running a pile of aggressively overclocked Vegas, you're more likely to wedge one of the cards than usual, and being able to recover gracefully from that situation would substantially improve the average hashrate.
It's not really a problem with CAST-XMR now is it. That is you choosing to overdrive the card and then demand that that the tool fix it for you. Maybe you should spend more time accepting a stable hash rate per card and live with it. Its really a driver issue anyway and you are taking risks when overclocking that you will put the system into an unrecoverable state. I personally don't need a feature in CAST that disables the cards and I don't think that would be helpful for people who have configured their systems correctly. I reboot once a week for windows updates, other than that I don't really look at the rigs. If you need these bandaid scripts to monitor your hash rate cause it drops or your cards hang you have other problems that are not associated with the miner. I would rather the dev spend time improving the miner efficiency rather than adding some lame monitoring function that is completely unnecessary. Oh and by the way I use Wattman. YIKES! Really? Unbelieveble! I'm using cast_xmr_vega with 6x VEGA56. Everyday and very often I need to restart miner or PC. VEGA's are not modded. Everything I do before running the miner is run devcon.exe for cli enable/disable GPU's and then Overdriven tool with overclock settings. Very often is output paused... until S is pressed and after is all messages displayed with OUTDATED result. I never had a ban from poolserver but last 2 days 3 times! Sometimes freezing after Difficulty changed message.  When I press Q displayed 'quitting..' and nothing happend. Right click top of command window > properties > options tab > uncheck quick edit mode |

I love SSDs and installed probably 40 of them last year for customers in my IT business. And, my first two rigs have them. But, the two new ones I'm working on I'm throwing in some used laptop hard drives simply because I have those on hand and don't have any SSDs in stock. So other than a little bit of boot speed and shaving off a few watts of power consumption, is there any reason why SSDs are so popular in mining rigs?
Virtual Memory (pagefile) is used a lot by the GPU's so its nice to have an SSD which provides considerable access speeds over traditional drives. Also they are less bulky and last longer. A lot of people use thumb drives as well, but I don't think they are meant for the heavy read/writes from pagefile use. This of course applies only to windows. |

whats the power draw @37 eth and @450 equihash?
Hi kanelor, for 470 sol/s Equihash algo, it draws about 170W. For ETH at 39 Mh/s I will come back to my farm next week and test with single P104-100 to check power. That isn't very good sols per watt. Regular 1070's can do 450-500 sols at 130w. Need to find a good memory comput algo other than ETH to test with. |

I suspect HBM2 production still isn't ramping up enough to support as much Vega production as AMD would prefer.
I have ZERO doubt that the AMD current shortage/price jumps are mining-related - and same on the Nvidia 1070 (which is seeing AMD cards pushing into it's price area some) and 1070 ti.
Oddly enough there doesn't seem to be any shortage on 1060 cards - though pricing seems to have going up some.
Still, I think even aside from this AMD missed the boat big time. and, the HBM2 issue doesn't explain the Nvidia shortages on their higher end cards. THis is a lot like the market shortage back in Q2. First, all the AMD 4xx & 5xx disappeared then Nvidia was next to go short. I think there are still a lot of people that think AMD first when it comes to mining, given they were clearly the better choice before so many Equihash coins become very profitable to mine with GTX. The really ODD part is that it's NVIDIA cards that are in really short supply now, AMD cards have had the pricing jump the last week but they're still AVAILABLE, Nvidia cards 1070 and up are not only price rise some but availability VERY short. It's not just Newegg - EVGA themselves had very few "available" cards in the 1070 and up range when I checked this afternoon, NONE of the 1070 ti models except the Hybrid, 2 or 3 each on the 1070 1080 and 1080 ti. History shows that when stock runs low and prices rise that a new product is being produced. I'd expect to see some form of Volta showing up mid Feb and we probably wont be able to get them until mid to late March. |

