reposting here ...

Quote
... there was a network scale attack I pointed out to Gavin and the other devs after observing namecoin network getting "hung" for months by miners joining and leaving en-masse due to mining incentives and price fluctuations ...

if a well-resourced 'dishonest miner' attacker could build up a significant of quantity of mining power and ramp up hash-rate by bringing on-line an ever-increasing amount of compute, selling all btc the whole way and simultaneously drive price lower over the same period, squeezing out 'honest' miners ... then in a final act take all their mining power off-line during a final dump of price then it would leave the network hanging at very low block solving rate (long confirms) waiting forever for the next retargetting and a low price and take a toll on confidence ... the fix was to allow for a 'special' retargetting on the downside if it hasn't happened after a time-out, not just the set 2016 blocks.

Dogecoin applied this fix months ago Smiley
What's so special about 2016 blocks anyway, why was this number chosen by Satoshi?

I have completed the Nxt section for the book I am writing:

You might want to sell your book on NXT Marketplace when it's completed.
685  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DOGE] Dogecoin - very currency many coin - v1.8 Required Update on: September 19, 2014, 11:41:19 AM
Looking on the 150% gains in 30 days I was amazed that some other alts went up the same time.
Yet bitcoin is going down right now , so prepare for a down-slide on all fronts if things go bad in bitcoin land.

But , I won't sell even one dogetoshi.

Me and my big mouth

Well, the few most popular and important alts (Doge is one of them) don't seem to go down with Bitcoin. That is, they do, but only in fiat terms, tracking Bitcoin decline. It means they are slowly detaching from Bitcoin, people who invest in them don't immediately run to Bitcoin as a safe haven, which used to be the case a few months ago. I think this detachment will be revealing itself more and more over the coming weeks and months. And because market caps of these alts are small compared to Bitcoin, it will not take a lot of capital to keep them from going down, as priced in satoshi.

It is usually like that for what everyone say; Schiff is right on most subjects but he has been wrong on Bitcoin (https://www.youtube.com/user/SchiffReport)

We don't know yet if he has been wrong on Bitcoin. From what I've watched a few months ago he said Bitcoin can be copied. Well, he's not completely wrong. Bitcoin has been copied, at least the idea, and the idea has been improved upon in crypto 2.0 technologies, and this is still unfolding. Those who keep holding Bitcoins and stop looking for opportunities to invest them, will at best be able to maintain their status quo. Profits in Bitcoin are very limited, and mostly go to ASIC chip manufacturers at this point.
687  Economy / Speculation / Re: sideways for so long now.... on: September 19, 2014, 08:55:13 AM
Expect sideways to the end of September, it's still vacation time, economic activity tends to start to pick up end of Sept - beginning of Oct.

Hodl, boys! Another 2 weeks and it should get easier!
688  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price cannot fall infinitely on: September 19, 2014, 07:01:23 AM
Miners ? what about the other 12 million Bitcoin ? if only 5% of that 12 million hit these thin book orders of today's exchanges...Bitcoin will not hold $100 and not $400

you sold everything right? it's normal to react in this way, when you are not attached to your thing again

It's actually Investing 101 lesson that you should not have an emotional attachment to your investment Smiley

Before the agricultural revolution, it took humanity about one million years on average to develop enough infrastructure/capability to support an additional one million humans living at subsistence levels. After the agricultural revolution, that changed to talking only a few hundred years. Now, after the industrial revolution, that takes 90 minutes on average.

There are huge side effects:

Fiat leak due to mining is the culprit.

PoS is the answer.
691  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: September 18, 2014, 07:12:07 PM
The world is going digital, something that never existed before.

It would be a very fragile world. The attempts will continue of course, but the outcome is vague at best.

All bow to igorr, he's a prophet!
He was true in the end. I should have listened, but how could I have known he was true.

Well, he's only half 'true' Wink

He spotted the trend that mining is not sustainable long term, which is true. He spotted bots hyping the price on some exchanges, which is likely, but cannot be proven. He says to exit to fiat, which is supposedly a safe haven, which is total bull shit.

As you can see, there is a grain of truth in his words, but far from all of what he says.

Is there an API for the NXT asset exchange?

try asking here: www.nxtforum.org
696  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's about time to turn off PoW mining on: September 18, 2014, 09:51:30 AM
There's no checkpoints in Bitshares, users will be able to opt out checkpoints in Peercoin 0.5, and I don't know enough about NxT checkpointing to comment.

Interesting discussion you have here. I just want to inject some missing info which is too long to search.

Almost quoting Come-from-Beyond here. NXT in its bootstrapping phase (which is now) has rolling checkpoints 720 blocks deep (so called automatic re-organization of the blockchain). After the bootstrapping phase is over (could be by the end of 2014, at least that's the plan), Transparent Forging is supposed to be implemented which sets rolling checkpoints to 10 blocks deep. And CfB acknowledges that Transparent Forging is somewhat similar to what DPoS does, but at the same time it's different. In DPoS delegates are voted by users. In Transparent Forging mechanism of NXT the software will transparently define the next forgers of blocks with the algorithm, which enables transactions being sent directly to those forgers, which makes possible a very fast block generation (15 seconds - 1 minute).

The number of successful forgers in NXT since Genesis block varies over time, but on average is 250-300 as analysis of public keys in the blockchain reveals.

They will add Doge before Litecoin. But more likely neither of those.

What is the safest, lightweight NXT wallet out there?

This was released 2 days ago which is a mobile interface for their web wallet:
https://nxtforum.org/mynxt-info/mynxt-info-mobile-apps-%28android-iphone-maybe-windows-phone%29/
One more web wallet: https://nxtblocks.info/#wallet

As for what is the safest - you decide for yourself Smiley

I can't use either of those unfortunately.

A newly released wallet isn't safe enough for me unless it's from someone very respected. And I don't use web wallets for security reasons.

I understand. NXT is still very young, the apps are young too, as well as developers' track record. Web wallets actually work the same way as blockchain.info bitcoin wallet. Meaning, it doesn't store any private keys on the server, at least that's the idea I got about those, you may need to research or ask in that thread for details.

I guess your only option is to use the 'official' Wesleyh client then, the blockchain isn't large, only 0.5 Gb or so.