This is a problem for nvidia.
You need an update to install any recent driver packages; which will not be pushed to you or install-able until activated.... It will fail to install the windowsupdate nvidia driver until the update is performed; which is reliant on activation.
It was a recent hurdle I learned about when doing machine upgrades. Couldn't install any nvidia driver until it has the OS updated to the creators update I believe. Yeah, that is a tricky one. Fortunately, you can get the 1709 build ISO from http://windowsiso.net/windows-10-iso/windows-10-creators-update-1709-download-build-16299-15/ then just make a bootable USB or DVD and install as per usual. Then I manually d/l'ed and installed the NVIDIA driver package (sans GeForce Experience) and aside from some incredibly annoying things as a result of Win10 not being activated, it is mining away. Simplest solution:
Install and activate 7; do not use AutoKMS to activate.... Now update 7. Install 10 as upgrade form CD or USB after SP1 has installed, and one more round of updates install after the SP1 portion; don't install 10 before this point. 10 will be pre-activated when finished. Just process updates and you are off ot the races legitimately with no out of pocket expense. Hmmm, don't you still have to pay for Win7 in this scenario? My recent issue with win10 was with a recent download; well, the ISO available not long ago..... Ill see if a newer ISO is available on their website. Most of my internet links are via cellular; saving on update bandwidth will be a godsend. You can easily use an OEM license as is found discarded on old laptops/desktops and whatnot..... Or if you have access to an OEM activation tool for manufacturers/distributors.... But AutoKMS; the kind that gets broken by a future windows update; will not work with the 10 free upgrade; as its a way they kept people from getting illegitimate copies of 10. All of my Win10s are still working without any activation - no impact in mining - in fact most of them are upgraded to latest edition - the one with the lake wall paper during bootup which is the version that supports more than 8 GPUs. Is there a time limit when the "please buy license or else" popup comes out? You mean the watermark? Seems to be random. Also I read they are actually cutting off the free upgrade service soon. Lets hope it doesnt effect the current free mining though.  |

So far the six-slot Onda with integrated CPU works well. Just the annoying Windows stickiness (allegedly linked to the 1709 creators' update - other rigs now seem to exhibit some sort of UI stickiness as well since I updated them). That's good news; I've got two of the same board (with the Celeron CPU) on their way from China now. Question for you and the group in general: do you bother with activating Windows 10, buy sketch keys from Kinguin, et al., or pony up for an OEM license from Newegg or the like? I wouldn't bother but it looks like you need to activate Windows if for no other other reason to stop Update from rebooting your machine every night, as it seems prone to do... Hi all .. i have this problem can somebody help me understanding this ? i have 4 Sapphire Vega 64 no liquid ... and using 0.8.1 castminer .. one of them it goes slowly than others ... look on image .. tnx a lot  Can somebody explain me pls ? Are you using the GPU in question to display to a monitor, or teamviewer? This can effect hashes greatly as it has to use GPU power to render everything. Use onboard graphics or get a crappy GPU for display purposes only. By the way if you bothered to sift through these pages of posts you would have found your answer quiet a few times. Don't be a lazy piece of shit, we got enough of those around here. |

Vegas behave much better under the current driver vs the August driver.
DDUing the drivers to switch coins is a pain in the ass.
lol there are much better, easier and faster ways to mine with other drivers, and no there are no plans to "fix" this miner as its not his fault the newest drivers don't enable compute mode for Vegas. |

Who is buying these things at 800 dollars? At that rate why not go with a 1080 Ti? The Vegas are only amazing at Cryptonight from what I can tell. Almost a cryptonight ASIC as a mining card...
No, it is not just cryptonight... ETH is a good too 44,5Mh/s 44.5reported, real eth hashrate for 56(to64) vega is 43. For almost the same amount of money you could get 90 MH/s from three RXs. Which requires 3 pcie slots, risers, power connections. Some people just don't understand the importance of rig density. |

You are better off mining an Nvidia optimized algorithm coins and trading for ETN than mining ETN with Nvidia as its best mined with AMD.

I'm at 5kw across two 16A breakers. I've had to ban the wife from using hair dryer / vacuum cleaner on certain outlets. LOL might be time to build a shed or find a small place to house your rigs and wire it up all proper. |

My guess is that these risers are wider than normal because of the added 6pin/molex power connections on the side . Just get some regulard v006c risers, or risers with the power connection that suits you. |

I have confirmed that in the latest release - version 8 - there is an issue with running more than 3 RX 580s. Ran the exact same command in version 7 and version 8: cast_xmr-vega -S <pool name> -u <addr> -G 0,1,2,3,4 Version 7 - Works perfectly fine, albeit performance is a little lower than expected. Version 8 - Does not detect the fourth GPU. It detects the 5th one, which is weird. I've also tried with the --fastjobswitch, --forcecompute and --nonicehash parameters and that did not change the outcome. Is anyone else having this issue? If so, is it a fix on your end or should I try to file a bug request with the dev? Not knowing one thing about your setup or any other details, or anything you have tried, I would say that this is entirely your problem alone. The reason it's not detecting the GPU's would be most likely attributed to your setup and nothing to do with CAST-XMR Well I'm not the only one with the issue and it worked fine in a previous version... Maybe try to check one of your raisers? Risers are fine. If it was a riser, it wouldn't work in the previous version. are you using the same batch file from the working version? |

While I love amazon I just can't stomach the tax fees on big ticket items. Sometimes I can find no tax merchants on amazon but its rare. So I have to stick with Newegg and BHPhoto for no tax and free ship. |

The negatives seem to out weight the positives on this one. I like the OC'd memory but would liked to have seen 6GB at least. I also can't justify buying a gigabyte GPU with a 3 month warranty unless it pays for itself in less than 3months. |
